PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Happy Anniversary, Happy Holidays and Thank You, Members Since October 1917, your Chamber of Commerce has been the voice of business for Joplin and its trade area. For 100 years, the organization has led the way on numerous issues for local growth and success and played a direct role in the economic development of this community. The successes of your Chamber are all around Joplin; 100 years of success and yet, we didn’t have a big 100th birthday party in October. In early December, we typically do an open house, just a way to celebrate the holidays and ROB O’BRIAN, invite you, our members, to come by and chat with our great staff members as well as with each PRESIDENT other. It is a networking event, but one that is focused on our Chamber “family” and not about the business we all do most of the weeks of each year. Finally, there is Thanksgiving in this month of November. When you live and work here in the Joplin area, there’s a lot to be thankful for. We have a wonderful location, easy transportation access, a mild four-season climate, good schools, lots of amenities and a growing economy. And we have our family, friends and colleagues that support us and the community organizations that help make sure everyone has something for which to be thankful. For us here at the Chamber, we are thankful for all of this and for you, our members, who provide input to our programs and support to make positive changes in our area. So, put three months of things together and we decided to have one vast party to celebrate 100 years, the holidays and our members. This “tri-party” could have had some super creative name, but really it is exactly what it is: A chance to say thank you and happy holidays to our members and to ask you to join in a celebration of 100 years of Joplin Chamber success. Along with our sponsor, KSN, the Chamber is making this a fun lunch November 29 at our office. There will be fun, food, games and prizes, especially with the KSN bingo game. Come join us November 29 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Chamber office. We’d love to see you and say thank you for being a member. Another way we’re looking at supporting our members is in the search for talent. The economic recovery has been strong enough long enough that it is getting difficult to find qualified employees. It’s not just a problem in Joplin, but one that is national. Every place we look, communities are trying to grow the pipeline of good workforce internally and figure out ways to attract talent to an area. With no place in the U.S. having a tremendously high unemployment rate, the old days of just raiding a place with a lot of laid-off workers is not a productive strategy; there is not “a place” to raid. Likewise, people are more focused on family and stability and less likely to move for a job, even a very good one, without assurances the job AND the community will be a good fit. So while your company may be a great place, those potential hires also want to know about this community and why they should move here. We have great resources, including our Community Profile, which can help you “sell” opportunities in this area. As we go into 2018, we have a more aggressive plan to recruit talent to the area, talent that typically has a proven track record of strong work ethic, desire to succeed and key basic skills to help make your firm successful. That talent is military veterans. We have a great committee (which is open to anyone interested) that has been working on this for several months. The committee has provided input into a brochure any company can use to help attract the talent. The brochure is backed up with a website with more detailed information on why this is such a great area for veterans to find work and life success. And we have pinpointed several military installations for direct contact with their offices that handle the transition of serving personnel into the civilian world. One thing we believe is that the labor force in our region is generally tapped out. While there are always people who are seeking a better job, to grow our workforce in the near future, we need to tell Joplin’s story and go after a base of potential employees who already have great basic skills and may be looking for that place to call home after being in postings around the U.S. and globe. We have a new jobs module that will be up soon on our website, and any Chamber member can post a job. But if you really want to get engaged in attracting top talent to our community (and your company), please give me a call and let me know of your interest. This talent recruiting is just one way we are helping our members. But we, in turn, cannot do this and so many other things without your support. And, we definitely want to say thank you, so come by November 29. Our 100 years of success would not have been possible without you, and you continue to fuel our success.

2017-2018 Executive Committee

Presented by

Message to the Network from Chairman Ryan S. Melton Close your eyes and think of the phrase, "The best leader I have ever been around." Who was the first person who came to mind? Awwww, I’m honored you thought of me… All kidding aside, you are a leader. You are a leader whether your title at work says so or not. You are a leader because no matter who you are or where you are in life, people are looking to you to lead them. As humans, we have an innate need to be led. As a leader, you will either be someone’s inspiration, much like the person you thought of earlier, or you will be someone’s example of “what not to do." Built into the mission of YPN is to “Develop” young professionals, and we are continually striving to build great leaders in this community. What if the Joplin region was known as a leader factory? I believe integrity is a cornerstone for any highcapacity leader. Integrity is a personal quality of fairness that we all aspire to, unless you're a dishonest, immoral scoundrel, of course. One way to describe integrity is, “Integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way." It's a personality trait we admire since it means a person has a moral compass that doesn't waver. It literally means having "wholeness" of character, just as an integer is a "whole number" with no fractions. There is a difference between behaviors and characteristics. The worst people on earth can act with integrity every now and then. People who act with integrity consistently have it as a characteristic. Here is my challenge to you. Look at yourself in the figurative mirror of life and evaluate whether you are a leader with integrity occasionally or consistently. Your legacy as a person and a leader will be determined by what you do consistently, not just occasionally. Spend the next days, weeks and months building a consistency that people learn to expect from you. This ultimately will build trust, and trust is the doorway to meaningful relationships that can change the world. Ryan S. Melton, Director of Service Excellence Freeman Health System

By Karen Bradshaw, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

“The best way to predict the future is to create it."-Peter Drucker Entrepreneurship is important to the U.S. economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, the United States currently has about 28 million small businesses (with less than 500 employees). They generated about 65 percent of net new jobs in the U.S. since 1995. Small businesses employ over 50 percent of the working population. About 29 percent of U.S. firms are minority owned, 36 percent are women-owned, and veterans own 9 percent. The entrepreneurial mindset is strong among youth in America. According to Ewing Marion Foundation, individuals 20 to 34 years old accounted for 25 percent of new entrepreneurs in 2015. Providing encouragement and educational opportunities to our future entrepreneurs is vital to the U.S. economy and to consumers that will benefit from a variety of diverse new products and services. Over the years, there have been numerous studies done to survey the interest in youth entrepreneurship. For example, the America’s Small Business Development Centers worked with The Center for Generational Kinetics to conduct a study in 2017 to examine Millennial attitudes about entrepreneurship. Millennials were born between 1977 and 1995. The Generational Kinetics study found that 38 percent of Millennials have worked in a startup company. It also found that 30 percent of Millennials currently own a small business and that 26 percent are able to live off the income generated by their small business. Another interesting discovery of this study was that 62 percent of Millennials said they had a dream business in mind that they would like to start, and 49 percent hope to start a business within the next three years. About 61 percent thought owning a business would offer better security than working for someone else. Millennials realize they need assistance to be successful. The study indicated 74 percent of Millennials would be more likely to start a business if they knew where to get assistance, and with the right resources, 59 percent would start their businesses within the next year. About 55 percent of Americans consider accessing money as the most difficult aspect of starting a business.

Another national survey, “The Millennial Mind Goes to Work,” was conducted in 2014 by Bentley University's PreparedU Project. This study found 66 percent of Millennials want to start their own business. Respondents believed flexible work schedules make workplaces more productive for Millennials. They also thought health-care benefits were more important than frequent promotions and pay increases. A 2016 report from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation describes Millennial entrepreneurs' attitudes. According to this report, Millennials believe the ability to quickly disseminate information is important to successful marketing. The report reveals Millennials are more conscious about the social responsibility actions of their employees or employers. Millennials will actively seek workers and workplaces with the same ethics and ideals in order to maintain an acceptable worklife balance. In order to inspire young people, Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is celebrated during one week each November. Thousands of GEW events and competitions will be held in 170 countries to encourage and educate millions of young people around the world about entrepreneurship. MSSU has participated in GEW since it began in 2008, and will offer the following events in 2017.

Why Not? Get Connected Through Leadership Joplin 2018

Alex Gandy did….. Through being involved in Leadership Joplin, I have been challenged to grow as a leader and community member. As a person who did not grow up in the Joplin area (I am originally from St. Louis), being a participant of this program gave me the opportunity to take a deeper look at our community. Not only did I gain more understanding of the diverse businesses and organizations within our community, I came in contact with members of our community who are truly passionate about what they do and where they are located. These encounters and conversations with passionate community members made a lasting impact within my professional network. Leadership Joplin does not simply introduce you to the community; it connects you to the community. I have been able to better serve my employer because of the professional skills I have gained through Leadership Joplin. Moreover, I am more connected and involved in my community because of the relationships I developed through Leadership Joplin. Alex Gandy, Missouri Southern State University 2017 LJ Class Speaker - Alumni

The Leadership Joplin program provides a foundation for participants to expand their current leadership roles in the community. During the six-month course, class members develop a broad appreciation of our unique quality of life as well as an understanding of the complex opportunities they face as stewards of the community. Do you aspire to become an outstanding leader? Are you interested in cultivating productive professional relationships and a professional presence? Then LJ 2018 is the program for you!

Begins in January │ 12 Sessions │ Concludes in June │ Motive Matters Color Code Training

The Leadership Joplin program was awarded the Programs & Campaigns Award of Excellence by the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri (CCEM) in 2015. This will be our 35th year with more than 925 alumni graduating from the program. 18

business outlook NOVEMBER 2017 Each year during EXPO Business After Hours we host an incredible live and silent auction to raise funds for the JACC Foundation that provides education and professional development through programs such as Leadership Joplin, Tomorrow’s Leaders Today and the Young Professionals Network. We dream BIG at JACC, so we’ve set our goal for 2018 to be the

BIGGEST auction in EXPO History…and we’re going to need

help. We have started gathering donations for the auction this year and we are looking for businesses and organizations to partner with who can provide us with items to help us meet our goal. We are looking for items of all price ranges, small to large in order to provide things that will appeal to all demographics. However, our Auction team has provided a “wish list” of items that have been a proven success in the past and we would love to see these items be the talk of the Auction...think BIG with us!
