ENTWURFS-STRATEGIE // DESIGN-STRATEGY Das Projekt 12³ untersucht die Wohnungsbau Möglichkeiten für ein Bauvolumen von (BxLxH) 12x12x12 m. Jeder Gruppe wurde unter diesen Parametern ein Grundstück in einem fiktiven urbanen bebautem Kontext zugewiesen.

Bei der Parzelle 41 handelt es sich um ein Eckgrundstück mit einer angrenzenden Reihenbebauung. Die volumetrische Ausformulierung des Gebäudes reagiert auf den städtischen Kontext und weist subtil auf die Besonderheit des Eckgrundstücks hin. Dies gelingt durch einen Einschnitt, der das Volumen zur Ecke hin öffnet und von außen in zwei turmartige Körper von unterschiedlicher Größe teilt.

Im Einschnitt zurückgesetzt befindet sich zwischen diesen Körpern ein Kern, welcher einerseits die Erschließung der oberen Geschosse beinhaltet und andererseits die beiden Volumen verbindet. Dadurch wirkt das Gebäude von außen geteilt, in den Wohnungen jedoch ergibt sich ein fließender Raum, welcher von dem zusätzlichen Licht des Einschnitts profitiert.

Um diesen Raum als Besonderheit des Entwurfs zur Geltung zu bringen, werden die jeweiligen Nutzungen in einer Zone ausgegliedert und hinter aufschiebbaren Falttüren versteckt, die in der Wand verschwinden können um den Eindruck eines fließenden Raumes zu erschaffen.

The project 12³ examines the possiblities of housing design in an dense urban context. Each group was allocated a plot of (LxBxH) 12x12x12 m in a fictional area.

Lot 41 is located on the SW corner with bordering row housing plots.

The volumetric formultation of the building reacts to the urban context and subtly hints at the significance of its local situation. This is accomplished by a consciously placed incision which devides the building centrally into two semi-separate tower like bodies of different sizes. This central void leads to the buildings core structure which dominates the incision and constitutes the main structural device which contains the buildings vertical circulation and connects the two structural volumes. The central incision visually devides the building from an exterior perspective, however allows a generous open plan, flowing room which profits from the additional lighting sanctioned by the incisoin. To latch on to the extraordinary facade design , the interior room is enhanced by all its habitational functions beeing concealed within a 1m console along the walls which are accessible by folding doors made of cortenised steel panels, to allow for an uninterupted vastly open atmosphere.

KONZEPT ERDGESCHOSS

Das Erdgeschoss steht der öffentlichen Nutzung eines Cafes, zur Verfügung. Der Einschnitt wirkt wie eine Begrüßungsgeste und zieht die Passanten an diesem städtebaulichen Knotenpunkt von der Straße ins Gebäude. Das Cafe wirkt einladend und anziehend, während sich der versteckte Eingangsbereich die Privatsphäre der Bewohner wahrt.

In der bereits erwähnten Wandkonsole befindet sich im Cafe die Zubereitung. Fahrräder und E-Scooter, welche den Bewohnern vorbehalten sind, befinden sich in der Zone des Eingangsbereiches im hinteren, privaten Bereich.

GROUND FLOOR CONCEPT

The groundfloor offers a publically available gesture by accomodating a cafe. In this case the incision acts as an invitory gesture and attracts passersby by funnelling the pedestrian traffic through its void. The cafe is alingned to the main road while the private entrance is subtly concealed behind the core which contains a spiral staircase and ensures the residents privacy.

The previously described 1m wall console contains the cafe’s preparation and marketing section. The walls along the perimeter of the entrance section on the N-W corner acommodate bicycle and E-scooter shelters for the buildings residents as well as a bathroom for the cafe visitors.

DIE LEBENDIGE FASSADE/ / THE MOPRHING FACADE Die Fassade des Gebäudes ist geschosshoch verglast, um von der süd-westlichen Ausrichtung der Parzelle zu profitieren. Lamellen, welche sowohl um ihre eigene Achse gedreht, als auch auf einer Schiene verschoben werden können, und somit eine hohe Individualität ermöglichen, dienen als Sonnen- sowie Sichtschutz.

Von Außen entsteht ein einheitlicher oder verspielter, offener oder geschlossener Eindruck. Die Fassade erlaubt die Steuerung von Rückzug und Interaktion. Der Grad mit welchem die Öffentlichkeit den privaten Bereich durchdringt ist veränderlich, folglich ist die Wohnsituation exponiert oder geschützt. Die Schienen, auf welcher die Lamellen befestigt sind, führen zu einer horizontalen Dreiteilung die Ein erhöhtes Erdgeschoss und darüber zwei Wohnungen kenntlich machen.

The buildings facade consists of floor to ceiling high glazing to retain as many solar gains as possible. A facade device made up a grill consisting of rotating as well as sliding panels controls the buildings natural ventilation, lighting and acts as a privacy barrier. This allows the buildings residents to control the exterior appearance in terms of exposition and complete solitude.

The mechanically movable elements allow for the facade to take multiple shapes and appearances based on the inhabitants respective preferrence regarding privacy, temperature and airflow. The grills slide along horizontal rails mounted to the exterior flank of the floor seperations which emphasize the buildings vertical structure.

ENTWURFS-STRATEGIE // DESIGN-STRATEGY Dieses Projekt birgt die Herausforderung im Bestand zu bauen , indem ein historisches Druckereigebäude (The Belfast Telegraph) durch architektonische Intervention in ein modernes Studenten Vereinszentrum transformiert werden sollte.

Da das Gebäude sich sehr zentral in der Stadt befindet und zu Fuß vom Universitätsbau ca. 30 Minuten entfernt liegt, ist es für den Gebrauch und für die Aufenthaltsqualität wichtig, diesen neuen Anbau zu einer allgemeinen Attraktion zu machen, um den langen Weg dort hin zu rechtfertigen.

Der gewählte Ansatz schlägt einen Neubau vor, der die Bestandsfassade als Scheinvorhang behält und dem Altbau eine doppelte interne Schicht verleiht, wie ein innenliegender Kokon in dem sich das eigentliche Studentenzentrum befindet. Das Erdgeschoss wird jedoch komplett der Öffentlichkeit vorbehalten und wird durch einen großzügigen Innenhof mit einem Lichtbrunnen zu einem ‘internen’ Außenbereich, der multifunktional benutzt werden kann. Der Platz ist als zurückgezogener Aufenthaltsort, für die Öffentlichkeit angedacht, mit Sitzmöglichkeiten und Cafe um diese historischen Fassade von Innen so wie Außen erlebbar zu machen. Das Studentenzentrum bietet eine Vielfalt an offenen und privaten Arbeitsplätzen sowohl als auch größere Räumlichkeiten für Präsentationen und sonstige Aktivitäten.

The goal of this project was to design a Student Union building based on a pre-existing historical building in central Belfast. The challenge was to make an adaptive reuse modell out of the building which used to be a paper printing factory (The Belfast Telegraph).

Since the building is located in central Belfast UK, and most of the students reside within a 1 km radius of the main University campus which is approximately 30 minutes away from the city centre by foot, it was imparative to turn this building into a desireable location for students, to make the trip worthwhile.

The chosen design tactic was to leave the facade mostly unchanged except for opening up the ground level and removing all windows to leave a hollow shell of the historic building and insert a second skin containing the actual Student Union within like a cocoon. Leaving the facade as a monument to be experienced by the public from both sides. The open ground floor also provides a generous multifunctional central performance space and a cafe. The Student Union, located within this hollowed out building offers a variety of private and open plan co-working spaces as well as larger rooms for meetings and clubs.

Das Ziel dieses Projekts war es, eine temporäre Lösung für ein umstrittenes Grundstück in Belfast UK zu finden, um die Zeit bis zu einem permanenten Stadtentwicklungsbeschluss zu überbrücken und diese vorübergehende Lösung bestmöglich in einen möglichen zukunftigen städtebäulichen Entwurf zu integrieren. Der gewählte Ansatz schlägt einen Gemeinschaftsgarten für die lokale Nachbarschaft vor.

Hierfür wird das Gründstück in ein Raster von 5 x 5m Gartenzuteilungen aufgeteilt, aus dem die garten Zuteilungen sowie die zukunftige Stadtentwicklung wachsen soll. Hierfür vorgesehen ist ein Sortiment an vorgefertigten temporären Gebäuden für die Verwaltung des Gartens mit verschiedenen Funktionen. Diese Baumodule werden so konstruiert, dass sie von der Nachbarschaftsgemeinde unter Anleitung errichtet werden können, um Baukosten und Zeit zu sparen sowie um dem Projekt sentimentalen Wert zu verleihen und der Nachbarschaft ein Gemeinschaftsgefühl durch ein gemeinsames Ziel zu geben.

This project aims to create a temporary solution for a heavily disputed project site in cental Belfast UK. The temporary solution is meant to become the bridge between the meanwhile use of the plot and the permanent architectural construction destined for the site, and if possible, to be integreated into the long term design scheme.

The strategic play for this project was to utilize this unused plot of land as a community garden for the neighbourhood based on a grid of 5x5 m for the garden alottments. This also considers a simpler way to incoprorate the long term buildings into the property layout. The temporary architectural approach intends to populate the garden grid with prefabricated building modules with varying functions and sizes. These building modules are designed to be constructed in a way that allows persons of no prior construction knowledge to be able to construct these houses, aided by a manual.

This strategy provides a swift and cost efficient construction process as well as empowering community participation and adding to the sentimental value of the project.

MONTAGE/ / ASSEMBLY Dieses vorgefertigte modulare Bausystem sieht die temporäre architektonische Lösung für das Projektgebiet vor. Mit einer einfachen Konstruktion, die mithilfe einer Anleitung von Menschen ohne Baustellenerfahrung errichet und montiert werden kann. Die modulare Form ist nicht nur in ihrer Gestaltungsvielfalt, sondern auch in ihrer Größe anpassbar. Die vorgefertigten Rahmen können aneinander gereiht werden um ein größeres Ensemple zu bilden , je nach Funktion des Gebäudes. Als Beispiel finden sich unten auf der Seite die Anleitungsschritte für den Aufbau des Werkzeugdepots.

These prefabricated modular building systems constitute the temporary solution for the project site. The simple construction , aided by an instruction manual is intended to be constructable by people without any experience in the construction industry. The modular form is adaptable to the buildings function in shape and size. The building frames can be arranged in a variety of arrangements to form a multitude of construction ensemples. Seen at the bottom of the page is an example of the assembly steps needed to construct the toolshed.

Die Kosntruktionsphasen l - lV sind so eingeteilt, dass das ‘Urban Farming’ Konzept so ungestört und ununterbrochen wie möglich weitergeführt werden kann und die Pflanzenbeete den geplanten Gebäudegrundstücken dienen.

Die Pflanzen-Parzellen wurden daher vorrausschauend dem zukünftigen Bebauungsplan angepasst.

Die temporären Gebäude (Grün) wurden daher auch so angeordnet, dass sie auch während den Konstruktionsphasen sowohl während als auch nach Bauschluss, in Betrieb bleiben können.

So bleibt die Option des langfristigen Gemeinschaftsgartens mit einer bereits etablierten Infrastuktur als auch die Integration der Grünlandschaft in das neue urbane Gebilde.

Phases I - IV cover the planned long term urban development scheme and shows the evolution of the site from temporary architectural intervention to finalised permanent urban design solution.

The garden allotments as well as the temporary buildings are arranged so that the urban development phases do not intervene with the operability of the community garden. Even after completion of the long term architectural solution, these temporary buildings can optionally be adopted into the permanent design scheme.

These garden plots are even currated to the point that they are integrated into the long term design schemes by constituting the building gardens and form a privacy barrier. Since the garden alottments are based on a grid, the new buildings can be integrated into the design scheme without complications.

In jedem Modulbau ist ein Wassertank integriert, der Regenwasser vom Dach ansammelt, filtert und anschließend für die Gartenbewässerung oder andere Gebrauchsfunktionen verwendet.

Das Dach jedes Moduls bietet ebenso die Möglichkeit

zur Anbringung von Fotovoltaik Zellen um die Infrastruktur des Gemeinschaftsgartens umso unabhängiger zu machen. Durch den witterungsbedingten Regenüberfluss in Nordirland beweist sich so eine Wassernutzung als zeit- und geldsparend und ist somit eine nachhaltige Lösung für die Gartenbewässerung.

E N V I R O N M E N TA L S T R AT E GY Each module is accompanied by a water storage tank, which accumulates rainwater from the roof. The water can the be used to cultivate the garden plots or redistributed towards the toilets and other servicing purposes. The roof could theoretically be capable of accomodating photovoltaic cells to service the Garden Club-House or the cafe.

Due to the abundance of rainfall in Northern Ireland this would prove as an effective method to reduce the embodied carbon footprint as well as the energy spenditure on a municipal water supply and reduce the construction time because of the lack of necessary hydration infrastructure and water supply system.

Dieser Wettbewerbsbeitrag stellt ein Ausstellungsstück in einer alten Industriehalle dar. Der Pavillon ist ein Membran, bestehend aus Kortenstahlplatten mit LED-Paneelen, die auf jeweils 1m Abstand spiralförmig aneinander gereiht sind. Es umrahmt das Fokusobjekt mit seiner eleganten und filigranen Konstruktion, die sich Dank sich der periphären Verspiegelung von allen Perspektiven betrachten lässt.

This competition submission depicts a pavillion in an old Industrial hall made up of an array construction of cortenised steel panels with LED-lighting plates to illuminate and retain focus on the exhibition object. The interior perimeter of the hall is lined with mirrors to allow a multiperspective view of this semitransparent framing device.
