I was first introduced to the field of architecture when I participated in a tour of Washington D.C.’s historical structures and sight-seeing destinations. The idea of working with buildings and blueprints was fascinating to me; however, I initially considered studying civil or structural engineering. As time and my aptitude for creativity progressed, I knew that architecture would better suit my desires to design buildings. My journey with architecture so far has certainly been challenging, but I have enjoyed every step in the learning process and only grow more intrigued with this study as time progresses.

In particular, my sophomore-year studio classes exposed me to the depth of detail that comes with architecture, as well as the opportunities that follow. While working on my proposal for an Arts Center in Cayce, SC, I learned a great deal of information about the technicalities of building design and I developed my drawing, rendering, and model skills even further. After completing the requirements for that project, I was selected as a finalist for the AIA Columbia Student Design Competition. Moving forward, I plan to earn my Master’s Degree in Architecture and subsequently work for a firm in the Southeast.

Spring Semester, 2022, Professor Clarissa Mendez This proposed design for a new Arts Center in Cayce, SC, can be best described by its stacked and rotated volumes as well as its multiplanar exterior surfaces which would help to guide users throughout the various programs offered in this building. The unique form of this structure offers numerous features to those who inhabit it, some of which include a covered main entry, dynamic lobby/ forum spaces, a secondlevel oculus overlooking the driveway, and viewing terraces on the roof of each floor. After thorough iterations and research with precedents, the final design for this Arts Center addresses challenges from both the site and formatting of program while maintaining functionality and strong aesthetic.

OFFICE HIGH-RISE - NEW YORK, NY Fall Semester, 2022, Professor Kyle Kiser (Partner: Zachary Ford)

The general goal of this partner project was to research and respond to problems that typical office buildings face in the United States. We decided to focus on the relationship between common office layouts and their effects on workers’ freedom and privacy. To begin, we outlined the common layout schemes by classifying them by their distinct features and benefits. We then discovered an inverse relationship between freedom and privacy when we plotted each layout on the graph on the following page. Our method of plotting these consisted of ranking each layout from most to least free and most to least private. In addition, we plotted our given program requirements and site conditions on the graph in order to create a method of matching each program with its ideal site conditions and layout scheme. To further improve workers’ freedom through our architecture, we implemented a series of adjustable shutters that would allow workers to place them wherever necessary.

APARTMENT COMPLEX - GREENVILLE, SC Fall Semester, 2023, Professors Rick & Betsy Del Monte (Partner: Samuel Long)

The goal of this project was to design a masterplan for a hypothetical tech company that would be moving its headquarters to a four-block area of downtown Greenville, SC. After completing a masterplan based on program requirements and site surroundings, we then focused on two of these blocks to further develop architecturally. My partner and I selected the two blocks closest to Main St., but then decided to develop our own versions of the apartment’s facade design. Furthermore, my design implements a series of apartment modules with inset balconies and prominent brick columns rotated at 45 degrees to create a sharper appearance. In addition, I designed a sunscreen device on the southwest facade to limit the severity of the afternoon sun. This sunscreen is comprised of various length hollow aluminum boards mounted by cabling. The result is a pattern that flows from the apartment roof in a manner to hint at the waterfall theme present throughout the city of Greenville.

Attention to Craft Models and Hobby

While my architecture studio classes have given me the opportunity to focus on design, I have worked on many other projects that showcase my continuously growing skills with craft. These projects primarily consist of assignments from other classes as well as tasks I complete in my own time. I take pride in my attention to detail, and the following collection of photos shows a few of the projects of which I am most proud. Furthermore, projects like these have been crucial to my growth as an architect because they involve similar skills to those needed in the field of architecture, while allowing me to stay invigorated with the field by trying new methods and mediums.
