Oldstyle serifs are categorized by their curved strokes with leftward inclines and little to no contrast between thick and thins. Oldstyle typefaces usually feature bracketed serifs and a large cap-height to x-height ratio.

1740 1750

TRANSITIONAL

Transitional serifs are categorized by their larger x-height with vertical stress and a greater contrast between thick and thins. Transitional typefaces usually feature wider bracketed serifs with flat bases.

Modern serifs are categorized by their small x-height with vertical stress and a large contrast between thick and thins. Modern typefaces usually feature hairline serifs with flat bases.

Slab serifs are categorized by a large x-height with vertical stress and a minimal contrast between thick and thins. Slab Serif typefaces usually feature thick serifs with flat bases and squared off ends.

Sans serifs are categorized by a larger x-height with no stress and a little to no contrast between thick and thins. Sans Serif typefaces do not feature any serifs.

Grotesque Essentially ‘grotesque’ is used as a blanket term for sans serifs.

Humanist Humanist sans serif typefaces include proportions modeled after oldstyle typefaces

Geometric Geometric typefaces are modeled on geometric forms.

Transitional The characteristics of transitional sans serif closely relate to transitional serifs.

SUPERFAMILIES

Superfamilies contain fonts of multiple classifications. The goal of superfamilies is to use a base character shape prior to adding details like serifs to create a system of fonts that are complementary to each other. Examples of superfamilies include Thesis, Meta, and Roboto.

LUCAS DE GROOT

Lucas De Groot is a type designer from the Netherlands.

He was born on June 21, 1963 and is most famous for designing Thesis and Calibri – which has been the default font in the microsoft office suite for decades.

“The Antiqua” of Thesis won De Groot an award from the Type Director’s Club in 1999 and he has since opened FontFabrik, also known as LucasFonts.
