THE CATSKILL HEWING

Program: Stone-mason workshop/retreat

Location: The Catskill Moutains Project brief: For this Project, the location was strategically chosen based on the probability of finding exposed stone. I decided to follow a hypothetical scenario that this project is a restoration/ renovation of an abandoned quarry, which I am taking and transforming into a facility for stone carving hence the name “The Catskill Hewing. Much like Peter Zumthors Therme Vals, or Tadao Ando’s Rokko housing and Chichu Art Museum, my project takes advantage of the Delhi Ny’s hills and tries to blend in.

PAVILION OF LIGHT

Program: Pavilion

Location: City Park

Project brief: For this project

I was tasked with designing a pavilion in which we studied light. The program we used for this study was Rhinoceros 3d. For this study I wanted to express the ability of some mesh-like materials to complement natural light. So, using primarily rhino/Enscape and photoshop I was able to create this mesh-like material. I believe it was a successful attempt at imitating the behavior of this material type.

SACRED SPACE

Program: Meditation space

Location: Mountains

Perspective 1

Project brief: For this project I was given a word which I would use as a guideline to lead me down the path to finding my sacred space style. I was given the word “Nested” which is to have a space sit within a space which you could call subspace. That brought me to the Japanese traditional style house which gave off all the feelings I sought out in a sacred space. My definition of sacred space at the end of this exploration was space which felt warm and secluded while simultaneously being surrounded by sounds and people.

PETIOLE PERMEATION

Program: Library

Location: Syracuse, NY

Project brief: For this project, I was tasked with designing and reimagining the SUNY ESF F. Franklin Moon Library, under the guidance of their annual mass timber competition. For this Competition I was to propose an addition to the roof of the existing library which would be built with mass timber products.

TINY HOUSE

Program: Living/Work Space

Location: Catskill Area

Project brief: In the initial studio year, students were assigned the job of selecting artworks from a provided list. These artworks would serve as the basis for creating guidelines for their own projects. For the design of this small house, the artwork selected was “A Renegade Excavation” by Julie Mehretu. The primary objective of this tiny house was to establish a seamless flow of movement, addressing the contrast between organic and angular shapes.
