PROJECT PROFILE
Set in a historically industrial area of St. Petersburg, this adaptive reuse venture sought to revitalize an under-utilized site while propelling forward the popular sport of pickleball. The project consists of 1 new prefabricated metal building and 3 existing warehouses once home to a window film manufacturer and more recently several art studios of the Warehouse Arts District of St. Pete. With the popularity of Pickleball continuing to rise in Florida, so too is the desire for indoor court space. While the club is a short drive from downtown, the Pinellas bike trail traces along the southern edge of the property giving way to furthering the connections to various residents and members.
The complexities of adaptive reuse were in full force during design and pre-demolition of the existing structures. While much of the exterior would remain untouched, the design of the interior sought to merge three spaces into one which in turn alters occupancy types and creates the need for new and up-to-date fire separations. In addition, the floors and exterior walls between warehouses proved to be much of a time capsule, with layers of welded diamond-plate flooring over some unknown foundations, old and uneven wooden floor joists, and shaft wall construction.
• Developed overall design concepts, storytelling and design presentation strategies.
• Planed layouts of project and integrated engineering elements into unified design for client review and approval.
• Selected and presented all furniture, furniture systems, fabrics, equipment (FF&E), color palettes, materials, branding, and decorative lighting

While the challenges of construction and permitting would eventually be resolved with close coordination with the contractor, the client was excited for the possibilities and value that the interior design would bring to the St. Pete Athletic Pickleball Club. The vision was to bring the aesthetics of an old Florida resort combining luxury, leisure, and sport. Vintage motifs of checkerboard flooring, marble veining, splashes of emerald ceramic tiles, and brass art-deco light fixtures transport members from a warehouse to an experience that is both nostalgic and playful. At the entrance of the amenity space, a feature reception desk designed from breezeblock welcomes members to the club and leads to a sophisticated pro-shop adjacent to the clubs fitness room. A large island bar marks the beginning of the club’s dining and lounge space which will host various seating types as well as space for future professional table tennis tournaments.
ST. PETE ATHLETIC PICKLEBALL CLUB
Classic arched bi-folding shutters frame members views from a lounge to the main event pickleball arena. The lounge also incorporates stateof-the-art monitors and projections screens for instant replay and other televised sporting events. The back of the space includes a podcast studio and a smaller breakfast and smoothie bar adorned in coral ceramic tile, deco-patterned marble-look floor tiles, vintage tropical wall murals, custom arched shelving and signage, as well as a blonde wooden tiled backsplash coordinating the palette of each distinct zone to the blonde LVT flooring throughout the space.
ST. PETE ATHLETIC PICKLEBALL CLUB
While the restaurant is open to the public, some of the spaces are exclusive members-only areas. A co-working lounge provides various seating options and opportunities for custom branded wallpaper. Members also experience a billiards room with a perimeter of built-in planters for tropical foliage, a VIP cocktail lounge and members parlor finished with rich wood paneling, moulding accents, and arched alcoves for intimate conversations bejeweled in deep-hues of glazed tile. Custom banquettes, bookshelves, and a gas fireplace provide a moody, speakeasy spirit.
The Pickleball club includes a locker room comprised of gender-neutral shower rooms, saunas, and dark wooden laminate lockers. Across a corridor sits a private conference room, staff offices, and a full-service commercial kitchen.
As for athletics, St. Pete Athletic members have access to 14 pickleball courts and 2 padel courts. The client plans to host tournaments and events throughout the year. The remaining 2 existing buildings and the prefabricated metal building house the court space and also provide areas to gather, dine, and spectate courtside.

PROJECT PROFILE
Rounding out a new neighborhood created by apartment and semi-suite style housing and fulfilling a master plan goal (all designed by Ayers Saint Gross), this new dining commons replaces an outdated option to further enhance the student experience. The siting prioritizes green space and open space connections, linking the dining commons to the residence halls and the arts walk.

The building architecture references others on campus while forging its own identity with a statement roof form. The form of the building artfully accommodates the preservation of mature oak trees on the site which provides a more intimate, exterior courtyard for outdoor dining. This interior courtyard is framed by glazing on the building which helps to blur the lines between exterior and interior space.
Our goal with Cunniffe Commons was to diverge from the traditional cafeteria design of the past and create the experience of an urban food hall, a popular dining trend in American cities in recent years. The footprint of the building angles and pivots around existing grand trees asking students to meander throughout this dining hall. With a nonlinear path, the experience becomes diverse from sight to sound and even smell. The placement of dining platforms is intentionally “scattered” across the plan. While one end of the dining hall is open with high ceilings, surrounded by natural light, brighter finishes, greater access to Digital media/audio, and various seating groups that encourage social interactions, the other end of the space is cozier and tucked away for peaceful, solo dining. In addition to various locations, each platform has their own unique design and branding creating a neighborhood of various micro restaurants. Just as Ringling students create new art every day, they also create their own dining experience each day at Cunniffe Commons.

The Interior Design of our previous residence hall project, Bridge Hall, was greatly influenced by the nature of the building site and its surrounding habitat. Imagery of palm trees informed the selection of a bright green color palette and material patterns reminiscent of angled palm fronds. While palm trees and live oaks are abundant on Ringling’s campus, the Floridian ecosystem includes a plethora of natural beauty. I searched for new inspirational imagery of coastal Florida such as the bayou and mangroves that drape the borders between land and water. I often though about organic branching patterns, layers, and how inlets and bayous transition to deeper, open water. My vision boards included photos of oceanscapes, waves, and underwater snapshots that one might find off the Floridan shores that depict vibrant, deep hues and natural layers.
The Underclass Housing has a series of repeating residential spaces from level to level. The Interior color palette progresses from the dark navy blues of the ocean floor (the building’s ground level) to warmer violets and pops of bright corals (upper levels). With the desire for a hip, industrial style, accents of ocean-patinaed and dark bronzed metal appear in architectural features from the oxidized metal-look tiles that clad the building lounge booth niches, a perforated elevator lobby ceiling, lounge accent lighting, and even the unit entry sconces. Underclass housing also features blackboards at each unit entry and custom LVT flooring depicting a collage of warm, deconstructed oriental rug motifs for added color and residential style.

PROJECT PROFILE
Ayers Saint Gross is the design architect for a new residence hall, Tubman-Laws Hall, at Delaware State University in Dover, Delaware. This was a pursuit with student-housing developer American Campus Communities. Late in the design development phase, the client requested an additional 100-seat dining program to be included with their new student housing. During initial Interior Design discussions, Faculty and students described the no-longer existing diner in town that students used to frequent. This new space would be a modern take on the American retro hangout. Warm, medium-toned wood accents, reminiscent of mid-century modern designs, clad a custom wall of colorful dining booths. Additionally, bold plaid wallcoverings, graphic hexagonal floor tiles, custom-colored globe pendants, and small furniture detailing like aluminum fluted table edges all contribute to this nostalgic dining design.

PROJECT PROFILE
Our ASG team designed a contemporary residence hall with apartment-style units for upperclass students as well as a ground-level project room and a series of lobby and lounge spaces connect by a central stair.
Inspired by the black and white checkered floors of Old-world hotels, I searched for modern-day finishes that delivered the same crisp contrast. A white terrazzo floor and black mullions deliver this concept in our feature lobby. Juxtaposed to our black and white finishes are bold, vibrant colors that appear on each floor. While the first floor debuts a leafy green hue, the second floor is accented by fuchsia and the third floor by aqua. Each floor’s identifying color appears in painted ceilings, apartment entry glass boards, kitchen backsplashes, as well as furniture upholstery. Additionally, I wanted to translate the natural Floridian canopy into the built environment. A natural wood ceiling with angular patterns and fractal shapes was born. In the same way that light appears between palm fronds, I incorporated linear lighting in oblique arrangements. To complete the concept, above the wooden “fronds”, there is the surprise of a green painted ceiling.
Once the angular patterns took root in the main lobby, it expanded throughout the building in the form of angled bulkheads down the corridors, the faceted carpet and LVT tile in public spaces, and the hexagonal backsplashes in the apartment kitchens.

The location and climate of Erie, PA is cold and gloomy during the winter semesters. As a result, the Interior design consisted of a warm, colorful finish palette. Natural walnut tones live in the wooden floors and specialty ceilings of the building lounge as well as kitchen and student room millwork. We mixed various vibrant colors throughout the furniture upholstery and accent paint colors. PSU also considered Trippe Hall to be an opportunity to experiment with furniture typology and create new standards for their future interior spaces.

PROJECT PROFILE
The Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center is a model of student-centered design. The project included the renovation and restoration of Holzapfel Hall. The design team rehabilitated the exterior wall assembly, restored the original single-pane, double-hung windows, and carefully restored the slate roof and metal cornice. The interior design was inspired by the agora, a central public gathering space in ancient Greek city-states. Largescale classrooms clad in warm wood slates float in open and bright collaborative spaces as students walk between informal spaces including gathering areas, study rooms, team rooms, break out space, conference and training rooms, four cafes, and two green roofs. While the open space is a field of crisp and neutrally-colored materials, the furniture design was considered an additional layer of objects floating in space with their bold and youthful upholstery. An iconic, red central stair establishes wayfinding through a doubleheight atrium. Overall the sectional quality of design creates lofty, light-filled volumes, suggestive of higher learning.
