Mercedes-Benz Introduces the All-New G-Class

M

ercedes-Benz rolled out its new 2019 G-Class luxury off-road vehicle at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and while it remains true to its iconic look, updates have been made to allow the G-Class to enter a new era in terms of technology and form. It still features the exterior-mounted door hinges and surface mounted hood but now is 53 mm longer and 121 mm

wider than the outgoing model, and all surfaces have a more taut design resulting in narrower, more precise gaps. Inside of the GClass, there have been some significant changes which reinterpret the classic look of days gone by and bring it into more modern times. High-quality materials are used throughout, a new larger display shows virtual instruments directly in the driver’s field of vision, and a new touchpad with controller in the centre console allows the driver to make adjustments without taking their eyes off the road. In addition to the new technology, the G-Class features more room for both the front passenger and driver, and also for passengers in the second row. In terms of off-road prowess, the G-Class has made some refinements and now performs even better off-road thanks to its standard ladder-type frame and three 100-percent differential locks and a low range off-road gear reduction. A new independent suspension with a double-wishbone front axle is featured as is a new rigid rear axle which results in better ground clearance. In addition to many other new features, another notable one would be the Dynamic Select system which allows you to choose from up to five driving modes for the G-Class including Comfort, Sport, Eco, Individual and G-Mode which is activated whenever a differential lock is turned on or the Low Range off-road reduction gear has been engaged. This puts the G-Class in full off-road mode and will allow you to tackle just about any terrain you come across. In addition to the improved off-road dynamics, the G-Class performs even better on-road thanks to a new front axle design. Under the hood of the new G-Class will be a 4.0L V8 engine that produces 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque.

Ram Officially Unveils the All-New 2019 Ram 1500 Pickup After what felt like a very long wait, Ram has finally unveiled the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 half-ton pickup, which has seen a reduction of 225 lbs. from its overall weight, features a brand new look both inside and out, and boasts a ton of new safety and technology features. To start the weight shedding, the new Ram 1500 has a chassis that has been reduced by 120 lbs. with 100 of those pounds coming directly as a result of a lighter frame that is made from 98-percent high-strength steel. In addition, selective components, such as the tailgate, engine mounts, and front axle centre section have taken advantage of lightweight aluminum which creates even more of a weight reduction. Three new frame lengths are offered in order to create a spacious cab with the Crew Cab short-bed and Crew Cab long-bed models being four inches longer than their predecessors. New independent front suspension is featured in the front with the third generation exclusive five-link coil suspension in the rear. The new Ram was engineered with extensive wind-tunnel testing which produced the ultra-aerodynamic exterior shape while an active grille shutter system automatically closes the airflow through the huge grille when cooling is least needed. A 4x4 off-road package is available for nearly every trim, and adds one-inch of suspension lift with or without the class-exclusive four-corner air suspension, 32-in. off-road tires and an electronic locking rear differential to name a few. Under the hood is a choice of two engines including the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine as standard, producing 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. The second option is the tried and true 5.7L Hemi V8 producing 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired to their own individual TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmissions. One of the most notable new features for the new Ram is the addition of the eTorque mild hybrid system which replaces the traditional alternator on the engine with a belt-driven motor generator unit. This unit works with a 48-volt battery pack to enable quick and seamless start/stop function, short duration torque and brake energy regeneration. The interior of the Ram features the largest cab in the segment and now includes a Uconnect 4C NAV on a 12-inch fully configurable touchscreen that offers split-screen capability for dual-application operation. Having only scratched the surface with what’s new on this truck, check in later this year for a full review after we have had a chance to spend some time behind the wheel.

Another big announcement to come out of the Detroit Show was the official announcement of the return of the Ford Ranger midsize pickup truck. The truck, which has only been available in other markets besides North America since 2011, features a new exterior design, chassis and powertrain that has been specifically developed for North American customers. Boasting a highstrength steel frame, the Ranger will be equipped with the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine which will be paired to a segment-exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission. When it hits dealership showrooms, the Ranger will be available in three different trim levels with available Chrome and Sport appearance and FX off-road packages in SuperCab or SuperCrew cab configurations. The muscular exterior design of the Ranger is meant to convey toughness and features a raked grille and windshield to provide an athletic appearance but also to aid in aerodynamics and reduce wind noise. The back of the truck features a Ranger nameplate stamped in the tailgate, and a rugged steel bumper with available integrated trailer hitch receiver. The twin-power dome hood houses the EcoBoost engine, which has been designed for both efficiency and performance as it provides torque numbers that are on par with competing V6 engines. When fitted with the optional FX4 Off-Road Package, the Ranger receives of-road tuned shocks, all-terrain tires, a frame mounted heavy-gauge steel front bash plate, frame-mounted skid plates and FX4 badging. In addition, the FX4 package features an innovative Terrain Management system which allows you to choose from four distinctive drive modes –normal; grass, gravel and snow; mud and ruts; and sand. On top of the off-road capability, the Ranger will incorporate many driver assist technologies that have become commonplace for most if not all new vehicles these days. Additionally, the Ranger offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility plus available FordPass Connect 4G LTE Wi-Fi.

Jeep Reveals the All-New 2019 Jeep Cherokee Mid-Size SUV Jeep has officially unveiled the redesigned 2019 Cherokee mid-size SUV which has significantly changed its quirky exterior look and now features a more traditional look that is somewhat similar to the larger Jeep Compass and Grand Cherokee. The front end goes away from the split front lights and now features a more typical headlight design and the rear has seen a departure from the somewhat stubby taillight design which was previously featured. Inside features a few new materials and colours, but remains fairly close to the previous generation which is a good thing as it was practical and well laid out. The 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder and 3.2L Pentastar V6 engines return, but the addition of a new 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque give the Cherokee lineup even more versatility and provides similar if not more power than the V6 but with the fuel efficiency closer to the four-banger. Although there is a lot more new things on the 2019 Cherokee that we haven’t yet mentioned, we’re going to dedicate the remainder of this news item to the part that would most appeal to the readers of this off-road magazine; the Cherokee Trailhawk. Firstly, the Trailhawk features the Jeep Active Drive Lock system that provides a 1-in. ride height increase, a two speed Power Transfer Unit with torque management and low range, and a locking rear differential among other things. In addition the Trailhawk utilizes Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control system which allows the driver to choose the on- and off-road setting of optimum performance. The Trailhawk also sees some appearance upgrades that not only provide the Cherokee with a more rugged look, but also provide better approach and departure angles which is ideal for tough off-road driving situations. The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk models are Trail Rated by Jeep which indicates that the vehicle is designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions.



FIRST LOOK: 2018 JEEP WRANGLER JL

pple released the first iPhone. The United States elected its first African American president. Full House returned to TV. These are just a few of the milestones that have occurred in the long 10 years since the current Jeep Wrangler was released back in 2007. However, fans of the off-road vehicle now have cause to celebrate, as during November’s Los Angeles Auto Show (LAAS) the iconic American automotive brand announced a completely overhauled “JL” platform is on its way. For its grand LAAS unveil, a separate tent area was reserved away from the rest of the hubbub, going to show just how important an event it was. Head of Jeep Michael Manley did the honours of introducing the new vehicle, speaking about the importance of

heritage and the ownership base, two things significantly influencing the redesign. “Jeep owners have always played an important role in shaping the history and the character of their brand, and their passion is something unique and absolute. It’s probably one of our most defining attributes,” said Manley. “One owner said when I die, I want to be buried in my Jeep because it’s never been in a hole I couldn’t get out of. [They] are proud to show their passion and many take their spirit a step further by having it permanently tattooed on their body. Now that’s the kind of loyalty most automakers can only dream of creating,” he said, laughing. Keeping this in mind, virtually all the changes to the JL - which continues to be available in two and four door, Sahara and Rubicon form - pay homage to previous models. For example, the seven-slot grill is back, the top half now gently curved to give a sleeker look, and the outermost slats intersect the round headlamps as they did on the original Willys CJ. The forward turn signals have migrated from the grille to the front of the fender flares. At the rear, the traditional square taillamps house optional LED lighting. Other upgrades make an adventuring lifestyle easier. The windshield, mounted steeper than before to increase aerodynamics, folds down quickly via a simple four-bolt design. A header bar between the A-pillars allows the rearview mirror to stay safely in place. The Sunrider soft top has additional articulation points so opening to partial or full position is more convenient. A one-touch powered top is also coming later next year. Inside, there are nicer soft-touch materials used, an engine start button encased in a weatherproof surround, additional innovative storage spaces and a fourth-generation Uconnect infotainment system accessed either using a seven or 8.4-inch touchscreen

display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto hands-free smartphone connectivity are both supported. Manley promises the upcoming generation to be the most capable one so far. As many other manufacturers have been doing as of late, lightweight aluminum is utilized all over the vehicle including the doors, hinges, and engine mounts, helping drop over 90 kilograms of weight. Suspension continues to be based upon a five-link coil configuration, but spring rates and shock dampening are retuned to provide an optimal balance between ride comfort and off-road handling. And with these specifications, drivers will want to head to the path untraveled often. The approach angle is 44 degrees, breakover 27.8 degrees and departure 37 degrees; ground clearance is rated at 277 millimetres and up to 762 millimetres of water depth can be forded. In addition, Rubicons receive an electronic front sway-bar disconnect to offer additional wheel travel as needed. There are no fewer than four powertrain options destined for the new Wrangler. A turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder joins the lineup producing 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque – more than the V6 we’ll discuss in a second. Manley calls the four-banger a “mild hybrid” as it incorporates electric power assist, intelligent battery charging and regenerative braking functionality. The familiar 285horsepower 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 gains engine stop-start technology. A 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 is coming in 2019, pumping out 260 horses and a massive 442 lb-ft of torque. The final powerplant on the list was a surprising one. “A full plug-in Jeep Wrangler will be available in 2020, furthering our commitment to all those who value the responsible sustained enjoyment of the great outdoors,” said Manley. Details on this electrified variant are forthcoming.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard across all trims, geared to improve crawl ratio performance. Or, buyers can choose a fuel efficient, smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic. “With nearly 4 million miles of testing under its belt, traversing the globe in scorching heat and blistering cold, the all-new Wrangler is ready to take its rightful position in the legendary Jeep lineup. So what we’ve shown you today is a modern-day vehicle that stays true to the original. In so many ways, the new Wrangler has been created by the people for the people based on their suggestions and feedback over the years – now with this latest addition we recommit ourselves to a design that is functional, authentic and true to the old promise to deliver more.” Stay tuned for in-depth coverage of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler on the following pages in a First Drive review!

Refined, Authentic We put the all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL through its paces in the Arizona desert

I

t’s been no secret that over the past few years, we’ve seen the automotive market sway heavily toward utility vehicles (Light Trucks, SUVs, CUVs) and away from the traditional car. This trend has allowed brands such as Jeep to thrive as they have accounted for nearly half of all FCA vehicles sold worldwide in the past three years. Part of the reason for that has been the continued success of one of the most iconic vehicles still available today, the Jeep Wrangler. Although the previous generation JK model had remained largely unchanged for much of its ten-year run, the sales numbers and overall popularity of the vehicle definitely did not reflect that. In saying that, it was definitely time for some updates, and as you probably saw in Benjamin’s unveiling story from L.A., Jeep has done just that by rolling out the all-new 2018 Wrangler JL. To mark the occasion and to get some seat time, I was flown out to Tucson, Arizona which proved to be the perfect setting to put Jeep’s latest Wrangler through its paces. Refined, authentic. This was the slogan being bandied about by Jeep and FCA representatives throughout the event, and for good reason, as they are probably the best two words to describe the changes and upgrades seen on the new JL.


Starting with the exterior, the JL retained its classic Wrangler proportions with its seven-slot grille, iconic round headlights and overall shape, but just about everything has been updated in an understated way. The new headlights feature LED technology, the windshield and grille come at a better angle which provides nine percent better aerodynamics, and the lighter-weight doors are now easier to remove and even easier to operate. I could go on for a while here, but to summarize quickly, the hard top is lighter and easier to remove, the soft top is now sans zippers, a new power soft top is offered, the wheels are completely new and the windshield now folds down after the removal of just four bolts. All of this is to say that although much is new and refined on the JL, Jeep smartly remained true to its already great design. Inside of the Wrangler is perhaps where the biggest change was needed. The previous generation Jeep Wrangler JK debuted in 2007, which is exactly where you felt you were when you got behind even a 2017 model. For starters, gone is the antiquated and hard-to-use infotainment system, in favour of the new Uconnect 3 or 4 systems with three different screen sizes available - 5-, 7-, or 8.4-in. depending on model and trim package. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have further increased functionality, while an available 7-in. cluster display is able to show you things like off-road angles, tire pressures and audio information. A backup camera is finally standard, and over 75 standard and available safety systems are offered. In addition to all of the new technology features, the JL’s interior is also more spacious, providing more headroom for the front seat occupants, while also providing more rear legroom (especially in the 4-door Unlimited models) and more space for cargo in the back. The layout of climate controls is also much improved, as is just the general look thanks to soft-touch materials and body colour-matched accents on some of the higher trims. As Benjamin mentioned, the Wrangler JL will debut with two available powertrain options - the returning 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 pushing out 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and the new 2.0-litre turbocharged I4 that produces 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Both engines feature stop/start technology and are paired to a new 8-speed automatic transmission with the V6 also offering a 6-speed manual option. The 3.6

felt very much the same as it was in the JK, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It provides more than adequate power and won’t break the bank at the gas pump. In saying that, I thought the better of the two options was the turbocharged 2.0 as it provided basically the same power numbers but added smoother acceleration and better throttle response, and would undoubtedly provide better fuel economy numbers than its larger and thirstier counterpart. Although it was as capable as it ever has been off-road, on-road driving is where I felt the JK was seriously lacking. It felt sort of like a box-onwheels and challenged you to produce a smooth ride even on the nicest, straightest roads. Thankfully, this new version has fully addressed this and offers a much more refined ride than its predecessor. The new JL provides smoother acceleration, handles corners much better, and is less clunky feeling overall. In saying that, the Wrangler will probably never be quite as smooth as some of the car-like SUVs/CUVs, but this is a sacrifice most Jeep fans are willing to make in order to gain the iconic look and legendary capability. Given that manual transmissions are begrudgingly going the way of the dodo bird, Jeep only had a couple of 6-speed manual examples available at the event, and although I personally never was able to try one, by all accounts it was much better than before. During the media drive in Tucson, we started by taking some Sahara and Sport models through a mostly on-road driving loop that provided some high-speed freeways and low-speed twisty mountain roads. After our very cool first stop at the Old Tucson Movie Studio and Theme Park, we were told to head towards a place called Saguaro Ranch where there was a fleet of Rubicon models and a challenging off-road course. Once we entered the Ranch, we were faced with some pretty harsh terrain just to get to the meeting point where our Rubicons awaited. Not surprisingly, after switching to four-high, our Jeeps handled the journey without incident and eventually got us there in short order. After a brief (but very good) lunch, we were told that the off-road course was ready and to grab one of the available Rubicons and have at it. To further its off-road prowess, the Rubicon models are fitted with front and rear electronic locking differentials, an electronically disconnecting sway bar, and 33-in. 16 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2018

BFGoodrich K02 all-terrain tires. Although very few people would ever put their brand new Jeep through such challenging terrain, Jeep seemed to be determined to show just how truly capable this new model is. The course had everything from very steep rocky hill climbs, to three point turns at the apex of said hill, to just-as-tough descents back to the flat ground. There were points when only three wheels were on the ground and others where you were sure you were convinced you were about to roll the Wrangler right on to its roof. The course certainly confronted the Jeep’s capabilities at times, but the experience left us with no doubt that this vehicle was made to be put through them and come out unscathed on the other side. I could go on and on with even more details about the Jeep Wrangler JL, such as the very cool information plate bolted on to the tailgate that displays the vehicle’s exterior dimensions and water fording capabilities (30-in. or 76.2cm at 8 km/h), but I think it would be shorter just to say that I was impressed by virtually everything on this vehicle. It is in every way better than the previous model but has retained enough of its heritage to keep even the most ardent purists happy. It couldn’t have been an easy job to redesign an icon, but the results speak for themselves. Refined, authentic.

W

hen you grow up camping, a love of the outdoors becomes second nature, as it is with Washington’s Austin Jones. Not surprising that once he was able to drive, he wanted something to take him out to the woods. A ’93 Jeep YJ came first, a vehicle that began the learning process, from performing maintenance and repairs, to learning to drive off-road, and selecting parts to improve performance, durability, and functionality. This led Austin to 4Wheel Parts, where he’s been employed for five years, currently as an Assistant Manager. After a few years, Jones bought his first diesel, a 2001 Ford 7.3L F-250. As he did previously,

modifying it with a lift kit, tires and wheels, performance additions, and a custom interior, it looked great and was a lot of fun. A 2013 Mustang 5.0 followed when he wanted to go fast. The Mustang was lowered, wheels and tires were added, a custom audio system integrated, and performance parts installed. Jones later realized he missed a vehicle that could go anywhere, be reliable, and run off-road. Returning to his Roots That’s when a friend and co-worker, Chris Beavers, recommended the 2005 Toyota 4Runner. Why? 2005 was the last year with a V8, and the same chassis as the Tacoma meant parts availability. The body style would also keep safety equipment, camping gear and food items out of the elements. In 1998, the Toyota 2UZ-FE debuted, with a cast iron cylinder block for reliability and durability. Cylinder diameter increased to 94 mm, using a crank with a piston stroke of 84 mm. As a result, the 2UZ is a low-speed, 4.7-litre engine with aluminum heads. From ’05, the variable valve timing system (VVTi) increased power to 271 HP at 4,800 RPM, and 315 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 rpm. The Toyota 2UZ has a 300,000+ mile lifespan if serviced properly and protected by a high-quality engine oil such as Valvoline Semi-Synthetic, which he uses.

Another feature leading to the 4Runner’s selection was Toyota’s Active TRAC, which controls engine output and brake fluid pressure so the drive force is distributed to the wheels that have traction. This enhances drivability in extreme Feb/MAR 2018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 23

Before a suitable 4Runner was located, Austin sold his truck, Jeep and a trailer to finance his latest build, a rig that would double as his daily driver. In only eight months, Jones’ 4Runner was overland ready. Overland Outfitting The ICON Vehicle Dynamics V.S. The ICON CDC Valve allows for external tuning with ten adjustment settings from soft to hard, which he normally has set to 10.

A CBI rear plate bumper with a swing away tire carrier follows the Toyota’s contours much like the factory part it replaced. No ordinary nerf bars, the AllPro Rock Sliders feature 1/4-in. plate steel CNC laser-cut mounting plates. Fabricated from 1.75 x .120-in. wall tubing, the outer tube angles upward to provide more ground clearance and door protection. The Rock Sliders extend outward just before the rear wheels to provide extra body protection and protect the rear portion of the cab through tight obstacles. GOBI’s rack allowed the 4Runner to fit in the garage and still keep the rooftop tent mounted. GOBI custom fits each rack to the vehicle, doesn’t require drilling or modifications, and are incredibly strong. Built of 1-in. heavy-gauge tubing, the rack also comes with crossbars that are compatible with Thule and Yakima accessories in addition to rooftop tents. As for the rooftop tent, a Smittybilt Overlander rooftop tent was chosen for its construction, durability and affordability. Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde o you spend a lot of time in the saddle of your off-roader? Have D your seats been beating you to death, or have they faded from the no-top wheeling you do? Or are they just trashed from the age

of your rig? Consider Mastercraft Safety for your next set of seats. I’m onto my second Jeep using a set of Mastercraft seats (my TJ also had a Mastercraft Safety bench in the back) and could not be happier. After running my last Jeep for eight years from day one with Mastercraft racing seats, it was a no-brainer that the new build was going to get the same seats. The webbed system gives better shock absorption then a traditional steel spring seat, which can transfer more vibrations through to the occupants. In the case of the seat ever sagging, they can be returned to Mastercraft, who can re-tighten the webbing and restore the support and comfort level back into the seats. 9. Take the adjusters off the belts first. Pull the webbing through the seat slots; keep in mind there is a left- and right-hand belt. With the two belts through the seat, you can reinstall the hardware.

10. The belts on the corners of the seats can be used to fish your factory three-point harnesses through, or run radio coms or helmet fresh air tubes.

11. The 5-point system all comes together in the locking clamp – two shoulder, two lap and the crotch strap – which also goes through a slot in the seat.

14. Racing requires belts to be SFI-certified and changed every two years. I’ve had these belts almost that long already during my build – something to keep in mind if you have a project you want to race. Buy your belts when you’re ready to race, or use an old set for mock up.

D

epending on who you are, the term “old Land Rover” conjures up images of either total distress amid a puddle of oil, or complete freedom and ability in all kinds of globetrotting off-road settings. The discontinuation of the Defender model in 2016 (not sold in Canada since 1994) ended a nearly seventy-year-long legacy that cemented

Land Rover as one of the most notorious all-terrain brands in the automotive world. Although some models of Range Rover and Land Rover today may seem soft around the edges, they are in fact every bit more capable than their bold looks might suggest. But let’s keep talking about old Land Rovers, because they are a key part of this tale. The image of a reckless, adventuring couple charging through the desert in an open-topped Series II is popular, but might not be all that romantic were you to attempt it. Like any old four-by-four (sorry, Toyota and Jeep owners - all vehicles wear down eventually) there are ongoing challenges and tribulations in keeping a 20-plus-year-old Land Rover on the road, especially if you plan on taking yours to the edge of North America on a trip that’s never been done before. Ray Hyland and Chris Walker & Natalie Weir saw an opportunity to be the first travelers to brave a brand new road deep into Canada’s Arctic Circle. Until 2017, there was no year-round access to Canada’s Arctic Ocean coastline. Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories – population ~800 and known as Tuk for short - lies at the mouth of the Mackenzie River; the same river that only when frozen provides a dangerous, solitary road link to the rest of North America. (The Mackenzie section was also the setting for the TV series “Ice Road Truckers.”) Several decades ago, the federal government decided that a year-round link was needed, and so construction went ahead (in timely federal fashion) to convert the last 175 km of the winter ice-road in to a gravel-paved thoroughfare.

When word of a new road reached this group of explorers, they set out to be the first people to travel the vast distance from Canada’s southern border all the way to Tuk via paved roads and the existing Dempster Highway. With special permission from Northwest Territories officials, it became a reality. Thorough preparation was required, especially with regard to mechanics, personal safety and comfort. Hyland rebuilt the V8 motor on his newly-acquired 1988 Range Rover Classic, and Walker – driving instructor at Overlanding BC - had recently installed a venerable 300Tdi into his Defender 90. With fresh power plants in each vehicle, there was high confidence that mechanical breakdowns would not delay the trip. As for the rest of the vehicle, each owner stayed comfortable in their own style. Hyland decided to use the spacious luxury SUV’s interior as a shelter, which proved more than comfortable for one person – even equipped with a second spare tire inside. (A necessity for rutted, remote roads covered with sharp rocks.) Chris and Natalie were the proud owners of a new roof-top tent from Treeline Outdoors in Alberta, and stored spares and weather-hardy gear on the 90’s roof rack. Despite the late-summer arctic climate (where the average high throughout the summer months is under 20 degrees) each setup was more than comfortable for its occupants. Reaching the new section of road is an achievement in endurance in itself – over 4,000 km of paved and dirt roads through British Columbia, Yukon and Northwest Territories. As they traveled north, the team found that amenities became fewer and further between. “The road to Tuk from the start of the Dempster is 1,000 km of dirt in mountainous and highly remote terrain with no rescue services and only two stops along the way for fuel and only one for supplies and parts (Inuvik)” says Walker. This meant that one-too-many tire punctures or a more serious breakdown could result in days of being stranded – but despite the distance travelled, neither vehicle ended up stuck or disabled. Travel through northern British Columbia and the Yukon offers plenty of untouched wildernesses to experience. A significant feature of offroad culture in Canada is the endless supply of free camping spots on Crown land, often with fresh creeks for water and excellent views of nearby mountain ranges. Other sections weren’t as exciting. For the long stretches of road, Hyland recounts how he stayed alert and entertained. “The greatest hazard on a trip like this is not the bears,


or getting stuck, it’s losing your attention for a moment and having an accident. Put some effort into making sure you get a good rest, and stay awake during the day. Get a decent sound system in your truck and download a bunch of audio books or podcasts before you leave.” Once they arrived in Tuktoyaktuk, Ray, Chris and Natalie were met with curious glares – the road wasn’t open to the public yet, so the sight of a couple of Land Rovers in late Summer was wholly unexpected. Once they figured out how they reached Tuk, the villagers were more than welcoming. “(Locals) we met were friendly and helpful. Everyone felt like they were all part of a group, regardless of what group you found yourself in each day” says Hyland. Some were excited at the prospect of more tourists; others were more apprehensive about the attention and vices the new road might bring. Most in Tuk support the road and the economy it will bring, considering that many resource projects - meant to be serviced by the road – have been abandoned. Development of a year-round Dempster linking Inuvik to Tuk is the result of a changing landscape in Canada’s arctic. The idea was to provide reliable access to the rich resources of the territories - oil, gas, minerals and fishing. But in the intervening decades, the federal government introduced restrictions to curb that development, so as a result the road is primarily for tourism access, and will make life easier for the residents of Tuk, who often pay five times more for almost-expired groceries shipped in from points far away. Another consideration is the ongoing change of temperatures and weather patterns in the arctic (and around the world). Many sections of permafrost aren’t so permanent anymore, which drastically affects accessibility on existing roads even in the summer. Special construction techniques were employed to protect the soft, now-waterlogged ground in these sections by “floating” the new highway on metres of gravel and soil. Perhaps in a warmer future, the Dempster Highway will lead to new settlements in Canada’s arctic. For today, the road is open to anyone who seeks adventure at the edge of the world – and should surely be on the radar for avid Overlanders looking for a challenge and uncharted territory to conquer in 2018. High Schoolers Build “Freedom” Truck for SEMA Story and photos by John Gunnell

F

reedom High School, in Freedom, Wisconsin, is one rare educational institution these days, since it has defied the nationwide trend in the United States of moving away from teaching hands-on technical skills. Freedom High School clings to the tradition of offering industrial arts courses such as woodworking and automotive technology. Because of this tradition, it is said that on a summer’s night, almost every garage door in the town of Freedom will be open and reveal some sort of car or truck project going on. Automotive instructor Jay Abitz, and his father before him, have been credited with creating this enthusiasm for the automotive trades in Freedom. For years, Jay’s dad honed the skills of local teenagers who learned to do mechanical and body repairs on regular cars. When Jay followed in his dad’s footsteps, he put more emphasis on the restoration of special-interest vehicles. He also took the automotive enthusiasm way beyond the confines of the

Sept. 14, 2017. At this point the Toyota 4Runner looked far from finished and the SEMA Show was looming.

Starting last spring, the students began going through the 4Runner to make sure it was mechanically sound. They got going with a coolant flush, changing belts and cleaning the truck up a little bit. One of the first aftermarket items installed on the truck was a lift kit donated by a Green Bay company called Truedell Performance. Then, they nailed down the off-road, rock crawler look. Paint for the 4Runner was donated by Sherwin-Williams—one of Abitz’s biggest supporters. “They sponsor us through the Collision Repair Educational Foundation,” he explained. “They donated the base coat, clear coat, paint, primer and all that, as well as most materials like filler, etc.; whatever we needed.” The students and auto club members at first met on Wednesday afternoons and worked on the 4Runner together. With the school

We’ve never done any four-wheel-drive stuff either, so this is a totally new thing for us.” The students and auto club members built a 4Runner for the annual SEMA Show. The old Toyota 4x4 was converted from a rusty old truck into a “rock crusher” to be displayed in the Sherwin-Williams booth at the giant automotive trade show. Abitz organized the build, but the idea and the 4Runner came from Rick Paulick, the owner of the NEW Motorama, an indoor multi-segment car and truck show held in Green Bay, Wisconsin each spring. “The Freedom High School students and other members of the Freedom High School Auto Club help out at my show,” said Paulick. “We have a workshop where young kids can use metal shaping machines supplied by Baleigh to stamp out tin toy cars. This workshop grew so popular that I needed helpers, and the Freedom High School Auto Club members came to help me. They did such a great job that I wanted to help them out in return. I decided to do this by donating a car to them and this morphed into the idea of the kids doing a SEMA build. Jay Abitz had the connections that made this sort of thing really happen.”

On Thursday, Oct. 19, the truck was displayed for around 200 people at Beyond Redline Performance in Green Bay. “Rick Paulick had the vision,” Abitz stressed. “It was his idea and he lined the vehicle up

for us. Then, we started working with Sherwin-Williams to get it ready for SEMA and actually put it in their booth at SEMA. We committed to a SEMA project and we got it done,” Abitz said.

A big boost came on Sept. 14 when representatives of Toys For Trucks, a Wisconsin-based truck accessories retailer, delivered $7,849 worth of donations from its supplier companies to the enthusiasts to help keep the SEMA project on track. Bill Ciuplinski, the manager of the Toys For Trucks store in Green Bay, delivered the parts to Freedom High School. They were supplied by ARB, AVS, Bushwacker, Hi-Lift, Lund, Mile Marker, Pro-Car by Scat, Rampage, The Stripe Guy, Vision Wheels and Yakima. They included individual donations as high as $1,800. In addition, Ciuplinski lined up help for painting the truck. “We knew from our past experiences that these jobs take a lot of time,” Abitz said. “I worked to trim down the time line by increasing the number of people involved. Of course, professional assistance, like that from Toys For Trucks and its suppliers, helped, too. Getting companies like those to pitch in and give us direction helped and I’m sure that it sped the project along as well.” The original plan was to paint the truck bright red, but the students took things in another direction. The truck was finished in black and then painted a flat red over the black. The red was then sanded to let the black show through in certain areas for a “distressed” look. Then, four coats of clear were applied.
