At the Mercure Holland House Hotel

Your Holiday Itinerary

Monday We travel to Bristol, a city straddling the River Avon in the southwest of England with a prosperous maritime history. We visit the central Shopping Quarter –a great place for shopping, with over 500 stores and more than 50 cafes and restaurants. The streets of the Old City remain much the same today as they were hundreds of years ago and are dotted with cobbled streets, secret alleys and interesting architecture. A Suggested Places to Discover: Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, the 18th century Georgian House Museum, the Red Lodge Museum with its Elizabethan ‘Knot’ Garden dating back to 1580. Also, for ‘art’ lovers why not discover Banksy’s famous ‘Well Hung Lover’ on the side of a building opposite City Hall and College Green and the magnificent Bristol Cathedral. In the afternoon we check in to our hotel for our overnight stay.

Tuesday After breakfast, we load the coach and then the morning is yours to explore Bristol a little more. Perhaps visit the Harbourside, an attractive, modern development filled with restaurants, bars, shops and hotels. Explore Millennium Square or some of the city’s world-class attractions such as Brunel’s SS Great Britain, Bristol Aquarium, Arnolfini, Spike Island, Watershed and M Shed. We meet again early afternoon and begin our journey home.

1 Night £149

What To See: A cosmopolitan city with a small-town feel, caught between the coast and the Cotswolds, it’s no wonder Bristol is one of Britain’s favourite places for a short break. The SS Great Britain is a historic passenger ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel – the longest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1854. After being used as an ocean-going craft travelling to the US and Australia, the SS ended her working days in the Falklands before being brought home to Bristol in 1970. One of Bristol’s most famous modern-day sons is Banksy – the street artist who turned graffiti into modern art. His handiwork is all over the city, and many visitors take an official walking tour or simply seek them out for themselves – Unlike art galleries, the walls of the city are always open. The artist’s ‘Grim Reaper’, ‘The Girl with The Pierced Eardrum’ and ‘Well Hung Lover’ are all easy to spot.

Bristol has a vibrant street art scene and for a mix of contemporary and modern history, the M Shed is a museum with enough on offer to entertain the whole family. It’s a former warehouse that was converted to a museum in 2011 and has a truly eclectic collection with Industrial shelving units housing all sorts of curios –from penny farthing bikes to old printing presses and even whale bones.
