C

OVID 19 has changed our lives: in March 2020, we were sent away from campus, our classes shifted to an online platform and all face to face events were cancelled or postponed. We said virtual goodbyes and transitioned into a world of closed borders, shopping queues, empty shelves, and panic buying. The real world looked nothing like the one we had expected.

As of March 31, 2020, the time I write this, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide has surpassed 850,000, while the death toll exceeds 40,000. In response to the pandemic, most governments and businesses have implemented contingency plans and announced additional actions and measures to respond to the global spread of this virus. Unfortunately, many governments have failed to respond effectively. Many leaders have ignored scientific advice and lacked the courage to take bold measures while there was yet time. One of the most important lessons learned from the responses to this pandemic was the lack of preparation and proper planning. According to the United States’ Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), more than 60 percent of Americans are neither prepared for, nor practice for, disasters or emergencies of any kind, whether natural or manmade. Tragicomically, people spend more time planning a trip than identifying the outcomes they want to see in the major areas of their lives.

We often say that life is a journey. A good journey begins with knowing where we are and being willing to go somewhere else. I am sure that you are very familiar with the planning concept from marketing courses you’ve taken.

I believe that having a good plan and preparing for the wide variety of experiences and challenges that await you is the first step to building and enjoying a successful career.

There are several reasons why I believe that having a plan for your life is important: 1) It will help you set your goals and clarify which priorities are more important than others. Until now, your parents or professors have set most priorities for you. However, what about you? 2) It will help you maintain your work-life balance. You don’t need to sacrifice your health or career for your children and relationships or the converse. If you have a good plan, it results in the optimal allocation of resources and, thus, you have a higher probability of maintaining a good balance in your career and life; 3) It will enable you to assess and identify your actual realities. If you don’t know who you are, where you are, and what you have (strengths and weaknesses), it is difficult to decide where you are going, and 4) It will serve as a road map to show you the way to accomplish what matters to you most. An action plan can be more effective, as it provides a way to measure progress toward your goals.

As you can tell, there are many amazing benefits of having a plan for your career, but these four are undoubtedly some good ones that I have learned from my own life experiences. Most of us know about the importance of having a plan; however, only a few create and execute one for their career and monitor its progress. As you begin your journey, the first thing you should do is build your own career plan. In doing so, you increase the odds of enjoying its success.

Q&A With

STU LANG

Of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics tu Lang is the man behind the single largest donation the University of Guelph has ever received. The $21 million dollar donation was given in honour of his father Gordon S Lang.

Gordon founded CCL Industries in Toronto in 1951. CCL is now the largest label maker in the world, bringing in billions of dollars of revenue. CCL Industries is not only a successful company but a company that embodies Guelph’s values such as sustainability, treating people with respect, and working to uplift communities. Stu is also involved with the school through the football program where he was head coach of the 2015 Yates Cup winning Gryphon team. He himself played in the CFL as a wide receiver where he won five Grey Cups in eight seasons.

We had the pleasure speaking to Stu Lang regarding his connections, football, and advice for students.

What special connection does the University of Guelph have with the Lang family?

Historically there is no connection whatsoever. I grew up in Toronto and all my schooling outside of going to Queen’s in Kingston was centered around Toronto. Then we moved to Puslinch in 1989. This was primarily because my wife Kim has ridden horses all through her life, and she would always say she would love to have horses on a farm that she owned. We decided to move to Puslinch as it was close to her trainer. My wife then joined the Pet Trust Board at OVC which oversees fundraising. I also had a chance to meet the Head Football Coach at Guelph and he hired me. That sort of started the connection to Guelph and our involvement. As we have lived in Guelph we have developed a love for the city, the university, and the students. It fit a lot of the characteristics my dad lived by creating a connection there.

What did you enjoy about being Head Coach of University of Guelph’s football team?

I played nine years at the highest level with the Edmonton Eskimo’s in the CFL but I also spent twenty-five years in business. What interested me in the job was that being the Head Coach meant I was as much of a football coach as I was also a General Manager.

This excited me to get into the football program and try and turn it around.

That involved more than just performing on the field, as I also was interacting with the alumni, the students, and the parents. We recruited students that would fit the character to the team, and I discovered the character of the team is very similar to the character of the general student. Humble, hardworking, very collaborative group who had a sense of pride in the University which led me to fall in love with it.

What is your father’s company and how did it evolve?

It started it 1951 by my Dad's (Gordon) grandfather and, funny enough, it was called Lang Lamps. The company made Lamps for major department stores like Eatons and Simpsons. They were at a trade show in the U.S. and my Dad noticed someone selling aerosols. They then bought the rights to manufacture aerosols in Canada. That became so successful they sold off the lamps and focused on aerosols.

Because they were dealing with major marketers like Proctor and Gamble and Unilever in the aerosols industry, they decided to try making additional products, like powders and liquids. They evolved into this custom contract manufacturer where they would go to big marketers and say “what you do well is market, what we do well is manufacture. So we will manufacture your products and we’ll ship it to your plants or your stores and you guys can sell them. Then dad realized that we were buying a lot of labels and said why don’t I buy a label company. It just evolved from one thing to the next. Now we have sold off the custom manufacturing side and invested heavily in labels.

When you worked at the company what was your position and what did you enjoy?

I started out in summers, typically as an owner's child would. You start out in the maintenance department and other low-end jobs. While working there I truly got a sense of the culture of the company. My dad really tried to run the business like a family. Whenever he was working, he would always wander around and talk with the workers about how they are and how their family is. I got a sense of how much the employees loved my father and respected him which was cool to see. Over time I moved up the ladder and ending up running some of our companies in Europe. I’ve since retired but I still am on the board of the directors.

What would your advice be to young business students starting their careers?

Jim Estill, the CEO of Danby Products, has an expression “fail often, fail fast, fail cheap”. I think there is a lot of truth to that. Some people when they graduate university are scared to make mistakes. You are still young and you will probably not be in the same job forever, unlike my generation. When you are young take risks, be bold, and don’t worry about failing. The other thing is always be learning. Just because you have graduated from University doesn't mean you put learning on hold. Read books, meet people, and travel, as things are happening faster than ever so you must be on top of your game to capitalize on opportunities.

What do you think is special of the Guelph’s city and campus community?

Guelph is a perfect size, it’s not too small and it’s not too big. It’s very family oriented and has very hard working humble people. I got to work with a woman named Jaya at the Hope House in Guelph. She is a saint with what she does with the homeless people at the Hope House. The mayor Cam Guthrie comes to the football games and you can have great conversations with him. There's an element of community and everyone seems to be a neighbour in Guelph. The character of the city and of the citizens is what I have come to fall in love with. I call it the hidden gem of Ontario.

Peru is one of the most beautiful countries in South America. I have always wanted to visit there since I was a kid. Many Chinese students may know Peru from a popular TV show called “Divas Hit the Road”, which promotes the country as a must-see place for tourists from all around the world. We planned for four full months before heading to Peru, partially due to the excitement but also the lack of availability to tour Machu Picchu. Since there is a high tourism demand, the government of Peru has to establish a regulation to restrict on the number of visitors to enter mountain area.

An amazing feature of Peru is Machu Picchu, a place I could compare to the Great Wall of China. People may know it by another name, “The Lost City of Incas.” The historical construction and the mysterious icon have both made this place even more mythical.

Before my travels, I had so many ideas of what it would be like to see. However, Machu Picchu is much more magnificent when seeing it in person than in the pictures. There is no proper way to describe this piece of paradise- maybe “speechless” is the word, but I will leave this for you to judge.

Based on my knowledge, there are three ways to get to Machu Picchu- by train, by bus, and by walking. We are very adventurous and decided to take on the long hike. I accomplished this milestone in my life by stepping into this challenging journey, which I never thought would happen before.

Tips for new hikers: - Lighten your backpack - Fill up your water bottle - Enjoy mother nature - Breathe deeply - Keep smiling at the camera and pretend you are a pro!

Student Guide:

Get Involved with Student Council Taking part in the Hospitality, Food, and Tourism Management Student Association (HFTMSA) is a fantastic way to get involved during your university career! It allows you to connect with industry professionals, gather communication and teamwork skills, and make many friends in the hospitality community!

To initiate involvement, students can become a Year Representative for their program year. Representatives attend, organize, and host events on behalf of HFTMSA such as the Halloween pumpkin sale, painting the cannon (a Guelph tradition!), and in class announcements.

After completing a year as a Representative, students can apply to a collection of Executive Positions. The large variety of positions allows students to discover diverse paths within the industry. After holding a Representative and an Executive Position, students can apply to become President or Vice-President of Student Council.

Q&A WITH Keith Henry

President and CEO of Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada We are pleased to welcome the President and CEO of Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada, Keith Henry. Keith is passionate about developing Canada’s Indigenous tourism strategy, focusing on increasing the market’s readiness, jobs, and revenue. Keith is a Métis and volunteers his time with many organizations including the BC Métis Federation, World Indigenous Tourism Alliance, and the International Marketing Committee Destination Canada.

This is an intriguing new aspect of the tourism industry in Canada and we asked him some questions to learn more.

What were you doing at the University of Guelph today?

Today I shared a story on how Indigenous tourism is growing in Canada. I talked about some of the industry challenges we have, and I think it was an opportunity for me to inspire people to learn about Indigenous experiences we have in this country.

How does your organization help support tourism in Indigenous communities?

First off, we create awareness in the communities about the industry and how it works. There is a significant lack of awareness across First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities across the country.

We do workshops in the communities and have created a national manual that is handed out across the country to help people learn. Once the businesses are up and running, we make sure the 1900 businesses across the county are economically sustainable. We know the demand is there but there is a continued challenge on marketing those businesses and making sure customers know where to purchase authentic Indigenous experiences.

How have members of the Indigenous community embraced this new tourism industry?

It has taken a modest persuasion. The local Indigenous business leaders have been getting a lot more support. We’ve helped a lot as far as creating marketing content with videos and we have gotten a great response from the local communities from these videos. The community has been very receptive of Canadian and international visitors and we see a bright future as communities become more aware of the benefits of the tourism industry.

What international markets have shown interest in Canadian indigenous tourism?

The U.S. market has grown substantially, as well as Asian markets such as China and Japan. Those are our largest markets. The other great markets I showed today in the presentation are France and Germany. In Quebec half of our visitors are from France. They have a tremendous interest in the French Indigenous culture, and we expect that to rise in the future.

What are the types of careers available in this industry for students and professionals?

I think a lot of people underestimate the value of tourism can have on creating careers. We hear many people in our Indigenous communities that the jobs created by tourism are only part time, lower paying, or seasonal. We spend a lot of time explaining to people across the country that this industry has many full-time career opportunities whether it be professional marketers, accountants, or business planners.

As it stands today, we are already a very large employer. We have about 40,000 people working in Indigenous tourism and looking into the future we will need 10,000 more by 2024. We know there is not enough Indigenous people to fill those roles creating opportunities for great people such as new graduates from University of Guelph.

What do you think Canadians can get out of visiting and learning from these communities?

Our domestic market is equally if not more important for our industry. They are our top customer as 55% of our business is Canadians right now. What I don’t think Canadians have yet to fully realize is if they truly want to reconcile with these communities, they don’t have to do anything more than support the local businesses. People think of reconciliation in these big ceremonial ways.

All Canadians need to do is take small action and visit local Indigenous tourism businesses and learn together.

We really appreciate that Canadians are our most important customer and we are here to help more Canadians learn about this industry. ​

Who do you look towards to gain access to capital to finance these businesses?

We look for capital from a combination of providers such as Government, Banks, and Venture Capitalists. When we are dealing with export markets a lot of our businesses may not have the cash flow to manage expectations.

Dealing with big tour operators such as Jonview who give vouchers to travelers to be redeemed by our businesses and a lot of those vouchers are not redeemed for 30, 60, or 90 days. Our businesses simply cannot sustain themselves on these terms and often need access to working capital to pay wages and operate the business. We are working with partners in that space to help our businesses deal with that issue.

The other aspect is attracting investments for new developments. Banks are a bit of a challenge for us as there is not a lot of equity leverage in our businesses as most are run by entrepreneurs and in the beginning stages. We are working towards building our businesses to the point we can attract investors for faster growth in the industry. We are seeing some businesses get to that point and hope to see many more in the future.

What is your marketing strategy for the future?

We are coming out with a new platform called Destination Indigenous, it will be released in January 2020. It’s built off four key thing, direct consumer campaigning, creating more content with the media, expanding on our national Indigenous showcase in Canada, and other market trade work in Germany, Japan, France and USA.

What Destination Indigenous is going to do is create a number of new micro sites relevant to the specific activities consumers are interested in such as fishing, culinary, or indigenous lodging. This will make us more sophisticated and let consumers find exactly what they are looking for. We know the interest is there, but we have to give the right information to the right market.

I am lucky enough to have skied all around the world so I thought I would share with you some amazing places you can take your next ski adventure to!

ONTARIO Top Locations: Blue Mountain, Mount St. Louis Moonstone, Horseshow Valley, Chicopee, Glen Eden

If you talk to a hardcore skier, they may tell you that the skiing in Ontario is not the best.

However, residents have the great ability to find local hills within 2 hours’ drive from the GTA! Featured ski hills in Ontario are mainly groomed rooms and are great for beginner to intermediate skiers and snow boarders. If you’re a terrain park rider, Ontario has some well know parks such as Mount St. Louis Moonstone and Blue Mountain, both of which are recognized as some of the best parks in all of Canada!

Due to most of the runs being short groomers, Ontario is also a great place to become a ski racer and has many private and public ski hills that have competitive racing programs. For those living in the Guelph area, Glen Eden is a great ski hill option that features a terrain park, 16 runs, and has affordable seasons passes.

Jack’s Top Choice: Blue Mountain

What I love about Blue Mountain is that it has something for everyone. It has beginner to expert terrain, a good terrain park, tree runs, as well as lodging and a village for some après ski. Blue Mountain is a place you can make a weekend out of, due to the large number of activities it offers outside of skiing.

North America

North America is home to some of the best skiing in the world. British Colombia, in Western Canada, holds the number one rated ski resort in the world, Whistler Blackcomb, which held the 2010 winter Olympic Games. With over 8,000 acers of skiable terrain on two mountains, along with a charming village, Whistler Blackcomb is truly a remarkable resort. Within the province of Alberta, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Sunshine Village trails offer skiers stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. If you head over to the United States you will find some more famously known hills such as Vail, Breckenridge, and Aspen, all within Colorado. All three of these locations are only about an hour apart, allowing visitors to try different hills and resorts during their stay.

For locations closer to the Guelph area, skiers can also find some great skiing in Vermont, New York, and Montreal. Holiday Valley, located in Ellicottville (NY), features a mountain coaster, 5 terrain parks, cross-country hills, 75 runs, and often has deals for Canadian visitors. Montreal is home to Mount Tremblant, which features a village, après ski, and terrain. North America truly holds the best skiing in the world in the eyes of many visitors.

The vast amount of resorts, terrain for every rider, fun villages and après ski, as well as activities for non skiers coming along for the ride, make north America the powerhouse of skiing that it is.

Jack’s Top Choice: Whistler Blackcomb and Holiday Valley Whistler Blackcomb is a stunning resort with long runs and great terrain parks- if you're in the area it’s a must-do! Close to home, Holiday Valley is a favorite of mine and is only a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Guelph! This location is great if you are looking to have a road trip with some friends.

Top Locations: Cortina D’ampezzo (Italy), Zermatt (Switzerland), St. Anton am Arlberg (Austria)

Europe is a must stop location for any ski fanatic. European skiing has something for everybody- long and wide groomed runs for skiers of all skill levels, and steep black diamond and back country runs for advanced skiers. After hitting the slopes, European skiers are known to continue the day by living by their famous slogan- “ski hard, party hard”. Europe’s skiing is paired with some of the best après skiing on the planet. With restaurants, bars, and clubs from the bottom to the top of the hill, it is hard to not live up to the ski hard, party hard lifestyle. Another great part about skiing outside of North America is the different culture and wide variety of food and lodging. As hospitality students, we often hear about Switzerland, Italy, and France being staples in the industry for setting trends and standards of quality and guest experience. It is amazing to ski while also experiencing new cultures and seeing the high standards of guest experience.

Due to the European mountain regions being located within many boarding countries, you can also experience cross boarding skiing. It is such a rare experience to wake up in Italy, take a lift, then ski down to Switzerland for lunch! Skiing in Europe brings new terrain and a different culture and lifestyle that nowhere else can provide. If you’re a ski fan, or even just a fan of amazing hospitality which I am sure many of you are, you must put some of these European ski towns on your bucket list!

Jack’s Top Choice: Cortina D’ampezzo Last winter I skied in Italy at a ski town and resort called Cortina D’ampezzo. The views, town, and wide vary of terrain made it an unforgettable trip. The après ski also lived up to the hype! We found that the actual skiing part maybe lasted 4 hours, and by lunch, everyone was heading in to start partying.

ASIA Top Locations: Hakuba Valley (Japan), Yongpyong Resort (South Korea), Daemyung Vivaldi Park (South Korea)

Asia holds many hidden gems for skiers to visit. Japan is well known for being drowned in powder all winter long- and if your skier, you know that is an amazing thing! This is caused by the large amount of freezing cold wind blowing east across Japan. The wind picks up moisture off the Sea of Japan, and then dumps the moisture all over the mountains (becoming a skier’s dream)!

Visitors can also visit South Korea, who is also well known for amazing snow. Many of the top ski resorts in South Korea are within the province of Gangwon. South Korea’s largest and most famous ski resort is Yongpyong Resort, which holds ski terrain for every ski level, and was the location of the alpine skiing event for the PyeongChang Winter Games in 2018! For amazing night skiing, visitors can head over to Daemyung Vivaldi Park. Due to a large village with array of activities, Daemyung Vivaldi Park is perfect for young adult skiers and any non-skiers that come along for the trip. Like Europe, Asia is home to exciting culture and food that makes the trip so much more than just skiing. Paired with amazing snow and something for everyone, Asia is a must stop location for your next ski trip!

Jack’s Top Choice: Hakuba Valley This past April I was lucky enough to catch the very end of the ski season in Japan making a stop in a location called Hakuba Valley for some spring skiing. I was blown away by some of the best views I have ever seen along with amazing dinning located right on the mountain. Though I didn’t get to experience the well-known powder dumbs, skiing in a tea shirt then stopping in for ramen was a once in a lifetime experience.

The Magnificent Man Behind the Stand Bogdan "Bob" Izdebski Interview

Bogdan “Bob” Izdebski is the owner of Bob’s Dogs, a small hot dog stand located on the University of Guelph’s campus. Whether it be the middle of winter or the sweltering hot summer, Guelph students and faculty can always rely on Bob to greet them with a warm smile and a delicious sausage, hot dog, or veggie dog. Born in Warsaw Poland, Bob had a successful career as a child actor appearing in over 15 films. He then moved to Canada at 28 and worked at a factory for a short while before setting up his business on campus 21 years ago. He is now an integral part of the campus community and has made lasting impacts on thousands of students lives with his kindness and charm.

Bob embodies the spirit of hospitality, and we can all learn a thing or two from his warm heart and positive attitude.

Why did you choose to set up your business on campus rather than downtown Guelph or elsewhere?

Students are the reason I’m here. I love students as they have open hearts and have welcomed me in greatly. It is a different world on campus, and I would love to stay here for as long as I can.

What do you enjoy about your work?

I love to provide the people who come to me with good quality food. I spend the money for good quality product, and it is worth it because it is supporting good people, and good people are enjoying it. I put all my heart inside these dogs and sausages, and I hope the people like it.

What is one thing that has stood out to you in your time at the University of Guelph?

One year long ago, I was running out of money. Foodservice tried to kick me out as I could not pay the rent. An Ecuadorian engineer student named Carlos Alberto Donoso wrote a letter to the school saying Bob is our guy and we need to keep him here. The school saw the letter and found a spot for me, where I am now. When I first come to my new shop, I saw thousands of people all screaming and chanting Bobs Dogs. I never expected something like that, it was a really nice surprise. I might not be able to make a living off my stand, but this part of my life will stick with me always.

What is it about students that makes you passionate about serving them?

I love to talk to them, and they love to talk to me, so it makes us connected. It makes me happy seeing their smiles and the positivity they bring.

Have you been able to reconnect with any students who have graduated?

The people I have connected with are from all over the world. Whenever they come to Guelph, they always come to visit me with their spouces and their kids. Now some of those kids are students at the school too! It is so nice to see them, and they always come to me and say my parents were here and knew you and it is great to see you are still here.

One of the best parts about being enrolled in the hospitality and tourism program is having a job fair filled with employers in the industry looking to hire students for summer and future employment opportunities on the spot! Though an amazing opportunity, for so many young students, walking into a job fair for the first time can be a very intimidating and nerve racking experience. Talking to several possible employers in a short time span is typically not within one's comfort zone! That’s why I thought it would be perfect to share some tips and tricks that I have picked up over the years of attending job expos that I believe can help you stand out from the crowd, be confident walking into the crowded room, and hopefully land an employment opportunity!

Do your research!

Before the expo you will be able to see what employers well be attending online. Go through the list and find some employers that you think you would like to work for. Once you find some interesting companies, do some research on each! This has two benefits. One, it shows the employer you care and they will be very impressed that you have taking time to get to know the company before hand. Another benefit of knowing about the employers before hand is that it gives you a game plan once you arrive. You can walk in with confidence and with a purpose! This will help eliminate some of the nerves as you know you are prepared to talk to some future employers!

Ask questions Asking questions to the employer helps get the conversation started. It shows that you want to get to know more about the company and in turn they will do the same for you. Come prepared with questions for companies you are interested in, asking about the companies future and how you would fit into this picture. You can also ask questions using the research you did on the company, such as about their history or about the interviewers experience working there.

Make Sure to Have y​our Updated Resume This tip​is crucial! As you are going to be talking with many employers, it is important that you have multiple copies of your updated resume to hand out.

The more the merrier- you never know how many people you will end up talking to! Make sure to bring an envelope or bag to keep them in, which will help make sure they stay nice and organized and don’t get crinkled up! Additionally, you can keep any employer business cards or hand outs organized.

Dre​ss​ to Impress Make su​re you are dress in your best business casual attire! This will help you stand out from others and show the employers that you care about being presentable in a work setting. Another bonus about dressing nicely Is that it will help you feel more confident. If you look good, you will feel good!

Don​’t be Shy ​Don’t be scared to approach the employers yourself.

They know that most students are likely nervous, so walking up and talking to them confidently will make you stand out. After talking to a few employers the process will become much easier, so just push through the first few!

Foll​ow up ​This is something that not a lot of people do. If you gave an employer a resume and received a business card or contact information in return, don’t be scared to send a follow up email with your name and a short description about the conversation you had.

As the employers have likely talked to many students that day, sending a email at the end helps keep you fresh in their mind! Their reply will also likely set you up with a interview if you showed interest in employment with your follow up email!

Now you are ready to go! If you walk in with a plan, dressed your best, and act as confident as you can, it is very likely you will land a job! Another bonus tip is to attend the preparation events held be the hospitality student association before the expo.

These events will help you build your best resume and give you some crucial tips on networking and communication. Using these resources to your advantage will give you the upper hand in landing a job once the expo comes around!

6 Travelling Tips on a Budget 1.

One of the cheapest options for accommodations is staying in hostels. Hostels, where you share space with other travellers for half the price of a hotel. Especially as a student, it is a great option if you want to meet other travellers.

Hostelworld.com is a great website that you can search and find numerous different hostels around the globe.

When packing to stay in a hostel make sure to bring a lock, as many hostels supply lockers for storage.

When bathing, don’t forget to bring your own towel, as renting one can be expensive; along with your own pair of shower shoes. Make sure to make use of the hostels free amenities- many of them offer free activities like walking tours and entertainment.

Though bringing your whole wardrobe and shoe collection on vacation is appealing, try to pack lightly. It will not only cut down on costs by avoiding checked baggage for transportation, but it will make it much easier to travel from place to place. A great packing tip is to roll all your clothing instead of folding, giving you more room for other necessities.

When planning your vacation, use a private web browser.

Nowadays, websites use cookies to track your search’s and tend to increase the pricing when you search it again the next time.

Just myself. The meaning of travel is to discover the world, jump out of your original life style, and briefly integrate into local life.

Rather than visiting a specific attraction or with a specific person. Traveling on your own is more flexible and you can relax yourself more.

First, I got to know the city of Taipei. Taipei itself is not a huge city. However, it forms a city cluster with surrounding New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, and Keelung City. I first determined the routes for the four-day journey, and then I looked for places where these routes shared, and finally found the answer-MRT Taipei Station.

- Since Toronto takes nearly twenty hours to travel to Taipei, be sure to book a hotel for a layover in advance. The specific location depends on the landing time. You can buy a MRT card from the airport and take the subway directly to Taipei.

Why? I have always wanted to go to Taipei but had no chance to when I was younger. Taiwan's idol dramas were shown on TV. Since then, I have dreamt of traveling to Taiwan. I am fascinated when friends around me share their experiences with me once they return from Taiwan.

As an HFTM student, I recognized that the most important thing is accommodation. After comparing the local hotel with Airbnb, we have comprehensively considered the room rate, geographical location, and user evaluation.

Eventually I contacted an Airbnb near Simontine in advance.

Taipei has a well-developed transportation system and applies for an MRT card at the airport.

This card can be used on various public transportation. Whether it is subway, train, bus, taxi, one card can solve all the troubles, and the price is very friendly.

- Taipei has a lot of very delicious snacks by the roadside, especially in the night markets.

- Due to the large number of tourists, you will want to book Taipei 101 Tower or show tickets at least 10 days in advance to ensure a good seat.

- The duty-free shop at Taoyuan Airport is also worth visiting. Tourists can choose to go to the airport early to purchase goods, to bring back as souvenirs.

My roommate and I planned to visit Seattle by using our two days off of working at Delta Hotels by Marriott Whistler Village Suites. ​Transportation?

We rented a Mustang convertible sports car for $150 a day. We started our travels in the small town of Whistler which only had one rental company. They were running out of cars, so they had to give us this car with a cheaper price. Not too bad!

Hotel? ​ e used our employee discount to book the W Delta Hotels by Marriott Seattle Everett, which was around 30 to 60 minutes from Downtown Seattle. ​Places to Visit?

If you find yourself visiting this great city, make sure to visit these notable locations: Space Needle, Pike Place Market, Chihuly Garden and Glass, Kerry Park, Museum of Pop Culture, Seattle Aquarium, and University of Washington.

​ hether you’re in your W first or your fourth year of university, these tips will be helpful when navigating your way through postsecondary education!

Feeling Anxious?

Attending university is an experience that demands a lot of adaptation. For most young adults, this is their first time living away from home and taking on freedoms and responsibilities without their parents’ input or guidance. With this new independence come stresses, and it’s important to ensure that you stick to the basics of personal health and well-being to maintain your physical and mental wellness: follow a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and getting up at consistent times and aim for seven to eight hours of sleep nightly; eat healthful and nutritious meals, with lots of protein, fruits and vegetables to maintain optimal health; stay fit and active by exercising regularly, by enrolling in fitness classes, such as spin, boxing, Zumba, yoga or dance, at the university’s athletic centre; and practise basic hygiene such as regular showering and bathing.

During high-stress periods such as mid-terms and exams, however, it’s easy to overlook or skip these practices just when you need them most. If you’re feeling anxious, other coping strategies can also help. One approach is to take a short break and go for a walk in the fresh air to clear your mind. The arboretum, located right beside the university campus, is a beautiful place to wander on the trails, surrounded by picturesque ponds and beautiful fountains. Studies have shown that walking among nature produces endorphins and strengthens the immune system.

Another coping option would be to take a study break and release your creativity by drawing or colouring in a colouring book. This meditative activity will be a valuable distraction from the intensity of studying, writing and memorizing for exams or assignments. And if you find that you need professional help to cope with some of the stresses of university life, you can also turn to on-campus resources such as counselling. It’s important to recognize that you’re not alone in experiencing these feelings and to seek help when needed.

Overwhelmed with School Work?

It’s easy to become overwhelmed with course deadlines and tests for all your subjects and to feel as though everything seems to be due at the same time. An effective approach to combat this feeling is to write down all your course deadlines on a spreadsheet or calendar during the first week of the semester. This way you can be proactive and plan your time accordingly, so that you are prepared when you may have multiple assignments due the same week. Similarly, try not to procrastinate. It’s very easy to get distracted by friends or watching “just one more” episode on Netflix, however, it’s important to stay on task so that you’re not cramming in all your studying at the last minute. During your study periods, commit to focusing for one straight hour and then allowing yourself a 10-minute break. This way you will stay on task and be more productive in shorter increments.

If you are confused about an assignment or exam contents, don’t be afraid to ask your professor for help. Your professors and teacher assistants offer office hours for a reason—they’re there to help. Although it may be intimidating to approach them, it’s important to seek guidance that will lead you to success. It’s also helpful that your professor knows you personally and can put a face to your name, so even if you may not need help, go and introduce yourself anyway.

If you spend all your time at the library, take a study break and visit one of the many restaurants there are on campus. The University of Guelph is known for its outstanding food and student-run restaurants, such as PJ’s Restaurant, located in MacDonald Stewart Hall and operated by hospitality students, are great places to dine. Similarly, Bullring, which is located near the canon, is a cheaper option for students and offers various snacks and meals.

Lastly, around exam time, numerous on-campus resources are available for you if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Be sure to keep an eye out for “exam stress busters” like colouring, hot chocolate and even therapy dogs in the library.

TRAVELLING TO

Kauai, Hawaii

By: Tanya Broschinski When I asked a few avid travellers about their experiences in Hawaii I was surprised to find out that none of them had visited the island of Kauai. The most popular islands to visit are the big island, Maui and O’ahu.

So why did Georgia and I decide to spend our once in a lifetime vacation to Hawaii on a less popular island?

To put it short it was money that swayed our decision. As a broke student nothing was more attractive than the cheap round trip flights we were able to book to Kauai. Little did I know Kauai was about to blow my expectations out of the water with just how incredible this underrated island is.

If you love your vacations to include relaxing on a beach, breakfast in bed and lush shopping centers – go to Honolulu on the island of O’ahu. Kauai is not for the faint of heart and as much as I’d love to say my vacation was relaxing and peaceful. It wasn’t. If you love adventure, running through jungles to secret waterfalls and getting dirty Kauai is your perfect vacation destination. I’m still washing the sand and mud out of my hair.

Our first stop was the car rental agency. If you’re going to Kauai I highly suggest renting a car, you can get around the entire island within 2 hours by car and you’ll be able to do a lot more. A word of caution when booking your car – don’t book through a 3rd party site. You can use a third party site to look for good deals but try to book directly through the car company. We made that mistake and were hit by all kinds of hidden fees when we got there. We ended up paying way more than we should have for our car rental.

Regardless of where you travel - be open to new experiences and allow room for spontaneity. Our first day on the island we had planned to go to the Waimea Canyon but after flipping through a few travel magazines I found a cave on our way to the canyon. It looked like it would only be a short hike from the road so we made plans to stop and check it out. The short hike turned into a kayak ride, to a big hike to a secret waterfall. We ended up spending half the day swimming under the falls and cliff jumping into the Wailua River before heading to the canyon.

It rains a lot in Kauai, but forget your umbrella. The showers usually only last a few minutes at a time and will leave you with a breathtaking rainbow. We were fortunate enough to see multiple rainbows on our drive to Pu’u O Kila Lookout at the end of the canyon drive. The drive is incredible, I suggest stopping at every look out on the way up to get a unique view of the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. My favourite stop was the Waimea Canyon Lookout.

As huge dog enthusiasts Georgia and I were missing our mutt’s back home and decided to spread some love at the Kauai Humane Society. They do doggie day field trips where you can take their dogs out for the day to exercise and socialize. I was heartbroken to see rows of cages filled with abandoned dogs when I walked in. We took Rue out to Kalapaki beach where she could run around and enjoy the sun. It was a great way for her to get exposure, many people came up and inquired about her ‘adopt me’ vest. I encourage everyone to consider visiting a local animal shelter while on vacation and spend some time with these wonderful animals.

On our last day we took an amazing hike to Ho’opi’i Falls which were used as a filming location in Jurassic Park.

There are two waterfalls along the hike and at the second waterfall there is a rope swing. It was the perfect spot to release our inner Tarzan. The muddy expedition was worth ruining my running shoes for!

My the end of our trip my legs were covered in cuts and bruises, I had sand everywhere and we spent over an hour vacuuming out the car to avoid cleaning charges. Regardless of how broken, bruised and burnt we were I wouldn’t have wanted to go to any other island. We were blown away by the kindness of the locals and were able to avoid the crowded tourist attractions other islands offer. If you’re looking for an authentic Hawaiian experience, Kauai is the perfect island destination.

Get involved with as many things as possible.

Attend events, get to know your profs, join student council, study abroad, and take some time to travel with friends.

Push yourself to go to all of your lectures.

Attend all job fairs, attend events, say yes to opportunities, and consider joining council!

Go to your professors office hours.

Don’t feel restricted by your major! Involve yourself in any events, classes, or groups that spark your interest and you might find a hidden passion.

Connect with student council to learn about opportunities, make work connections, and make life-long friends!

Take extra time to make connections. This could be with professors, a colleague, or a recruiter- you never know who’s going to make it big in life!

Student Exchange Experiences National University of Singapore by Jiawei Tao If you are looking for a warm weather vacation while studying abroad, Singapore would not disappoint you! The hot temperature typically varies from 33 during the day to 26 at night and remains consistent throughout the year. Thankfully, you can easily access air conditioning from room to room during your time away. While studying at NUS, it is important to learn the local culture. For example, students have to classify the tableware with same colour (for religious reasons) in food NUS's food corner. National University of Singapore (NUS) offers many courses that contain field trips, so students have the time and opportunity to travel through South East Asia.

Exchange Program Guide by Zichen Zou The University of Guelph’s exchange program is an exciting trip for everyone involved! I went to Hongkong for my exchange and loved it! This program is an opportunity for students to experience different cultures around the world and communicate with local citizens. If you are interested in an exchange program, you can find more information by looking up “exchange program” on the University of Guelph’s website. The Centre for International Programs (CIP) is located on the 3rd floor in University Centre.

The CIP is available to assist you in applying for the exchange program step by step.

Make sure to also speak with your program advisor to ensure your credits can be transferred back to the UofG. Before you choose your destination, it’s recommended to check external factors like politics, natural environment, local foods. A basic understanding of your destination would help and improve your exchange experience, also avoid possible risks. While at your destination, go on local & authentic tours as much as you can for getting an excellent understanding of your areas culture and residents!

Travelling to COSTA RICA During the 2019 winter holiday, I travelled to Costa Rica with a friend. Costa Rica is a country in Central America bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, located near Nicaragua and Panama. Costa Rica's coastal plain is separated by rugged mountains, including more than 100 volcanic cones. Costa Rica is an ecologically protected country that has not been over-exploited, allowing for a generally lower budget trip in comparison to urbanized tourist areas.

My friend is very experienced in travelling, so I didn't have to worry much during our time of travel and allowed us to be self-guided! We booked our hotel in advance to ensure our 7-day trip would be easy. When we arrived to the area, we found a local driver to drive us to the hotel. On the way, when asking him about local food and attractions, he agreed to take charge of our trip by driving and buying tickets for us.

Suggestions - Most people speak Spanish only. Look into some basic Spanish phrases you might use on a trip, or prepare to spend a little extra time communicating with the locals!

It’s already been 6 years since UNiC Dance Crew has founded in 2014. We dance together, or more often we share life together. Don’t you have a nice feeling when you are around a group of people who has the same hobby with you? By keeping dancing in routine, the crew usually gathers twice a week and sometimes we do practice every day when there are any special events coming up. It’s always proud for me to say that we do a lot of styles of dance but Jazz, K-pop dance, and Hip-hop accounts for most of the time.

People usually see and know us most often through different types performances and special events, such as orientations, Club Night, One World from ISO, and Spring Festival Gala from UGCSSA. Most importantly, we likely to attend different types of competitions all over Ontario. The most recent competition was hold in Toronto with all Chinese dance studios and crews in Ontario and we made it to the finals!

Now I want to make the comment that dance is my life and everybody makes their own life. If anyone asks what the quickest way is, to fuse into the new environment for new-arrival international students, I would a hundred percent recommend going with a whatever club that you are interest in. It’s not about what you learn in the club but who you might be with. As for UNiC Dance Crew, we are like a huge family gathers student up in master’s degree and down with new blood who are in their first year. As long as you have an interest in dancing and want to make it part of your life, UNiC Dance Crew opens the door for you. Come and follow our steps!

A consultant may find themselves tackling a company issue in departments such as human resources, revenue generation, or marketing and promotion. It is important for consultants to be proficient in data analytics, to be able to read and understand financial statements and other documents to uncover problems not visible in day to day operations. Consultants often work in teams, so one must be able to work well in groups, but also individually at times.

FOUR SEASONS WHISTLER ​CO-OP EXPERIENCE "STE​PS" by "STEPS" - ​Tianqin Li During my third year of university, I completed a twelve month internship at Four Seasons Whistler (FSW). It was not only an amazing work experience, but was one of my most memorable university experiences.

The internship was divided into 3 terms (4 months for each). Co-op students who decide to stay right on the property will have the opportunity to try 3 or sometimes more different job positions, based on their own interests & career directions and the actual internal demand of the hotel. At the end of each term, the human resource manager will arrange a

conversation with students to discuss their next steps. Co-op students typically get priority for job offers, so ensure you check your emails regularly without missing important information, because positions go fast!

In my own experience, I started as a room attendant in the summer and then transferred to be a house attendant in fall, both jobs within the same department (housekeeping). These two positions helped me understand how the largest department in our hotel operated. As a student, this job should be much like a educational process, not only knowing how to complete your own job, but also developing new skills and knowledge by challenging yourself. So, remember, don't be shy.

Communicate with your managers to share your learning demands, objectives, and feelings. They are always willing to help and give you useful advice. Four Seasons provides a management training program called “STEPS” for potential future managers, and I really recommend every co-op student who joins FSW to take this opportunity. It is not for graduating students, only those within first through third year, but will be very beneficial if you are thinking about diving into the hospitality industry as your future career direction.

I completed my 3rd term as a banquet server as food and beverage (F&B) was an important industry which I was eager to learn about. F&B was a busy department and all branches worked closely together. Therefore, I had chances to work in almost all positions within the department like server assistant, dishwasher, and in-room dining attendant. Its so nice to give different areas a try as it can help you figure out a career path.

During your time in Whistler, there will be unlimited fun for you to explore. During the summer, we went swimming, rowing, had picnics by the lake. We also went hiking, mountain biking, and zip lining. In winter, we enjoyed going skiing and ice skating. You will be able to enjoy life in so many ways and will never find yourself bored. The hotel does provide employee welfare for almost all kinds of outdoor activities, so keep yourself informed and you won’t miss out anything! Good luck and have fun!

​TO FUTURE CO-OP STUDENTS I started my co-op program last June at the Four Seasons, Whistler, BC. For students who want to apply for the coop program, I would like to give some suggestions.

Before applying, make sure that the coop program is the best choice for you. I saw some students dropping their coop programs halfway for many reasons, which might mean time and money wasted to some extent. I also noticed some of the students chose summer jobs or part-time jobs instead of the one-year internships. These are individual choices however, I suggest students assess their time management (five years program rather than four), financial situation (co-op fees), and future career consideration; and explore the best choice for yourselves.

During application, the only advice I would give from my experience is do your research on companies that you have interest in.

During the interview process, I was asked how much I knew about Whistler, and I could barely answer. Luckily, the interviewer did not care too much about the lack of research. The UofG co-op center has a series of processes and all you must do is follow it!

After being hired, it is time to adapt to formal workplaces etiquette since the university atmosphere is very different. The people you work with are different and worth to paying attention to. For example, most coworkers in the place I am working are from England, Australia, and New Zealand instead of Canada, which is a great opportunity to expand my cultural habits and learn to get along with others.

CO-OP EXPERIENCE

It's hard to describe how excited I was when I got the internship offer at Delta Toronto, and I felt very lucky that I could spend my co-op work term in downtown. I think most of you have probably heard of this hotel before. Delta Toronto is in a prime location. It is in the centre of Toronto and right next to CN Tower, so from the hotel rooms you have a beautiful view of Toronto’s cityscape.

We also have a Club lounge located on the top floor of the hotel (46th floor), which has great food and service, not to mention the amazing view of CN Tower.

Besides that, since Delta Toronto is only five years old, all the hotel facilities are relatively new, and the rooms are very nice and clean. What I like most about this internship experience is having the chance to meet many experienced and lovely people in the hotel industry. Delta Toronto has a very warm, enthusiastic, and excellent team. My colleagues treat me like family, and I consistently feel supported and comforted when I am there.

They always greet guests with a warm greeting and always work with full potential, which makes me more productive and motivated.

There are a lot of interesting activities that help the staff get to know each other better and become more cohesive. For example, we have employee appreciation week, karaoke week, year-end masquerade party, and pumpkin carving for Halloween.

Presently, it is already the third semester of my internship. Time flies when you’re having fun, and in a blink of an eye, I am about to finish my internship. Almost a year of work experience, has taught me so much about the Delta hotel and the hotel industry. I have worked in housekeeping and the front office for the past two semesters and now I have transferred to the finance department. The experience of working in different departments really helped me understand hotel operations and helped me improve a lot of interpersonal skills. When I first came to work, I was shy and afraid to communicate with others, but I feel that my current communication and work abilities have improved a lot since then.

The Academic Drag Queen An Interview with Tommy Mayberry

Tommy Mayberry has been at University of Guelph since May 2018.

He works as an Educational Developer which is someone who works with faculty and instructors to improve learning for students. He works on aspects of learning such as curriculum development, course redesign, and instructional inclusivity. Tommy also does talks dressed in drag and calls himself “The Academic Drag Queen”. We at the Hornblower thought that was awesome so we brought in Tommy to learn more about him and his experience at Guelph.

What are you researching at the University of Guelph?

My discipline background is Fine Arts Studio and English Language and Literature. I’m also very interested in Gender, Sex, and Bodies study. I started doing drag in my second master's degree as a project centered around understanding myself and my community together and a creative performative project as well. In my teaching and learning research I do a lot of work with writing across the curriculum. For example, thinking of how writing differs in each discipline and the kind of modes and conventions needed for each learner.

How have you been welcomed into the Guelph campus community?

I have not studied here so this is the first time I have worked at a University where I do not have a history with being a student. That was a different experience where I learned about a campus from the perspective of a staff member

rather than being a student. I have been overwhelmingly welcomed by the campus community,it’s a great place to work. The little organizations here are great, I love the bullring and how it is part of the CSA and money goes back to the undergrads through that. It is such a unique building and it has that living room feel.

How important is a strong welcoming community on campuses?

I’ve never felt at any of the universities I’ve worked in there wasn't a strong accepting community.

I’ve never felt what it would be like on the flip side. In high school growing up in a small town I did have a really hard time. I can tell that having a campus culture that is open and accepting keeps the creative juices flowing and you feel motivated to come to work and keep finding new projects. There is room to grow and try different things because you can pitch things and in a accepting

culture people will be interested and you can see what happens from there.

What has been a highlight of working at the University of Guelph?

For the 50th anniversary of the Pride Revolution I did a talk in Drag about the importance of the day. While walking to the library where my talk was, I felt a little uncomfortable which was unusual for me as I usually feel amazing in Drag. Nothing bad happened and I got to the room where I was holding my talk. I talked to the 50 or so people who came about the importance of that day and felt very empowered. Here I am on this campus in my authentic body and it felt amazing. Being able to do Drag in small towns and educate people on how to properly pronoun and identify Queer and Trans people is a great step forward. Every time I do it I feel more and more confident in the room and I am starting to notice types of questions are being asked that weren’t the first time.

What is Success?

Success is typically measured in terms of whether or not someone has achieved a defined goal, such as money or status. If two people were competing for a prize, many would characterize the winner as the successful one.

However, associating success with achieving a particular goal or with having arrived at a particular destination has a serious limitation: it fails to recognize the value of the journey and its role in shaping our outcomes. Although goals may inspire us to take action, success is built within the process. Therefore, in its definition, we must look beyond the narrow scope of a single event or achievement. Success then becomes less about where we go and more about how we get there – the journey itself.

Within my own personal journey, I have found that breaking it into 4 smaller phases has allowed for me to create a cycle of continuous growth and development, focusing on the now, and the creation of more ‘dots’ for tomorrow.

​1. INITIATION This marks the beginning of the journey, or of new learning experiences. This is the planning phase.

Expose yourself to something new – something outside of your comfort zone. Take all the time you may need to settle down and begin gathering information on what you will need for your growth. As you introduce yourself to this new landscape, start to reflect on how you can leverage your previous experiences in your new environment, as well as what skills and resources you may need or want in order to continue your journey. Meet new people, get involved in clubs, organizations, or sub-committees, and learn more about the culture of the group and how you fit in.

2. GROWTH This is the action phase. As you begin to feel relatively comfortable, know that you are now ready to venture further through your journey by finding areas of opportunity. You may want to take additional certifications and/or courses on the side, attend more industry conferences and events, or simply increase the exposure you have, understanding the importance of your current role and the necessary skills needed for roles above yours. In order to see personal and/or professional growth, share these goals with others – hold yourself accountable and remember, if others don’t know, they can’t help you get there.

ACHEIVEMENT After placing time and attention towards growth, it is very possible that you may be recognized by others, or even recognized by yourself for how far you’ve come and what you have been able to achieve. This period is used to see the impact of your development thus far. This comes in many forms: being trusted with responsibilities above the typical responsibilities of your role, receiving recognition from mentors and/or leaders, or simply the intrinsic satisfaction you receive from achieving your goals. It is important to recognize these moments and treat yourself for your accomplishments, as depending solely on others for recognition can be a recipe for disaster.

4. LEADERSHIP The last phase of your cycle consists of being able to apply your learnings in personal development to help serve others – lead others in achieving the same kind of personal development in their own lives. In this phase, you have most likely taken on a leadership role in your organization, whether it is through a promotion, or even leading a special project – this is your moment to preach what you’ve been practicing all along.

Although many of us have a strong vision of where we want to end up, I implore you to use these destinations as inspiration, without it limiting your development. By honing your knowledge and skills thro​​​​​​​ugh this process, and by being the best at what you do today, your dots will undoubtedly connect tomorrow. As your dots start to connect, there is no final picture or destination. Make as many pictures as you’d like, and keep dotting the page.

​Summer Internship Application Process

If you are enrolled in the hospitality, food, and tourism management program at the University of Guelph, all students are required to complete a minimum of 1200 working hours by graduation. During the winter semester (W18) of my first year I decided to apply for an internship at Delta Hotels.

The following guide provides a few helpful steps and tips from my experience to get you started in the internship program!

1. Job Expo - Attended my first job expo in the winter semester of 2018 - Wore a business formal suit and held copies of my resume - Introduced myself to a human resource manager at Delta hotels by Marriott - The manager went over my resume with me looking at my work experience - Got offered for an interview the next day 2. Interview Process - Dressed in business formal attire - I was asked a few questions about school and personal life - A project that was difficult to manage and the outcome - Teamwork conflicts and how they were solved - Any achievements or highlights of my life 3. Online Application - Apply to Marriott and fill out an online job application at www.marriottu.com - This application is basically your profile/ resume - Asks you your preferred location and preferred job position, such as housekeeping, food & beverage, front desk, etc.

4. Patience is Key - The wait time for the reply was pretty long so don’t get too stressed while awaiting their response - The job expo and interview took place in late January and I got a call and an email informing me of my acceptance in early March 5. The Offer - My acceptance offer and call provided the instructions of further steps I had to take - The email included the dates of my first day and last day, the location where accommodation will be provided, and how I can get there Questions I asked when offered the position included: - What I should wear to my first day of work?

- Who I should contact on the first day of work?

- Any relevant fees? ( rent, utilities…)

This was my first job ever and the process went extremely smoothly. This job provided me with one of the most valuable learning experiences in university.

THE CANNON It’s always worth a look to see what has been painted on the cannon when passing by, with all students artistic talents being displayed. The cannon has become such a big part of the campus culture that a CSA and campus co-op website called the cannon is likely the first thing that will come up if you google “Guelph cannon”. The website fancies itself as an online community for students to save thousands of dollars by selling used textbooks, and has many housing ads for students to find places to live. Since the cannon is such a big part of our community, this year's Hornblower team knew they needed to get in on the action. The team camped out and gave the cannon their own artistic touch, promoting the magazine to all the students on campus. This is a fun way to get involved on campus and it is something recommended that all Guelph students do before they graduate!

The Cannon is a British naval gun, rumoured to have been used in the war of 1812. Located in the heart of Guelph campus, it has monumented itself as a staple in the University of Guelph community.

Students are often first introduced to the cannon on campus tours during the summer before their first year or fresh week. Everyone can remember hearing that implausible story told by campus tour guides of the cannon being stolen and ending up at Waterloo campus and having to be taken back by the its rightful Guelph owners. It is a long-standing tradition for students to paint the cannon to support events, clubs, or causes, which provides students and faculty a change of scenery almost daily. The layers of paint being inches thick shows how many causes that Guelph students are passionate about.

COVID-19 In late December of 2019, history was made. A global pandemic called Coronavirus, or COVID-19 for short, overtook the world causing mass panic and devastating impact on society. Businesses were forced to shut down, hotel were left empty, stocks plummeted, schools were ordered to close, and all events were cancelled. Throughout this chaos, citizens around the globe came together to find the light in this storm.

an effect on another. It is reminding us that the false borders that we have put up have little value as this virus does not need a passport. It is reminding us, by oppressing us for a short time, of those in this world whose whole life is spent in oppression.

It is reminding us of how important our family and home life is and how much we have neglected this. It is forcing us back into our houses so we can rebuild them into our home and to strengthen our family unit.

It is reminding us that our true work is not our job, that is what we do, not what we were created to do. Our true work is to look after each other, to protect each other and to be of benefit to one another.

It is reminding us that this can either be an end or a new beginning. This can be a time

of reflection and understanding, where we learn from our mistakes, or it can be the start of a cycle which will continue until we finally learn the lesson we are meant to.

Impact on University of Guelph Students On March 13, students were sent an email stating that classes were cancelled and were to resume in one week through online format delivery. Students had to quickly evacuate residence and student housing in order to social distance themselves from peers. Guelph campus events, such as College Royal, Campus Day, and March Break tours, were all cancelled in attempt to limit visitors in the Guelph region. A 'Virtual Grad Week' was held for 2020 graduates, which included a live toast held on Instagram. However, graduating students were unable to partake in some traditions like the last lecture, and their convocation was postponed. Many students have lost jobs, and Co-op terms have been cancelled or delayed, leaving students worried about their finances.

It is reminding us that after every difficulty, there is always ease. Life is cyclical, and this is just a phase in this great cycle. We do not need to panic; this too shall pass.

Impact on the Hospitality Industry With travel at a standstill, hotels shutting down, flights being cancelled, and restaurants closed, the hospitality industry has undoubtedly taken a massive hit. In comparison to this time last year, RevPAR (revenue per available room) has declined over 80% and occupancy rates are down to nearly 10% all across Canada. Employees working in the industry are being laid off as companies cannot afford to pay them during this time.

After years of publications, we are pleased to publish the 51st edition of the Hornblower. This years team of editors is made up of five students, who all have unique experiences within the University of Guelph community.

This years Hornblower is all about the University of Guelph's community, and the articles feature individual experiences in the Hospitality industry. This year has really been a test of community strength. With a global pandemic occurring, it is astonishing how our community has come together to help each other during a difficult time.
