Nickel Creek is the internationally renowned roots trio of mandolinist Chris Thile, violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins. The Grammy-winning band has revolutionized folk and roots music since first performing together as children at a pizza parlor in San Diego in 1989, signing to acclaimed roots label Sugar Hill Records after wowing the bluegrass circuit for a decade. Nickel Creek quickly broke through in 2000 with their Grammy-nominated, Alison Kraussproduced self-titled LP, which showcased not just their instrumental virtuosity but their burgeoning songwriting prowess. The trio quickly followed that effort with the Krauss-produced This Side, a landmark release that earned Nickel Creek the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and brought their progressive take on acoustic music to a broader audience, greatly influencing the sound and trajectory of roots music in the process. 2005's Grammynominated Why Should the Fire Die? found the trio pushing genre boundaries even further, incorporating elements of alt-rock and indie pop into their singular brand of acoustic music. In 2014, Nickel Creek released the critically acclaimed and joyously received A Dotted Line, ended a seven-year recording and touring hiatus for the band. After another hiatus during which members explored other musical and creative avenues, the Platinum-selling, Grammy Awardwinning trio gathered for a creative retreat in Santa Barbara during the pandemic and emerged with a bounty of disparate but loosely connected songs that resulted in 2023's highly anticipated album, Celebrants. The record is perhaps their most audacious — with "18 interconnected tracks, Nickel Creek offers another world for listeners, not necessarily one to escape into — these songs are nuanced and honest, not fantasy — but one suited for introspection." (NPR) The entire enterprise is, naturally, shot through with the band's virtuosic picking and shiver-inducing harmonies. The lyrics — addressing love, friendship, time, and the universal travails of travel — combine the poetic and plain-spoken, hitting a sweet spot of ethereal and relatable as bridges are built, crossed, burned, and rebuilt.

The Endowed Sponsorship Program provides individuals and families with the opportunity to support Jorgensen by sponsoring any concert or other program. Benefits to Endowed Sponsors will include name recognition in the Jorgensen playbill, additional recognition in the community through press releases provided by the University, and an opportunity to visit with the guest artist.
Sponsorship could be a means of celebrating a special holiday or anniversary, or of dedicating an event to a loved one. Most importantly, by contributing to the cost of current programs, sponsors would help ensure that the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts will continue to present wonderful music and other programs in the future. Your gift would benefit not only Jorgensen, but also the community at large.
Patrons interested in sponsoring an event should contact Rodney Rock at 860-486-1983 or rodney.rock@uconn.edu for further information.
Funded through private contributions as well as corporate support, JOY! provides school-age children, many from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with access to live performances and special enrichment programs. Now in its 16th season, the JOY! Conservatory program offers instrumental and vocal students in grades 9-12 the opportunity for a rigorous course of study including private lessons, ensemble rehearsals and coaching, and basic musicianship courses. For more information, contact Jorgensen director Rodney Rock at 860-486-1983.

“The Bennewitz will soon have established itself at the very top of the international quartet world” wrote the Stuttgarter Zeitung, while the Frankfurter Allgemeine raved “Only very rarely does one experience such skillfully crafted and powerful harmonies… Great art!” Founded in 1998 in Prague and celebrating this year 25 years, the quartet was named after the famous Czech violinist and teacher Antonin Bennewitz (1833-1926), and established its reputation by winning the Osaka (2005) and the Premio Paolo Borciani (2008) competitions.
Since then the quartet has performed at numerous festivals (e.g. Rheingau, Heidelberger Frühling, The Lucerne, Lockenhaus, Orlando and Prague Spring) and major venues (Concertgebouw, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Theatre des Champs- Elysees, Herkulessaal, the Elbphilharmonie, Rudolfium, Wigmore Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, Musikverein Vienna, the Seoul Arts Center. In North America the group has been invited to e.g. the Frick Collection, Rockefeller University, the National Gallery, to Cleveland, Houston, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Jose, Palo Alto, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. It has become known for its “drama, expression, and utmost sensitivity” (The Strad) as well as its richly differentiated sound culture and interesting programming. Its broad repertoire spans from Bach fugues to the classical canon, and to the contemporary, and includes many lesser-known works. The quartet has been championing Czech music including works by neglected composers such as Reicha, Haas, Ullmann, and Schulhoff. It has performed the Martinu Concerto for String Orchestra with the Czech Philharmonic and also gave the Czech premiere of John Adams’ Absolute Jest with the Prague Radio Symphony.
In the fall of 2017, the quartet became the ensemble-in residence for the Czech Philharmonic, performing in Prague’s Dvorak Hall. It has played the Weinberg piano quintet with Alexander Melnikov at the Society Filarmonica de Bilbaro, performed with Lukas Vondracek at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and took part in the complete Haydn cycle at Wigmore Hall.
Of its CDs with works by Bartok and Janacek, Fonoforum testified to their “fiery temperament” and found that theirs is a “sovereign balanced sound culture”. Klassik.com described their recording of the string quartets of Smetana as “simply phenomenal”. They recorded Dvorak Cypresses with baritone Martin Bruns and Dvorak quartets Nos.10 and 13. In 2018 Cech TV recorded a Janacek CD in Villa Tugendhat in Brno (Mies van der Rohe). The quartet was awarded the 2019 Classic Prague Awards for the Best Chamber Music Recording of their concerts of Schumann, Martinu and Schubert at the Rudolfinum. The recording of the music of Ullmann, Schulhoff, Krasa and Haas was named Editor’s Choice by Presto Classical and was selected as Record of the Week by Europadisc. Its latest recording with works by Haydn was released in 2023 and Diapason writes “The round, sensual, silky sound of the Bennewitz recalls the great tradition of twentieth-century Czech ensembles. Their interpretations are distinguished by a perfect mastery of style and real experience of this repertoire” while The Strad says “A rare sense of a studio performance living in the moment of its creation”.
The quartet has made several recordings for Czech radio and television, as well for a number of radio and television companies throughout Europe, Japan and Canada.
The Bennewitz studied with Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartet, and with Walter Levin of the former La Salle Quartet. In addition to the Osaka and Borciani, the quartet garnered several other prizes including Laureate of the Chamber Music Society of the Czech Philharmonic, the award of the Spanish Queen for best chamber music ensemble, as well as two special prizes at the ARD Music Competition.
In every 10 years, the year that ends in a “4”, is called in the Czech Republic “the Year of Czech Music”. In 2024, however, this year of Czech music has an additional special reason for celebration: it celebrates the birth of Smetana in 1824 (200 years) and of Janacek in 1854 (170 years) and commemorates the death of Dvorak in 1904 (120 years). This is the reason why the Bennewitz will perform for you a program of all - Czech music.
