01 ST PAUL APOSTLE SOUTH

During my time at Biuro Ailtiri, I have been involved in the design and development of a new primary school classroom building St Paul Apostle South Catholic Primary School in Endeavour Hills. The design of the building aims to reinvigorate the recreational area of the school grounds with its playful use of lightweight metal, two yellow entrance hoods and smaller colorful hoods on the external walls of all six classrooms. My responsibilities on this project have included assisting the project architect with town planning documents, responding to RFIs, creating schedules, correspondence with consultants and managing BIM modeling and drawings from tender to construction.

The design started with a thorough investigation of the site and topography, and the shape of the building was kept minimalistic so it could seamlessly integrate with the existing buildings while also being a new and fresh addition to the landscape.

Three classroom types were created, each with its own quiet room and distinct colour scheme. Glazing is provided on all walls of the building and throughout the corridor so that enough natural sunlight can enter the building and the transparency could create a feeling of openness and togetherness as these learning spaces become occupied. The building is both spacious and well-contained, and has enough operability that it can be used for a variety of purposes.

The project comprises six new classrooms clad in a Dune® exterior. The building invites students in with two yellow external hooded entrances. Colourful external window boxes mark each classroom and allow students a space to sit, rest and play.

02 NORTHERN BAY COLLEGE

I have been heavily involved in the tender and construction stages of a secondary school project in Geelong. The proposal comprises a full landscaping plan, a general-purpose classroom building, an administration building, a performing arts building and a multipurpose theatre. My responsibilities on this project have included assisting the project architect with town planning documents, responding to RFIs, creating schedules, correspondence with consultants, reviewing shop drawings, managing BIM modeling and drawings and selecting materials and finishes.

of learning experiences for students. The administration building offers a more high-end experience for staff and guests with a warm palette and a striking curved feature ceiling.

The performing arts building provides a space to showcase works and for gatherings, and the multipurpose building has more than enough space for a variety of activities and productions. These buildings are tied together with continuous smooth concrete landscaping, new garden beds and a series of wetland areas for drainage to feed into.

As the project went into the construction stage I was responsible for coordinating plans and clash detection with steel and services, and amendments were made to existing drawings for clarity and rationalisation. This required problem-solving and creative thinking as the complex designs for all four buildings were adjusted and refined.

Each building has its unique style and presence. The general-purpose classroom building features two angled halves with symmetrical quadrants and a grey metal exterior with white accented window frames.

Its high-level ceilings, operable walls and variety of room functions offer a variety 11

03 SQUIDSHELL

‘Squidshell’ is a parametrically designed metallic pavilion that tests the capabilities of metal sheets and robotic molding. Scripting is used to achieve a sequence of successful fluid motions and to create a series of connectors that could be used to connect the panels as they bend. The script is then loaded into a KUKA robotic arm to create prototypes that we could present to the Warrackbaneal Community Garden. The design tests the malleability and strength of metal sheets under continuous pressure.

surfaces appeared visible on the surface and could easily be pushed into the metal by the mechanical robot arm. Each run-through of the final design presented further challenges.

Some parts of the metal sheet that were seemingly fine in Rhino proved to be too deep for the robotic arm to successfully manipulate without either pausing repeatedly or stopping completely requiring a full restart. These limitations were both frustrating and helpful, as the end result was a surface that was aesthetically and functionally very fluid and lightweight.

The design was the result of one week of conceptual work, and three weeks of testing with an on-campus robot. A sleek amphibious pattern was chosen to apply to the metal sheets and was refined in Rhino3D as limitations presented themselves in initial run-throughs. Once a successful initial design was created, SubD commands were used in Rhino to create a single surface that was manipulated in such a way that several

These connectors are both a functional additional and a design choice that would accentuate the initial design concept of fluid repetitions. The design was a fun exercise that tested new technology and striking a balance between the capabilities and limitations of scripting and automation.

04 CRYSTAL FARMS

Crystal Farms is an experimental IBA that harnesses the collective power of an entire community. It poses the question, what would happen if apartments became machines for production rather than consumption?

Many issues will continue to become more prevalent in the coming decades, including climate change, land shortages, housing prices and general health and well-being. In 2050, Burwood will see a significant increase in population and a shift towards higherdensity living. The resulting ecosystem of production, consumption and delivery encourages a feeling of community and engagement by making residents feel that they are part of something much larger than themselves. Not only does the megastructure improve the lives of those living underneath it, but the energy and resources it provides can offer benefits for surrounding suburbs.

The giant sawtooth design also serves a secondary purpose of collecting rainwater and processing it for use within the farming system if needed, and for storing water for recycling and redistribution. A surface area of this size could collect a large amount of water in just a single rainfall, and given Melbourne’s notoriously capricious weather patterns, this could prove incredibly useful, efficient and profitable.

To act like a machine, an IBA would need some sort of mechanism to facilitate large-scale production.

This is where the megastructure comes in. Made out of metal, steel framing, and different shades of polycarbonate, the megastructure is an overarching barrier from the sun that helps foster the growth and harvesting of the plants inside it. It can transform a series of independent towers into an entire ecosystem that inhabitants can enjoy, nurture and distribute beyond their homes.

Q-WATER

05 Q-WATER

Most people are not aware of the true role of water in daily life and the products we use. This project aims to bridge this gap in knowledge by physically placing the audience into the process of recycling water into a consumable product called ‘Q-Water’. The site is the Thornton Quarry in Chicago, whose reservoirs already form part of one of the largest flood protection projects in the world, the ‘Tarp Tunnel’. It intercepts sewage water with a network of water tunnels and treats it at water reclamation plants before being released into waterways.

taken from the western stormwater reservoir and pumped through these stations while being treated appropriately in preparation for consumption by quarry visitors and interested buyers. Visitors will be taken through this process from extraction to commodification in the form of a boardwalk that runs through the different sections of the quarry aptly named the “Stormwater Trail”. It is intended to be an educational journey that also provides a new public interaction with the quarry and the water that is stored inside it.

‘Q-Water’ aims to make issues around water recycling mainstream by turning it into a narrative of consumerism and commodity. It poses the question of whether we would be more likely to be on board with water issues if we could enjoy it as a consumer rather than as a humanitarian. A promotional video was created to advertise ‘Q-Water’ to the public using a series of postcard-style drawings, maps, diagrams, and promotional images.

‘Q-Water’ hijacks this scheme by using its pre-existing infrastructure and water treatment processes to produce a new water product made from stormwater. It consists of six stations placed around the quarry, each representing a stage in water treatment, and within them replicating various water processes involved in manufacturing such as pumping, heating, and cooling. Production sits at the intersection of a major retail and distribution district and the site is easily accessible by public transport. It directly connects to the Metro Water Reclamation Plant via the existing TARP tunnel. Ecosystems and wildlife will benefit with an influx of healthy water and flood control mechanisms granted by the quarry’s infrastructure.
