MAY 2018 – 101st Annual Banquet Edition

BUSINESS OUTLOOK Dear Chamber Members: As you know, Rob O’Brian, who has led our Chamber so well for the last 23 years, recently resigned his position as Chamber President. We wish Rob well in his new endeavor and thank him for his leadership. Your Chamber Board of Directors met Friday, April 5 for our annual retreat, and announced the appointment of Mark Turnbull as Interim President of the Chamber. Mark has been on the Chamber staff for six years, first serving as Director of Regional Strategy for the Joplin Regional Partnership and most recently as Chief Operating Officer. We have full confidence in Mark’s ability to lead the staff and membership through the transition in leadership as we begin the search for a new President. The Board is forming a search committee that will include Board, staff and key stakeholders. I will keep you informed as we move through the search process, and welcome any questions you have as we move forward. On a personal note, I want to thank the Chamber staff for their hard work and commitment through this time of transition. They are a great resource for all of us and will continue the excellent programs and services you expect from your Chamber. Best regards,

7 Tips for Increasing Leadership Effectiveness by KAREN BRADSHAW, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” –BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Be prepared to pivot. In the dynamic business world of 2018, leaders must have contingency plans for their organizations and be able to adapt or pivot in order to deal with an ever-changing environment. The global economy that produces many opportunities due to unique technologies and innovations can be awe-inspiring. How will your organization keep up with this rapid pace of change? Organizations must be prepared to innovate in order to succeed, not just survive. Your organization will greatly benefit from having a business plan you follow; however, you will occasionally want to adjust your plans and strategies in order to meet your customers’ needs and deal with changes in the environment. Continue to educate your employees and yourself. Hire employees with positive, cooperative attitudes. Develop an on-going program that promotes and rewards superior customer service. This will help to reduce negative customer service issues, since employees will know how to treat customers in the first place. Be professional and teach your employees how to be professionals. If you are striving to have a technologically advanced and innovative firm, then invest in equipment, software, and training programs so you and your employees will be able to grow your company. Model the behavior you expect from employees. Honesty is the best policy. If you want your employees to be honest and trustworthy, then you need to set a good example. If you are expecting your employees to offer great customer service, obtain feedback from customers, and demonstrate innovative improvements in your company, then you will need to model the behavior you want them to emulate. If you want employees to have a servant leader mentality and treat customers and fellow employees with kindness and respect, then you will have to lead by example. The ability to modify your behavior to reflect the actions you want your employees to demonstrate should assist you in successfully operating your business. Listen to your customers; be customer focused. According to Peter Drucker, “The purpose of business is to create and keep a customer.” Be responsive and communicate with customers in a timely basis. Utilize your website, email surveys, and phone surveys to find out what customers want and need. What methods do your customers want to use to contact you (online chat, Facebook, email, etc.)? What is the most effective way for you to communicate with your customers? Train your employees to provide timely responses to customer emails and phone calls. Contact your customers and ask them how pleased they were with the level of service they received and what they liked about your company. Successful entrepreneurs are able to identify unrealized opportunity by satisfying the desires of a specific target market of customers. Create a culture of innovation for your organization. Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” If you want your organization to be customer focused, you will want to create a “culture” that promotes great customer service. You must also offer products your customers want to purchase. You will want to develop a method of surveying customers’ opinions. If you want to have a culture of innovation, you should offer benefits, flexible work schedules, reward systems, and opportunities for improving employee skills, which will encourage and enable your employees to be innovative. Remember what Benjamin Franklin said, “Happiness depends more on the inward disposition of mind than on outward circumstances.” Following is an upcoming event that can provide you with valuable information to improve your leadership skills.

Leadercast Be a part of an extraordinary event that will make you an even better leader. Leadercast Live is the largest, one-day leadership event on the planet, with more than 100,000 current visionaries and future world-changers attending each year. BUSINESS OUTLOOK

Message from the YPN Coordinator April is a very interesting time in the Chamber world. On the one hand we are putting on events meant to acknowledge all of the great work our members and our programs do, and on the other we are planning for the upcoming year. This is a wonderful time to reflect on the impact that YPN has had on the community and will continue to have moving forward. At our YPN Annual Celebration, we honored individuals who have made great contributions to YPN since its inception, YP of the Year Jake Heisten and outgoing chair Ryan Melton. Both Ryan and Jake were instrumental in establishing many of the programs that make YPN great, and a pillar of our community. We also honored newer members who jumped in with both feet and made a big impact in a relatively short amount of time, Rookie of the Year Dana Pim and Service Award winner Emily Marion. Dana and Emily are great representatives of the vibrant membership who continue to make things happen in our workgroups, and at our various events. A great example is Dress to Impress, where over 320 MSSU students received clothing. During the executive committee retreat, Jerrod Hogan led the committee through a series of strategic planning exercises. The exercises led them to identify what YPN is doing well and where it can improve. A great example of the former is the professional development events the network puts on. An example of the latter is identifying the need to have more family friendly social events. The executive committee walked away with a lot of excitement and energy moving forward. We are now looking at short-term wins to help achieve these big picture goals. In short, in the month of April, we have seen reasons to be tremendously proud of YPN’s accomplishments. We have also seen reasons to be even more excited about YPN’s future. This has inspired me and I hope it inspires you. Be sure to stay tuned for what this amazing group does this year! —Brian Kelly

MAY 2018 – 101st Annual Banquet Edition

The world is looking for great leaders to follow. In order to become those leaders to the outside, we have to lead ourselves first. We must walk the walk. It’s like the flight attendants tell us - please remember to wear your own oxygen mask before helping others. In 2018, Leadercast will be focusing on that very concept. How do you lead yourself effectively? How do you develop your core principles and values so that your leadership is an outpouring of your innermost self? And how much more will those who follow you benefit from your leadership when you lead yourself well? At Leadercast Live in 2018, the speakers who take the stage will inspire you to lead yourself, so you can lead your families, your organization and your communities well. Announced speakers: Andy Stanley, Joe Torre, Jen Bricker, Mae Jemison, Ian Cron, Tripp Crosby, Michael Hyatt, Carey Lohrenz, Dr. Jim Loehr and Catherine Hoke.
