adolescents. Other disorders, not discussed here, include seborrheic dermatitis (on the scalp), psoriasis, cold sores, impetigo, scabies, hives, and warts.
The integumentary system is susceptible to a variety of diseases, disorders, and injuries. These range from annoying but relatively benign bacterial or fungal infections that are categorized as disorders, to skin cancer and severe burns, which can be fatal. In this section, you will learn several of the most common skin conditions.
Injuries The skin, being the part of our body most directly exposed to the outside world, is particularly susceptible to injuries like burns, wounds, scars, and calluses. These injuries can result from various causes, such as sharp objects, heat, or excessive pressure. The healing process for skin injuries involves several stages. It begins with the formation of a blood clot, which aids in stopping bleeding and eventually forms a scab. Numerous types of cells are involved in this process, especially for extensive repairs. Initially, fibroblasts play a crucial role by rapidly dividing and depositing collagen to form granulation tissue. This is followed by the development of blood capillaries, which enhance blood flow and oxygen supply to the area. Additionally, immune cells like macrophages help
Diseases Skin cancer is a prevalent form of cancer caused by abnormal cell division in the body. Factors like UV radiation due to ozone layer depletion contribute to its occurrence. While melanin provides some protection, it's often insufficient. Cancers can develop in areas not exposed to UV radiation, indicating other factors at play. Cancers arise from DNA mutations, leading to uncontrolled cell growth and potentially tumor formation. While most tumors are harmless, some can spread to other organs (metastasize), a defining feature of cancer.
