Ahmed Ansari is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Integrated Design and Media at New York University. His research and writing sits at the intersection of design studies and critical cultural theory, with a focus on decolonising knowledge production in design ethnography, history, and theory, and in cosmotechnicity and its promise for more pluriversal forms of designing. He also does educational consulting for design programs in Pakistan and is a founding member of the Decolonising Design platform.

Naïma is a London (UK) based independent type and graphic designer from France, with Tunisian heritage, working with/in between the Arabic and Latin scripts. On-going interests and research are situated somewhere at the intersection of type design, language, archive and storytelling. She explores those connections through both her design practice and collaborations as well as through regular workshops she leads. She recently took part in L.i.P collective research and Against the Grain program curated by Futuress.

Kate Bingaman-Burt mostly draws, letters, documents, and collects, but she also does a lot of other things that involve energy, conversation, and exchange. Kate is a full-time educator and makes illustrations for all sorts of clients all around the world. Since 2008, she has worked at Portland State University and is the Associate Director of The School of Art + Design and a Professor of Graphic Design. She opened Outlet in 2017, which hosts workshops, pop-up events and a fully operational risograph print studio. Kate loves creating spaces that make people want to MAKE!

Audrey Bennett is an inaugural University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor and Director of the MDes in Integrative Design program at the University of Michigan. She is a former Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Scholar of the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and a former College Art Association Professional Development Fellow. She studies the design of images that, through interactive aesthetics, can permeate cultural boundaries and impact the way we think and behave. Her research publications include: Follow the Golden Ratio from Africa to the Bauhaus for a Cross-Cultural Aesthetic for Images, Towards an Autochthonic Black Aesthetic for Graphic Design Pedagogy, and The African Roots of Swiss Design.

She is the co-editor of the Icograda Design Education Manifesto 2011, a member of the Editorial Boards of the journals Image and Text (South Africa) and New Design Ideas (Azerbaijan), and a member of the Board of Directors of the College Art Association.

Speaker Bio Pierre Bowins is Assistant Professor in Studio Arts at UMES. His twenty-plus years in the field of design have provided him with a broad view to prepare students for the future of emerging trends in Art and Design’s contemporary practice. Pierre is a lifelong maker, educator and self-proclaimed design historian. His design and teaching methods utilize research-based theories to assist in the discovery of personal, cultural, and historical identities while implementing design ideas within analog and digital media. His research largely focuses on exploring the history of graphic design and investigating the omission that exists within design history. Pierre holds a Master of Fine Arts from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art. He has been an active member of his local Americas Institute of Graphic Arts, College Arts Association, and University and College Designers Association.

SPIN is the creative output of a London-based studio, which has been rotating between the poles of art and design since 1992. This revolution has so far been televised, animated, printed, photographed, pixelated and painted, but rather than offer singular or static solutions, their vision is for an ongoing dialogue between a conceptual practice and its many applications in the real world. SPIN partners, Tony Brook and Jonas Zieher lead the creative team. taking responsibility for the strategic and creative direction of the studio.

Carissa Carter is Academic Director at the Stanford d.school. In this role she guides the development of the d.school’s pedagogy, instructors, and class offerings. She teaches courses on the intersection of data and design, designing with emerging technologies, and design for climate change. Carissa was a co-leader of Stanford 2025, a multi-year project that envisioned the future of higher education.

She loves building accessible, analog prototyping tools for emerging technologies. Her ‘I Love Algorithms’ cards have won multiple awards.

Carissa’s first career was as a geologist, and she continues to pursue projects at the crossover between design and science. Maps, and the experiences they create, are consistent threads in her work. Her first book, The Secret Language of Maps, comes out in April 2022. Since 2010, Carissa has taken a photo every day at 6:06pm.

Speaker Bio Jackie Brown is a Graphic Designer/Illustrator based in Portland Oregon. With her father serving in the military, she grew up living on multiple bases throughout Asia and has also lived in a number of different states. Aside working Full-time as a Graphic Designer she spends her free time exploring ways to enrich her personal creative work. Her work is bold, bright, and charismatic. She is inspired by the small things in life that bring her joy such as fruits, animal prints, vintage cars, and positive messaging.

Speaker Bio Stephanie Carpenter is a letterpress printer, educator, and graphic designer. She is the Program Officer at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. At the museum she leads programs including New Impressions an international, juried exhibition; coordinates the annual Wayzgoose conference; and teaches workshops. As a representative of Hamilton she has been involved with TypeCon 2012 Milwaukee; HOW Design 2016 Atlanta and 2013 San Francisco; and the Type Directors Club in New York City for Century: 100 Years of Type in Design. Her evenings are spent creating personal art in the form of posters, installations, and artists’ books. Stephanie enjoys the tactile nature of letterpress printing, creating her work using wood and metal type, hand-carved blocks, and found imagery.
