OYSTER BAY

This new construction home was designed for a cafe-owning couple with diverse needs: one partner had full mobility while the other used a prosthetic, necessitating compliance with ADA requirements Personal preferences were taken into account, such as a dislike for the color green and a fondness for soft textures Dual ovens were added for one partner’s love of baking for their shared cafe in town, along with ample counter space for working

Additionally, the couple requested an area for summer entertaining and a dedicated space for recording their podcast on coffee, leading to a design that incorporated warm coffee tones touched with blues for color Considerat ons were made to allow the couple to age in place

Students were tasked w th remodeling a kitchen to code using Fisher-Paykel appliances for a blended fam ly with two children. The design had to maintain integrity of home’s midcentury modern style and history

Homeowners commuted to and from Manhattan and cooked for friends and family on weekends so a kitchen with ample workspace and full-size appliances were a must The couple also had two children and preferred a layout that allowed them to join in the kitchen while parents cooked

East and West walls could not be modified.

LATTICE BUILD

Final outcome: Create a 3Dimensional volume / structural form

Students were not given information about what came next in the project or where it was going to ensure creativity was not limited by desired future outcome

Conceptualize structure starting with geometric string form, then finding planes within string, then adding volume. Begin with single 6 in x 6 in cube during conceptualization Then create a lattice of three 6 in x 6 in cubes totaling 18 in wide x 18 in tall x 18 in deep in which form was repeated

Culminated in a jury of world-renowned designers and architects from Yale, Harvard and other professional backgrounds.

REQUIREMENTS

Student must not consider a desired final outcome

Only real geometric forms considered to keep project on linear track and w thin realm of what is realistic within structural design. Keep design as simple as possible; prevent over-des gn
