NOSC Manchester Prepares Packages for Troops
Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), Joint Base Pearl HarborHickam, conducted forensic analysis on remains of two Sailors found in the gun turret of the Civil War-era ironclad ship, USS Monitor who are to be interred March 8 at Arlington National Cemetery. The U.S. Navy has prepared and released to the public a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate the potential environmental effects that may result from homeporting up to 14 littoral combat ships (LCSs) on the East Coast of the United States by 2020. The Navy is making plans to close its archives to all visitors and research requests if the upcoming sequestration proceeds, Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) officials announced Feb. 27. Submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) arrived in Sepangar Bay for the first of several port visits over the next month with the mission to perform remote operational commitments to her partners in the region, Feb. 28.

The Rev. Dr. Crystal McPhail, pastor of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and Swannanoa United Methodist Church, is deploying to Djibouti. She is in the Naval Reserves, holding the rank of lieutenant. “This is my first deployment,” McPhail said. “I’ve been in the reserves for a couple of years. Camp Lemonnier, where I will be stationed, requested a female chaplain with counseling experience. I have a doctorate degree in pastoral counseling. I will be gone for a year.” She will be serving the troops from various branches of service, and working with local orphanages, counseling about proper nutrition, and other areas in which people need help. Djibouti is located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Somalia to the southeast, Eritrea and the Red Sea in the northwest, and Ethiopia to the west. It achieved its independence from France in 1977. Its history is recorded in poetry and songs of its nomadic people. The area goes back thousands of years, when Djiboutians traded hides and skins for perfumes and spices from ancient Egypt, India, and China. Camp Lemonnier is made of some 5,000 troops from every branch of the service. It covers 88 acres and is the only U.S. military base located in
Africa. It works to build security and stability in the region. “I will not be serving just the Navy troops, but men and women from all branches of the service,” McPhail said. “I joined the military to be a symbol of God’s grace in a broken environment. I have been a minister for 12 years.” McPhail is single. Her father and step-mother live in Gastonia. Her brother, Zack Gray, is a former Marine, and is now doing contract work in Afghanistan “The primary goal of Camp Lemonnier is to protect goods coming and going by the Red Sea,” she said. “I have enjoyed being the pastor of the Swannanoa United Methodist Church where the first Welcome Table started, and now there are 10 other ones in the area. When I return, I hope to come back to this area.” McPhail says it is always hard to say good-bye to the people she has served. The Tabernacle congregation tied a yellow ribbon around one of the trees in the front of the church, which will remain until she returns. “The Methodist Conference is trying to find an interim minister for a year,” Lois Nix, member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, said. “Rev. McPhail is a real people person, and we are going to miss her a lot. She delivers wonderful messages straight from the Bible. She doesn’t read her sermons, but rather preaches them. She does a lot of visiting the sick in the homes and in the hospital.”

USS Saratoga (CV-3) struck by 5 kamikazes but survived with loss of 123. Bismark Sea was last carrier lost in combat during World War II.
