Riparian Conditions

Fragmented rock crossing over fallcreek

LA1420 Academic project Spring 2022

Flat Rock, a shallow stream near Forest Home Drive within Fall Creek, is a longstanding point of interest in Ithaca, celebrated for its natural and man-made features. The design redefines the crossing experience from Forest Home Drive into the natural preserve, emphasizing functionality, symbolism, and context-sensitivity while considering materiality and change.

A Closer Look:

The design intervention responds to the natural obstructions along Fall Creek. By aligning with the site’s existing structures and rhythms, the project offers a thoughtful reinterpretation of the environment, inviting visitors to engage with the space in new and meaningful ways.

Daniluk Farm & Stables

Agrovoltaic integration

LA 3020 Academic project Fall 2023

This project explores the potential for integrating agrovoltaics and land connectivity at Daniluk Farm & Stables, located in Onondaga County near Syracuse. At the site level, we analyzed unused parcels, hazard zones, and wetland typologies, uncovering opportunities for restoring disconnected natural areas. This led to a focus on linking these spaces while considering the farm’s agricultural systems, such as alfalfa and beef production. By integrating solar panels with existing land uses, we aimed to explore innovative energy solutions that harmonize with ecological and agricultural processes.

Exploring Hydric Soils and Land Use:

In this project, soil was examined as a critical agent influencing landscape processes, particularly the hydric nature of soils and their interaction with land use. The analysis explored different scales, uncovering patterns of fragmentation and potential transformation.

Tangled systems:

Coney Island faces infrastructure challenges due to its vehicle centric design, which has extensive impervious surfaces that heighten flooding risk. We pay special attention to vulnerable areas like Neptune Avenue, prone to flooding due to lower elevation and proximity to water sources. This study establishes a foundation for effective flood mitigation strategies in the community.

A Slight Tilt:

Sloping streets designed to manage water flow through vegetated swales can connect to marshes during high tides or heavy rainfall.

Harnessing Water:

Excess parking spaces in flood prone areas can be repurposed as recreational floodplains with water storage designed to temporarily flood during heavy rainfall and tidal events.

Landscapes for the Town of Ithaca

West Hill

LA2020 Academic project

Fall 2023

West Hill Reimagined is a project focused on revitalizing rural neighborhoods in Ithaca that could benefit from more green, programmed spaces. This initiative considers the development of a public park in Ithaca, specifically targeting West Hill Park near Conifer Village. By examining the park’s relationship with the community and its natural environment while incorporating local feedback, the project has devised innovative strategies for creating new public areas that offer a unique experience for Ithaca residents. These efforts also tackle essential site challenges, like poor drainage and steep slopes, ensuring that the park is both functional and welcoming.

A Vision for West Hill Park

Nominated for presentation to the Town Public Works Department, this project offers a compelling concept for the site’s development. It emphasizes connectivity, promotes birding activities, enhances infrastructure around the community garden, and addresses key site challenges.

Redefining the Image of Downtown Houston Houston is So Hot Right Now

SWA Summer Program Summer 2024

Guided by SWA and Downtown Houston+ , the student project “Houston Is So Hot Right” sought innovative strategies to make Houston’s urban core cooler and more livable. My focus on “Redefining the Image of Downtown Houston” aimed to reimagine the city’s urban identity by emphasizing user experiences, connectivity, and the creation of landmarks. Through interviews, user feedback, and analyses of movement and spatial connections, we envisioned a “Cool Loop,” a network of cooling strategies integrated into public spaces to enhance resilience, connectivity, and livability.

Interviews: Local Stories

Houston is So Hot Right Now

Featured at POST Houston during the Texas Society of Architects Annual Conference, this initiative highlights strategies like shade structures, cooling stations, and tree canopies. By addressing extreme heat while enriching Houston’s identity, the project offers a transformative vision for the city’s future. Videography and interviews enhanced storytelling and amplified community voices, while reimagined parcel designs integrated passive cooling and sustainability.

Consuming and producing knowledge from food

LA3010 Academic project Fall 2023

The project focuses on labor, process, and work in food production, drawing on personal experiences that highlight food distance and cultural significance. Using Jello and gelatinization as examples, it examines how food processing affects culinary practices and land stewardship. Jello symbolizes concerns about homogenization eroding cultural identity, as unique stories become an indistinguishable mixture. The changing forms of Jello reflect the loss of its original cultural and land connections, illustrating cultural erosion amid excessive processing.

Table Setting:

Tensions between innovation and industrialization, differentiation and homogenization, along with the need to reconnect with labor intensive processes in food production, as exemplified by molecular gastronomy, manifest as the blob and its table matrix.

Fabrication:

Laser cutting fiberboard creates a visually appealing table matrix at different levels. This display features inedible gelatin combinations, transforming the dining experience into a unique exploration of texture and culinary innovation.

Cultural distance:

Cacao, central to this narrative, journeys from Ecuador’s tropical basins to high altitudes as hot chocolate. Its true significance extends beyond savoring; it represents a culturally refined process that blends local ingredients, transforming it into a meaningful beverage for my family.

Conveyor Belt Pavings: A Study in Form and Materiality Exploring the Intersection of Structure and Composition

LA3180 Academic project Spring 2024

Conveyor Belt Pavers take inspiration from FOA’s S-E Coastal Park, where the paver unit serves as the central design element. The project involved an extensive exploration of form and fabrication, emphasizing trial, error, replicability, and practical implementation. Through iterative experimentation, the process led to the development of refined concrete mixtures and molding techniques. This approach illustrates how a single modular piece can unlock innovative and playful design possibilities, transforming functional elements into dynamic and expressive ground surfaces.

Quick-drying concrete, also known as fast-setting concrete, typically consists of a specialized blend of cementitious materials, aggregates, and additives.
