business community. On behalf of all of you, I express well-deserved appreciation to the Chamber Board and especially the Search Team for its many hours contributed to the selection process. Much effort, days of interviewing, discussing and consideration went into completing the selection of the person who will lead the organization next. They were focused and committed to finding the right person who would best fit our needs. Our thanks to them, individuals from the extended community, and representatives of Chamber partners who also joined the process as the finalists were determined. Great work! Chambers across the country face challenges similar to ours. We share a need to identify current relevance in a technological era and fast paced change for business today. With the announcement of our new President, a quality Board of Directors and an experienced staff, there is no doubt you are headed for productive initiatives and a business culture supportive of your own economic prosperity. This is a season for gratitude and good wishes, so I offer to you our thanks for your continued membership and wish each of you a very joy filled 2018 holiday season. Joplin Area Catholic Schools has received a Missouri Department of Natural Resources grant to replace the surface of the Early Childhood playground at St. Mary’s Catholic School, 3025 South Central City Road. The JACS system received $27,176 from the MDNR for the new playground surface. The new surface is a 2-inch DuroMat Playground Safety Base, which will cover the ground throughout the playground and replace the current wood chip surface. In addition to the new surface, St. Mary’s will remove the current playground equipment and install new equipment for the school’s preschool and pre-Kindergarten area. Through the MDNR grant, the DuroMat playground safety tiles for playgrounds uses scrap tires from Missouri. This stems from a 2014 legislative session during which the Missouri General Assembly renewed the 50-cent scrap tire fee collected on the sale of new tires. The revenues generated from the scrap tire fee are deposited into the Scrap Tire Subaccount of the Solid Waste Fund. Construction on the St. Mary’s Early Childhood playground began in November. For more information on the Scrap Tire Surface Material Grants, please contact the Department of Natural Resources’ Solid Waste Management Program via the website at http://dnr.mo.gov/env/ swmp/tires/tirefinassistance.htm or by phone 800.361.4827 or 573.751.5401.

Power study, both purchase and refinance customers cite online/website as the most frequent method of submitting a mortgage application. The 43 percent who did so in 2017 represented a jump from just 28 percent in 2016. Those numbers – representing consumer preferences for how they want to do business – are part of the reason community banks have begun empowering their customers with online and mobile mortgage application tools. These tools allow consumers to have more control of how, when and where they apply for a mortgage. At Arvest Bank, for example, a recently updated online mortgage platform and a newly launched mobile app give mortgage customers the ability to act quickly in a real estate market marked by low inventory and heightened competition among buyers. Similarly, Arvest utilizes an online mortgage platform developed by Ellie Mae that allows borrowers to research rates and types of loans, and to submit an application electronically. Despite the mortgage customers’ increased preference for a digital experience, though, community banks still offer the kind of personalized service customers crave. That sentiment is reflected in the J.D. Power study, as it indicated satisfaction among customers applying online/via website declined by 18 points year-over-year. “It’s important that these self-serve conveniences are available for those who want that option,” Arvest Mortgage Loan Manager, Cheryl Roderique, said. “At the same time, though, some customers may still want to tap into the expertise our local mortgage experts can offer. What we’ve really tried to do is create a hybrid approach that allows the consumer to choose what works best for their unique situation.”

8 Steps for Effective Time Management by KAREN BRADSHAW, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

“Time is money.” –BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Time is a valuable resource that requires organization. In our chaotic world of business, trying to be an effective manager can be somewhat challenging. We talk about trying to be more productive at work, but unless we utilize a time management system, we can end up not accomplishing a great deal. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it.” So, don’t procrastinate. Be self-disciplined. Following are eight ideas to assist you with organizing your time and making your workday more productive. 1. Utilize the 80/20 Rule (Pareto’s Principle) to determine which tasks are most important. Concentrate your efforts on doing important tasks first. Pareto’s Principle says that 80 percent of your effectiveness, or the good results of your actions, comes from 20 percent of your activities. It’s important to find out which 20 percent of your activities (i.e. your actions at home, work, etc.) are really important, and to concentrate your efforts on these activities. As Dale Carnegie said, “Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves.” 2. Write down your goals. Set weekly, monthly, and annual goals for your personal life as well as your work related duties. Goals should be achievable, include deadlines, and be realistic. Do not make goals that you know you cannot meet by a specific date. 3. Work to develop a great team by training employees and delegating responsibilities. Do not waste your time thinking that an employee you train today will try to steal your job tomorrow. Train employees well, and then delegate tasks to people who are trained well enough to successfully do their jobs. Reward employees who work together to be more efficient and productive. 4. Use a calendar or planner. You may be more productive by using your phone’s calendar that is synced to your computer’s calendar. Enter your appointments, meetings, and deadlines on a daily basis. You can have employees in each department share their calendars in systems like Outlook, so they are aware of each other’s time, can schedule appointments, and not interrupt each other during important meetings. 5. Make daily “to do” lists. Each morning write a list of what you think you can realistically accomplish during the day. Does your list follow your established goals? Do you have the items on your list also listed in your planner/calendar system? As you follow your “to do” list, work on one activity at a time. Sometimes, multitasking results in lots of unfinished projects and more clutter. Don’t procrastinate doing unpleasant tasks; just get them done. 6. Limit and organize your time spent on email. Check email at designated times throughout the day and turn off email notification, so that you aren’t interrupted during the day by popup screens. In order to better organize your email, set up folders for main subject areas, and have rules set that automatically move emails into your subject areas. 7. Organize your desk, computer files, and paper files. Clean out your desk and filing cabinets by throwing away (recycling) outdated paper files. Organize your computer files by setting up folders with names you can easily identify. Delete old computer files you no longer use. Scan paper files and convert them into digital files. Backup your computer files on a regular basis to an online storage service. Be prepared for problems like hard drive crashes, theft, and natural disasters. 8. Limit social media networking use to a specific time each day. Schedule social media messages with tools like Hootsuite. com for marketing your firm.

According to William Penn, “Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.” If you want to have a more profitable company, succeed at work, and be happier in your daily life; then be more productive by getting your priorities in order and spending your valuable time doing what is important.

Good Morning Joplin Events Have you ever wanted to tell a quick informational bit about something your company is doing? Would you like to tell an audience of about 100 Chamber Members? Have we got the solution for you! Join us for Good Morning Joplin on December 13, 7:15 am at the Butcher’s Block. It is a quarterly event presented by Mercy Hospital Joplin with Arvest being this quarter’s sponsor. All you need to do is email stephanie@joplincc. com and let her know you want to speak for one minute and she will put you on the speaking agenda. Good Morning Joplin breakfast programs consist of about 30 one minute speakers. Worried about what to say? Just tell the audience who you are, the name of your company and what you have coming up that you would like everyone to know about. Keep it simple because if you exceed your one minute, you will get the cow bell (which is a loud way to get you to stop talking and sit down). Please consider joining us for this great event. Even if you don’t speak, you can still attend and learn about what is going on with your peers and the business community… and there’s always a great breakfast! This is an event where we do need you to RSVP. Please go to http://cca.joplincc.com/EvtListing.a spx?dbid2=MOJop&evtid=526981&class=E and register. It’s that easy! If you use your credit card when you rsvp, you can save $2 and it only costs $12. If you prefer to be invoiced or pay at the door, it is then $14. Hope to see you there!

BUSINESS OUTLOOK DECEMBER 2018

2019 LJ 2019 Accepting Applications Leadership Joplin has been one of the most valuable programs I have been through during my career. Not only did I learn so much about our community, I was able to network and meet like-minded business professionals. The connections and relationships you build in the program are lifelong. The leadership development skills have been a great addition and I have put many of the things I learned to use daily in my position. LJ is well worth the cost and time; you get out of it what you put in. Don’t hesitate, sign up today – it will change your life, it did mine. HEATHER LESMEISTER Freeman Health System/Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals 2019 LJ Steering Committee Chair The Leadership Joplin program is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Joplin community, and prepare yourself for being an active part of the community for the future. It gets you out of your comfort zone as well as learning how to deal with others as part of a team and as a leader. I went through Leadership Joplin in 2015, and learned more about myself as a person and in the process made great friendships that will last a lifetime. Now I’m helping to mold future generations of leaders by serving on the Leadership Joplin Steering Committee, and hopefully I will see you in a future class! PAT NAGEL Choice Marketing 2019 Steering Committee Co-Chair

Leadership Joplin is a program developed by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by community businesses to identify, cultivate and motivate future community leaders. Leadership Joplin is in its 36th year with more than 925 graduates. This informative and thought-provoking program introduces participants to the community, exposes them to its challenges and requires them to fully participate in the 12-session curriculum. In addition, Leadership Joplin provides a strategic curriculum to enhance participants’ leadership skills and creates a dialogue for discussion on relevant topics and assessment of case studies, ultimately supporting the Chamber’s strategic initiatives and goals. Anyone who has a genuine interest in community leadership and wants to broaden their scope of knowledge beyond their current level is encouraged to apply to Leadership Joplin.
