Welcome This season at the Tobacco Factory Theatre bears witness to the fantastic health of Bristol’s theatre scene. Following our extraordinary production of Cinderella last Christmas (which is playing the St James’ Theatre in London this year) we are thrilled to be co-producing Hansel and Gretel with one of my favourite theatre companies, NIE. This show is already selling insanely well so do book soon. SATTF bring us the mouth-watering prospect of Richard III, one of my favourite Shakespeares and certainly my favourite history, and Two Gentlemen of Verona, possibly the brightest, funniest and generally zestiest of Shakespearean comedies, before heading out on their first ever national tour. We produce our own Christmas show for younger children for the first time, The Lost Present, and have an all-round almighty Brewery programme to complement the gorgeous café that’s recently opened there; we continue to be incredibly ambitious for this intimate theatre. Our comedy line-up, which has now extended to the Brewery theatre, is really excellent – I’m particularly looking forward to the unique Simon Munnery. I really hope you find shows to love in this season and that we see you here soon.

THE 2012 PRODUCTION OF

YES, We Have No Bananas THE MINISTRY OF ENTERTAINMENT

The Ministry of Entertainment return to the TFT with a reworking of their hit show Yes, We Have No Bananas, part of MoE’s highly successful wartime trilogy. Like Doodlebugs and Bogeymen and Keep Smiling Through, Yes, We Have No Bananas is based on oral histories collected by the company from those who lived in Bristol, Somerset and Dorset during the war years. The action takes place in a grocery shop in Weymouth during the lead up to D-Day. In true MOE fashion, into the shop come a variety of customers, from the indomitable Mrs Fricker to the Yank who will eventually win the heart of Doreen, the shopkeeper’s daughter. This new production is written by Joe Hobbs, with music by Kit Morgan and is performed by Kate McNab and Ross Harvey. Yes, We Have No Bananas promises to be comic, sometimes bizarre, respectful and authentic and interwoven with lovely songs of the era.

HANSEL AND GRETeL New International Encounter and Tobacco Factory Theatre

After the runaway success of Cinderella: A Fairytale, the Tobacco Factory Theatre presents another delightful interpretation of a Brothers Grimm story, brought to festive life through enchanting storytelling and live music. In the middle of a cold, dark forest Hansel and Gretel are lost and hungry. But as they sit, shivering, they glimpse a tiny cottage through the trees... a cottage that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Its roof is made of gingerbread, the walls are made of chocolate cake, the door is made of boiled sweets and the windows of clear sugar glaze, but what’s inside? This Christmas, follow Hansel and Gretel into the frozen forest and find out. The Tobacco Factory Theatre and international awardwinning theatre company New International Encounter join forces to bring you an enchanting show that will transform the Factory into a magical winter woodland. Adapting the classic fairytale Hansel and Gretel with a mix of brilliantly fun live music, clowning, humour, language and storytelling, this is a wonderful Christmas show for all the family. Count magnus: two ghost stories by m R James

seabright productions

NUNkie theatre company

Written by Mike Davis and Rob Crouch Performed by Rob Crouch Directed by Kate Bannister

Nunkie returns to the Brewery Theatre with two more unforgettable tales by the master of the English ghost story – Montague Rhodes James.

In this blistering solo show, join legendary hell raiser Oliver Reed as he knocks back a few drinks and shares his incredible life story. From the boyhood excitement of learning he was a descendant of Peter the Great, through the success of Oliver!, boozy adventures with Keith Moon and disastrous chat show appearances – this was a life well lived. But though Ollie may appear an unstoppable force of nature, this is Malta in 1999, and time is fast running out for the ‘Wild Thing’. Rob Crouch brings renowned actor Reed back to vivid life in a swaggering, brilliant evening of entertainment. “Brilliantly realised, skilfully written and touchingly performed.” *****☆British Theatre Guide “Rob Crouch not only resembles, sounds, scares and excites as Oliver Reed. He’s so convincing you feel like sharing a whisky with him afterwards…” **** Edinburgh Evening News “Pick of the Fringe” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

At first they hear nothing at all. Then they hear someone – you know how far away it is – they hear someone scream, just as if the most inside part of his soul was twisted out of him. Over 150 years since his birth, the ghost stories of M R James thrill, amuse and terrify as powerfully today as they ever did. Nunkie Theatre Company brings two more of his stories to life in a thrilling new one-man show, performed by Robert Lloyd Parry. In the first of these stories, Count Magnus, a travelwriter’s over-inquisitiveness leads to a breathless, diabolical chase from darkest Sweden to rural Essex. Denmark is then the setting for Number 13, where a hotel room with the famously unlucky number conceals a ghastly and baffling secret. “Lloyd Parry is always absorbing, and catches the sense of dread that gives James his originality.” **** The Times (on A Pleasing Terror) Running time 1hr 50 mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation 13+

The Tiger and Borges and i the Moustache Idle Motion

Where do we come from and what makes us who we are? Is our destiny written in the stars or stamped in a passport? We all have a journey to make, stupid girl, even you. Born on the very first day of a new nation, Hashi, the girl who always smiles, grew up surrounded by flying tigers in the Sunderban jungles. In The Tiger and the Moustache, local actor and writer Saikat Ahamed (TFT’s Cinderella: A Fairytale, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Bristol Old Vic’s Treasure Island and Peter Pan) traces the journey of Hashi, his mother, and the emerging nation of Bangladesh. Travel with him as he slides in and out of time, from the agonies of Partition in 1947 right up to the present day, boarding fishing boats up the Meghna River and rickshaws along the dusty roads of Dacca.

A stunning piece of visual theatre that explores our relationship with books, reading and the imagination. Idle Motion return to the Brewery Theatre with their Total Theatre Award-nominated show Borges and I, an evocative exploration of the life of the writer Jorge Luis Borges, who questioned and translated the world around him. Through the use of multimedia, imaginative staging and skilled storytelling, Idle Motion brings forth images of labyrinths, tigers and a universe of libraries. Meanwhile, a couple meet at a haphazard and ill-conceived book group, brought together through their shared love of literature. Idle Motion are a young company with big ideas and a passion for creating new work. They developed Borges and I in association with Greenwich Theatre and the New Diorama Theatre, where they are an Associate Company. They are also supported by Arts Council England, the British Council and award-winning actress Juliet Stevenson.

From East London to East Bengal, taking in Birmingham, Germany and Glasgow, this story of Bangladesh is woven together through storytelling, theatre, live music, dance and a healthy amount of humour.

“A brilliant emerging company.” The Guardian

The Tiger and the Moustache (previously Bangladesh) was originally developed with support from Bristol Ferment at Bristol Old Vic.

“Dedicated, insightful, inspired…definitely a company to keep an eye on.” **** Broadway Baby

“...the balance of comedy and tragedy worked really well. The performance was captivating.” Audience feedback (on a scratch performance of Bangladesh)

“A poetic and visual feast…deeply powerful… a true ensemble piece.” The Stage

RICHARD III

william shakespeare SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY

Watch the ruthless Duke of Gloucester charm, deceive and murder his way to power in this famously unhistorical history play. The luckless brother drowned in a butt of malmsey wine, the two young nephews brutally murdered in the Tower, the kingdom offered for a horse – these are just some of the legendary moments in this most popular of Shakespeare’s English tragedies. While he may have been less concerned to pursue historical truth than to please his Queen (Elizabeth’s grandfather had supplanted Richard as King at the Battle of Bosworth Field), Shakespeare still constructed one of theatre’s most gripping and convincing accounts of political intrigue and power-play. SATTF gathers one of its largest-ever casts to people Richard’s tumultuous world in its first production of this great play. “The Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory seasons have been one of the glories of Bristol theatre for the past decade or more.” Whatsonstage, 2012

AN AUDIENCE WITH

RETURN JOURNEY THE DUKE OF WINDSOR RICHARD JORDAN PRODUCTIONS LTD & ASSEMBLY Original Direction by Anthony Hopkins Performed by Bob Kingdom

This critically acclaimed portrayal embraces the myth of the tortured artist and a life distinguished by exuberantly successful highs and pathetically undignified lows. Playing a man who wrestled with the psychological conflict between creative talent and self-destructive impulse, Bob Kingdom’s remarkable portrait of Dylan Thomas offers a chance to experience the electrifying presence of Dylan Thomas’ last great lecture tour en-route to the White Horse Tavern. Blending the stories and the poetry with incisive comments on the nature of performing the American touring circuit, the audience is taken from Wales, past and present to the one that lies after. Anthony Hopkins’ minimalist original direction brings performer and audience together in appreciation of the beauty, the humour, the passion and wit of the words of this infamous writer. Dylan Thomas: Return Journey has enjoyed sell-out seasons in London and New York and has toured worldwide. It received great reception at the TFT on two previous runs and makes a triumphant return to the theatre this season. “I could have listened to his spell-binding, word wizardry for hours.” The Times “Kingdom is rightly regarded as a master of this one-hander genre and the time flies by as he draws his audience in and leaves us spellbound. Bravo!” Daily Mirror Running time 1hr 40mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation 12+

RICHARD JORDAN PRODUCTIONS LTD & ASSEMBLY Written and Performed by Bob Kingdom

Following the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the multi-award winning films The King’s Speech and W.E., comes an explosive and gripping new stage play telling the true behindthe-scenes story of Edward Duke of Windsor and the relationship with his ghost writer as they attempt to write his memoir A King’s Story for a million dollars. Drawn from extensive research, this is the never-before-seen revelatory story of one man’s dilemma between love and money, following Life Magazine’s relentless pursuit for a ‘tell all’ best-selling book – but at what cost? Bob Kingdom is one of the UK’s most successful writer/ performers. His acclaimed play and performance in The Truman Capote talk show won the Fringe First Award in Edinburgh and has toured extensively throughout the UK and internationally. “Enthralling.” The Telegraph “Bob Kingdom is magnificent.” Variety “Bob Kingdom’s performances and plays are a winning formula which strike gold every time; legendary, entertaining, and not to be missed.” BBC Running time 1hr 40mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation 12+

the game show

UnlimIted Theatre and Bush theatre Written and directed by Clare Duffy Designed by Rhys Jarman Performed by Lucy Ellinson & Brian Ferguson

What is money? What is it worth? And what happens if we stop believing in it?

Young Charles Dickens is a rookie reporter on The Morning Chronicle. Whilst investigating the foggy slums of Ye Olde London Towne, he accidently stumbles on a story that could make his reputation. Follow our hero on the adventure of a lifetime!

Casino and Queenie used to be hedge fund managers. Before the financial crisis of 2008, that is. Now, in an inspired – or desperate – career move, they’ve turned to performance art to share their stories of how to make (and lose) billions from economic downturn.

This inventive and gripping comedy features just three actors playing over 20 roles in 80 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. Brimming with unfeasibly quick costume changes, stupidly surreal characters and wonderfully daft jokes, What The Dickens? is the most absurd contribution to the Dickens bicentenary you can hope to see.

Playing with £10,000 in real pound coins, you are invited to bet long, short and hedge, as Casino and Queenie guide you through a series of high stake games that demonstrate how close the world’s economic system came to the precipice of total collapse.

Following their hit performances of I’m An Aristocrat, Get Me Out Of Here! at the Tobacco Factory Theatre in 2012, as well as a national tour of their Grimm And Grimmer, Gonzo Moose are back with their hilarious, anarchic comedy theatre. “A riot from start to finish.” ***** Venue Magazine “An exuberant mash-up of improvisation, physical theatre, slapstick and satire.” The Stage “Anarchic comedy theatre at its best.” **** Fringe Review (on Is That a Bolt In Your Neck?)

MONEY the game show takes a playful and politically sharp look at the roots of the 2008 financial crisis and its ongoing impact. “A fiercely showbiz affair…. the writing glitters with an unexpected brilliance.” **** The Scotsman “The excellent Unlimited Theatre... a company that has always combined infinite thoughtfulness with theatrical flair.” The Guardian (on Unlimited Theatre) Running time 1hr 15mins Age recommendation 14+

Two gentlemen of verona william shakespeare SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY

Friendship and love, and loyalty and betrayal are the real players in this darkly comic early romance. Two lifelong friends – the two young gentlemen of the title – are parted first by circumstance, and then by rivalry in love. Can their loyalty to each other survive the test, or will new loyalties drive out the old? How deep into perfidy can one be driven by sexual obsession? And what do even the most adored of women count for in a profoundly masculine world? Shakespeare’s vision is shocking and extraordinarily modern. In support will be two of Shakespeare’s funniest clowns, exquisite music (this is the play that the famous ‘Who is Sylvia?’ song comes from) and – trying to completely ruin the party – the disgracefully incontinent dog, Crab. After the Tobacco Factory Theatre run, this production will embark on SATTF’s first national tour, generously funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

The Count of Monte Cristo

the agony and the ecstasy of steve jobs

company boudin

Written by Alexandre Dumas Directed by Andy Burden

Company Boudin’s energetic, exciting and rousing adaptation of the epic book that everyone should read. Edmund Dantes is wrongly imprisoned by his rivals. Incarcerated in Chateau d’If, a fellow prisoner assists in his escape and tells of a secret stash of treasure on a remote island. Dantes reinvents himself as the Count of Monte Cristo and sets out to reward those who had stood by him and to seek his revenge on those who had him arrested. In this new adaptation from Company Boudin and directed by Andy Burden, the book is retold and re-enacted by the workers of a cigar factory who are read ‘Monte Cristo’ everyday whilst they work. But quickly the factory fades away and we are transported into the dramatic world of Dumas’ book… From the company who brought you Henry V and the director of Henry VIII & The Royal Wedding Planner, Pinocchio and A Christmas Carol.

GILDED BALLOON PRODUCTIONS

A harrowing yet hilarious tale exploring the legality and morality of electronic sweatshops in China, complete with armed guards, underage workers and an insight into the toxic effects of hexane. Meet Steve Jobs and the Chinese workers toiling to make our beloved iPhones. Starring Grant O’Rourke, playwright Mike Daisey’s monologue is an emboldened, passionate diatribe that will make you question what you thought you knew about one of the world’s most worshipped brands. This is one of the most talked about pieces of theatre to come out of the USA in the last few years and has not been without controversy. This is a tale that was broadcast and subsequently retracted from the popular radio programme This American Life; a tale that has clearly gotten under the skin of audiences and media alike.

“An engaging drama with a playful ingenuity and great spirit” **** The Guardian (on Henry V)

As a self-confessed ‘worshipper at the church of Apple’, Daisey tugs at heart strings, and demonstrates how one man’s story might not be able to topple an empire, but it can certainly give it a righteous shove.

“A Small Masterpiece” ***** Venue (on Henry VIII & The Royal Wedding Planner)

“I will never be the same after seeing that show.” Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder, to The New York Times.

Running time 1hr 30 mins (interval tbc) Age recommendation 9+

“A remarkable and almost frighteningly timely piece of work” **** The Scotsman “A fantastically good story and one that if you have an iPhone in your pocket you won’t want to hear.” The Guardian Running time 1hr 15mins Age recommendation 12+

COMEDIAN DIES IN THE MIDDLE OF JOKE

The Bear

SHOW AND TELL

Devised by Ross Sutherland

November 1983: comedian Joe ‘Pops’ Pooley is headlining his local comedy club and no one’s laughing.

angela Clerkin in Co-Production with Improbable

A taut, tense and funny show about an everyday murder and a mythical bear. Angela is a solicitor’s clerk. She works with the defence team during criminal trials. The job brings her face to face with people accused of GBH, rape and murder.

April 2013: with your help, his murder is reconstructed. Re-live Joe’s last set over and over and over again in this interactive piece of auto-theatre set in an eighties comedy club, devised by Time Out award-winning Ross Sutherland.

In the cells under the Old Bailey, Angela meets her client who is on trial for murder. “I didn’t do it.” He says. “The Bear did it.” He’s obviously lying. Or mad. This is London after all. But when she examines all the evidence, reads all the files, there it is again. The Bear. Someone else saw it. Without quite knowing why, Angela finds herself hunting The Bear. Until she discovers The Bear is hunting her.

Choose any role in the reconstruction you like: bouncer, barman, critic, a member of the rowdy party table, or even the comedian himself. When your time comes, can you die with some dignity?

The Bear is directed by Lee Simpson and designed by Tony & Olivier award-winning designer Rae Smith (National Theatre’s Warhorse), with performances by Improbable Associate Artist’s Angela Clerkin and Guy Dartnell.

“Sutherland’s innovative piece of theatre is a true celebration of the audience and what they’re capable of” **** The Scotsman

Experience this film noir thriller with added beartastic facts and revenge songs.

“A Choose Your Own Adventure of a comedy gig... It’s a lot of fun” **** The Independent Age recommendation 18+ Running time 1hr 5mins *Sometimes there’s a show that we’d love to give to Bristol audiences but our spaces just aren’t quite right for it. So we’re planning to programme up to one show per season off-site in a unique, intimate and visceral space that makes it sing. Comedian Dies in the Middle of Joke at The Hen & Chicken is the first of these shows.

“Improbable... is one of the most energising and provocative forces in British theatre” The Guardian Angela, Guy and Lee all performed in Improbable’s Lifegame: “Truly fantastic theatre – spontaneous, unique, universal and mythological” The Guardian “War Horse was beautifully designed by Rae Smith” New York Times Angela Clerkin in co-production with Improbable, in association with Ovalhouse

“Absolutely superlative stuff.” Chortle

It has been over a year since his father died, and Sean is dealing with his death in a way that only Sean can. Here is a comedy performance like you’ve never seen before, resulting in the feel-good show of the year.

After walking the wall in the West Bank, becoming Guinness World Record holder for political protests and chasing arms dealers around the country, Mark Thomas turns his attention to matters closer to home with a show about his father.

This hilarious yet poignant tale is a beautiful insight into the lighter side of dying and getting older, going to places that comedy rarely goes, highlighting how ridiculous life is and how quickly it can be taken away.

First commissioned by the Royal Opera house Bravo Figaro is the true tale of a self-employed builder’s love of opera, degenerative illness and how to put opera on in a bungalow in Bournemouth.

Prototype is quite simply one of the most exhilarating nights out in Bristol’s theatrical calendar. Prototype audiences love theatre. They want theatre to be the best it can be, and that’s why they’re the most supportive, engaged and generous champions of live performance around. They’re rewarded by being given the opportunity to be amazed on an almost obscenely regular basis by the groundswell of talent in this here city. I’m betting that if you’re not one of these people already, you definitely want to be, so here’s a step-by-step guide: 1. Watch what five artists/companies are working on right now – rough and ready, risky and just maybe The Next Big Thing. 2. Grab a drink from the bar. 3. Head back into the auditorium to answer the artists’ questions on what you’ve just seen. 4. Return to the bar to talk some more. Simple. We’ll see you there.

It’s very simple, really: we’re looking for exciting writing from exciting writers whom we’d like to work with further. We are interested in plays about anything, by anybody, for any audience. We’re looking for writers who’ve got something that speaks to us about our lives today, about the world in which we live – be it the absurdity, tragedy or beauty of it – with clarity, intention and heart. We’re looking for something we’ve never seen before, be that a promenade site-specific farce about pig-farming with a cast of thirty, or a monologue in spotlight for an audience of one. Are we looking for you? Our popular Lunchtime Talks are becoming something of an institution, and it’s pretty easy to see why. SATTF’s artistic director Andrew Hilton is a consummate public speaker and his reflections on how he arrived at his staging of this season’s plays make for fascinating listening. There’s a chance to hear from the cast, too, and to find out how their understanding of the plays developed over the course of rehearsals. It’s stimulating stuff, and a rare opportunity to get a real feel for how this internationally renowned company do what they do. And let’s not forget lunch! Included in the ticket price is a delicious buffet lunch sourced from local independent North Street businesses. Unsurprisingly, the Lunchtime Talks sell out quickly, so we recommend booking for them early, to ensure you’re not disappointed. Please note These talks are not ‘an introduction’ to the season’s shows; we ask that everyone attending them has already seen the production in question, as this allows the discussion to be both deeper and more wide-ranging.
