ABSTRACT Violence against women, gender violence is, far from disappearing, an unstoppable booming phenomenon. Although the information is still limited and fragmentary, the numbers are grossly inadequate and not comparable. The magnitude of it is staggering. Honor killings; female genital mutilation; rape as a weapon of war; human trafficking for sexual exploitation; the marriage of girls; what some authors have called ginocide referring to the selective abortion of girls or infanticide of babies born in some countries in Asia are just some of the examples of what occurs. Worldwide, there are between 113 and 200 million women missing demographically. Every year, between 1.5 and 3 million women and girls die as result of violence or abandonment due to their sex. As The Economist published years ago, every period of two to four years, the world looks away from a victim count comparable to Hitler’s Holocaust. If we focused on the statistics of their life details and circumstances of death rather than numbers of people the story would be unbearable. In an increasing complex and globalized world a new misogyny runs producing real horrors. As Genevieve Fraisse says, “any period of political upheaval back to question of the relationship between the sexes through the reformulation of social ties as a whole”.
