Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents: Songs We Love
Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents SONGS WE LOVE: 50 Years of Jazz Song is a celebration of the history of American jazz — and its future.
Songs We Love was first presented as the 2016 Season Opener at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. True to its mission "to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education, and advocacy," JALC made the program available to other cities, but in short outings. Now, as a result of JALC's partnership with the international booking agency IMG Artists, Songs We Love: 50 Years of Jazz Song will reach 47 cities across the country, from major markets including Los Angeles, CA, and Atlanta, GA, to smaller yet significant destinations such as Fish Creek, WI, and Orono, ME.
With this expanded 2023 touring initiative, Jazz at Lincoln Center provides a wide range of concert presenters an opportunity to offer excellent jazz programming while introducing to a broader audience the musicians who will reinterpret and reimagine the sound of jazz for years to come.
In Songs We Love: 50 Years of Jazz Song, a superb ensemble of up-andcoming players, schooled and tested on the stages of Jazz at Lincoln Center and concert halls around the world, will revisit some of the great songs from the first decades of jazz. Under the musical direction of trumpeter Riley Mulherkar and featuring vocalists Vuyo Sotashe, Brianna Thomas, and Shenel Johns, the ensemble will bring to life songs and styles that define the sound of jazz singing from the 1920s to the early 1950s. It's a journey of blues, swing, and surprise, from the sound of Ma Rainey and the extraordinary storytelling of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to the easy swing of Frank Sinatra and the dramatic flair of Judy Garland.
The repertoire includes gems such as the traditional blues "See See Rider," first recorded in 1924 by Ma Rainey, and Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr.'s "God Bless the Child," a classic ballad first recorded in 1941. The song was sparked by the line "God bless the child that's got his own," which Holiday's mother used in an argument with her daughter. It was celebrated in 2001 as one of the Songs of the Century by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. The program also includes jewels by masters of songcraft such as George Gershwin ("I Loves You Porgy"), Cole Porter ("So in Love"), and Harold Arlen ("Over the Rainbow," first sung by Judy Garland in "The Wizard of Oz," in 1939). These songs have remained an inspiration and a reference for generations of jazz and pop performers and songwriters.
Musical director Riley Mulherkar has worked with leading artists such as trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, and actress, playwright, and educator Anna Deavere Smith. He is a founder of The Westerlies, a New York-based brass quartet that conjures a blend of jazz, roots, and chamber music influences in its music. Recognized by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and much decorated as a player and leader, Mulherkar is deeply engaged in educational outreach. He served as Artistic Director for Jazz at Joye in Aiken, South Carolina; directed the Summer Advanced Institute at Seattle JazzEd (2017-2019); and served as an ambassador for Jazz at Lincoln Center's "Jazz for Young People" program in New York and St. Louis (2016 – 2018).
The vocalists on tour include South African singer Vuyo Sotashe, now a Harlem resident, who was the first male singer ever to place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal competition; Brianna Thomas, described by The New York Times as an interpreter with "a strong voice and a big range, descended from Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter and routed through Dianne Reeves, with clarity and confidence and a little dirt"; and Shenel Johns, whose personal style incorporates the influences of classic jazz voices such as Ella Fitzgerald, Abbey Lincoln, and Sarah Vaughn, but can move effortlessly from jazz to R&B to gospel.
The sextet accompanying Riley Mulherkar and the vocalists features Mariel Bildsten, the lead trombonist in Arturo O'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra; Lucas Pino, a much-recorded saxophonist with four albums as a leader; pianist Mathis Picard who recently released his three-track EP Live At Blue Llama; Barry Stephenson, one of the most sought-after bassists on the scene today; and drummer Taurien "TJ" Reddick, who has powered the bands of top artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, Nicholas Payton, and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
For over three decades, Jazz at Lincoln Center has been a global advocate for jazz, culture, and arts education. Stops in select cities in the tour will also include Let Freedom Swing educational shows, bringing outstanding jazz artists and performances to student audiences. Inspired by conversations between former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and JALC Manager and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, Let Freedom Swing includes three jazz concerts: "Jazz and Democracy," "Jazz and the Great Migration," and "Jazz and Civil Rights." Since 2013, "Let Freedom Swing" has reached nearly half a million students in over 3,000 concerts worldwide.

RILEY MULHERKAR (BANDLEADER, TRUMPET)
Trumpeter and bandleader Riley Mulkerhar has been recognized as a “smart young trumpet player” by The New York Times, praised by The Wall Street Journal as an artist “to keep an eye on,” and is a 2020 recipient of Lincoln Center’s Emerging Artist Award for his work as “an original bandleader, composer, arranger, educator, community activist and advocate for jazz and the arts.” Riley works with a number of leading artists of our time, including Wynton Marsalis, Anna Deavere Smith, and Alan Cumming, and is a founding member of The Westerlies, a new music brass quartet that creates the rarest of hybrids: music that is both “folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). Riley also serves as Artistic Director for Jazz at Joye in Aiken, bringing leading young talent to the historic city of Aiken, South Carolina.
BRIANNA THOMAS (VOCALIST)
Born and raised in Peoria, Illinois, Brianna grew up surrounded by music. Under the guiding hand of her talented father, at the age of eight she won her first of thirteen trophies from various district and regional talent shows and was soon performing for a variety of black tie affairs and as a guest on local radio stations, eventually touring Europe with the Peoria Jazz All-Stars. Brianna is the youngest person ever to be inducted into Peoria’s African-American Hall of Fame at the age of thirteen in 1996. Brianna’s singing is deeply enriched by an understanding of the masterful voices of jazz past, including Sarah Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dianne Reeves. She has performed at the Montreux, North Sea, and Umbria Jazz Festivals and in venues ranging from the Bahamas to Geneva, Switzerland. Brianna was a resident in both the 2001 and 2002 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead programs, an international artist-in-residence program with a focus on original compositions at the Kennedy Center. Legendary trombonist Curtis Fuller hails her as “a marvelous new artist who has all it takes to reach the top of the jazz profession and music in general.”
SHENEL JOHNS (VOCALIST)
With a voice that embodies grace and passion and a personal style that sways effortlessly from jazz to R&B to gospel, Shenel has emerged as one of the shining stars of her generation. A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Johns has been performing since she was fourteen years of age, and has developed a distinctive, eclectic style that has increasingly caught the attention of her peers and some of the industry’s top performers. Johns received a B.A. in music management from the Jackie McLean Institute at the Hartt School of Music and studied performance with jazz legends such as Rene McLean, Jimmy Greene, and Nat Reeves. She has shared the stage with music royalty including Curtis Fuller, Hank Jones, Dionne Warwick, and Sheila Jordan, and has performed and recorded with an impressive array of leaders in the field. In 2016, Johns completed a musical residency at Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha in Qatar and, several months later, honored Billie Holiday as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s New York production of Billie and the Boys. She has also paid tribute to another of her idols, Lena Horne, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s famed Appel Room. Most recently, Johns was the winner of the Riga Jazz Stage Competition in Riga, Latvia, and was featured in the Hartford Jazz Festival’s Ella Fitzgerald Tribute.
VUYO SOTASHE (VOCALIST)
Young South African jazz vocalist, Vuyo Sotashe, is gradually making his mark in the New York jazz scene. Sotashe moved to NYC in 2013 after being awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to complete a Master of Music degree at William Paterson University. Since then, he has gone on to win first prize at the very first Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2014, and performed on the festival's main stage in February of 2015. More recently, he won the Audience Prize Award and placed second overall at the Shure Montreux Jazz Voice Competition in 2015, held at the annual Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. In the same year, he placed third in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocal competition, where he was the very first male vocalist ever to place in the competition's finals. Vuyo is also the winner of the biggest music scholarship competition in South Africa, the South African Music Rights Foundation Scholarship, where he performed for the former South African President Thabo Mbeki. Vuyo Sotashe is currently performing around New York City with the noted drummer Winard Harper, whose credits include work with Betty Carter, Shirley Horn, and many other legends in jazz.

As a composer, Andy has worked in a variety of formats, from orchestral and large ensemble commissions, classical and jazz chamber music projects, to numerous film, television, radio, and podcast productions. Andy has appeared at such wide-ranging venues as Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks, Coachella, The Kennedy Center, Newport Folk Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Pitchfork Music Festival, Radio City Music Hall, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.
EVAN HARRIS (REEDS)
Evan Harris is a New York-based saxophonist and composer whose passion for jazz has informed his “vividly evocative” (Words About Music) sound on the saxophone. Evan leads his own ensemble, the Evan Harris Quintet, which performs his original compositions, drawing inspiration from the panoramas and cityscapes that have shaped his recent past. The Evan Harris Quintet has appeared in New York City, as a headline act at the 2019 DC Jazz Festival, and across Australia for a national album launch tour, presenting Evan’s debut album Skylines. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Evan has established himself with performance credits ranging from Miguel Zenon’s Identities are Changeable to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet. At the formative age of 26, Evan has been acknowledged with a number of accolades, including the title of 2018 Young Australian Jazz Musician of the Year. Having graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Music, Evan was awarded the University Medal, a credit recognizing the most distinguished graduate. He subsequently completed a Master of Music (Jazz Studies) degree at The Juilliard School in 2018.

Mathis has had the honor of working with artists such as Ron Carter, Lillias White, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Lee Ritenour, Daniel J. Watts, DJ Kindness, Braxton Cook, Veronica Swift, Etienne Charles, and more.
BARRY STEPHENSON (BASS)
New York City-based acoustic/electric bassist and composer Barry Stephenson has been acclaimed as “one of the most sought-after bassists on the scene today.” Released in 2020, Barry’s The Iconoclast was nominated for the NAACP Image Award® for Outstanding Jazz Album (Instrumental), and was notably the only independentlyproduced album in a category that included work by Jon Batiste, George Burton, Christian Sands, and Immanuel Wilkins. Barry has performed and toured extensively with TV personality, musician, and bandleader Jon Batiste and Stay Human, including regular appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and performances at a variety of festivals, including the Monterey, Montreaux, Montreal, Newport, North Sea, Umbria, and Playboy Jazz festivals. He has also performed at rock festivals including Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. Barry has been featured on recent episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Godfather of Harlem. Barry has performed with many internationally-recognized jazz, blues, and soul artists, including Nicholas Payton, David Sanborn, Seal, the late Freddie Cole, Diane Schuur, the late Henry Butler, Mark Whitfield, Cyrille Aimee, Etienne Charles, and Theo Croker.

Endowed Sponsorship Program
The Endowed Sponsorship Program provides individuals and families with the opportunity to support Jorgensen by sponsoring any concert or other program. Benefits to Endowed Sponsors will include name recognition in the Jorgensen playbill, additional recognition in the community through press releases provided by the University, and an opportunity to visit with the guest artist.
Sponsorship could be a means of celebrating a special holiday or anniversary, or of dedicating an event to a loved one. Most importantly, by contributing to the cost of current programs, sponsors would help ensure that the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts will continue to present wonderful music and other programs in the future. Your gift would benefit not only Jorgensen, but also the community at large.
Patrons interested in sponsoring an event should contact Rodney Rock at 860-486-1983 or rodney.rock@uconn.edu for further information.
