Welcome to the Summer Issue of Jolly Tots

So summer is here, hooray! Lots of fun outdoors activity awaits, so get outside with the little ones and have some fun! Sadly though this will be my last issue as editor of Jolly Tots. Although I love working on Jolly Tots and will really miss it, it’s difficult to juggle with my other business, Crafty Monkey. But don't despair, Jolly Tots will live on as I have found the perfect people to take it over.

Caroline, mum to 11-month-old Aiden-James, is an editor of an international magazine and owns her own children’s photography business. She’s so excited to be taking over Jolly Tots and is bursting with ideas for regular features, expansion plans and has a pool of experts eager to engage with mums and their little ones. She’s partnered with Peterborough-based design geniuses, Luke and Joanna Marsh, parents to Alfie and Finley, so get ready for a whole new look! They have a few surprises in store too so stay tuned to see great things! In fact you can get a taste for Caroline's writing style in her review of Ella's Kitchen products on page 21.

While sad to be saying goodbye, I am excited about the new plans I can now put in place with Crafty Monkey. Read on page 10 about Crafty Monkey's monthly 'pop-ups' at One Leisure in Huntingdon and St. Ives, at Flutterbyz Funbarn in Fenstanton and Jungle Jims in Sandy - do come along and say hello! Also in this issue we look at fussy eaters where Emma will provide tips on how to deal with this issue, Jane will be looking at constipation and Jenny covers the issue of safe sleeping. We also have a recipe from Ella's Kitchen’s fab new baking book on page 17. And don't forget to enter into the fab competitions to be in with a chance of winning a spa break for two, a bouncy castle for the day or two Hugless Douglas tickets!

So with a tear in my eye I say farewell to Jolly Tots and I will miss all the lovely readers, advertisers and other people I've got to know. Let's extend a big welcome to Caroline, Luke and Joanna with anticipation of the great things to come!

Wiggle Waggle Hi, I’m Sharon and I run your local WiggleWaggle classes. I would love to welcome you all along to an upbeat, funky session of fun and laughter – right from birth! Children love our funny songs and innovative activities, whilst preschoolers learn all kinds of dance, songs and how to move their bodies with control.

ww.facebook.com/wigglewaggle.sharon www.wigglewagggleonline.com

6

The excitement generated at WiggleWaggle comes from our completely excellent grown-ups. Mums and Dads, Grans and Grandpas join in with the action – creating a sea of giggles, priceless memories (and even a bit of a workout if they want to!) The program covers many areas of the new Early Years Foundation Stage in much more depth than is possible in a typical childcare setting.

Teachers tell us they know who the WiggleWaggle children are, as they are happy and confident in so many areas, particularly PE, Music and Numeracy. Also importantly – WiggleWaggle children are those who are happy to take turns, know how to make circles, can sit and listen, can raise their hand to give an answer and give their friends a round of applause….and skip into school! At the end of each session, we build in time for a cuppa and a play with toys and build friendships with the families that your children will start pre-school with. See advert for contact details and classes. Please come along, you will definitely leave with new friends!

Where learning’s a ball

As Gregory gets older, he becomes increasingly inquisitive about the world around him and asks many, many questions. As a result, my days with Gregory are often filled with the most bizarre conversations imaginable. Many of his queries are genuinely interesting and require intelligent responses (sometimes I can come up with the goods, other times we need to go online!) Just yesterday he asked me whether trees have brains. On telling him that they didn't, he asked how they could be living things without one. We're going to look that one up soon...science isn't my strong subject. Sometimes Gregory's questions (and the logic that follows) are fantastically absurd. An example of this would be when we were strolling to the park last week and he suddenly pipes up, 'Mummy, are there any pink cats in the world?' I told him that I doubted that there are any cats with pink fur, but there are cats without fur and their skin is a pink colour. 'Oh' he said as his little thought process cogs continued to turn. 'Are there any green cats then?' I explained that it was unlikely that you'd ever come across a green cat. As quick as a flash, Gregory retorted, 'But, Mummy, if a cat picked its nose a lot and spreaded all the bogies all over itself, it would be a green cat then, wouldn't it?' There were no wise words that I could offer in relation to this particular unlikely scenario, other than, 'Yes, Gregory, then it would indeed be a green cat...'

Safe Sleeping

By Jenny Barrett

One of the issues that often concerns new parents is how to put their babies down to sleep safely. Some of us are old enough to remember the huge media campaign about cot death (or to give it its more correct title Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) launched in the 1980s by the TV presenter Anne Diamond. The good news is that since then, as a result of awareness of the guidance, the rates of this tragic situation occurring has reduced dramatically. The official guidance from the Department of Health now emphasises the following –

• Place your baby on its back to sleep, in a cot in a room with you • Do not smoke in pregnancy or let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby • Do not share a bed with your baby if you have been drinking alcohol, if you take drugs or if you are a smoker • Never sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair • Do not let your baby get too hot or too cold, keep your baby's head uncovered, and place your baby in the "feet to foot" position (so they can’t wriggle under the covers) • Breastfeed your baby if possible

As we hopefully head into some warmer weather it is also useful to remember that these approaches apply when you are out and about as well as at home. If it is a warm day and you are out in the car, make sure your baby only has light clothing on. Equally if you are in and out of shops make sure your baby doesn’t get too warm when you are inside, remember we can feel when we are too hot and remove a layer of clothing but your babies need you to do that for them. If you have any concerns then you can talk to your midwife or health visitor or look at this website the Infant Sleep Information Source – www.isisonline.org.uk which is an excellent resource of articles and information.

Jenny teaches a range of antenatal classes for local parents. Relax and Breathe St Neots are mums only classes focussing on relaxation and preparing for birth see www.relaxstneots.com. You can enquire about NCT couples classes via www.nct.org. Mantenatal which is just for dads is now run on Saturday mornings in Cambridge – see www.mantenatal.com. Pop Up

Pottery Painting, Build a Bear and Craft Studio, St. Neots

Coming to a town near you...

Crafty Monkey, a Pottery Painting, Build a Bear and Craft studio, based in St. Neots are launching mobile studios at various child centred venues on a monthly basis in the local area making the fun of pottery painting accessible to more people.

3 year old Cara painting a mermaid

Exciting times for Crafty Monkey as they venture into new ‘pop up’ venues.

In the four years Crafty Monkey has been open they’ve welcomed thousands of people of all ages (0-102 year olds!) and abilities to paint pottery and are now looking to reach more of the pre school market with their new ‘Pop-up Crafty Monkey’ plans. Going mobile is not a new thing for Crafty Monkey; they already run a mobile service for parties, visit nurseries, playgroups, schools, groups such as the WI, Brownies, attend craft fairs, shopping evenings and more but this venture will be the start of pop-up Crafty Monkey Studios on a monthly basis at set venues in the vicinity.

10

Fingerprint painting fun for all ages!

The idea is to make pottery painting more accessible to more people. While many parents of babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers visit our studio to paint or do hand and footprints on pottery we are aware that some mums are nervous about bringing their little one into a pottery shop for fear of breakages so by having pop-up studios, mostly in soft play venues this will help to erradicate the fear. The pop ups will take place mid week however anyone is welcome to join in the fun as pottery painting is for all ages. At some venues there will be themes each month but they will also have a range of pottery for those wanting to do something different or perhaps wanting to create a gift or get their little ones hand or foot prints on pottery.

Footprints on pottery make great gifts

The mobile service in Fenstanton, St. Ives and Huntingdon will also help fill a gap since the Godmanchester pottery painting shop closed.

Mobile pop up shops are not the only new thing happening at Crafty Monkey. They are currently searching high and low for bigger premises to move to so they can offer the customer more. They want to have a play area where little ones can play safely (away from the pottery) so mums can relax while painting with an older child or decorating pieces after doing the hand and footprints. They also want a bigger party area with more room for parents to sit while the party is going on and they would like to offer more products. A new product they have started

doing which is proving a hit is clay inprints (see picture below) but in a new venue they will have much more capacity to offer new things so fingers crossed and hopefully watch this space!

Flutterbyz, Fenstanton

Another venue Crafty Monkey love and will be taking their mobile studio to is Flutterbyz Fun Barn at Crystal Lakes, Fenstanton.

POP-UP VENUES

Jungle Jims, Sandy

Being big lovers of monkeys, one of the venues Crafty Monkey will be at is Jungle Jim's in Sandy.

Jungle Jim's is a big soft play centre with free wi-fi access, stylish seating, air conditioning, great food and first class service; you won't want to leave the place! Crafty Monkey love Jungle Jim's (especially the jungle theme being Monkeys and all!) and thinks the whole place is amazing. If you have never been it is definitely worth a day out to visit. Wear the children out and then sit and relax with them painting pottery. Dates: 10th June; 8th July; 12th August; 9th September; 7th October; 11th November; 9th December Time: 10.30am to 3.30pm

Flutterbyz have revamped the old play barn. They have wi-fi, a big soft play area, a three lane slide, a designated baby and toddler area and a front of house cafe. They have also recently opened a new outdoor area so while the sun is shining it’s worth a visit to check it out, afterwhich settle down to a touch of fun painting. This would make a lovely day out with the kids. Dates: 16th June; 21st July; 18th August; 22nd September; 20th October; 17th November Time: 10.30am to 3.30pm

under 5s. So another great place to take the little ones! Dates: Huntingdon: 19th June; 17th July; 21st August; 18th September; 16th October,20th November. Fussy Eaters

Is Your Tot a Finicky Fuss Pot?

Often, at toddler groups and beyond, I had heard the phrase, 'My child will eat anything I put in front of them.' I always smiled and pretended to share in the celebration that their child was a likely contender for the 'Most Adventurous Eater of the Year' competition, but really it always saddened me a little. This is because my son refused to eat anything but a very small selection of foods, which he wanted day in and day out. However, all was not lost as gradually he became much more experimental as I chipped away as his stubborn will with an array of tricks.

My son, although fussy, did enjoy something from most of the important food groups meaning that I was always just about content with his intake of fruit and veg, meat based foods, starchy foods and dairy. If you have any immediate concerns that your child may not be getting their quota of nutrients, then contact your health visitor or doctor for more advice. More information on recommended food types can be found at www.nhs.uk/Change4Life.

In the mean time, if you're simply tearing your hair out because your tot's food seems bland and repetitive, or indeed because you find yourself preparing two (or more) separate meals each time the family eats, then read on for some ideas on how to tempt your fusspot into broadening their food based horizons!

members enjoy different foods. Children will often copy behaviours from an early age and there's no better way to set them on the right track than getting together to eat. Make Meals Look Interesting

If you present a meal consisting of some white fish, mashed potato and cauliflower, then your very white plate contents aren't going to get any tummies rumbling with excitement! Our sense of colour is prevalent in many aspects of our lives and eating food is no exception. If your child's plate looks colourful and interesting, they are more likely to approach it

Eat Together

When possible, eat together at a table as a family. Meal times are sociable occasions, ideal to converse with your loved ones and spend some valuable family time together. This applies, even if it's just you and your child. Children enjoy socialising and feeling that they are part of something important. It is also an ideal set up to show them how meals should be enjoyed and how other family

12

positively. You can even arrange their food to create pictures or patterns. Let them arrange their food themselves and if they wish to handle it, then let them do so (with clean paws!) as table manners can always be taught at a later stage! Keep Smiling!

We all know how difficult it can be to stay positive in the face of meal time adversity, but you must try your best not to make meal times stressful or negative as your child's fussiness might well thrive if met with negative attention! Always present foods as tempting and show how much you and other members of the family are enjoying eating them. If your child resists your suggestions and encouraging comments, do not attempt to force them to eat it as this usually results in them digging their heels in further and it may cause friction! Simply take the food away and move on to the next stage... Judgement

This is tricky. It can be very tempting to remove one food and replace it with another, usually one that you know that they'll eat! There is only one way that this will end and that is, that your child will refuse new foods every time you offer them as they know that they'll get something they like as an alternative. You can give your child a choice of the foods that you want him to try, perhaps if he eats some of one thing, he can then move onto his favourite food. Present foods with different textures and tastes so that he has the option to try what he thinks seems most appealing and then chip away at this as time goes on,

Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/jollytotsmagazine and follow us on Twitter: @JollyTotsMag

introducing more and more. Think about it logically and then mentally turn the tables; if you were presented with a cheeseboard with twenty varieties of the stuff, you'd be in a bit of a fix if you simply did not like cheese in any form! It's a given that most people don't like some foods and sometimes we need to accept that there will be the odd thing that will utterly repel them! However if they have a day where they simply won't try anything, then without a fuss, take their food away, finish yours and carry on as normal. They will soon let you know if they're hungry later on- and they're likely to play ball a little better! Obviously, this won't always be the case, so use your judgement and compromise a little if need be, as mentioned before. They won't let themselves starve, but do contact your health visitor if you feel that they are not eating as much as they should be over a concerning period of time. Snacking and Treats

Yes, you and I may well congratulate ourselves on our healthy appetites with a chocolate cake and custard, but this isn't a great idea for the adventurous-eater-in-training. Firstly, under no circumstances, should you let your child snack on biscuits and other sugar laden things in between meals. You will simply shoot yourself in the foot if they realise that they can fill themselves up on sugar at regular intervals. Not only will they be suppressing their appetite, but they will also get a taste for unhealthy foods and your lovely offerings at dinner time will go unappreciated as they decide to wait for their next chocolate treat instead. Snacks should be offered in the form of fruit or dairy, for example, but never too close to a meal time as

it's important that they arrive at the dinner table having worked up an appetite for obvious reasons. Now, the real question is, how do we reward our children for the wonderful spot of nibbling on new things? A dessert is often seen as a lovely rewarding treat and indeed, it doesn't need to be an unhealthy one as there are all sorts of fruit based puds and exciting yoghurts out there! Again, this is a judgement thing. In our house, our young son has healthy desserts during the week, but is allowed a chocolate treat after dinner at weekends. Sweets and ice creams are OK at parties and on special days out with friends etc, but he knows that he's not going to be allowed to fill up on junk on a daily basis and as we set this rule up early, he knows not to push the boundaries. Rewarding great eating is a fantastic idea...an even better idea is to dish out non edible rewards...

using positive reinforcement. 'Can you manage one last carrot for a special sticker?' whilst whooping and cheering is usually a much better tactic! Keep up the positivity and use it alongside reward systems and you'll soon have a super eater on your hands! One important thing to note- always stick to your word. If they don't try the carrot which is the object that will put them in the running for their reward, they don't get the reward. There may be a wobble, but lay out their options. They will soon learn that they can't beat the system! If your mission seems long and arduous, there's a few more tricks to keep up morale!

Reward Eating

We all know about reward systems and the positive effect they can have on many aspects of a child's behaviour. Think along the lines of filling sticker charts or marbles in a jar and prizes at the end of them! Tempt your child with the prospect of receiving these rewards in whatever form you think is best fitting and remind them as they eat. Use them as goal posts ('just two more peas...'), but never use them alongside negative language as this may have a detrimental effect on your positive meal time and cause a large scale wobble! Avoid threatening your child that they won't get their sticker if they don't eat a carrot, but instead, make their goal into a fun game

Invite Friends to Tea

It's probably a good idea to carefully consider which little pals to gather around the table, as if you invite another bunch of fuss pots, they may well join forces and instigate a food choice protest! If you know any great little eaters (every single other child in the world if you believe all the mums at toddler group!), then recruit them for a social and let them set an example to your finicky child. Again, do be sure to go overboard with encouragement and celebration but take care to avoid any one

child getting all of the attention...the key is to dish out your attentions in varying degrees accordingly, but always positively. It will become easy to judge their reactions to your encouragement as the children copy each other to receive similar praise...it may even bring out a spot of healthy competition! Buy or Make a Face Plate

Look up Fred Mr.Food Plate on www.Amazon.co.uk. This creation is a great idea that makes eating a whole load of fun! It's a very simple item; a dinner plate with a cartoon picture of a man's head on it with basic facial features. You can then allow your child to arrange different foods on the plate to dress his head up. What's not to love about spaghetti hair, broccoli beards and mange tout eyebrows? An even better idea is

to go to you local pottery painting studio and create your own personalised version of a face plate (these can also make great gifts for other fussy eaters!) When using a face plate, you will need to make a deal with your child and agree that they must at least try some of what they choose to use to create their masterpiece. Perhaps take some photos of the artistic process and further ones again as they demolish the implemented foodstuffs!

Remember to keep your meal times as fun and as stress free as possible. If you feel like you're banging your head against a brick wall, carry on regardless and evaluate your methods from time to time. Even if you struggle on through their tot years, you may well find that by the time they get to 'big school', it'll be school

dinners that finally iron out the eating cracks! Keep the faith, they will get there in the end, after all it's unlikely that your child will go on their first date as a teenager and refuse to eat anything but mashed potato with salad cream...

“Ask Jane”

Emma from Cambourne asks:

My toddler suffers with constipation, do you have any advice? Mother to three and owner of six nurseries, Jane and her team are on hand to use their knowledge and pearls of wisdom to answer your questions. If you would like to ask Jane and her team anything relating to raising your children then please get in touch by emailing editor@jollytotsmagazine.co.uk. Disclaimer: The answers given are Jane and her teams opinion and it's always advisable to check with the relevant authorities and the latest guidelines.

Granted it’s not the most appealing of conversations to have with fellow mums, yet constipation in toddlers is surprisingly common. Indeed it is also usual with babies, but whereas this can be due to mainly to medical or dietary reasons, the primary cause of constipation in toddlers is pain while moving the bowels. Toddlers don‘t move their bowels consciously, but the bowels move themselves. The moment consciousness kicks in for whatever reason, that‘s when constipation problems happen… This pain is caused by stools that are either too large or too hard to pass out effortlessly. Hard stools don‘t have to be large to cause pain. After experiencing pain, children will often suppress and withhold stools, which in turn, will make the stools dry out and harden up, making the next bowel movement even more painful. Future incidents of that toddler‘s constipation may then stem from the moment of experiencing that first pain.

So firstly the stools need to be normalised to eliminate any pain. Visit your GP who will firstly rule out any other medical reason for your toddler’s constipation. Your toddler may well be prescribed a mild laxative such as Movicol or Lactulose to soften the stools. Once normalised, changes to your child’s diet and behaviour can be considered. Dietary changes aren't effective for 3/4 of all cases, particularly bearing in mind that, paradoxically, increasing fluid and fibre intake often contributes to constipation. Excess sweet drinks and juices can cause dehydration, leading to a hardening of the stools, while an increase in fibre increases stool size even more. Similarly, dietary fat plays the key role in initiating bowel movements so a reasonable amount of dietary fat should also be provided. Behaviour wise, toddlers are usually far too excited exploring and participating in life to spend time sitting on the toilet so they do have an increased ability to withhold stools. Reward charts are often useful to encourage children against this habit.

In addition the increased levels of activity of a toddler are likely to suppress, rather than to stimulate, the urge to “poo”. So it’s better to try to get your toddler into a regular toilet habit, after breakfast or after tea are usually good times when they don’t feel rushed.

Finally, as with most “training of” children, give your child plenty of praise for achieving a “poo” in the potty or toilet but lightly pass off the accidents. Children easily pick-up on stress or disappointment and then the whole toiling issue becomes fraught. Although it may not seem like it, remember it is only a moment in time! Ella’s Kitchen Review

By Caroline Wilkinson

If I didn’t have a complex about my cooking, I sure do now. I’m no Annabel Karmel by any stretch of the imagination – in fact I’ve been known to burn soup - but I do try to make simple home-cooked meals for my little one. Mealtimes have always been messy fun, even when spoon feeding, but never before have I had such flailing arms, broad smiles and bouncy legs as I did while feeding Ella’s Kitchen. Sure, I’d get the odd whine to tell me to hurry up and, if I’m lucky, confirming ‘m-m-m’ sounds to say ‘mummy, you did good’, but rarely the enthusiasm of a bird-like mouth after each spoonful of Ella’s Kitchen. Poor kid, my cooking must be really bad! Dull or delicious? We swapped our morning oats for Wakey Wakey Strawberry, Mango and Banana Porridge, Veggie Moussaka for tea, fruit smoothies and Yum Yummy Cookies for snacks and desserts. I’m not one to give Aiden anything unless I try it first and let’s just say, when it came to the fruit smoothies in particular I was reluctant to give it up. The Pink One, Purple One and the White One were devoured. Like most packaged fruit products for babies, the fruit base is mostly bananas and apples, but unlike others it really does taste how it’s supposed to, whether that’s pineapple and coconut or cherry and raspberry. At £2.99, and providing about 10-12 portions, the flavoured porridge is a healthy alternative for a quick breakie and Aiden found it tasty.

Texture-wise the smoothies were a hit as Aiden was teething and the puree pouches were easy to eat. He especially loved squeezing the pouch into his mouth, with a bit of help from mum. The main meal, Veggie Moussaka, however, was very chunky. Called Little Big People, the

dish is designed for toddlers over one year old and probably the right consistency for them but for a 10-month-old it had to be broken down a bit more for chewing but it was still manageable and finger-friendly.

Convenience over content The fruit smoothies, like Stage 2 pouches, have screw tops which are great if your little one doesn’t finish the pouch as it can go in the fridge for the next day. The main meals, however, at Stage 3 are quite substantial at 190g/200g and aren’t resealable so you either have to eat at home so you can keep it in the fridge, throw away leftovers or decant some into a travel bowl before leaving the house. I love that the Big Little People meals come in bowls though as it helps support a toddler’s next stage of development. The Yum Yummy Milk and Vanilla Cookies were a huge hit. As an after-nap treat or a pre-dinner pacifier they were great and with only about 1.4g of natural sugars per cookie, it’s a forgivable alternative to homemade baked goods.

What on the label? There’s always an element of trust when it comes to believing manufacturers about what’s in their baby foods. Loopholes let them disguise contents and pad out with bulking agents and water until there’s very little nutritional value. What I like about Ella’s Kitchen is it’s upfront. It tells you the exact percentage of each ingredient, including the water content (which, in the case of Ella’s Kitchen, is nutritional vegetable stock). It tells you what baddies you won’t find inside and the ‘right stuff’ that is; right down to the dash of lemon used for preserving. The allergy icons also tell you at a glance if it’s gluten-free, dairy-free or vegetarian and it’s all organic. I love

Caroline Ann Photography

Does convenience come at an unhealthy cost? Caroline Wilkinson swaps her homemade meals for packaged products, read on to see if Ella’s Kitchen gets mummy’s – and baby’s - seal of approval.

Aiden enjoying Ella’s Kitchen’s goodies

the packaging too; it’s kiddie and parent friendly, brightly coloured to reflect its healthy content and to make it visually engaging for little ones – it definitely caught Aiden’s interest. The main meals spell out how many different vegetables are packed in but not always how many of the five a day it equates to, which would be a benefit, and nowhere does it mention Omegas, which I’d also like to know he’s having.

Final word Now Aiden’s in nursery and my emphasis is on fast feeding solutions on week nights, I’ll definitely be stocking my cupboards with a few Ella’s Kitchen back-ups and smoothies for my handbag. At 79p a pouch, though, they’re a convenient luxury and with main meals for 10 months+ starting at £1.50 and rising to £1.89, the cost can certainly add up. Saying that though, when the occasion arises I’ll have no problem picking up an Ella’s Kitchen pouch knowing that Aiden loves it and the ingredients love him – this is certainly a brand that knows their mummy market. www.ellaskitchen.co.uk

5 Ways to Get Fit for Summer Swimsuit Season

It may not be feeling too warm yet but bikini season is right around the corner. NOW is the perfect time to prepare so you can look your best in your bathing suit. Here's five tips that will have you feeling fun-in-the-sun fabulous.

1

Buy a bikini: Find a gorgeous new swimsuit as motiviation to want to feel your best in it. (For added inspiration, take photos to mark your progress!)

2

Keep yourself in check: Whether by a hand-written diary or a smartphone app, tracking what you eat/drink and your exercise habits will keep you motivated. It can also make you aware of areas that could use some improvement.

Know your ABSs: About a month before you debut your swimsuit, cut out or at lease reduce your intake of alcohol, bread and any processed carbs. This will eliminate hundreds of empty calories from your diet every day.

3

Hike up the H2O: Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day cleanses your system, beats bloat, and helps you feel full - all of which keeps you from loading up on unnecessary calories. (And your skin will look clear and healthy.)

4

Go cardio crazy: increase your cardio to make sure you get at least 30 minutes of heart-pumping exercise (Jazzercise is ideal) three to five times a week, shedding calories as you go!

5

But, probably the most important thing to remember while working to get fit this summer is to aim for progress, not perfection! We're all shaped differently and have individual fitness goals, and striving to feel our healthiest should always be the main motiviator. We have many Jazzercise classes in Peterborough, Huntingdon, St Ives, St Neots, Cambourne, Sandy and other areas. Please go to www.jazzercise.com/find a class and put in your postcode for your closest class details or email jazzercise@btinternet.com.

WHY MUSIC?

Music classes run by properly trained musicians and teachers promote other life skills. There is now strong evidence to show that meeting together to make music definitely helps children prepare for school and in later life. “Music isn’t a gift or a talent, but a language that can be learned by anyone capable of attention, awareness and memory.” If we don’t speak to our children, they will not learn how to talk. If we make music with our children, they will learn that it is something that we personally value.

By taking turns while music making, children learn how to co-operate with others and function in a group. Singing and performing builds up self-esteem and knowledge of a wide range of songs is beneficial to language development as children expand their vocabulary when words are reinforced by actions. In Music for Little People classes we learn approximately 500 new words per term! When the beginnings of notation are introduced a child can see that music is

also organised in the same way as her reading books, reading from left to right and from top to bottom. Maths skills and the sequence of number are reinforced by number songs and counting games and music can also play a significant role in teaching us an understanding of the world through songs and stories from other cultures. Learning to play any instrument, including percussion, involves control and helps develop physical and manipulative skills. Finger rhymes and action songs also give plenty of opportunity for refining motor skills and co-ordination. When moving to music in an eurhythmic way, children develop co-ordination and an awareness of space and others. It is also a great way to help children express their creativity enabling them to develop the ability to use their imagination, listen and observe through art, music, dance, stories and imaginative play.

MUSIC FOR LITTLE PEOPLE classes are available in various locations in Cambridgeshire - for more information about classes near you visit www.musicforlittlepeople.co.uk The classes were founded in 1996 by Karen Dickinson who has a Masters Degree in Music Education from the Institute of Education, London University and a Diploma in Music Education from Trinity College of Music. Karen is also looking for enthusiastic teachers to help fulfill the demand for classes.

Plant Pot Painting

By Heidi McFadyen

What you need:

• Terracotta plant pot (any size) • Acrylic paints • Paint brushes • Apron

Instructions:

1. Cover your work surface with old newspaper, and ensure your children are wearing old clothes or a painting apron. 2. Now they're ready to paint their pot, let the children be as imaginative as possible after all, it’s their creation! They won’t need to paint all the way down on the inside just to the bottom of the rim. They can be as creative as they like- they could paint spots, stripes, flowers a face or even just paint freely to make a colourful pot. 3. Wash and dry the brushes and clean the table. Encourage your child to help with this. 4. Once the plant pot is dry encourage your child to fill the plant pot with soil and then plant some seeds (or a bulb) and wait for it to grow! Don’t forget to keep it watered. Please note young children should be supervised carefully when using acrylic paint.
