“We estimate that between 400 million and 800 million individuals could be displaced by automation and need to find new jobs by 2030 around the world.”
(McKinsey&Company, 2017)
introduction.
The brief given was to design a space for Singapore in 2030, aptly titled Singapura Futura. Issues were found that targeted the separation of age groups and a disability for everyone involved due to the lack of skill relevance.
Automation is and will be an issue in 2030, taking away low-skilled jobs, increasing the average skill competency among working individuals.
The ever increasing population would directly relate to increased competition.
causes. effects.
Creation of newer and better technology would require a much higher understanding of operating various tech to carry out job necessities. Put simply, the older working class will struggle.
A slower process than most would assume, job loss would take it’s place after automation, slowly eliminating unnecessary man power.
2030 would be very technologically driven, driving a divide between the capable and the incapable, mainly the older and younger generations.
opportunity.
As it would happen, the two age groups are validated in their own area of skills that the other lacks. An otpportunity for an exchanging of skills could aid both groups.
target group.
In 2030, The middle aged (50-65 yrs) would lack technological skills; The teens (13-20 yrs) would lack more human skills that drive human connection and job opportunities.

design statement.
To create a social space aimed to connect teens and the middle aged, to share skills (technological and human skills), staying prepared for 2030 and beyond.
Focusing on a target set of skills deemed most transferable, an idea for skill exchange in an informal setting was created. Looking into a space providing edu-tainment and a socio-communal means to approach the issue, the focus shifted to accommodate the exchange of digital skill throughout the whole space.

Human skills such as critical thinking, decision making and complex problem solving have been proven to be fostered through multiple generations using the same few methods, namely:
Cooking, Art, Storytelling.

concept.
The space was to be neat, grid aligned, light and transparent. Targeted at skill sharing, the concepts were utilised to create a interesting space layout and ambience. Various concepts were hence envisioned with the keywords ‘exchange’ or ‘crossing of paths’.

at cross roads,
To physically meet and connectively exchange, the concept was to layout the programs and space based on the different paths the two target audiences would take. An exchange of skills would have aligned where their paths met.

an exchange.
To exhange is to give and receive. The spaces act in a similar way, ‘giving’ away a portion of its space, and ‘receiving’ from another space. Resulting in a shared void or subtraction of space and various linked or connected spaces.

Being a clearer and more developed concept, the spaces and programs were laid out for a sketch review. The first rendition of the plans shows a clear layout of the concept.

These are some examples of the various intepretations of the ‘shared void‘. Clusters of spaces are stacked and a void is subtracted from them, creating a clear void in 3D.

This allowed for interesting overhangs and views from the second floor. This cemented my choice to shift the void to be the main space, where all spaces are connected visually.

The storytelling exhibit is the second major space.
As such it went through various levels of ideation to achieve a multitude of ways for the users to showcase their individual stories, their lives, and their wisdom.

A glass bridge, focusing on digital art feedback was made to be the highlight of the void.
Connecting either sides of the void, it showcases digital art uploaded in the space. Here users can reflect and voice out their opinions of each piece.

The end result is a center piece of the space, showcasing reflection and self growth.
Additionally, with the process of reflection being fully digital using provided tablets, technological adaptibility is naturally taught. as well as the process of broadcasting yourself online.
