The Deyrolle company was founded in 1831 by French naturalist JeanBaptiste Deyrolle. The Deyrolle shop was first located at 23 rue de la Monnaie, Paris, France, later moving to 46 rue du Bac in 1888. The shop was, and is still, known as a cabinet of natural curiosities, providing a wide range taxidermied animal species, insect and shell collections, and natural science teaching resources.
Jean-Baptiste’s grandson, Émile, assumed ownership of Deyrolle in 1866. In the early 1870s, Émile created a series of pedagogical wall charts, published under the name, ”Musée scolaire Deyrolle.” These illustrated charts, which covered a range of natural subjects including zoology, entomology, and botany, were intended for classroom usage. This proved to be an enormously successful venture for Deyrolle, with the French State becoming its main client, distributing charts throughout the public educational system during the 1870s.
