Culture in Organizations

By: Nelson Aguilar, John Sandoval and Idalia Y. De Hoyos

What is Culture? Organizational Culture:  Values  Beliefs  Behavioral Norms The organizational culture shares these values, beliefs, and behavioral norms.

Examples of Organizational Culture Because of cultural diversity within organizations, leaders must make sure they create an organizational culture that will appeal to the employees.  Balanced Culture (Linked culture values)  Strong Culture (Shared by Most)  Weak Culture (Shared by few)

Why is Culture Important at Work? Culture is important at work because we work with different people that come from different parts of the country and many times other parts of the world. Leaders need to make sure that employees communicate effectively to avoid misunderstandings.

Organizational Culture

What are the Dimensions of National and Organizational Culture? Dimensions of culture are important to understand, in part because they give us simple ways to describe how cultures and subcultures affect us at work. Geert Hofstede (picture above) identified 4 dimensions that he proposed represent differences across cultures:    

Power Distance Uncertainty avoidance Individualism/Collectivism Masculinity/Femininity

*Hofstede added a 5th dimension years later* ● Long versus short term orientation

How can we Link Organizational Culture with Business Issues? This is the: Competing Values Framework This model shows how cultures can be measured along 2 axis:  Structure  Stability vs. Flexibility  Focus  Internal vs. External

An In Depth Look At

Organizational Cultures Researchers have found that by using this framework they have identified 4 “distinct types of organizational cultures: 1. Clan Culture - This culture has an internal focus and encourages flexibility 2. Hierarchy Culture - A culture that has an internal focus and encourages stability and control. 3. Adhocracy Culture - This culture has an external focus and encourages flexibility. 4. Market Culture - A culture that has an external focus and encourages stability and control. Other research indicates a 5th culture: 5. Balanced Culture - This culture has values linked to each of the culture domains of the competing values framework. Degree of Cultures: Strong Culture - This culture central values and norms are shared and strongly upheld by most members of the organization. Weak Culture - A culture in which the values and norms are shared by a limited group of people and employees goals may not be in line with management goals.
