PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

October 2016

Business Outlook

Making a Difference In mid-September, your Chamber held its bi-annual membership event, a focused effort to spread the word about what the Chamber does for its members and the community. We had nearly 100 volunteers who helped tell the Chamber story to companies not currently members and who went out and personally welcome those that joined. It was a high-energy, fun event with a serious message about how your Chamber makes a difference for the businesses in Joplin. Thank you to all of the event chairmen, captains and team members who helped make this a success! One of the things we learned, or maybe I should say relearned, from the event is it never hurts to recap all of the things we do in a brief form. A lot of what your Chamber does gets captured in an event; for example, the announcement of an expanding company or a networking opportunity like First Rob O’Brian, President Friday Coffee. And, not every member has an interest in everything we do. Chamber members cover a broad array, from single-person shops to major corporations, from social service organizations and churches to companies that do business in Joplin but don’t have a physical presence here. So with that in mind, here is a brief recap of the areas in which your Chamber makes a difference. First, we are an economic development-driven Chamber. By that, I mean we are focused on helping companies expand and attracting new companies to Joplin and the surrounding region. We work on providing local firms with support on expanding. We market Joplin and its region for new business. For local firms, this support includes providing information on the market area such as household numbers and incomes, and workforce information down to how many people are employed in a specific job. We also work with them on possible state and/or local incentives to support their growth. Of course, there is our attraction effort. When Heartland Pet Foods invests nearly $100 million and promises to create 130 jobs (and now has over 160), that’s great news and a strong economic boost during construction and in operation. When HS Baking buys the old Annie’s plant and plans to have 60 employees, that’s good news. In fact, HS plans to double to 120 employees by the end of three years. And Owens Corning, a 104-job, nearly $90-million operation, opens later this year. But did you know those don’t just “fall in our lap”? We spend substantial time marketing the community and region and talking to companies and site consultants (who drive a lot of these projects). We do that to keep Joplin’s name out there so when projects like the above come up, we get considered. Second, we are an opportunity organization. We create opportunities for our members to do business through our events. These are opportunities for members to meet each other and talk about their respective businesses, promote themselves and hear what others are doing. For all of the use of technology, we are all human and we like to do business with people we know and trust. Third, we work on community, state and federal legislative actions that we believe help our businesses or that could hurt them. Just this year, we campaigned for a one-quarter cent sales tax increase for a new county juvenile facility and some renovations at the historic county courthouse in Carthage. We don’t necessarily like tax increases; I don’t know anyone who does. But sometimes it’s the right thing to do. With the juvenile center, the county is currently transporting our young citizens to Springfield or farther. So we could spend a lot of money and staff moving these young men and women around, or we could build the new center, keeping dollars paid for services and staff here in our community, keeping a county workforce downtown and adding construction dollars back into our area. It’s the right thing. We also work on state legislation. We set our general agenda of issues and inform our legislators of those going into each session. However, we also weigh in on specific items. Last year, our staff testified on two items related to economic development and taxation. We also co-sponsor, with our sister chambers, four Eggs & Issues events during the session so our members can meet with state legislators and tell them directly what they think. Finally, we have meetings with our Congressional representatives, encouraging members to attend so they can hear first hand what is going on and provide their own input to our congressmen, senators and staff. We also have weighed in through the US Chamber by joining a consortium of state and local chambers opposing two items: the Clean Power Plan and the Department of Labor overtime rules. Both of these have a negative impact on businesses and residents, unless they are changed. Both are in litigation now because of the collective efforts nationally of which your Chamber is a part. So whether you’re using your Chamber membership to get direct opportunities for your business, you benefit from new construction and new jobs, or you just want someone to make opportunities for you to talk to those who make the rules and regulations, your investment is helping the Chamber make a difference. Our staff and your fellow members who volunteer on the board of directors and committees are doing that every week, 52 weeks a year; making a difference for nearly a hundred years. 3

Message to the Network from Chairman Brent Baker Better United! Recently, I have been thinking about what we can do to build unity in our community. Many of you have been involved in discussions over the last few years about how to improve Joplin, typically with the goal of solving problems or fixing something we think is broken. Often times, I am guilty of looking at problems and not offering solutions. It is far too easy to blame people for the problems without looking at the process creating the problem, or worse yet, without ever giving those very people the opportunity to hear my complaint. Most of us are genuinely interested in making things better at work, home and in our community. So I have a question about how many problems we can solve by discussing them with everyone around us while not including those who can solve the problem. Actually, what I planned to discuss was gossip and unity. In order to create unity in any group, company or community, you have to build trust. Gossip is one of the fastest ways to destroy trust. Dave Ramsey defines gossip as discussing anything negative with someone who can’t help solve the problem. There will always be negative stuff happening in any group. The challenge is to discuss the issue with someone who can solve the problem. Don’t complain about your phone bill to the water

company; they can’t help! As this relates to our community, I challenge you to get involved in the many opportunities to have your voice heard and know that your voice will be heard. Within YPN, you have been given a platform to make a difference in the community. Within the community, there are many opportunities to get involved on boards that make a difference. Feel free to contact the YPN team listed above to find out how to get involved (contact me directly at bbaker@empiredistrict.com). Either way, find a way to get your issues to the people who can make a difference and give them a chance. Let’s be better united because together we are better. As Henry Ford said, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”

Innovate Your Way to Success

By Karen Bradshaw, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University growing? Do you anticipate regulations that may impact your business? If so, what actions can you take to deal with these threats? Assess your competitors to find out about their products/services, prices and organizational culture. How will your industry marketplace affect your company now and in the future?

"Innovation opportunities do not come with the tempest but with the rustling of the breeze." - Peter Drucker The future success of companies usually depends upon their ability to innovate. In our dynamic business world, a firm needs to continually concentrate on new ways to improve. One way is to improve a business process to increase your productivity by being more efficient. Your company could be offering new products and services to meet your customers’ needs. Maybe you are trying to add more value to your existing products and services in order to differentiate your company from your competitors. Innovation can assist your company with reducing costs, increasing efficiency, being more competitive, establishing new business relationships and increasing profitability. Having a system of innovation is a creative process your company can utilize to help it grow. Innovative ideas can come from your employees, managers, consultants, suppliers, customers, market research, the internet or other sources. Future development in your company comes from being able to examine ideas and clarify which ones will benefit your firm. You need to have a system to analyze and implement these ideas. Since each company has its own unique culture, you may want to consider how your company can develop a culture that rewards innovation and progress. What are the values and goals of your firm? How will you reward people who influence and contribute to creative ideas and actions that influence the innovation culture you may be trying to develop in your firm? For you to be successful, you will need to encourage people to learn from failure and promote creative ideas and variety in choices. Following are some ideas you can use to encourage a culture of innovation within your business: Analyze the Marketplace On an ongoing basis, research your industry to make certain you are in a growth industry, not a declining industry. Is the size of the potential market for your goods and services

18

Utilize Technology On a timely and planned basis, examine trends on the internet and social media tools in order to develop new ideas. Clearly having a method of identifying opportunities, while making the best use of time, and meeting your company goals is useful. How will you identify ways you can use technology such as suitable software and hardware that will be beneficial? Is there new equipment or new forms of technology that could make your firm more productive? Develop Strong Communication Networks In order to foster innovation within your company, you will need to develop a strong system of effective communication not only within your company, but with individuals and organizations outside your company. This allows people with different types of knowledge to communicate with each other and gather the feedback they need to proceed with their best ideas. Develop a system for communicating with your customers by listening to their opinions and observing their purchase behaviors. Plan for Innovation Develop objectives and a strategic vision of innovation for your firm. As you are developing your innovation strategy, think about how you can create conditions that allow innovation to become part of everyday discussions among fellow employees. As you plan for expansion, hire innovative thinkers and plan to have the resources and training available to excel at their positions. Develop financial plans and goals to be able to support your vision. Create a Culture of Trust You will find it difficult to get people in your firm to suggest new ideas, develop new systems and risk failure if they are not encouraged, trained, rewarded and supported by the management of the company. Truly innovative companies have a significant level of trust among their employees and managers. Have processes and events that capture ideas like suggestion boxes, brainstorming meetings, team meetings, newsletters and intranets for sharing information. Remember, everyone in your company is responsible for innovation. They should all feel comfortable and encouraged to develop new ideas and be innovative. As Henry Ford said, "I am looking for a lot of people who have an infinite capacity to not know what can't be done." Innovate your way to success!
