Iris Sale Is September 10 In Cleburne
The 18th Annual Business Expo sponsored by Lone Star Autoplex will be Saturday, October 1st at Cleburne Conference Center. The event is free to the public and fun for all ages!
The annual Iris Sale is September 10 from 9 to 2 pm at the JN Long Cultural Arts Complex cafeteria, 425 Granbury Street, just North of HEB grocery store in Cleburne. There is plenty of close in parking and the cafeteria is handicap accessible – no steps to climb. The Irises will be ready to plant, and the season is right for planting. Color photos of each Iris variety offered for sale will be available so flower lovers can choose their favorites and know what they will look like when they bloom. There are more than 50,000 varieties of Iris. Irises bloom in spring beginning around March. Some varieties are “rebloomers” and may rebloom one or more times throughout the year. There were Irises blooming at Thanksgiving last year and continued thru February at the JN Long Complex. People from many miles around attend this sale every year. Local Iris experts Dan and Peggy Cathey, Glenn Huddleston, and other members of the Johnson County Iris and Daylily Society will be on hand to give advice and answer questions. “The plants are grown locally by our members and therefore proven to grow in our area,” said show chair Peggy Cathey. “We offer quality plants at prices well below those found in catalogs and from internet sources,” she said. “The annual iris and plant sale is the club’s largest fundraiser. It helps pay expenses for the annual Iris and Daylily Shows in the spring, which are always free to the public.” The JN Long Complex features two Iris gardens on site: the Children’s garden on the West side of the complex, and the Gloria Huddleston Memorial Iris Garden on the North side by the entrance walkway. Planting of the Children’s garden was the first official activity at the complex just after Cleburne Friends of the Cultural Arts took over. “We are so lucky to have so much par-
ticipation here at the JN Long Cultural Arts Complex from so many diverse groups,” said CFCA president Alden Nellis. “We love to see the community enjoying the complex.” For more information, see the Iris and Day-
lily Society’s website at http://cleburnearea. com/irisdaylily/ They usually meet at 10 am on the second Saturday of each month at the Electric Coop building in Cleburne.
The annual Iris Sale September 10 in Cleburne will feature locally grown plants adapted to this area. This reblooming iris, the Pleasant Peasant, bloomed from Thanksgiving to January at the JN Long Cultural Arts Complex. There are more than 50,000 varieties of Iris.
