JFS COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT 2021/2022
UpliftingLives

Vision: Lives uplifted, a world repaired.

Values:

We welcome everyone. We honour the individual journey. We are courageous and creative. We take pride in our work. We care deeply about people.

Leadership Message

75 years ago, in response to the atrocities of the Second World War, global leadership developed a Universal Declaration of human rights. It was a map that was intended to be the foundation for peace, justice, and freedom.

From the perspective of a social service agency, 2021/22 was a story of the world often turning a blind eye to the values of that declaration; a year filled with instability and inequality. As we stood on the front line with over 3,000 people, we watched as those same people suffered through injustices and struggled to make ends meet. However, just as the most beautiful flower can blossom in adversity, our community’s commitment, hope, and partnerships showed us how to practice Tikkun Olam and stay true to our values.

Over 500 staff and volunteers worked tirelessly toward building a safe space and equitable systems to support the most vulnerable in our community as they found their voice and accessed needed services. While many of the challenges of a post-pandemic reality were outside our control, nevertheless, we had the responsibility to consider our role as a leader in the community, assess the way we provide services, and be the change we wanted to see.

Many days were hard and challenged us to search for meaning in small things. The opportunity to

watch the smiles on children’s faces while sharing a meal prepared at the Kitchen, receive gratitude from a woman who could safely stay in ASTEH for a year, or hear the relief of a Ukrainian family who now had access to basic needs allowed us to get through the hard days. It was in those moments that we continued to be inspired to uplift lives and repair the world.

Each of the moments we cherish are the result of your leadership and willingness to step forward and ask "How can I help?" In your actions, we saw the gestures of community care, passion, and love. In your actions, we saw the future – the future of human connection and strong community.

As Rabbi Sacks said, “The most important forms of leadership come not with position, title or robes of office, not with prestige and power, but with the willingness to work with others to achieve what we cannot do alone…” Yes, he spoke about all of you! Our goals would only be dreams without your support. Todah

City of Vancouver Honors JFS with Healthy City Award

JFS received the Healthy City for All Award in May from the City of Vancouver. Proud to be amongst notable award winners, JFS was recognized for its response to the food security issues brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only was JFS the only food program to transition their grocery and meal program to 100% delivery, we also opened the JFS Kitchen in Mount Pleasant, enhancing the food security model in real-time to better serve community needs in crisis. This award reflected the incredible dedication of JFS board members, staff, volunteers, and community partners eager to help keep our doors open and programs operational. We are grateful to the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver for the nomination.

JFS Celebrates 85 Years

In October 2021, JFS welcomed over 100 guests to the iconic Heritage Hall to celebrate 85 years in the community. It was a meaningful evening for honourary guest, Shirley Barnett – JFS Lifetime Achievement Award winner, former JFS Board Member, past President and Executive Director, community leader, and philanthropist. Throughout her tenure in various leadership roles, Shirley displayed wisdom and depth of service.

“Shirley initiated a number of new programs. She significantly expanded our capacity to serve the community and substantially upgraded our fundraising capacity. She has and continues to make a profound difference for our agency,” remarks Tanja Demajo, JFS CEO.

The evening also welcomed Karen Malone, Founder of LitPark and ESG leader, who shone a light on JFS’s resiliency and sustainability, especially during the pandemic. “JFS is an agency that has led by example,” said Malone. In the beginning, founded at the height of the Great Depression and during the rise of Nazism, JFS helped so many of those fleeing Europe to re-root and start a new life. Eight decades later, JFS has persevered, continuing to be a place people can turn to in their time of need. Having proven itself resilient and responsive, JFS stands strong today, and that is worthy cause for celebration.

Painting a Sense of Belonging

As an immigrant to Canada, Japanese artist and poet Emiko Venlet created “A Sense of Belonging” outside of the JFS Kitchen as part of the Vancouver Mural Festival, after feeling a strong connection to JFS’ culture and values.

This piece was an important one for Emiko, as this was her very first mural. Her vision of painting the outside walls to emanate a feeling of acceptance and belonging echoes the same intention we have for our clients and community members when they are inside the JFS Kitchen walls. We are extremely grateful to have a beautiful piece that shares a wonderful message.

OUR MISSION

Guided by the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), JFS supports the social, physical, and emotional wellness of all people.

11

Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

Inclusion and diversity are among our core values. For JFS, serving the community with the lens of inclusion and diversity means stepping into the unknown and being humble about our budding understanding, asking questions and learning, and creating a welcoming and trusting environment for our clients, staff, and volunteers.

Twice Blessed 2.0: The Jewish LGBTQ2SIA+ Initiative

Across all of the JFS organizational levels is the commitment to better understand the needs and experiences of people in our community so that we can better serve them and advocate with them. With that goal in mind, JFS partnered with JQT and the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver for Twice Blessed 2.0: The Jewish LGBTQ2SIA+ Initiative. The resulting 13 calls to action reflect the needs of Jewish LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals in Greater Vancouver, and highlight the necessary first steps in order to make JFS and other Jewish community spaces more welcoming, inclusive, and accessible.

We invite you to read and share the online version of the Twice Blessed 2.0 report found at www.jqtvancouver.ca/twice-blessed-2

Inclusion of Clients’ Voices

When the Client Advisory Committee was formed in 2019, our intention was to create opportunities for people we serve to share with us what works and what doesn’t. One of the recommendations was to improve communication and provide more regular updates. As a result, we launched a monthly Clients’ Newsletter fully planned and written by a client. This communication tool has shown to be a great vehicle to connect clients with our programs and services in a way that is inclusive, consistent, accessible, and clear.

In partnership with the Federation, we also hired Mara Shnay to conduct “Hear Us, We are Here,” a research project focused on homelessness in our community. Through this project we learned more about what the housing crisis is like for our community members, and developed a list of recommendations for changes in services.

Truth & Reconciliation

History can be a heavy burden; only when we discuss and challenge past ideas and policies can we create space for healing and a path to move forward. Understanding the history of Indigenous communities and our own role as settlers is essential for creating relationships with the land, local cultures, and each other.

In September 2021, we welcomed Karen Joseph, a Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw social change-maker from Reconciliation Canada, who took JFS staff through an experiential learning session about the history of Indigenous people in Canada and our responsibilities in the process of reconciliation.

Strengthening Partnerships to Improve Services for Holocaust Survivors

In January, JFS launched a new partnership with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC) with the goal to integrate and improve services provided to survivors. JFS centralizes and oversees the BC grant process for the Jewish Conference Claims Grant. By placing a JFS case manager at VHEC one day per week, this partnership has increased access to social services, socialization programs, and resources among the Greater Vancouver survivor population.

In order to make meaningful change in our community and improve people’s lives, we constantly ask the question “How can we serve you better?”

individual journeys is what helps us grow, learn, and provide more holistic and better services.

Counselling: Women Empowerment

Throughout COVID, the number of women and children inquiring about counselling services doubled. In response, a new therapist, Dr. Abby Wener Herlin, joined our team to focus on working with individuals experiencing gender-based violence. Through individual and group work, Abby supports clients by working with them to explore topics about confidence, leadership, and self-expression.

Supporting Ukrainians Fleeing the War

Thanks to funding provided through the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, JFS was able to quickly mobilize to support Ukrainian families escaping the war. So far, this funding has allowed 30 Ukrainian families to access JFS programs and services, including assistance in navigating government services, including health care and legal aid, and in connecting with other local community services.

15

Food Security & Sovereignty–the What and the How

The JFS Food Security Department strives to cultivate good health and a sense of belonging for all people by offering dignified access to eating, learning about, and sharing nutritious foods. What we envision is a community connected and strengthened by food.

Food Services Infrastructure

Over the last few years, we have been working on developing technological tools that supports our work more effectively while also providing clients with opportunities to make personal choices about the food they need. With the support and skills of former JFS board member, Stan Shaw, and funded by the Jewish Community Foundation, we have developed a new and unique application called F.O.O.D. The application allows clients to place grocery orders based on their needs and health restrictions, helps coordinate volunteers drivers, keeps track of our food distribution, and manages our food inventory.

Vancouver Jewish Community Garden

In June, Congregation Beth Israel (CBI), Jewish Family Services (JFS), and Vancouver Talmud Torah (VTT) announced their joint initiative to build the first Jewish Community Garden in Vancouver. The vision for the project is to create a shared gathering place to celebrate and honour nature and its bounties, all with principles rooted in Jewish teachings and values. We are grateful to the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver for its Transformation Grant, to the Diamond Foundation for temporarily loaning the land to this project, and to the Ronald S. Roadburg Foundation for their generous seed gift.

Learning Hub

JFS partnered with UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems and welcomed the first student cohort at the Kitchen. The project was focused on education and explored the difference between food security and food sovereignty. While JFS’s goal is to build a food secure community, it is equally important to us that we achieve this goal while ensuring dignity and sustainable practices.

Alison 20 JFS Community Impact Report 2021/22
“I feel empowered. I feel strong. And I feel courageous. All of which I couldn’t have done without the angels along the way. Thank you to all of you!"

One Sunday morning, a community member called on behalf of Alison*. “Alison has to leave right now and she has no safe place to go to with her kids.”

That’s how Alison’s journey of leaving an abusive relationship started.

She didn’t tell many people about what was going on; Alison felt embarrassed and ashamed. For 17 years, things seemed “normal” from the outside and at the time, she was terrified that people wouldn’t believe her or would think of her as “overly dramatic.”

All the odds were against her. Alison’s income was not enough to cover the cost of living, and she had no savings or family to rely on. But she did have determination and a clear vision of the future she wanted for her children. That was enough to change the direction of her and her children’s lives.

When she finally had the courage to open up to JFS, she knew that she had made the right decision. Alison was connected with a case manager who listened to her, made her

feel validated, and helped start her on a path to independence. With the support of JFS, Alison was able to receive income assistance, housing, and counselling for her and her children.

Today, she feels secure and hopeful. Alison now lives in a three-bedroom apartment with her children, who are all enrolled in nearby schools. She no longer worries about whether the rent will be paid, or if there will be food in the fridge. She knows that her children are safe, and that they have a place to call home every day. Instead of worrying about her future, she is now planning for it.

Her family is finally on a path of growth. While things can be difficult at times, they have the time to “heal, get healthy, and move forward” together.

Michael

22 JFS Community Impact Report 2021/22
“Things are awesome. I feel like I have a very bright future, stable safe housing, my finances are good and my quality of life has improved dramatically."

Michael* was 25 when he first came to JFS. At the time, he recognized that he needed help – he couldn’t work, maintain relationships, or keep housing. As a result, Michael had no income and no place to live. From there, he spiraled down into chronic homelessness which further impacted his ability to use healthy coping skills in stressful situations.

It took over a year for Michael to be connected with a mental health team. Once he was, things started to look more positive for him; he was temporarily housed as well. It felt like things were going well for him until he experienced another mental health crisis which led him to lose his housing and he ended up homeless again.

“I felt quite vulnerable to be on the streets and I needed a hand up.”

After 10 years, Michael came back to JFS, but also reached out to other community agencies. “I was trying to get motivated and resolve issues in my life, including finances and my quality of life.”

Michael had faced rejection many times, so he needed time to build rapport and trust with his care manager. While he was in and out of shelters, Michael kept coming to JFS daily to check in. With the support of his care manager, he was temporarily housed until the opportunity for long-term housing arose.

“Once I moved into permanent housing, I realized that I had the opportunity to change my life and future.”

There are still many things that Michael finds triggering, but conversations with his care manager helped him realize that he needed more support for his mental health. Once he accepted that, Michael was ready to act on it; he connected with a JFS mental health outreach worker, got started on new medication, and started to proactively reach out whenever he needs support.

Mental health challenges are often unpredictable and can create chaos and turmoil. For people like Michael, good mental health support offers the structure and predictability that is required to build a more stable life.

Thriving Seniors

"The Thriving Seniors program is something I look forward to, as it provides insightful information to so many important topics that seniors may not otherwise have access to."

A Place of Connection

One of the strengths of JFS services is the fact that they are designed in partnership with program recipients. Our staff play a significant role in each client’s life and their individual journeys. As such, we are committed to honouring their needs and lived experience in order to create a more inclusive environment.

Over one-third of JFS clients are seniors. As the Seniors Community Outreach Coordinator, Tamar Stein oversees and supports a Senior Leadership Team that has been the creative force behind the program. “Thriving Seniors programs are available at no cost to our older clients. Through a grant from Vancouver Coastal Health, we focus on creating opportunities for seniors to connect and engage with each other in ways that support mental health and overall well-being.”

Different programs, from cultural to educational events, are offered both in-person and online to address the issue of service accessibility for our seniors. This approach creates a sense of inclusion and an acknowledgment of seniors’ differing realities. Thriving Seniors offers something to every senior.

“In 2012, I made a decision to take a larger role in giving back to my community and JFS was the clear choice for me. JFS is an amazing team of “doers” whose mission of Tikkun Olam plays such a crucial role in so many ways and to so many people, in particular in the areas of mental health and food security. I have supported JFS loudly and proudly as the Co-Presenting Sponsor of the annual Innovators Lunch every year from 2013 to 2022 and I look forward to partnering with JFS for many years to come. Thank you JFS for being a lifeline to the many vulnerable members of our community.”

Everything Old is New Again

Watching Michelle Dodek in the Kitchen preparing for the virtual community cooking class fundraiser was very special. When it became clear that the plans for an in-person Innovators Lunch needed to be cancelled, the question became “What now?”

Michelle led the way and ensured that no matter the challenges, we would create an event that would help provide necessary funding so our clients would continue to receive needed services, whether food, counselling, or emergency support.

Innovation comes in many forms. Michelle’s intention for the virtual cooking class was to change the way we think about food. She took her Baba’s recipe for knishes made the traditional way with stretched dough, and transformed it into a healthy, filling, vegan snack. While sharing her family story she also touched on key issues of food security, sustainability, and affordability.

Michelle was there for JFS and the community when we needed her the most. For us, she moved mountains. Thank you Michelle!

“JFSA helped me through a very ugly time with my ex-husband. My care manager worked with me through this difficult period of my life, helping with temporary housing, food assistance, counselling. I committed myself then to giving back when I could. And now, I can give back.”

"When my spouse and I first immigrated to Vancouver, we had JFS and the Food Bank's support. It emotionally and economically helped us a lot. The people at the Food Bank were great and welcoming. Now that we are settled and have the economic ability, we hope to continue our yearly support.”

THRIVE WORKSHOP ATTENDEE

Gratitude and Monthly Mitzvah Giving

Rabbi Rokie Bernstein is a rabbi and maggid, a storyteller and inspirational speaker. 20 years ago, her first connection to JFS sparked when she asked herself, “How can I help; what can I do?”

She has made her love of human connection and stories part of her support of JFS, more recently partnering with JFS to lead a monthly book club for clients.

Her underlying philosophy is to be grateful for the chance to learn compassion and kindness. To prospective monthly donors she says, “I can’t imagine anybody who has had a chance to be generous who wouldn’t feel warm and fuzzy inside after giving. Once you open your heart, it’s open.”

We Care Deeply About People

Jewish tradition teaches us the importance of humanity and its role in building a more just world. This comes with the obligation to act, help, and make change. JFS is a beautiful intersection of community members who want to act on their responsibility of Tikkun Olam, and community members who have found a place to ask for help. Volunteers are at the very heart of JFS.

Over 20,000 hours of community service is provided annually to our most vulnerable community members. Whether the goal is to pack and deliver food to a community member, teach someone who is isolated how to use a tablet, organize an event, or offer a conversation to a client, over 350 volunteers serve as a lifeline for JFS clients.

Our Volunteer Appreciation event in June was a small token to honour of all of those quiet heroes. As Rabbi Tendler said: “We came together to celebrate all of you today. We acknowledge that the work you do, the time and energy you generously offer, and the ideals which you commit yourselves to are holy and you become heroes to those who you reach out to.”

Thank you for your time, energy and care. Together, we continue to build more hopeful tomorrows, and foster friendships and connections within our community.

46 JFS Community Impact Report 2021/22

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

Melissa

Once a week, Melissa spends time at The Kitchen assisting with food prep and packaging for the Meal Delivery program. These ‘home-cooked” dishes are handmade, and delivered weekly to provide seniors and individuals with limited physical abilities with healthy, nutritious meals. Melissa enjoys helping at The Kitchen, and is no stranger when it comes to connecting the community through food. Melissa began learning her food skills through the Bagel Club, a social enterprise through the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC). When the pandemic happened, she used her knowledge and experience to help the JCC chef prepare premeasured foods with cooking instructions that were delivered to participants of a virtual cooking class.

When Melissa’s mother heard about The Kitchen, she knew that it would be a great fit for her. Melissa’s WorkBC employment counsellor connected with Carol Hopkins, JFS’ Food Security Operations Coordinator, and Melissa has been at The Kitchen ever since. Melissa’s ties to giving back go further than building community; it continues to enhance her own life as well.

Volunteering has played a part in Melissa’s personal and professional growth this past year. Spending time at The Kitchen reinforces her work skills, including goal-setting and socializing. Helping distribute meals to the community makes her feel good but also helps her build relationships with other volunteers and staff. “I really enjoy helping the cause, the community.”

Melissa is an amazing example of what happens when you help the communityit rewards you back in a multitude of ways.

Jewish Federation: Outstanding Community Partner

With each passing year, the Federation helps JFS continue to bring enhanced programs and projects to the community. Shelley Rivkin, Vice President, Local and Global Engagement for the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver notes that the role of the Federation has evolved “…to a role where we collaborate [with JFS] on identifying new and emerging social issues that impact community members, explore possible projects and/or best practices that address these issues, and then work together on implementation.”

With shared values and priorities, our organizations have been able to introduce notable initiatives in the past year which

include responding to the Ukraine temporary visitor program, youth support training with the Jewish Community Centre (JCC), food programs for children and youth, and a focus on “Hard to House.”

“We demonstrate to our community how we are at our best and most effective when we can each bring our respective skills and strengths to the table and explore solutions equitably and collectively.” – Shelley Rivkin

Together, we are strengthening programs, relationships, and the greater community. We are so grateful for amazing partnerships like this one.

Employee Reflections 2021-2022

Carol

"The past few years have been interesting, challenging, and yet tremendously rewarding. Our team has seen growth in services and clients, and has started many new programs, which I've been fortunate to help with. I feel privileged to be part of the Vancouver JFS team, which includes staff, our dedicated volunteers, and various community partners - all of whom continue to work tirelessly to support the food security needs of our community."

Chris

"Our dedicated volunteers and donors have helped put food on people's tables and provided medical financial aid for seniors. Because of our supporters, JFS can help people navigate through life difficulties and alleviate the pain people would suffer. I'm grateful JFS is filling a gap in our community."

Irina

"Having played a key role in organizing the big office move, including setting up the new offices and managing two offices during the transition, as well as working full-time through a pandemic, the last three years were intense and challenging to say the least. But I love the variety of admin work and find it very rewarding working for an Agency that helps people."

Tamar

"I love working at JFS and knowing I am making a difference in people’s lives. Working for JFS as the Seniors Community Outreach Coordinator has given me the opportunity to bring resources and community to our senior clients. Our workshops, presentations, and programs are more than just the relaying of important information, they also build community and connections among our senior clients and with the greater community."
