IDEC student competition task

the design project asks participants with creating a transformative space on a college campus to address the escalating mental health challenges faced by students. Within a compact 50-squaremeter scope, participants must conceptualize and visually represent an innovative installation, considering the diverse needs of neurodiverse, female, non-binary, and minority student demographics. The design should be demountable, adaptable for replication, and incorporate elements of enclosure while pushing the boundaries of traditional spatial concepts. Grounded in extensive research, the submission requires a comprehensive poster presentation, showcasing the design concept, user experience, and evidence-based decisions, adhering to specific judging criteria.

concept The space is inspired by the user’s journey to restoration. Similar to the growth of a desert lily, both prosper in rigid environments. The space allows the user to feel in control of their own growth, and each room in the space resembles a different petal on the flower that the user can explore. Just like the desert lily, each room will serve a purpose in giving strength to our users so they bloom into something resilient, despite the tough environments. This promotes the idea that all obstacles can be overcome.

NEXT student design competition project brief in collaboration with NEXT, a leading global architecture and interior design firm, participants are invited to join a design taskforce for the creation of a new office space in dallas, texas. The challenge is to envision an innovative workplace that not only reflects NEXT’s brand and culture but also caters to the evolving needs of a multigenrational workforce, with a particular focus on Gen Z preferences. with an emphasis on sustainability, diversity, equity, and inclusion, participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from teh local region. the project also involves partnering with steelcase for furnishings, aligning with the company’s commitments to innovation and values. the goal is to design a collaborative, future-focused workplace that enhances global teamwork, accommodates various generations, and becomes a source of pride for employees and the local community.

NE X EX T T concept statement The design concept aims to create a harmonious balance between the active and passive environments, with design intention to seamlessly connect different work areas that embody contrasting atmospheres - from serene and focused to dynamic and disruptive. This interplay between tranquility and vibrancy is manifested through the use of natural-looking materials that are curated to achieve a polished, sleek finish. The central metaphor of the “boardwalk” serves to create a symbolic connection between tranquil, focused areas and the energetic elements to integrate the surrounding urban environment.

By incorporating this metaphor, the design establishes a cohesive narrative within the space, where the various zones are not isolated but rather connected in a purposeful manner. The utilization of natural materials contributes to a sense of authenticity and connection to the natural environment. These materials include wood, stone, and other elements that bring touches of nature, and by modernizing these materials ensures a sleek and contemporary overall appearance, aligning with a sophisticated office environment.
