The tourbillon is one of the most complicated components known to watchmaking, and for a time, after the surge of wristwatches, in opposition to pocket watches, the tourbillon was deemed as an utterly beautiful but absolutely useless complication. However, when watchmakers started to use it again in chronometer pieces, the perception of the Tourbillon changed. Now Andreas Strehler is using the in-house technology of the Remontoir d’égalité with the tourbillon to perfect balance, and thus precision.

En 1999, finalmente lanzó el primer modelo del Tourbillon Souverain, el único tourbillon con remontoire en esa época. Ahora, el Tourbillon Souverain Regence Circulaire funciona con el mecanismo más preciso en el mercado relojero. Now, the Tourbillon Souverain Regence Circulaire is powered by the most accurate mechanism in the horological market. The caliber 1403, housed in a 40 mm case, is manually wound, made with 18K rose Gold and 26 jewels with a frequency of 21’600 VPH 3 Hz and a power reserve of 42 ± 2 hours. The white gold dial pays tribute to 18th-century watchmaking with geometrical motifs of the Regency period—engravings handmade by a Genevan artisan. The watch is limited to 20 pieces.

La presencia humana en Botsuana y la región del sur de África se remonta a dos millones y medio de años. Se han encontrado herramientas, armas y joyas antiguas esparcidas por todo el territorio que datan de la Edad de Piedra. Hace 30,000 años, los habitantes locales –que se cree era el pueblo San– no dejaron rastros de su forma de vida más que pinturas rupestres en las colinas de Tsodilo, que representan la caza y la fauna. A Rough Diamond Human presence can be traced back two and a half million years in Botswana and the African southern region. Ancient tools, weapons and jewelry are scattered across the territory from the Stone Age. 30,000 years ago, local dwellers—believed to be the San people—didn’t leave trace of their way of life other than cave paintings in the Tsodilo Hills, which depict hunting and fauna. The Bantu eventually overcame them with technological advances and an organized way of life. They were skilled farmers, potters and smiths. Through the millennia, many groups from the surrounding territories settled in Botswana, and though it isn’t clear when the Tswana people migrated, there are traces of their presence as early as the 14th century.

In the 18th century, Botswana’s communities were divided in chiefdoms, which had managed to coexist mostly in peace. It was at this time when European Christian missionaries arrived to spread the Gospel and forever changed the way of life in Botswana. Despite the controversy regarding their intervention, they are credited with promoting education, as well as introducing advanced medicine and modern economic strategies. Tribal chiefs, called Dikgosi, received them mostly well. Christianity wasn’t as successful in other regions of Africa, but to this day, nearly 80% of the Batswana (as the people of Botswana are called) is Christian.

In the late 18th century, England implemented the protectorate of Bechuanaland in response to Germany’s invasion of Namibia and due to internal conflicts that had recently aroused between tribes. The protectorate lasted until September 30, 1966, when Botswana became independent. It was a year later that a diamond mine was discovered in Orapa, a remote area a few hundred miles north of Gaborone. Diamonds had already been discovered around a century earlier, but not at such large scale. The diamond business, along with tourism, has been the top contributor for the nation’s economic growth in the last few decades.

The plains are scorching hot during the day and freezing cold during the night, consequence of the semi-arid Kalahari Desert, which spans 900,000 sq km and most of Botswana. Okavango Delta was once part of an ancient lake called Makgadikgadi, and is now a combination between marshlands and flooded plains. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, Okavango is an ecosystem that spans approximately 15,000 sq km and is considered the maximum expression of natural beauty and wonder in Botswana due to the high concentration of animals and plants in the region. Around 40% of the area is protected by the Moremi Game Reserve, and the rest by 18 Wildlife Management Areas and Controlled Hunting Areas because of its importance for wildlife preservation; Botswana harbors the largest elephant and lion populations in the world, as well as many endangered species that rely on the delta for survival. Therefore, tours and tourists are carefully limited and monitored to maintain control of human intervention on the environment and keep it to a minimum.

What we find in Okavango, besides a heaven on earth, is the definition of life—hippos soak in the ponds that they share with the crocodiles, trying to escape the sweltering heat; among the thorny shrubs, in the grasslands, you will find the rhinos and the lions looking for shade, the latter patiently waiting for the right time to hunt for prey. Elephants wander in groups, looking for the next best spot for a mud bath, fiercely protecting their calves from potential predators. Antelopes graze and remain wary of any sudden movements; cheetahs climb on the highest branches for a better view of the plains, while giraffes and zebras gallop against the sunset.

Kalahari is derived from the word kgala, which means “the great thirst” in Tswana. It covers most of Botswana and part of Namibia. During rainy season it grows enough vegetation to feed wildlife; it also serves as a drainage system for nearby bodies of water. During dry season, the heat and dryness is extreme. The desert houses the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the second largest game reserve in the world. It was closed for 30 years until the late 90s; ever since, tourism is limited and controlled, but allowed. One of the most popular areas is Deception Valley due to the concentration of animals and vegetation.

rystalline waters, a neverending horizon, and spectacular sunsets”—this description can easily refer to thousands of places in the world, but in this case, the Seychelles Islands are the subject of this portrayal. But, how can this archipelago in the Indian Ocean be any different from other places with the same characteristics? The answer isn’t complicated if we genuinely look back to their history, geography, and culture. These islands were uninhabited throughout most of their recorded history. The first data of human occupation reported that, in the 16th century, sailors from different parts of the world used to cruise through the islands. Nowadays, the archipelago’s 115 islands host thousands of tourists every year. Their natural beauty and friendly residents make this paradise a hotspot for sailing and aquatic activities. The islands are divided in two: the Inner Island Group and the Outer Island Group. Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue islands stand proud as the center of this natural paradise at just about 420 kilometers (260 miles) from continental Africa. The English empire arrived to these virgin islands in the fourth voyage of the British East India Company. The islands then became a common passing point for pirates that traveled from Asia to Africa and vice-versa, until 1756, when the first Stone of Possession was laid in Mahé Island by the French. The name Seychelles was chosen in honor of Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Louis XV's Minister of Finance. In 1810, Britain took sole control over the islands, and they became a Crown Colony. They stayed under the rule of the British Empire until 1976 when they became independent and took the name of Republic of Seychelles.

The islands enjoy a very warm climate, classified as tropical rainforest. The capital, Victoria, is situated in the Mahé Island, the largest one. The main three islands are 1100 kilometers (700 miles) northeast from Madagascar, and 1600 kilometers (1000 miles) east of Kenya. Since the dawn of time, these islands were the home of thousands of species. By the end of the 1700s, the human population started to explore and settle here, causing the extinction of hundreds of unique creatures due to recreational hunting and deforestation, causing the loss of their natural habitat. Despite these unfortunate events, the islands still house hundreds of species. In recent years, two leading organizations were created to encourage and safeguard the most endangered wildlife. Birdlife International and the Island Conservation Society play a fundamental role in the conservation of the biodiversity of the island.

Since these islands were inhabited until the mid18th century, their culture is a mix of French and British tradition. Through most of the inhabited parts of the islands, we can see the French influence in their architecture and cuisine. The official languages are Creole, French, and English. Their music and dance are profoundly influenced by African culture, and their native cuisine has many traces of Asian heritage. French colonists and black slaves were the first to arrive, along with French deportees in the 19th century. Later on, Asians from India, Malaysia, and China arrived to the islands, creating a riveting and diverse culture.

An Undiscovered World of Experiences In 1971 the Seychelles International Airport was created with one purpose in mind: to attract tourists. Tourism has become the islands’ primary economy. Multiple incentives were given to real estate projects to increase the growth of this industry, but because the islands depend solely on tourism, in recent years, the government decided to promote the development of small-scale manufacturing, fishing, and farming. Anse Intendance is one of Mahé's most beautiful beaches. This small and secluded crescent of sand on the island's south coast is a favorite surfing spot thanks to its frequent big swells. The lack of a protective reef makes swimming a little rough when trade winds blow from the southeast, but sunbathers, beachcombers, and photographers will enjoy this picturesque, palm-framed strand at any time of year. Additionally, turtles nest along the white shores. Likewise, on Praslin Island’s north shore, Anse Lazio (Chevalier Bay) is one of the island's most picturesque beaches. You have to hike over a hill to access the beach, but it's worth the effort. Flanked by rounded granite boulders, this long stretch of soft white sand merges with crystal clear waters in dreamy shades of blue.

For a closer encounter with nature, the largest national park in the Seychelles, Morne Seychellois National Park—spanning more than 20 percent of the area of Mahé—is a haven for nature lovers and hikers. Within its lush borders lies the mountain range named after its highest point: Morne Seychellois, which reaches a height of 905 meters and overlooks the capital of Victoria. Hiking trails ascend into the park from the village of Danzil, passing tea plantations and offering spectacular views of the southwest coast of Mahé. The moderate Morne Blanc hike is one of the most popular trails and offers magnificent views from its summit. Walking west through the park, hikers will reach the Baie Ternay and Port Launay Marine Parks. To the northwest lies the hamlet of Bel Ombre and the isolated beach at Anse Major. Another natural beauty is the Vallée de Mai National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the island of Praslin; it preserves a prehistoric forest that houses at least 4,000 specimens of the rare giant coco de mer fruit palm (unique to the Seychelles). Other plants here include vanilla orchids, palmiste, latanier, traveler's palm, and Chinese fans. Nature lovers, birders, and photographers will enjoy exploring this reserve, where the trees form an overhead canopy, and large prehistoric boulders are strewn across the forest floor. The valley is home to many species of lizards and rare birds such as the Seychelles bulbul; fruit pigeon; and the national bird of the Seychelles, the black parrot. Hiring a guide is highly recommended, so you can learn interesting details about the plants and animals.

The Sainte Anne National Marine Park—encompassing six islands—is only a 15-to-20 minute boat ride off the coast of Mahé near Victoria. It became the first national park in the Indian Ocean in 1973. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom boat excursions reveal the rich diversity of marine life in the park's coral reefs, and you can explore most of the islands within the reserve through available tours from Mahé. Another highlight is Bird Island, over a 100 km north of Mahé; it was once known as Îles aux Vaches due to the dugongs (sea cows) in the area. Here, you’ll find a population of migratory sooty terns, which reaches 1,500,000 birds during the May to October breeding season. When contemplating his work, his passion for art is tangible. His dishes are more than a sum of ingredients to please the palate; they’re a display of masterful arrangement and creativity. His menu is a harmonious combination of African tradition, French technique and Mediterranean fresh produce from the local markets. Late last year, due to the restaurant’s demand, the chef opened MARIA, a private dinning space located just across the street from JAN with only one table for a bespoke meal for a group between eight and 18 people. The whitethemed space was named after the chef´s mother and grandmother, who taught him what he calls “South-African hospitality”, a philosophy deeply ingrained in both JAN and MARIA.

Now, after winning over the hearts of his guests and the French selective palates (plus a Michelin star), he still has a lot to offer, with a bright personality, innovative artistic expression and honest cuisine.

utting edge design, excellent performance and top comfort for on board living describe the new Pershing model, a brand of the Ferretti Group. The fully customized 82-footer was created in collaboration between yacht designer Fulvio De Simoni and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department to enhance the experience of yachting. The vessel boasts aggressive exterior lines that allow larger internal volumes. The design was conceived for better performance and functionality and less fuel consumption. From the outside, the standout feature is the sundeck, with an optional retractable helm station, which can be reached by means of an innovative carbon steel staircase, created from the collaboration with Besenzoni. Here we find sunbathing areas and comfortable chaise lounges. For safety, there are two lateral handles and a pulpit which blend in completely with the aesthetics of the superstructure.

On the main deck, the cockpit and the saloon provide wide spaces divided by a retractable door which is electro-hydraulically controlled, to offer maximum comfort. The sofa can be electrically transformed into a sunbathing area, a mobile bar with BBQ and a fiberglass table. The furnishing includes brands like Poltrona Frau, designer of the dashboard, the seats and the chairs, lamps by Cassina, carpets by B.I.C and a folding table with a metal base and a crystal top by Naos. Owners can choose between two layouts. The first includes four guest cabins: the master suite with ensuite bathroom, a VIP cabin, which features an elegant central bed and two big lateral wardrobes, and two cabins with twin beds; the second has three guest cabins with a lounge cinema room. And though technological advances are crucial for functionality, designers and urban planners are prioritizing the aesthetic element to build, at the same time, a new face for a city—buildings are meant to look beautiful, appealing and extravagantly ready for the future. Christian De Portzamparc is one such designer. Of Moroccan origin, he is one of the most prominent French architects with renowned ambitious projects all over the world. He graduated from the Paris School of Fine Arts in 1969, and founded his Atelier a decade later, where he has worked to device new techniques through years of research and analysis, which allows him to build quality living spaces. In 1994, he became the first French architect to obtain the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize.

The structure features wine cellars, a cuvier with 52 vats, offices, a tasting, workshops and more. The project aims to unify exterior with interior, to facilitate natural light and ventilation and thus optimize the iconic French wine-making processes.

Its flowing lines symbolize the elegance of haute couture pieces.

his building is part of the Wujiang Lakefront Masterplan, a series of projects commissioned by the city of Suzhou that covers over 100,000 sq.m. The complex is comprised of an exhibition center, an opera house, a museum, a conference center, restaurants, cinemas and more. Its dual shape alludes to the Chinese philosophy of the Yin and the Yang with a curved design of metallic strips that reflect the water that surrounds the structure. This is one of Portzamparc’s ongoing projects and it will be completed in 2019.

Rhino horns, elephants’ ivory tusks, plus cats’ pelts and organs are in high demand in the Eastern Asian black market; this has encouraged poachers to break into protected areas to hunt hundreds of specimens per year. Fortunately, countless organizations are doing what they can to help, setting up funds and raising awareness of the importance of wildlife welfare.

Botswana banned commercial hunting in 2014, and many anti-poaching units, trained for combat and committed to wildlife protection, patrol the savanna. However these units have found themselves at the center of controversy and heated disputes between Botswana and Namibia, particularly, due to the violence and casualties that have resulted from the encounters between Namibian poachers and Botswana units. Recently the government disarmed the units to avoid future conflict. Illegal hunting is still an epidemic, and there is still a lot to be done. Very recently, nearly 90 elephants were killed for their tusks near the protected area of the Okavango. Before, Botswana boasted a record of minimal elephant deaths that didn’t reach 40 specimens a year. This incident proves that illegal wildlife trade is a growing problem, especially because Botswana has the largest concentration of elephants in the world, with 160,000 individuals. Organizations like Elephants Without Borders (EWB) are dedicated to the research and protection of the species. Meanwhile, rhinos have fought and barely survived their own battles. In the last century the numbers in rhino populations have decreased dramatically, and black rhinos were actually declared extinct in Botswana by the early 90s. Both white and black rhinos have been reintroduced to the Okavango region, and are thriving despite their reduced numbers. But rhino horns are highly coveted because they are believed to contain powerful curative properties against life-threatening diseases like cancer, and they are still hunted periodically. Laws in Botswana state that a poacher, if caught, could serve up to 15 years in prison and pay a 100,000 pula fine. One of the reasons why Botswana has been successful against poaching is because it has zero tolerance against aggressors. Late last month, the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, travelled to Botswana to assist the Annual General Meeting for Rhino Conservation Botswana in Maun to support the organization’s charity as patron. In 2016, before he was appointed patron for the organization, he traveled to Botswana to help Map Ives, former Wilderness Safaris Botswana Environmental Director, on an operation to fit electronic tracking devices to black rhinos, listed as critically endangered.

But animals that live freely in the African savanna have other factors to worry about, which constantly threaten their survival. Climate change causes more damage in the ecosystem each year. Droughts last longer, the Okavango Delta dries faster, which results in water shortage for both wildlife and human population, and when it does rain, storms and winds are increasingly destructive. With the landscape suffering climate transformation, agriculture struggles, and poverty has been denominated the greatest fuel for illegal trade. That’s why the government has worked to create sustainable solutions and efforts against poverty, better infrastructure, responsible farming and eco-tourism. Human intervention is also an issue. Overgrazing is a growing problem, and many lions and leopard have been poisoned by farmers to protect their cattle. This is why it’s important to spread knowledge about these species among the people and thus create a communal effort to help the ecosystem recover for the sake of an entire country’s inhabitants.

No obstante, ¿qué sucede cuando la historia de un país se sale de la norma y no queda completamente registrado por el medio escrito sino por las obras que sus habitantes han dejado a lo largo de los siglos? The word setswana (language of the tswana) is usually used to designate the most spoken language in this country. However, it’s also used to name Botswana’s vast cultural wealth, including its music, literature and the arts. In particular, it’s through the latter that the Botswana have turned their culture into a language to express both the history of their people and the natural wonders that surround them. A clear example of this aesthetic fusion between nature, art and history is found in one of the most beautiful Patrimonies of Humanity in this country: Tsodilo. In this region, not only do the Kalahari desert collide with the Okavango Delta, it’s also where one of the oldest records of the San is located, one of Botswana’s first settlers, as well as one of the country’s first artists. In Tsodilo there are more than 4,000 cave paintings of high spiritual value that date back 24,000 years and portray images of nature including animals that served as symbols of their understanding of the earthly and spiritual world. However, archaeologists and art historians from all around the globe continue to unveil the mysteries of this region because the artistic style of the San found in these paintings still lingers in their contemporary art.

Las obras de arte San, si bien no son las únicas de Botsuana, son una ventana a milenios de cultura y a su estilo de vida. Actualmente, los mejores ejemplos de arte San son las canastas hechas a mano por mujeres de distintas tribus. La particularidad que hace estas canastas únicas es que cada una posee motivos artísticos inspirados en elementos de la naturaleza, por ejemplo la piel de las serpientes, el crecimiento de una flor o incluso el vuelo de las aves. Además, no sólo las obras San son estéticas sino también son altamente prácticas, pues una característica que hace que gente de todo el mundo compre estas canastas es que están realizadas a base de una técnica de trenzado que las hace altamente resistentes e impide que su contenido se salga, pues originalmente eran utilizadas para llevar granos. Si bien estas no son las únicas obras de arte San, es por medio de este estilo de arte altamente simbólico que podemos comprender el estrecho vínculo entre los grupos que han habitado este país y su entorno. Por supuesto, los San no son el único grupo que enriquece el legado artístico de Botsuana, pero vale la pena destacar su arte porque es un ejemplo vivo de lo que tswana significa: un lenguaje que transmite el espíritu de toda una cultura a lo largo de milenios de historia.
San artworks, while not the only ones in Botswana, are a window into millennia of culture and way of life. Currently, the best examples of San art are handmade baskets hand-woven by women from different tribes. The particularity that makes these baskets unique is that each one displays artistic motives inspired by elements of nature, for example the skin of snakes, the growth of a flower or even the flight of birds. In addition, not only San art is aesthetic but also highly practical; a feature that makes people around the world buy these baskets is that they are made with a braiding technique that makes them highly resistant and prevents their contents to fall out—originally, they were used to carry grains. While these aren’t the only San works of art, it’s through this highly symbolic art style that we can understand the close link between the groups that have inhabited this country and its surroundings. Of course, the San are not the only group that enriches the artistic legacy of Botswana, but it’s worth highlighting their art because it’s a living example of what Tswana means: a language that conveys the spirit of an entire culture throughout millennia of history.

ste nuevo proyecto a la costa este de Mahé, la isla principal del archipiélago de las Seychelles, es un hotspot de superyates de lujo para navegantes y viajeros de todo el mundo. La marina está ubicada a solo unos minutos del aeropuerto –una ventaja para un país que depende en gran medida del turismo. La marina forma parte del proyecto residencial Eden Islands e incluye apartamentos frente al mar, maisons de dos pisos y magníficas villas, así como centros comerciales y otros establecimientos como restaurantes, una casa club, gimnasio y mucho más. Eden Island Marina tiene capacidad de atraque para acomodar superyates de más de 100 metros de eslora y embarcaciones más pequeñas. This new project off the east coast of Mahè, Seychelles Archipelago’s main island, is a luxury superyacht hotspot for navigators and travelers from around the world. The marina is located only a few minutes from the airport—highly advantageous for a country that relies heavily on tourism. The marina is part of Eden Islands residential project and includes waterfront apartments, double-story maisons and magnificent villas, as well as shopping centers and other facilities like restaurants, a clubhouse, gym and much more. Eden Island Marina has berth capacity to accommodate superyachts over 100 meters long and smaller vessels.
