The last twelve months it felt like this theatre matured. Working with a range of inspiring partners we made some of the best work we’ve ever produced here in Bristol, and we exported it around the country as well; gaining an Olivier nomination and producing hits in London, Edinburgh and elsewhere. Next year looks set, dare we say it, to be even better. I am excited about Christmas as I have been for ages, looking forward to welcoming the brilliant creatives that have been working for months on The Last Voyage of Sinbad the Sailor plus the trusted team that are making Super Sam and Mega Max Save Christmas. Alongside the surefire hit As You Like It, SATTF will be producing their first contemporary play with one of the undeniably great works of the 20th Century, Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia. In the Brewery Theatre highlights include Paines Plough with the wonderful Kate Tempest’s new show Hopelessly Devoted as well as Supporting Wall with the incredible new Philip Ridley play Dark Vanilla Jungle. We are proud to be producing ever more work ourselves: apart from the two Christmas shows, we are producing a Chris Goode creation (Infinite Lives), a new play from Tobacco Factory Theatres favourite Thomas Eccleshare, a new tour of the wonderful Banksy: The Room in the Elephant and a new production of a 500 year old play in Arnos Vale Cemetery (Death and the Ploughman). Anyone who has been to the Factory Theatre over the last few months will have noticed the new seating: it’s infinitely more comfortable, better raked and smarter and we’re thrilled with it. From early 2014 we are introducing reserved seating, in response to overwhelming feedback from audiences. Initially you can reserve seats for As You Like It, Arcadia and Banksy: The Room in the Elephant and we anticipate reserved seating for more shows over the next year. Finally – we are changing our name. All this activity means that our beloved name of Tobacco Factory Theatre was struggling to cope. We are making the small change to Tobacco Factory Theatres so that we can better describe all the work we do. We hope you like the change, if you even notice it, and we hope we see lots of you during this season.

NORMAL SERVICE WILL BE RESUMED… THE MINISTRY OF ENTERTAINMENT

Celebrating their 15th year of sell out touring, The Ministry of Entertainment return to the Brewery Theatre with their latest hit production. It’s 1962 and things are not looking good. Kennedy and Khruschev are about to collide over Cuba, but the real trouble is brewing thousands of miles away, deep below the surface of Bristol. In a top-secret location, Skippy Catford, the ninny in the pinnie, cheerily mops away twenty years’ worth of dust and grime from the BBC’s emergency wartime studio. She hums the latest Brenda Lee whilst daydreaming about Stanton Drew, everybody’s favourite velvet-voiced radio celebrity. When the Cold War suddenly heats up, Stanton and Skippy are trapped underground with nothing but a pair of coconut shells and a swanee whistle to keep themselves amused. A whole bag of spanners drops into the world of Auntie and Listen with Mother will never be the same again. Normal Service Will Be Resumed… is a perfect blend of songs, excellent theatre and hilarious comedy, written by Mike Akers, with music by Kit Morgan and starring Kate McNab and Ross Harvey. “Another magical piece…” The Stage on Yes, We Have No Bananas

INFINITE LIVES

£6 SEE P02

TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES

Written by the critically acclaimed Chris Goode, Infinite Lives is an erotic, numerical and technological journey into a world which is increasingly using the virtual to define itself. So you fall to your death. But you don’t die. You just come back to life and you’re falling. You’re falling and dying and coming back to life and falling. And you’ll never die. You have infinite lives. John’s cat died a year ago. Now he’s quit his job and is trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to write his new gay science fiction novel. He’s also become obsessed with an internet chatroom model. Called Carlos. He thinks. As the bit streams of data fly past and reality becomes ever harder to define, John is forced to question how much he is still in control of his own life. Chris Goode is the award winning writer of shows including The Adventures of Wound Man and Shirley, Hippo World Guest Book and most recently, Monkey Bars. Like much of Goode’s work, Infinite Lives is hauntingly poetic; it explores what it means to be lonely in an age when we have more means to connect with each other than ever before. The first full UK production of Infinite Lives will be directed by Nik Partridge, graduate director from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, who is working with Tobacco Factory Theatres this year as part of the BBC Theatre Fellowship 2013. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY

Both funny and moving, this is Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the meaning of love, its madness and transcendence. Expelled from the city, Rosalind and Orlando – the one fleeing a tyrannous uncle, the other a murderous brother – rediscover each other in the Forest of Arden. But what awaits them in that Arcadian wilderness? Will they find true love, or just lose themselves? Are they merely players in a pastoral fantasy, or do they have a rare opportunity – to explore the reality of their feelings free from all the normal constrictions of courtly convention and parental oversight? Following the success of last year’s tour of Two Gentlemen of Verona, this production will embark on the company’s second UK tour immediately after its Factory Theatre run – generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. “An unblinking portrait of love’s madness” The Independent on Two Gentlemen of Verona

THE ONLY WAY IS DOWNTON SEABRIGHT PRODUCTIONS

Written and performed by Luke Kempner Directed by Owen Lewis Script edited by Jeremy Limb

Direct from a West End season, this is the first national tour of Luke Kempner’s tour-de-force impressions comedy. Having made his name with YouTube hit Downstairs At Downton, and appearances in musicals including Les Mis and Avenue Q, Luke Kempner’s debut solo show had sell-out audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe last year. As celebrities start appearing at the Abbey, cultures clash and eras hilariously collide in this brilliant new parody, which takes in many other popular TV shows and familiar modern voices to help the cast of Downton save the estate from financial ruin – again! This extended version of The Only Way is Downton features exclusive new material. Whether you’re a Downton expert or novice, this wonderfully funny show is sure to go down a treat. “Remarkable, tour de force one-man show” **** Daily Telegraph “A tightly written and performed mash-up” **** Independent on Sunday “Lovely spoof…spot-on” Radio Times “A fine impressionist” Stephen Fry “Really good impressions of everybody” Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora in Downton Abbey) Running time 1hr 40mins (inc. interval) Age recommendation 14+

366 DAYS OF KINDNESS

WHITE RABBIT IN ASSOCIATION WITH BIRMINGHAM REPERTORY THEATRE AND JACKSON’S LANE

Laugh, gasp and cry as you hear the stories of one woman who tried to change the world by being kind. In response to the riots of August 2011, Bernadette Russell made a promise that she would be kind to a stranger every single day for a year. 366 Days of Kindness tells the heartbreaking, surprising and challenging stories that came out of that year; the year that began with burning buildings and ended with the flame of the Olympic torch, against a global backdrop of social unrest and economic crisis. Part storytelling, part stand-up, part live documentary and featuring a dinner party with surprise guests including the Dalai Lama and Princess Diana, 366 Days of Kindness is a touching performance and attempts to answer the question: Is it possible to change the world just by being kind? Written and performed by Bernadette Russell and Gareth Brierley and directed by Tessa Walker (Paines Plough and National Theatre of Scotland). HAMMER & TONGS THEATRE ALIBI

For anyone who’s ever craved the last word, this is Theatre Alibi’s very human comedy about arguing… Hammer & Tongs digs deep into the human compulsion to argue the toss. Two men and a woman quibble, tiptoe into tiffs, debate high-mindedly, negotiate shoals of red herrings, take offence and descend into glorious, undignified, disgraceful bad behaviour. From farcical fisticuffs at a wedding disco to squabbling for control of the TV remote, Theatre Alibi presents a very human comedy – physical, funny, absurd, musical, moving, and absolutely bloody-minded! Theatre Alibi has a terrific reputation for creating new work that’s imaginative, funny and touching. DEATH AND THE PLOUGHMAN

THE MECHANICAL ANIMAL CORPORATION IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES AND ARNOS VALE CEMETERY TRUST Written by Johannes von Saaz Translated by Michael West

An extraordinary, site specific production amid the stunning landscape of Arnos Vale Cemetery. Originally written in Bohemia, 1401, Johannes von Saaz’s scintillating dialogue was penned the day after he lost his wife in childbirth. Refusing to accept this fate, von Saaz and Death lock horns in an epic journey through despair, laughter and love, in this lyrical exploration of what it is to lose someone. If Death appeared to us in 21st Century Britain, what form would it take? Inspired by the late medieval fascination with the Dance of Death, The Mechanical Animal Corporation has created a compelling, site-specific interpretation across the stunning 45-acre landscape and buildings of Arnos Vale Cemetery.

“The tale moves charismatically between dream worlds, human environments and watery realms to craft a very modern love story that casts a considerable spell” **** The Guardian on Cobbo

Directed by Tom Bailey (Finalist for JMK Award 2013 for emerging theatre directors) and designed by Chris Gylee (Idiot Child and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory).

“Heart-gladdening theatre…Immensely enjoyable” **** The Guardian on The Crowstarver

Illuminating the power of von Saaz’s vision, this semi-promenade show is an unforgettable, tragicomic encounter with Death.

An award winning drama about one girl’s craving for family and home… and the lengths she’ll go to achieve them. Andrea keeps getting asked if she’s ashamed. Ashamed of what she did to the soldier. Of what she did to the baby. But she’s not ashamed at all. And she wants to tell you why. The latest work by Time Out, Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Award-winner Philip Ridley, this Fringe First Award winning, Stage Award-nominated 2013 Edinburgh hit comes to Bristol as part of a UK tour. Starring Game of Thrones’s Gemma Whelan, Dark Vanilla Jungle takes the audience on a sweeping, intimate journey that draws on themes of gang culture, female objectification and the impact of trauma on young people. ARCADIA

TOM STOPPARD

SHAKESPEARE AT THE TOBACCO FACTORY

Intriguing, challenging and witty – but also heartfelt – this play has been widely acclaimed as Stoppard’s masterpiece. In 1809 the grounds of a stately home are being reconstructed in the newly popular ‘picturesque’ style. Amid towering crags and waterfalls will be a lonely hermitage, for which a real, living hermit will have to be found. Two centuries later, as an author and an academic pursue their very different lines of research, the hermit will be discovered to have been a madman. But what had driven him to madness, what was the purpose of the piles of notes discovered with his body, and what part had the young daughter of the house played in his tragic life? Crossing the centuries – and changing notions of the Arcadian dream – are mysteries of history, sex, chaos theory and Newtonian equations; and an accusation of murder against Lord Byron. SATTF is proud to present Arcadia as its first contemporary theatre production. “I have never left a new play more convinced that I’d just witnessed a masterpiece” Daily Telegraph on Arcadia at its National Theatre debut

A NEW PLAY BY

THOMAS ECCLESHARE

A PLAY A PIE AND A PINT TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES AND ÒRAN MÓR

A reclusive children’s writer becomes wildly successful. Her books are treasured the length and breadth of the country: dog-eared copies are read at bedtimes and swapped in playgrounds. But when one day the secret leaks out that she is not the innocent, benevolent woman that everyone assumes, we find ourselves asking: What matters more? The storyteller or the story? Thomas Eccleshare is the Verity Bargate Award winning writer of Pastoral and the Co-artistic Director of Dancing Brick. He’s currently the writer in residence at the Soho Theatre in London and he also played the role of the Prince in our Olivier nominated co-production of Cinderella: A Fairytale. Following the great success of the first productions from our a Play, a Pie and a Pint series (co-produced with Glasgow’s Òran Mór) in Autumn 2012, we’re delighted to present this popular series again this year. “Tremendous… a splendid piece” **** The Times on Pastoral “A masterclass in how to deliver imaginative new writing” **** The Telegraph on Pastoral Running time 45mins Age recommendation 14+ Mark’s Café is delighted to support a Play, a Pie and a Pint STEVE MARMION, Artistic Director, Soho Theatre

BANKSY: THE ROOM IN THE ELEPHANT

BC SEE P02

TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES AND THE SUM

Following a sell out run at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a transfer to the Arcola Theatre, London, Tom Wainwright’s wildly successful play returns home to our Brewery Theatre. Banksy was in LA for the Oscars when he sprayed ‘THIS LOOKS A BIT LIKE AN ELEPHANT’ on an old water tank. The tank was residence for a local legend, Tachowa Covington, who over seven years had furnished it with carpets, a stove – even CCTV. As news spread of Banksy’s latest work, a consortium of art dealers soon appeared to repossess the water tank. Suddenly, Tachowa was homeless again… Starring Gary Beadle (Eastenders’s Paul Truman as well as acclaimed roles in the Royal Court’s Sucker Punch and Chichester Festival Theatre’s Blue Remembered Hills) – this is a story about creating something from nothing and then having it taken away, in the name of art. Tom Wainwright’s play, originally commissioned by Tobacco Factory Theatres and a Play, a Pie and a Pint at Òran Mór, is directed by Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre and Co-artistic Director of Theatre Uncut, Emma Callander. It will be followed by a screening of Something From Nothing, documentary maker Hal Samples’ short film about Tachowa, edited from material gathered over 7 years. “A colourful and compelling performance by Beadle and a spunky, clever script that weaves poetry and street swagger from Tom Wainwright” The Stage Running time 1h 50mins (inc. documentary screening) Age recommendation 12+ DAVID MACLLENNAN, a Play, a Pie and a Pint at Òran Mór

One of the finest plays to have come out of a Play, a Pie and a Pint. A superb performance of a first class script.

If you thought tea time was just about eating you’ll be holding out your plate for more… Directed by Toby Hulse, who, together with Oxford Playhouse, brought us Bath Time for the Christmas 2011 season. “Not sure who laughed the most: adults or kids. SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII LIVING SPIT

A sell out hit at the Brewery Theatre last summer, and fresh from the Edinburgh Festival and a nationwide tour, The Six Wives of Henry VIII is back by popular demand for two last Bristolian hurrahs. With live original music, embroidery, Barbie dolls, silly songs and historical hysteria, this is an ill researched lesson in Tudor history that you’ll never forget, and this is the final chance to catch Howard and Stu before they put the portly Tudor monarch and his troubled bedfellows away. “Cleverly written, beautifully acted, and, dare I say it, educational. MILES JUPP LAURENCE SIMON IS THE MUNNERY CLARK CHAP YOU’RE THINKING OF THE COMEDY BOX

“Someone you could listen to forever on almost any subject” The British Comedy Guide Miles Jupp – actor, writer and comedian – is making a return to stand-up and going on his first live UK tour since the hugely successful Fibber In The Heat in 2012. Since then Miles has regularly appeared on Have I Got News For You, The News Quiz, and Mock The Week and has acted in Alan Bennett’s People at the National Theatre.

FYLM

“Slickly woven... cracking one-liners... Laurence Clark is firing on all cylinders” Metro

“One of the funniest and most original comedians of the past 20 years”

Find out why Laurence Clark – star of BBC1’s documentary We Won’t Drop The Baby – hates being called ‘inspirational’. From mountain climbing to Doctor Who, via the Swedish chef from The Muppets, this inimitable comedian sorts out once and for all what’s truly inspiring. Expect absurd logic, death defying stunts and unusual varieties of crisps.

Multi award winning comedian Simon Munnery once more stabs at the void between film and live comedy, in his latest fylm-tastic live show. A show full of daring and imaginative comedy and live sketches all performed and projected live on screen. As recently seen and heard on BBC2’s Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, The Culture Show, Comedy Central’s The Alternative Comedy Experience and BBC Radio 4’s News Quiz.

THE COMEDY BOX

In this show Miles will be discussing/ ranting/describing: himself, you, domestic imprisonment, fatherhood, having to have opinions, and, inevitably, a number of other things.

Laurence was the only stand-up comedian commissioned by the London Olympics 2012, so if you’re sceptical when told to climb every mountain, reach for the skies and follow your dreams, then this is definitely the show for you!
