PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A Great Year, but we need more people. As 2017 wraps up, it marks another year of growth for our community. The year brought the culmination of several key projects and the opportunity for new, exciting opportunities, particularly for downtown. It was also a year that saw continued growth in our population, at least based on the best tracking by the U.S. Census and what area realtors indicate is one of the strongest housing markets in some time. Overall the economy is strong, but even with our growing population we need more people; actually we need more workforce. ROB O’BRIAN In-mid November we were in Chicago for a trade event where we saw the leadership of many of PRESIDENT our area manufacturing firms. These are companies like Cott and AJM, which have great operations here but ownership in other states. We also saw locally-based companies like Jasper Products. We thanked them for their presence in our area, and for being good employers. And we asked what we can do to assist. Workforce is always a key issue, but no more so than right now. Those companies that have multiple operations in many states had some cold comfort; we are not alone in having very low unemployment. They indicate “every place” in which they operate is struggling with workforce. We also visited with a number of site consultants - those folks who are always looking for a new location for their client firms. They had the same story. Every place is struggling to find enough workforce. Then we stopped by the German-American Chamber of Commerce. They act as a clearinghouse of information for German firms looking for companies to buy, for joint-ventures and to just put a new operation in the U.S. ( NOTE: if you’re interested in a sale or joint-venture, let me know and I will connect you to a confidential contact with GACC). But the point is the GACC has been developing an apprenticeship outline based on the European standards, which could be particularly useful for companies in the international marketplace, especially in Europe. While at the GACC office we even called one local firm to connect their staff to GACC to discuss apprenticeship ideas. The longer story in that is this. Your Chamber has been working with Crowder College on apprenticeship concepts, particularly in manufacturing and construction, while we were developing the new Advanced Training and Technology Center. Crowder has already developed the base curriculum for apprenticeships, based on its work with Branco Enterprises, Inc. and Bill’s Electric, Inc., and is ready to bring on more companies. The local firm noted above is one we had connected to Crowder, then due to its European business made the next step to learn more about the German model. We already connected Crowder to GACC and they can make that happen. For most companies, though, a good apprenticeship program will meet the mark and Crowder is ready, particularly now that the ATTC is open. The ATTC, a project of your Chamber Foundation with partnership from the City, WIB and Crowder, provides the place to train existing employees and apprentices. The Crowder standard training is skills driven and provides certifications. However, there is the additional opportunity in the ATTC in terms of classrooms and space for equipment that allow for more focused apprenticeship level training. The Workforce Innovation Board staff, in the ATTC, has programs for pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships and can help companies find funding. It’s a one-stop location. Apprentices are a great opportunity to building a workforce for the long-term, but what about now? As a starting point, as we go into 2018 your Chamber will roll out a “jobs available” service on its website. You need to get your jobs posted there. But then who sees it beyond other members? First, we will promote the jobs link on social media in our region. That’s the first outreach. Second, we have a great committee working on how to recruit talent that is already hard-working, has skills and is looking for a good job in a great community. They have focused on aggressively recruiting veterans and those leaving military service. We already have a number of companies that actively recruit current vets and people leaving the service. There always seems to be two questions. First, what kind of job is there for my spouse? Second, is this a good place for me and my family. The planned effort will involve direct visits to the military bases in fairly easy driving distance to let the team doing “transition assistance” know of the Joplin area’s interest. The effort will include social media in areas around those bases. The effort will be supported by a special section on the Chamber’s website, along with the jobs board, and we will have a brochure available for companies to use in their talent recruitment as well. The brochure will cover more of the “community quality,” but still direct readers to the website as well. Looking ahead, 2018 looks like another growth year for our community with a number of great new projects coming along. We continue to grow our population but no doubt about it, all of your firms and others need more good workers. Training at the ATTC is one part; the new jobs board and efforts to recruit people to come to Joplin is another. I encourage you to get involved in one or both by contacting your Chamber right now so we can all help fill the need for more people.
