PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I would like to introduce a few of our 2019 initiatives. We need a structural improvement to Joplin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. The chamber is in discussions with MSSU, the Small Business Development Center, and the Downtown Joplin Alliance about combining our capacities and programs. By collaborating, this will provide dynamic workspaces, education, business mentoring, and networking opportunities in the form of a unified “Innovation Hub”. This will allow technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship to thrive. We have a bold, progressive vision for the Joplin Chamber as a storyteller. We are going to produce a robust online business news publication and a spotlight video series covering Joplin businesses, projects, and events that highlight the “New Joplin” that is emerging. We want to tell YOUR stories and celebrate our entrepreneurs and business leaders. And possibly add a podcast series and additional multimedia projects that will both communicate business news and education, while lifting Joplin’s online profile. Our community also needs a Joplin Toby Teeter website similar to Bentonville’s https://becausebentonville.com to explain why someone should President move their family or business to Joplin. Likewise, the Crossroads Industrial Park needs a website Joplin Area Chamber to communicate its value proposition to manufacturing and distribution companies while of Commerce telling our current tenants’ success stories. Once we shift to this multimedia storytelling approach, the chamber will launch a cooperative ad campaign that will slice these media assets into highlight reels for each target demographic. We will remarket to those who are actively considering Joplin relocation, either for themselves and their family or moving their entire company to the Joplin area. Utilizing remarketing tracking pixels to capture and target these prospects on stakeholder web pages such as the medical school application process, Crossroads Industrial Park property listings, Mercy and Freeman physician recruitment pages, MSSU’s open faculty positions, and so on. We will target a database of site selectors with our pro-Joplin messaging. Simultaneous to their decision making process, prospects will see the “Joplin story” unfold on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and the remainder of both Google and Facebook’s ad networks. For example, prospective med students will see scenes from wine shares, bike trails, and coffee shops. While a national manufacturing company will learn more about our workforce development and our industrial park amenities. These initiatives will help cultivate, celebrate, and grow our dynamic business community.

…building a bridge between employers and tomorrow’s workforce Established by the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2018, this service helps Missouri students gain valuable career experience while simultaneously giving employers better access to the talent they need for tomorrow’s economy. Missouri Intern Connect is a product of the Missouri Chamber’s Missouri 2030 strategic initiative. The research behind Missouri 2030 uncovered that workforce was one of the main concerns for our state’s employers — many organizations were struggling to find the talented workers they needed. In addition, the state overall was experiencing a troubling trend: Many young workers were choosing to leave Missouri for opportunities elsewhere. Missouri Intern Connect addresses these issues by providing an easy way for students to connect with valuable internship experiences inside Missouri. These experiences give young people a connection to employers and lead to job opportunities which provide a powerful incentive to stay in Missouri. Several organizations have been instrumental in creating Missouri Intern Connect, including these supporters: MU Extension — Business Development Program Missouri Department of Higher Education Union Pacific PHRMA

Citizens can now easily connect with the City of Joplin through the free SeeClickFix mobile app. With this new app and web tools, residents can now quickly report local issues to City staff along with pictures, videos, specific descriptions, locations, and more - all of which is valuable information needed to get the job done efficiently. In addition, the SeeClickFix platform provides City officials with a centralized management system to address issues from creation to resolution while engaging citizens throughout the process. “This tool offers a stream-lined method to contact us about an issue in a neighborhood, along a street or anywhere in our community,” said City Manager Sam Anselm. “It’s a simple process that all they have to do when they see a concern is click on this app and complete the questions that will relay the details to us. Our staff will be notified and begin working on the solution.” In addition to reporting problems, SeeClickFix allows citizens to view, comment on, and vote to fix problems submitted by their neighbors. Citizens can

even create their own “watch areas” to receive notifications about all the issues reported in their community, enabling them to follow the progress of all service requests, not just the ones they report. “With more than 35 square miles in Joplin, citizens often serve as the eyes and ears of our neighborhoods. Now they can contact City staff about a developing pot hole, a streetlight that’s gone out, or other matters through this app making it more convenient for both them and our staff,” said Anselm. “This engages our residents, so they have a voice in building a better community.” Citizens can also utilize SeeClickFix through a computer or other device by going to the City’s website at www.joplinmo.org and clicking the “Report a Problem” icon on the home page. SeeClickFix offers anonymity, with first-time users of SeeClickFix registering a screen name and password. From there, they can easily log on and make their report without a lot of unnecessary screens. The SeeClickFix mobile app is available for download on Android at https:// play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.seeclickfix. ma.android&hl=en or iPhone at https://itunes.apple.com/ us/app/seeclickfix/id322000552?mt=8. Adult guests are invited to attend the mixand-mingle dance hosted by VFW #534, Joplin, following the banquet. For the past month, the topic of servant leadership has been on my mind. I know there are many people who think servant leadership pertains to a specific person who leads a group to help those in need, which was my mindset at one time. This was partly because I associated service and charity together. What I began to discover was that most of the articles that I had read never really listed leadership or being the head of an organization as a characteristic to this philosophy. It was almost as if the leadership aspect was a byproduct to being a servant in any organization. One article listed these characteristics as:

empathy persuasiveness

LISTENING STEWARDSHIP

CONCEPTUALIZATION GROWTH OF OTHERS With servant leadership in mind, I kept trying to come up with a thought to help me keep this topic in mind with my actions. What I came up with was the question, “What can I do to help make others successful?” This was simple and to the point. Also, it made the distinction between people and organizations. In discussing this topic with a friend of mine, he led me to read about Dave Roemer. Roemer was the President of Six Flags St. Louis before partially retiring in 2016. He served in several roles at Six Flags and displayed many characteristics of a servant leader. It was not uncommon to find him walking about the park with a broom and dustpan in hand. He always seemed to have time to build rapport with all the staff and listen to their concerns. Under Roemer’s leadership, it seemed that he understood that for an organization to be successful, the staff had to be successful. The park during his tenure experienced expansion as several new rides were constructed and attendance at the park grew. I feel servant leadership is a very simple concept. The difficulty comes when it is put into practice and creating a discipline in it. Who in your organization are you asking, “What can I do to help you be successful?”

ESRI Business Analyst Online provides interesting market potential data that indicates purchasing patterns for Joplin trade area residents as compared to total U.S. households. For instance, according to ESRI about 49 percent of adults in Joplin trade area households believe that buying American goods is important to them, whereas only 40 percent of all U.S. households believe this statement. In 2018, the U.S. median household income was $58,100, as compared to only $44,119 for residents in the Joplin trade area. ESRI projects the Joplin trade area’s median household income in 2023 to be $50,000, compared to an estimate of $66,727 for U.S. households. It is not surprising that 30.7 percent of households in the Joplin trade area believe that price is usually more important than brand name when purchasing products. Also, over 20 percent of Joplin trade area households usually use coupons for brands they often purchase. ESRI information can reveal market characteristics. In 2018, about 11 percent of U.S. households, as compared to 7.6 percent of households in the Joplin trade area, bought foods specifically labeled as natural/organic. In addition, the average household in the Joplin trade area spent $2,518 on food a year away from home, which is 28 percent less than the average U.S. household; and they spent $11,406 on housing, which is 32 percent less than the average U.S. household. Pet industry data provides a useful example of how pet friendly the Joplin trade area is, and how this can translate into higher pet product and service revenue for businesses. According to 2018 ESRI data, over 49 percent of households in the Joplin trade area own a dog, while only 41.7 percent of all U.S. households own a dog. About 43 percent more Joplin trade area households bought pet food from discount stores than the average U.S. household did. Additionally, about 15 percent more people in Joplin trade area households than the average U.S. household took their pet to a veterinarian during the last year. You can utilize demographic statistics by looking for information that relates to your customers and industry. Analyze your firm’s ability to compete, the duration of the opportunity, the market growth potential for your business, and work to meet the needs that exist in the marketplace. Consider developing a strategic plan that will help you be more innovative and find new customers. You need to examine statistical data; however, you also need to survey customers, associates in your industry, and colleagues in the business community. Writing a business plan provides you with a dynamic document you can update as you discover new innovative opportunities. Your strategic plan and the success of your business will depend upon your ability to gather competitive intelligence on a continual basis, analyze your competitors, plan on how you can effectively deal with them, and then take action. You need to understand these groups of customers, the types of buying criteria they use to purchase your products/services (i.e. location, expertise, preferred brands, frequency or timing of purchases), and their buying behavior (i.e. when, where, how, and what they want to buy). Be proactive and utilize all the information you can to improve your chances of becoming more profitable.
