President’s Desk To the uncommon community of Johnson University: As we resume the fall semester, the campuses are bustling with energy as students begin their classes and other activities. In spite of the need for COVID-19 precautions such as masks, social distancing, and vaccines, the students are eager to engage in campus life. Our two priorities continue to be the health, safety, and well-being of all our community members and the longterm sustainability of our institutional mission. We are grateful for God’s sustaining power and protection and continue to make the best decisions possible as we trust in him. “Faith, prayer, and work” is more than a slogan—we have learned anew in the face of this difficult season that it is a way of life.

I would like to thank all of you who have supported Johnson University with your prayers, encouraging words, and financial resources. Words cannot express my full gratitude, but please know that we express our thanks to God for you every day in our prayers.

In the words of the Apostle Paul in Philippians 1:3-7a: I thank my God in all my remembrance of you; always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace.

This has been especially true in your response to our Uncommon Community capital campaign. As of September 30, 2021, we have received $15.9 million toward our $24.5 million goal. We look to finish well the final 30 months of the campaign and trust in God’s supply and the encouraging generosity of our faithful supporters.

This issue focuses anew on Johnson’s mission to extend the kingdom of God among nations with an emphasis on our missions and intercultural studies programs. Johnson has a long,

amazing history of sending graduates and alumni to the mission field. In this issue we celebrate those who have gone before us blazing the way and those who are currently on the front lines of communicating the gospel of Jesus to the whole world.

As you read this issue, please consider your own commitment to world evangelism and listen to the encouragement of our founder, Ashley S. Johnson, who wrote: “When you begin and pray one unselfish prayer for the extension of Christ’s Kingdom and that you may be the humble instrument of working for Him, a new sun will arise on your pathway and you will have an influence at the Throne of Plenty.”

Johnson University is a “Great Commission university.” God’s mission to reach out to a struggling world and draw everyone from every culture into a holy and righteous relationship with him is our mission, too. We take the directive from God to reach the lost as our call and our responsibility in love.

Did you know Johnson University offers a fully online Certificate of Intercultural Studies completely in the Russian language? Johnson partnered with Tavriski Christian Institute in Kherson, Ukraine to offer courses and mission preparation they would not otherwise be able to offer. In recent years, 82 students have enrolled in the program and are reaching out to their own communities along with the surrounding countries of Georgia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russia, and others. These students are moving into highly hostile environments for the Lord and Johnson is pleased to partner with TCI to equip them for the ministry.

PIONEER BIBLE T R A N S L AT O R S As a way of successfully expanding the reach of our graduates and associates, Johnson University has partnered with several organizations. For example, in 2012, Johnson University received accreditation approval for fully online intercultural studies (missions) programs and began a partnership with Pioneer Bible Translators to facilitate the training, equipping, and preparation of recruits, as well as to expand the education of missionaries already on the field. Nearly 2,000 language groups

do not have the Bible in their language and do not have a viable church community among their language groups.

Translating the Bible, planting churches, and providing much-needed community development assistance became the growing focus of the partnership. Now, during this uncertain time of pandemic, students can choose to come to one of the campuses and

prepare for the field or stay at home and learn online. Pioneer Bible Translators is aggressively and systematically focusing on providing Scripture and planting churches for the least-reached of these people by the year 2050. Johnson University is providing the education as new recruits prepare to go to the field.

B EKA H OCHS Class of ’19 Bekah Ochs lived in Ghana for a year during high school, and she saw the need for better communication between missionaries and supporters.

“Missionaries often say, ‘I was called to the mission field to do ministry, not create newsletters,’” she says. “But I love connecting stories from the field with the supporters who need to hear them.”

Bekah knew she wanted to use her communication skills to build these bridges between the senders and the sent, and she was surprised to discover that Johnson University had a degree designed especially for this type of work.

“No other school I looked at offered this,” she says. “At best, you could try to create a customized degree or do a double major. But Johnson offered the cross-cultural media communication program along with courses in Bible, theology, and other aspects of intercultural studies. I knew this was the place for me.”

Today, Bekah works as a storyteller and photographer for New International in the media department, helping 240 missionary families around the world tell their stories to the state-side churches and individuals supporting them. She completes much of this work from her home in Knoxville, with frequent visits to missionaries and to New International’s home office in Florida.

“I write corporate pieces, edit newsletters, and take photos as opportunities arise,” she says.

“Missions isn’t just about going overseas, and it’s an honor to help people connect with missionaries, hear their stories, and pray for their work.”

KAYLA H EF N ER Class of ’22 Kayla Hefner felt the call to mission work when she was 16 years old, but she began college at Johnson University Florida with no plans to pursue ministry.

“I came to college to play volleyball and study business,” she says. “My sister majored in business, and although I was interested in intercultural studies, I chose to follow her path for the first two years of college.”

During the pandemic, Kayla says she had time to reconsider her goals and how God was working in her life.

“I was in a discipleship group with Dr. Howells Douglas, and we prayed for missionaries and mission organizations,” she says. “The next step was talking to missionaries, considering a mission trip, and finding answers to my questions about how you raise money and what it’s like to live in another country.”

Kayla switched her major and spent this past summer completing an internship in Jordan.

“I had no expectations about the experience because it all happened so quickly,” she says. “I was supposed to do the internship in Japan and couldn’t

go because of COVID. At the last minute I was able to go to Jordan, and there God showed me the beauty of its culture and its people. I especially appreciated the spirit of hospitality and the way the people take time for each other. That is something I brought back with me.”

Kayla graduates in May and hopes to return to Jordan next summer. She is considering a master’s degree in counseling with the goal of eventually becoming a cross-cultural therapist.

“It’s easier now to say yes to the unknown,” she says. “I know God is faithful.”

A LYSSA & IA N D UG G ER Class of ’20 and ’19 While this couple began their journey separately, they found their calling— and found each other—at JUFL. They married in 2020 and moved to the Dominican Republic after their honeymoon to work as field coordinators with Casas por Cristo.

Ian, who graduated in 2019 with a degree in intercultural studies, first connected with Casas through an assignment.

“We had to interview a missions agency representative, and I decided to do the interview while I attended the International Conference on Missions,” he says. “Casas was the first exhibit I saw in the exhibit hall, so I asked to interview them. But the more we talked, the more I asked questions for me instead of just completing the assignment. I did an internship with them in Juarez that summer, did a second internship in Acuña the following summer, and applied for a job my senior year.”

Alyssa graduated a year later with a degree in missions and was excited to join the work after their wedding.

“I wanted to empower local churches, and I loved that principle in Casas por Cristo’s philosophy,” she says.

“I always wanted to work crossculturally, and Johnson prepares students to do that in a helpful way including study of different religions, perspectives, and cultures. We studied how Jesus connected with people and how that needs to affect our own approach to other cultures.”

“We’re both really passionate about doing more help than harm,” Ian says.

“Our coursework focused on serving holistically in practical ways, and it helped us find the right ministry where we could serve.”

A MAN DA & SIMBA RAS HE N YA MU TOR A Class of ’18 Simberashe Nyamutora grew up in Zimbabwe, where his parents served with Steve and Linda Whitmer during their missionary service in the country. When it was time for college, Simberashe knew he wanted to work in ministry, and he knew Johnson—where the Whitmers led the intercultural studies program—was the place for him.

Simba graduated from Johnson in 2018 with a degree in cross-cultural media communication and today serves as a video production coordinator at Brookside Community Church/ Brookside Community Development Corporation in Indianapolis. His wife, Amanda, who graduated from Johnson with a double major in intercultural studies and English as a Second Language education, works as an ESL teacher at Crispus Attucks High School in the Indianapolis public schools.

“We believe mission work starts by serving our local community,” Simbarashe says. “Brookside’s mission is creating opportunities for renewal and transformation for people in the neighborhood. Brookside carries out this mission by helping individuals reenter society from incarceration, reversing the effects of trauma through a play-based program for kids, and providing stable housing for those experiencing generational poverty. In my role, I love sharing the stories of how God has transformed people’s lives.

By sharing our stories of restoration with each other, we can create a unified, diverse community that our city desperately needs.”

The Nyamutoras also believe in living intentionally in their neighborhood, a value they gained from their experience in Johnson’s Urban Plunge program.

They live in an apartment complex where many refugees have been placed by the local refugee resettlement agency.

Along with their close friends, they have enjoyed serving this community by coordinating a children’s VBS and family movie nights.

“We hope to someday serve overseas,” Amanda says. “But for now, we are blessed to serve the city of Indianapolis.”

Jill wanted to study journalism at Indiana University, not intercultural studies at Johnson.

“I wanted to do, through journalism, what we now call public theology,” she says.

“Since women weren’t allowed to be preachers, writing was to be my platform. I realized in my first year at IU that I couldn’t hold my own in defending my faith to the political science majors. I hadn’t had enough exposure to people with different beliefs.

I decided to attend Johnson for just one year, and ended up making wonderful friends while also realizing the need for more study. I completed my degree in missions in 1984.”

Soon after graduation, Jill moved to Zimbabwe to teach in high schools.

She planned to stay for three years. She actually stayed for thirteen.

“The initial experience was like a three-year internship,” she says. “The wonderful headmaster guided me well.

After that, I worked with more than 30 churches teaching, discipling, and leading youth Bible studies and retreats in and around Mashoko Christian Mission and at Zimbabwe Christian College in Harare.”

Jill lived in Zimbabwe during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s as well as the devastating famines that hit Africa during that time.

“I never learned how to coordinate famine relief at Johnson!” she says.

“But through the hospital, a network of schools, and even the help of a local radio personality, we managed to feed 16,000 children for six months.”

Jill completed a graduate degree at Cincinnati Christian University in 1995 and attempted to return to her home in Zimbabwe, but the country had stopped approving work permits for internationals.

“I’d never gotten residency, but I had planned to spend the rest of my life there,” she says. “When I wasn’t allowed to return, it was like my heart had been ripped out of me.”

In 1999, Jill moved to Auckland, New Zealand, to support church planting and discipleship with Jeff and Robin Vines, friends from Johnson and her time in Africa. In an environment where 97% of the population had no previous connection to church, her assignment was discipleship.

“Raising support to serve in New Zealand was more difficult, because it was about poverty of the soul instead of poverty of the pantry,” she says. “Some of our work in Zimbabwe had immediate results and could be communicated with a picture, but spiritual formation takes longer and can’t be photographed.”

Jill is now in her twenty-second year as a “Kiwi,” continuing to disciple and do public theology.

“My ministry is three-pronged: church, campus, and community,” she says. “I work with Shore Community Church in Auckland and mentor church planting teams. I am a chaplain at Massey University and Laidlaw College. I volunteer with refugee young people.

Every person I meet reminds me how creative God is and how he expresses himself through our differences. Every new person I disciple reminds me just how good the good news is, and it excites me all over again.”

During his studies at Johnson, Jim Wolsieffer realized many people around the world didn’t know Jesus—a new and challenging thought for a young man who had grown up surrounded by believers. He switched his major from preaching ministry to missions, married Caranita Kesterson—who had already decided to commit her life to missions— and began a two-year internship in Italy in 1971. The Wolsieffers returned to Italy full time, leading Italy for Christ Mission, after their graduation from Johnson in 1975.

“We began by working with young people in the local camp and organizing monthly youth rallies,” Caranita says.

“But Jim broke his neck diving into a swimming pool when he was 19 years old, and traveling exacerbated his neck pain. So we began a radio ministry.”

The station, Radio Incontro, worked with Back to the Bible Broadcast and World Radio Missionary Fellowship to broadcast Bible teaching programs, Christian and classical music, and

original programming including interviews and short Scripture meditations.

“As the years passed and the number of listeners increased, we received letters and phone calls from people asking for help,” Caranita says. “These listeners were struggling spiritually and emotionally and looking for resources and a listening ear.” In response, the Wolsieffers and their staff launched a crisis hotline.

In 1988, Caranita started coursework to become a licensed counselor. In 1992 the Italian government shut down many small private radio stations, including Radio Incontro, and Caranita began working full time as a therapist.

“We moved to an old farmhouse in the country, surrounded by 3,000 olive trees, and opened a counseling ministry and family retreat center,” she says. “For 17 years, Jim coordinated programming for the center, including a leadership training program. We were able to involve many Johnson students

as interns and hosted work teams and Johnson professors as teachers in the program.”

Caranita found that counseling offered new ways to connect with individualistic Italians who were often suspicious of churches and ministry organizations.

“The Italian people have a proverb: ‘It’s fine to trust; it’s better not to trust,’” she says. “Offering counseling and training opportunities are ways to build credibility and trust. Many of them ask what makes us different or what we believe, and we point them to the Bible as our final authority. Often they have been discouraged from reading the Bible for themselves, and beginning at this point is very effective.”

Even after 50 years, the Wolsieffers continue to challenge themselves and expand their ministry in Italy. Caranita used time during the COVID pandemic to participate in online training on the concept of ambiguous loss and received permission to translate some of the material into Italian. The Italian Association for Marriage and Family Counselors asked her and her daughter, Stephany (’05), to teach two accredited workshops on ambiguous loss for supervisors and mental health professionals this fall.

Through it all, Jim and Caranita persevere in their love for Christ and their passion to share his grace. “Italy is a difficult field, but God has been faithful, and he continues to open doors for ministry,” Caranita says. “At Johnson our professors taught us that God is the almighty Jehovah-Jireh, and it is our privilege to serve him.”

Konstantin Jaroshevich

BY TOMMY SMITH President of Johnson University The next global gathering of the World Convention of Churches of Christ will be in Warsaw, Poland, from June 16-19, 2022. Along with the Polish churches, those gathered will celebrate 100 years of the Stone-Campbell Movement in Poland—a history that has seen a vibrant church remain faithful to Christ through the Nazi occupation, the destruction of World War II, and the persecution and discrimination of the Soviet era. The World Convention will also recognize the “founder” of the churches of Christ in Poland, Konstantin Jaroshevich. This alumnus of Johnson Bible College (Class of 1916) returned to Poland in 1921 to evangelize his homeland. Thus ensued a career of evangelism, church planting, and effective leadership of the Polish churches from 1921-1939. After his arrest, imprisonment, and subsequent release from prison by the Gestapo, Jaroshevich returned to the United States and continued to support the Polish church until his death in 1984.

Konstantin Jaroshevich was born in Stara-Weis, Poland, in 1891, and immigrated to the United States in 1910 to escape religious persecution in his home country.

He met a “street preacher” named Joseph Keevil in New York in 1911 and was converted to Christ.

Eager to share his testimony with others, Jaroshevich began preaching the gospel on the streets of New York.

who was visiting in New York, advised the young preacher to further his education. Robert Jones recounted their conversation: “How can I?” he asked. “I cannot speak English well and I have no money.” “There is a school at Kimberlin Heights, Tennessee, where you need no money,” came the reply.

In 1921, Konstantin and Ksenia returned to Poland and ministered among the poorest communities, faithfully preaching the gospel of Christ in spite of persecution and strong opposition from government leaders. He established the first church of Christ congregation in Poland, and the successes of his tireless evangelistic work began to spread from village to village.

With much difficulty and constant encouragement from Ashley Johnson, Jaroshevich completed his education and was ordained to the ministry by President Johnson in 1916. He returned to New York and, after his marriage to Ksenia, moved to Chicago to establish an evangelistic work within its Polish community. More than 300 people were baptized into Christ through his efforts, and his ministry extended from Chicago to Slavic communities

Joined in his efforts by John Bukovich and Jerzy Sacevich, the three pioneered the work of planting New Testament churches in Poland, eventually reaching hundreds of thousands of Christians with churches in Poland, Russia, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. Facing strong persecution, which included imprisonment in a Polish death camp, Jaroshevich became the founder of the Restoration Movement’s presence behind the Iron Curtain. The churches

When I tell people I am vice president for advancement at Johnson University, the response is almost always a blank stare followed quickly by,

“What does that mean?”

Of course, there are some who think they know and assume advancement departments are all about raising money, by which they mean something between begging and convincing people to do something they do not really want to do. Frankly, my colleagues and I need a bigger reason to get up in the morning than that.

The Advancement Office at Johnson exists to help people experience the joy of generously investing their lives and resources in extending the kingdom of God. That is Great Commissionfocused, as is the University’s mission statement. We hope people will find Johnson to be a good fit for their giving.

Furthermore, we believe that whenever Christians invest to help extend God’s kingdom, it should be a joyful experience because it is an expression of their transformation into the image of Christ. This joy is realized as we understand and embrace three key biblical truths:

As Creator, God owns everything ( “…for the world is Mine and all it contains,” Psalm 50:12).

As Provider, God is generous ( “…God…richly provides all things for us to enjoy,” 1 Timothy 1:17).

There are at least three implications that flow from that truth. First, we are dependent upon him since he owns it all. Second, anything we have control over is ours to steward, not to own.

Third, we are accountable to him for that stewardship.

It naturally follows that a generous God is one who can be trusted. Since that is true, we ought to be gratefully content with what he has provided.

Paul pointed out that he learned to be content even when he was hungry (Philippians 4). Finally, we should be a blessing to others. This, in fact, seems to be a major reason in both the Old and New Testaments for God blessing his people—so they would, in turn, bless others.

As Redeemer, God’s plan is to transform us into his likeness and include us as partners in his redemptive mission to reconcile all things to himself (“We are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory,” 2 Corinthians 3:18).

Implications of this reality include the idea that we should focus on eternal priorities, which are unseen. We should fully embrace our relationship with God as his adopted children, and we should engage the world as his partners in the ministry of reconciliation.

These three biblical truths provide a solid foundation for each Christian to grow in the understanding and practice of generosity.

They also form the theological underpinning, or the “why,” for the work we do in Advancement. Far from “begging,” we see our work of inviting followers of Christ to partner in extending God’s kingdom as high and holy work. We pray that as people respond, they will experience the joy of those whom God is transforming into the image of Christ “with everincreasing glory.” In part, our work is that of a purveyor, or a supplier, of that joy!

The three biblical principles presented here come from the “Theology of Advancement” (JohnsonU.edu/TheologyOfAdvancement) written by Richard Clark. All Advancement Office personnel see their work as grounded on the firm foundation of biblical truth rather than institutional necessity and believe their purpose, goals, strategies, tactics, methodologies, and practices must all conform to the principles revealed in a proper understanding of Scripture.

Coach Carter will be bringing Division 1 experience to the program, along with an impressive coaching resume; she played for the University of Oklahoma and was formerly an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee, in addition to spending the past 19 years as a high school coach in the Knoxville area.

“We’re so excited to have Coach Carter join our staff,” says athletic director Brandon Perry. “Her experience is going to be a great asset for our program. I believe her philosophy on coaching matches up very well with who we are, both as an athletic program and as an institution. She is bringing faith, athletics, and personal development.”

“This is such an exciting time for Johnson University athletics, and I’m blessed and honored to be chosen to lead this program,” Dayna says. “I love pouring into the girls and preparing them for not only all the life lessons that come along with being a college athlete, but also for life after softball.”

The 2021 women’s volleyball team is working with The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, a nonprofit that works to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers by pairing them with local teams, clubs, and community groups. The team has adopted a six-year-old girl named Rose, who has stage 4 cancer, as an honorary team member. This fall the team will

hold a special ceremony to induct her onto the team and present her with her own jersey, and they’ll be announcing her every time she attends a home game.

“We talked to her family and found out some of her favorite things so we can make the ceremony special, and we’ll have a red carpet for her to make her entrance!” says Eliot Hernandez, JUFL athletic director.

TENNESSEE Gene Davis, 86, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away on March 21, 2021. He was the husband of Carol (Bowers, ’70).

Ruth (Sandlin, ’57) Dorney, 86, of

Fort Wayne, Indiana, went to be with the Lord on August 6, 2021. Ruth had been a piano teacher since February of 1961. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Dorney, ’79) Farrer and husband, Bob (’76); five grandchildren, including Danielle (Farrer, ’03) Kirk; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Desiree (Dutka, ’10) Munn. She was preceded in death by her husband, John (’55), in 2001; her nephew, Devin (’84) Dutka, in 2009; and her sister, Effie (Sandlin, ’54) Dutka. Memorial gifts can be made to Johnson University for the John & Ruth Dorney Scholarship Fund.* Dan (’85) Farrer, 58, died September

27, 2021. He was the son of the late Harry (’52) and Della (’50) Farrer.

He earned undergraduate degrees in biblical theology and accounting and received an MBA. He served as an administrative pastor for GT Church in Decatur, Illinois. Surviving are

Wanda (Hamm, ’73) Golembiecki,

79, of Brazil, Indiana died May 19, 2021.

Wanda served God through her love of music as the pianist and choir director of Cloverland Church. She is survived by her husband Scott, son Jonathan, and brother Paul (’69) Hamm.

Gene (’70) Grasham, 73, of

Columbia, Kentucky, passed away on July 25, 2021. On August 1, 1969, he married Barbara (’71) Martin, and together they served Christian churches in Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia. After retiring in 2016, he preached part time in Albany, Kentucky, and Cane Valley, Kentucky. At the time of his death, he was a faithful servantmember of Columbia Christian Church.

Gene is survived by his wife, Barbara (’71); two sons Robert and Timothy (’96) and his wife, Susan (Gable, ’96); and three grandsons. Eunice (Watkins, ’47) Knowles, 99, of Lafayette, California, passed away June 19, 2021. Her father Damon (’29) Watkins attended Johnson when Ashley Johnson was president.

Her husband Richard (’44) preceded her in death. Eunice spent most of her professional life as a guidance counselor working with girls at the Contra Costa County children’s shelter. She is survived by three children, five granddaughters, and two great-granddaughters.

Kay (Downen, ’64) Meriwether, 80,

of Carmi, Illinois, died July 10, 2021.

Kay and her late husband, Harold (’63), owned and operated Harold’s Dollar Store in Carmi, Illinois, for over 30 years. She was a member of Olive Congregational Christian Church, where Harold preached, and she led the music ministry for 39 years. Kay is survived by her daughter and one grandson.

April was very involved in her church; she grew up as a member of Southport Heights Christian Church in Southport, Indiana, and more recently became an active member of Soul Harvest Church in Cloverdale, Indiana, where she ran the sound system for the worship team.

She was survived by her mother, Joy, and three siblings including Daniel (’06) Ziegler.
