Louisiana Tech has a long history of music education and is a rapidly growing university. For the moment, the School of Music shares a building with the School of Performing arts, but the growth of the music program is becoming harder for the department to learn or express their talents adequately. This growth is making more opportunities for various programs at Tech and has fortunately given the music department this opportunity.

One of the objectives for the Music department is “to enrich the cultural life of the campus and surrounding communities.� The new building for the School of Music was designed around this statement and achieved this goal through site, program, circulation, and materiality.

The location of the structure is on Tech Drive, the main entrance to the university and making this the first building people see arriving at Tech. I designed the form of the building to be more inviting by using the existing roads and forces from the University to invite not only students but the Ruston community as well.

Various places on the site were premeditated to create moments of interactions with intra-murals or study spots to help strengthen the relationship between the university and the community. These spaces can also serve as performance areas to the program that may be showcasing students’ work, or just being a space to hangout with one another. The stairs that lead to the main entrance of the building can serve as a mode of transportation, a study area, or a performance area.

When looking at the building from Tech drive, we see the white brick on the left side, and this symbolizes the more traditional side of the university and houses a lot of the larger performance areas. On the right, we see a French stone pattern that represents a more modern look and houses a lot of the faulty offices. The communal spaces that are in between these zones of the program are lounge areas; they are placed there to help mediate the gap learning and relaxing. The materials throughout the building help not only break up the sound within these spaces but also the form of the rooms to help push the program in a new direction.

03. Sun and Thermal Analysis Site #1 The location of Site 1 is on the corner of Tech Drive and W. Barnett Springs. The morning sun is blocked by the existing buildings on campus and during the early evenings the sun is shaded by the trees located along W. Barnett

03. Sun and Thermal Analysis Site #2 The Location of Site 2 is on the corner of Wisteria Street and Hergot Avenue. The Sun is located in the center of campus but would be exposed more to the heat of the Sun. Whereas the building has no existing shade and needs to stay cooler for instruments.
