In the same way that Swedish Christmas meals have to include ham, Jokkmokk’s market has its reindeer meat soup. In most homes the soup simmers on the stove throughout the entire market. So that guests from afar eat something warm and filling after the long journey to Jokkmokk.

Fia Kaddik is from Ammarnäs and is both an artisan and a photographer. She has lived and worked in Jokkmokk now for quite a number of years. She really likes Jokkmokk’s Market and calls herself a traditionalist.

– No matter how much I have to do, on Thursday, the first day of market I boil 20 litres of reindeer meat soup for my guests, Fia Kaddik says.

This Market Fia Kaddik, winner of the Asa Kitok Award from the Sámi Handicraft Foundation will have an exhibition in the Sámi-Duodji building. For those fascinated by handicraft, revealing who will be granted this year’s Asa Kitok Award is a market tradition and the opening of the exhibit is a highlight. The award was created to honor the legendary artisan Asa Kitok. It is the only such award in all Scandinavia. Asa Kitok is famous for having saved Sámi root weaving for future generations.

The award was given to Fia Kaddik for her work with root basket weaving.

Fia learned how to gather roots and weave with them from her grandmother and her mother. But it was not until she studied crafts at the Sámi Adult Education Centre that she became serious about working with roots, when she had Asa Kitok’s daughter as a teacher.

When she completed the course Ellen gave her a root woven article.

– She told me she gave me the thingamajig and made me promise I wouldn’t allow root weaving to die out. And of course if someone as acknowledged as Ellen is for her root weaving compliments my work, it is very encouraging.

Nowadays Fia herself teaches root weaving at the Sámi Adult Education Centre.

Although for the moment she has her hands full with all her work for the exhibit and the market. The exhibit will be called “sjáragärrge” which means a round stone polished by running water in Piteå Sámi. “I think we humans are a lot like those stones, as the waters of life eventually polish us, making us softer. At least I am like that stone, tumbled and smoothed by life itself,” Fia Kaddik admits.

In a chapter of ”Harald Hårfagres saga” (the Tale of Harald Hårfagres) Snorre predicts Harald’s relationship to Snøfrid, the young Sámi woman who was daughter to the ”Sámi king” Svåse. The Norwegian king Harald, who was later known as ”Hårfagre”, became so obsessed by his love for the beautiful Snøfrid that he neglected his kingly duties and married her and settled down among the Sámi. Looking for the Sarek moose

”Protected from the yearly moose hunt, the moose in Sarek grow larger than those outside the park. During the winter, they migrate down to the forest areas east of the Sarek National Park where they find food and protection from the tough winter climate in the mountains. Accompany us in a van where we take you to some of the favourite places the moose have. Gathering place: In front of Hotel Akerlunds.

”Protected from the yearly moose hunt, the moose in Sarek grow larger than those outside the park. During the winter, they migrate down to the forest areas east of the Sarek National Park where they find food and protection from the tough winter climate in the mountains. ”Protected from the yearly moose hunt, the moose in Sarek grow larger than those outside the park. During the winter, they migrate down to the forest areas east of the Sarek National Park where they find food and protection from the tough winter climate in the mountains. Things you should know about BUSES

We recommend coming by bus to Jokkmokk’s Market.

Not only do you avoid getting into a cold car and fighting the traffic, it is also better for the environment! There are chartered buses from a number of locations in Norrbotten as well as from other cities in Sweden. You can also check out the regular bus schedule on Länstrafiken’s home page: www.ltnbd.se, tel. +46 771-100 110. Be aware of the fact that during the market (Wednesday through Sunday – January 31- Feb. 4) the only stop it makes is at the bus station.

Parking places for the handicapped are available, but cannot be booked ahead of time. Call +46 971-222 50.

Please respect the locations where you are not allowed to park and watch out for stop signs to avoid problems.

REINDEER CARAVAN

Do not miss the traditional reindeer caravan with the Kuhmunen family. It traverses the market area on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It stops by the market snow stage in the middle of the market area between 12 noon and 12:30 pm, depending on the crowds.
