PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A Year Past and Future Somewhere in the misty past, someone decided your Chamber should have a fiscal and program year that starts on April first. There is a joke in there someplace, I am sure, but regardless, now is a good time to take a quick look back at our last 12 months and give a bit of crystal ball for this, our 100th official year of serving businesses and community. First, a big thank you to our members, whether you are new in this past year or one of our great, long- term members that have supported the Chamber and community for ROB O’BRIAN, decades. We are stronger because of your membership. PRESIDENT Thank you, as well, to the more than 300 individuals among our membership who volunteer to serve on the board of directors and on our many committees. Your personal support greatly magnifies the efforts of our 16 great employees and enables us to do many things to support our community and our region. Your Chamber’s largest direct project began in earnest one year ago this month, in April 2016, with the acquisition of a 51,000-square-foot downtown building and work to turn it into a training center as well as space for small companies. After more than 18 months of preliminary work in partnership with Crowder College and the Workforce Innovation Board, we were able to present the Joplin City Council with a vision of providing great training opportunities for our area residents and provide better-skilled employees to our area firms. The Council embraced the program, committing nearly $6 million in disaster recovery funds to the Chamber Foundation to acquire, remodel and equip the facility. Crowder begins its classes in August 2017, but in the meantime, the WIB has moved in and two tenants have already taken some of the space for small firms. Thanks to Crowder, WIB and especially the City for working with us to create a facility that will serve our companies and residents for years to come. We had terrific things going on in our Member Services arena as well. This year’s Leadership Joplin program has continued training up and coming leaders about what makes the community tick as well as spreading the good word about Joplin at our state capitol. The Leadership Joplin group has also partnered to do a joint session with our Tomorrow’s Leaders Today class, giving both those already in the workplace and high school students an opportunity to share perspectives about our area’s future. We had a membership event that brought in more than 100 new members, plus the day in and day out calls that brought in at least that many more. Our Member Services group also executed an exciting Business EXPO at its new venue at Downstream Casino Resort Pavilion. This first major event of 2017 kicked off our 100th year with a lot of enthusiasm and new ideas, including the amazingly popular flaming dessert bar. Of course, we worked on economic development with HS Baking, EaglePicher’s new facility, expansion of Heartland Pet Products and a new company, DEF, LLC, which should formally announce its project this spring. And, our new Kansas City University Medical School moves from construction to classes in the next few months. Looking ahead, we are again in our five-year accreditation cycle, which means a lot of staff and volunteer time to make sure we are doing the right things for our members and community. We continue to address workforce issues, not only with our new training center, but our Joplin Regional Partnership campaign to encourage people to get better training at our many regional educational institutions. And while there is a lot more to talk about, I encourage you to act right now to make your reservations for our 100th anniversary banquet May 4. For the first time in decades, we will have a keynote speaker. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee will join us to talk not about politics, but about growing up in Arkansas; stories called too funny to be true-but are. And, of course, we will recognize so many great folks who make Joplin a thriving community. There are a lot of good things coming in our 100th year. Join us May 4 to find out more.

business outlook APRIL 2017

Your Chamber, Then and Now Follow us on our journey through time as we celebrate how your Chamber shaped the area from its inception in 1917 to today. The following article ran in the July 2012 Business Outlook, when your Chamber was celebrating its 95th anniversary. It was written by Brad Belk with the Joplin Museum Complex and features a look back at Joplin during the war years of the '40s. The census of 1940 showed Joplin with a population of 37,144, up 11 percent from 1930. As the decade of the 1930s faded, so did the Great Depression’s high unemployment rate. World War II created various job opportunities. The federal government established a defense training center at Lafayette School during the summer of 1942. Free training was offered to thousands of people in aircraft sheet metal work, welding, forging and other related activities. When hired, the workers made from 55 to 75 cents an hour. During the war, thousands of military men invaded the downtown commercial district from Camp Crowder. The weekends were particularly busy for merchants catering to the amusement and recreational needs of the Signal Corps soldiers. The Tri-State lead and zinc mines were also active. Both minerals were in high demand to supply the war effort. Local miners were given deferments because of their labor value in the mining fields. The price of freedom was not without cost as Joplin residents, and all Americans, made extremely serious sacrifices. Approximately 5,000 Joplin servicemen proudly served their country and tragically, 166 made the ultimate sacrifice--never returning home alive. Everyone did their part to help during this time, as nearly every consumer item was rationed from automobiles and household appliances to sugar and meat. The community rallied in support of the war effort. Over 7,000 students, from first-graders to Joplin Junior Collegians, purchased and sold war bonds and stamps from September 1942 through May 1943, collecting $162,578.20. With those dollars, the military purchased 75 Army Jeeps and a Mustang fighter plane. The P-51 fighter plane was aptly named “The Joplin Public Schools.” An air-minded, Joplin electorate voted 12 to 1 in favor of a $250,000 bond issue that improved the Joplin Airport in 1944. In 1946, a $350,000 addition was completed to St. John’s Hospital, then located at 22nd and Jackson. The construction consisted of a two-story, 50-bed extension to the hospital. The East Seventh Street viaduct was completed in 1940 for $234,000. The county, state and school tax rates for Joplin residents in 1947 were set at $3.59 on a $100 valuation. One year earlier, the rate was set at $2.70. The City’s operating budget in 1948 was $527,006.75. A couple of horses performed in front of the Chamber office located at 122 West 4th Street. Hatsushimo (1946), formerly owned by Emperor Hirohito of Japan, and the Hollywood wonder horse known as Gallant Bess (1947) kicked up their hoofs entertaining local residents. One hundred animal lovers got together in 1948 at the Coca Cola auditorium, 12th & Virginia, to discuss the humane treatment of animals. This nucleus would establish the Joplin Humane Society. Joplin “Firsts” - In 1946, FM radio debuted in Joplin at the WMBH station, located at the Frisco building. According to The Joplin Globe, the largest Safeway store in Missouri opened at 4th and Gray in 1947. The grocery store became the first to be totally air conditioned. The Joplin Little Theatre got a new stage address in 1948 at 1st Street and Adams, as they converted a former horse academy into an intimate theatre. Their first production was "The Skin of Our Teeth." Also that year, Joplin’s first drive-in, outdoor theater, the Tri-State Drive-In, opened on West Seventh. The first automobile drive-in bank depository began operations in 1949 at the “Friendly” First National Bank at 524 Main. Resulting from a provision in the new Missouri Constitution, women were given the opportunity for the first time to serve on a jury in state and federal courts. With the 1946 ruling, Elsie Shull became Joplin’s first woman to serve in this capacity. Join us next time as we discover 1950s Joplin.

Message to the Network from Chairman Ryan S. Melton

I’m often asked something that sounds a lot like this, “Now that you’re the chairman of YPN, what is going to be your focus this year?” That’s a great question that I haven’t always had a great answer to, but recently I think I came up with an answer; maybe not the best answer but an answer nonetheless. In the ancient world, the Roman culture existed as a caste system, meaning if you were born with wealth and influence, you would always have wealth and influence. If you were not born with wealth and influence, then you would never have either. During these times, wealthy men would identify young artists, writers, philosophers and others who showed potential but who were not a part of their social class. They would hire them to be an anteambulo. The word "anteambulo" literally means “clearing the path.” An anteambulo would travel in front of their patron making way, communicating messages and generally making their lives easier. As the anteambulos went about their work, they were able to create vital relationships, learn lessons they would never learn anywhere else, and they would become invaluable to their supervisor. As the anteambulo showed his worth, the lines of the caste system began to be erased, and their fate began to change. As a young leader, I would recommend that you become an anteambulo. That you make the path easier for those around you and in doing so, you will build your leadership and your influence. Great leaders aren’t born, they are built along the journey. I think this analogy sums up what I want to focus on this year in the Young Professionals Network. I want to continue to see young professionals clearing the path for our community to grow and become stronger. I want to continue to see young professionals clearing the path for others to grow and become

stronger, and I want to continue to see young professionals clearing the path for those whose path may be inherently more difficult than ours. What do you think we could accomplish in one year if we all focused on being an anteambulo?

MSSU SBTDC Celebrates 30th Anniversary

By Karen Bradshaw, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Missouri Southern State University

The Missouri Southern State University Small Business & Technology Development Center (MSSU SBTDC) was established in April 1987. The MSSU SBTDC is part of a nation-wide network of SBTDC programs and is affiliated with and supported by the Robert W. Plaster School of Business. The MSSU SBTDC serves businesses in Jasper, Newton, McDonald, Barton, Vernon, Cedar, Dade and Lawrence counties. Providing quality assistance to small businesses in order to promote growth, innovation, increased productivity and management improvement is the purpose of the MSSU SBTDC. The goal is to contribute to the economic growth and strengthen the small business community by utilizing federal, state and local resources. The MSSU SBTDC meets specialized and complex needs of small businesses through resources, training events and no-fee one-on-one consulting services. The MSSU SBTDC partners with area chambers of commerce, financial institutions and other organizations to provide training events. The MSSU SBTDC is one of nearly 1,000 centers throughout the United States that provides management and technical assistance to over a million individuals annually. America’s SBTDC network of centers is located in all 50 states and the territories of the U.S. The program is a partnership between the U.S. Small Business Administration, colleges and universities, state governments and private organizations. This nationwide network provided non-fee based business counseling last year to 192,205 entrepreneurs who created 100,233 new jobs, started 17,864 new companies, generated $6.9 billion in new sales, and obtained $4.6 billion in financing. The Missouri Southern SBTDC is also part of the Missouri Business Development Program, which is comprised of 10 SBTDC centers located at Missouri colleges and universities, an International Trade Center, the Mid-America Trade Adjustment Assistance Center, the Missouri Environmental Assistance Center, the BDP Workforce Program, the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, and the Missouri Extension Business Development Specialists. Between 2013 and 2015, businesses that used the

consulting services provided by the Missouri Business Development Program created or retained 24,180 jobs, increased their sales revenue by $439 million, and acquired over $419 million in financial investments. The Missouri Business Development Program created $119 in economic impact for every one dollar invested in the system. SBTDC business consultants work to assist pre-venture and existing Missouri businesses with critical business development issues in marketing, management, strategic planning, accounting, finance and international trade. During the past five years (October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2016), the MSSU SBTDC consultants spent 7,680 hours consulting with 1,241 pre-venture and existing businesses. These organizations created 499 new jobs, retained 471 jobs, acquired $22 million in loans and equity, and increased their sales by $60 million. The SBTDC provided business counseling to people who started 83 businesses during the last five years. The MSSU SBTDC offers a wide selection of training programs and events for low fees. People receive training in the areas of starting a business, managing cash flow, writing a business plan, understanding financial statements, QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, predicting cash needs, customer service, generational marketing, data analysis, how to export, leadership skills for women business owners, and veterans’ business programs. During the last five years, the MSSU SBTDC held 263 training events with 2,590 people in attendance. For-profit business owners who desire one-on-one counseling services can contact the MSSU SBTDC by emailing the office at sbtdc@mssu.edu or by calling 417. 625.3128. A full list of SBTDC training events is available on the SBTDC website at www.mssutraining. com. The Missouri Southern SBTDC will celebrate its 30th anniversary Friday, April 7, at 3 pm in Plaster Hall, Cornell Auditorium (Room 201), on the MSSU campus. Everyone is invited to join the celebration.

EVERY CHILD MATTERS

APRIL 2017

business outlook

JOIN US TO HELP PREVENT CHILD ABUSE April is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month. During April, you will see events and activities in Joplin geared towards raising awareness of child abuse and increasing our prevention efforts. One April is a coalition of local agencies, businesses and community stakeholders in the Joplin area who have joined together to prevent child abuse. We are asking you to become a part of that effort by showing your support for child abuse prevention. You can do this in one of several ways: 1. Display blue pinwheels at your office or place of business. To purchase pinwheels, go to www.missourikidsfirst.org to place your order. 2. Display a pinwheel bouquet in your office or place of business by going to www.theallianceofswmo.org or calling 417-782-9899 and making a tax deductible donation of $25 or $50. Your bouquet will be delivered to your place of business along with your tax deduction letter. 3. License to Care: Purchase a special license plate at Missouri Children’s Trust Fund www.ctf4kids.org. (See enclosed form) During the month of April, we want to paint the town blue to show Joplin’s support for child abuse prevention, but we can only do that with your help. Please join our efforts to keep children, our most vulnerable citizens, safe. Sincerely, Nancy Corley Director of Child and Family Well-being The Alliance of SWMO
