FITNESS ON THE GO Spending time abroad and can't find a gym? Here are some ways you can keep fit even when you're on the road.

A WEIGH DOWN

A BAND TOGETHER Resistance bands are easy to pack. They also make it easy for you to get the workout you need in the privacy of your hotel room. You can get bands of varying resistance depending on your fitness level and workout preference. A medium-resistance band allows you to firm up without bulking up, while a band with stronger resistance helps you build chunky muscles and a bigger bod.

Dumbbells are far too heavy to pack in your luggage, so be creative and think of easy solutions. Water bags and plastic bottles can be filled with water and used as weights. Your lightweight travel backpack can be loaded with items and strapped to your body to provide the weight resistance you need for a strength-building workout.

B WATCH YOUR STEP You don’t need a treadmill to keep track of how much exercise you’re getting everyday. A simple pedometer will do the trick. Strapped to your body, this device measures the steps and distance covered in your daily walking activities. This way, you know if you’re falling short of your normal exercise routine and can adjust your holiday activities accordingly.

A IMPROVIZE

C HAVE A BALL Deflatable gym balls allow you to perform weight-training exercises and can be used to help you develop better posture. After inflating them in your hotel room, sit on these gym balls as you’re watching television or working on your laptop to tone those abdominal and back muscles. You can also use these gym balls for a light workout.

Turn your hotel room into a makeshift gym. The backrest of a chair can be used to provide support when performing squats; rest your lower legs on a coffee table at right angles to your knees to do stomach crunches; carry out modified side-to-side push-ups by leaning your hands against the edge of a desk with your feet placed firmly on the floor.

SURFING ON THE STREETS To the casual observer, a waveboard looks like a misshapen skateboard, but fans of streetsurfing, a sport gaining popularity in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia, will tell you that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

The waveboard is part skateboard, surfboard and snowboard, but unlike a skateboard, users can ride it uphill and execute smooth frontside and backside 360° turns. And it’s not just for recreation: The waveboard apparently helps improve one’s balance and coordination, and has been used by the British surf team and Youth Olympic snowboarding coaches as a training aid. Singapore company Streetwave (www.streetwave.sg) conducts lessons at East Coast Park. Interested parties are advised to book their sessions one week in advance.

FOUR WHEELS BAD, TWO WHEELS GOOD With the current emphasis on green living, cycling is becoming more popular than ever, with several cities around the world launching bikesharing programs. Paris’ Velib program is the biggest by far, with more than 20,000 bicycles for rent. Other cities like Barcelona, Stockholm, Oslo, Montreal, New York and Denver have been following suit. Over in Asia, cities like Taipei and Seoul will soon have similar programs. In Taipei, commuters will be able to rent bicycles in the business district around the Taipei 101 skyscraper starting this month, while Seoul is hoping to implement a similar scheme next year. Will other Asian cities follow suit? While it will require some cities to improve their road infrastructure first, we certainly hope so!

RUNNING WITH MUSIC According to Professor Kate Gfeller, director of the music therapy program at the University of Iowa, you can get more out of your workout session and build up endurance by exercising to music that matches the speed of your moves. We’ve already seen Nike’s iPod-ready shoes, which include a pedometer to let you know how you’re progressing.

There's also no shortage of beatsper-minute (BPM) music playlists online that you can buy and download to your iPod. Ask people what Singapore’s national pastime is, and chances are it will be a tie between eating and shopping, with mahjong, karaoke and watching DVDs coming in as runners-up.

But what if you're not for sedentary pursuits and malls aren't your thing? We decided to take to the streets to go where couch potatoes fear to tread.

FUN FOR THE FAMILY What: Forest Adventure@Bedok Reservoir; www.forestadventure.com.sg Located in the leafy surrounds of Bedok Reservoir Park, Forest Adventure is an aerial obstacle course conceived by Frenchwoman Stephanie Besse and her husband Nick.

PLAY BALL What: Bossaball; www.bossaball.com.sg Bossaball is a sport that doesn’t fit neatly into a pigeonhole. Invented by a Belgian living in Spain, it combines beach volleyball, sepak takraw, soccer, capoeira, gymnastics and then some.

The game is played to music (usually samba or bossa nova, though anything goes, really) on a giant inflated mat with an in-built trampoline and involves two teams consisting of three to five people. It has a scoring system similar to that of volleyball, except that you score more points if you manage to spike the ball into your opponent’s trampoline. Due to the mobile nature of the game, Bossaball can be played almost anywhere, though given its bossa nova roots, it is best suited to the beach.

The world’s largest skydiving simulator is set to open on Sentosa next year. So, what can visitors expect?

Skydiving without the risk—that’s how you can describe iFly Singapore, which is set to be ground zero for thrill seekers in Singapore next year. Measuring 17 meters high, the transparent wind tunnel will offer participants unparalleled views of the South China Sea and Sentosa’s Siloso Beach.

The experience is expected to cost $40 a person and will last approximately half an hour.

The fee includes gear rental and professional coaching. Considering that a conventional skydiving session can cost more than $400, you could say that the iFly is comparatively inexpensive.

Before you dismiss it as a soft option, you should know that wind tunnels are actually used by individuals and organizations such as the United States Army as a skydiving training tool. Though Ski 360° opened slightly over three years ago, its popularity shows no sign of fading. Come by on a weekend and you’ll find no shortage of people taking to the cableway with varying degrees of success. Besides cable-skiing and wakeboarding, you can also slalom, trickski and kneeboard. There’s a restaurant and bar at Ski 360°, so even if you don’t cable-ski, you can still spend an entertaining afternoon there watching the experts strut their stuff.

Bring on the Heat!

Bikram Choudhury is the man behind the most recent move to include yoga as a competitive sport in the Olympic Games. Find out more about this flamboyant personality who is also the creator of hot yoga.

Feats of speed, strength, agility and endurance will not be the only athletic achievements to be celebrated at the next Olympic Games. The London 2012 Games will see the inclusion of yoga as a competitive sport for the first time, where the ability to contort the body into unlikely shapes will win the most flexible yogi a gold medal and the coveted top position on the winner’s rostrum.

Behind this controversial move is Bikram Choudhury, the creator of hot yoga who is no stranger to controversy himself.

The flamboyant personality is famous—or notorious, depending on how you look at it—for his luxurious lifestyle and for being the only yogi to copyright his brand of yoga.

LARGER THAN LIFE In fact, Choudhury, by many accounts, behaves more like a Hollywood A-lister than the cross-legged, meditating guru some might imagine him to be.

“I don’t think there is anyone who loves me as much as I love myself,” he was once quoted as saying.

To add sparkle to glitter, his company boasts more than 800 affiliated studios worldwide, he lives in a Beverly Hills mansion, owns a fleet of Rolls-Royces—35, it was last reported—and has a penchant for expensive luxury watches along the likes of Rolexes and Piagets. His celebrity clientèle comprise the biggest names in entertainment including Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts.

But don’t let his star power fool you. Choudhury

is no less than the real thing, claiming to be capable of extraordinary feats you would assume could only belong to the fantasy world of superheroes. He says, “Just recently I was on Mount Fuji in Japan and I laid down in the snow for half an hour in just my swimming trunks—a crowd gathered in amazement—and I can lie down on a bed of nails or have a car drive over my chest.”

That’s not all, it seems. He adds, “In the Himalayas is a yogi called Hurricane Baba who has been sitting in a tree for 72 years and another who has been standing for over 80 years; this is all [done] without food, sleep or using the toilet.”

According to Choudhury, these are feats achievable with yoga, and the skepticism that greets these claims seems to frustrate him. He says, “All I’ve done all my life is to educate people, but often they don’t understand, especially people in the West. When people tell me they want to know India, I say they’ll have to wait 5,000 years, because they’ll never really understand it.

“When I first came to America to try and teach Westerners yoga, I had a hard time. I had to fight everyone, especially the media, and the authorities nearly put me in jail for offending the World Orthopedic Association by saying that the most important thing in the body is the spine and that the best way to heal the spine is to do backward bends. Westerners want instant gratification, and won’t understand the Indian world, but I believed that as long as I keep trying, people will learn. Now after 40 years here people listen to me, they know me and respect me.”

HOT YOGA IS COOL >>>> COMPETITIVE YOGA He opened himself to more debate when, six years ago, he started a yoga asana competition in the United States, which has since spread across the globe. The growing popularity of competitions such as these encouraged Choudhury to take it up on a larger scale, and the London 2012 Games will soon see his plans come to fruition.

But along with his supporters, Choudhury also has his fair share of detractors, some of whom are not so sure if yoga can and should be considered a competitive sport. In London, where yoga will debut as a competitive sport in the Olympic Games, the critics have been vocal. Elizabeth Stanley, the Director of the Life Centre in West London says, “Competition is anathema to yoga. It jeopardizes its true nature, which is about an acceptance of who you are and where your body is at.”

Yet Choudhury is unfazed by the criticism.

He says, “Yoga means union—of body, mind and soul—and in that respect, anything and everything can be yoga. Jogging is yoga, thinking is yoga, talking is yoga. Also, there are five paths of yoga, of which physical yoga or hatha yoga is only one. The other paths include, to put it simply, karma yoga

Bikram yoga is known around the world more famously as “hot yoga” or “sweaty yoga.” It involves a series of 26 postures performed in a mirrored room that has been heated to sweltering temperatures of up to 40°C (104°F). It is believed that a yoga session like this promotes profuse sweating, which rids the body of toxins. It also helps to warm the body, making it more flexible and thus enabling the yoga practitioner to assume the various positions more easily.

(work), raja yoga (meditation), jnana yoga (the ability to transcend or detach) and bhakti yoga (devotion).

“In hatha yoga there are in turn different fields, of which asana—or postures, which most people outside India associate with yoga—is but one. The practice of asana involves physical fitness, mental strength and concentration; and it is these qualities that the competition focuses on.”

Where Choudhury is concerned, there is no doubt whatsoever over whether yoga can be considered a sport. He reveals, “In fact, it was the IOC (International Olympic Council) that approached me to inaugurate yoga as an Olympic sport. This was back in 1984 when the Games were held in Los Angeles (LA), where I live and have my headquarters. I was a key fund raiser for those games, and the then Mayor of LA, the late Tom Bradley, supported yoga being an

Olympic sport. I wanted to do it, but to qualify I needed at least eight countries to participate, and I wasn’t big enough then to pull that off.”

In fact, Choudhury is also quick to point out that yoga competitions have been held in India for thousands of years. As a teenage boy, Choudhury himself was crowned the National India Yoga Champion three years consecutively at the ages of 13, 14 and 15. His wife, Rajashree, was a five-time champion. In the London 2012 Olympics, competitors must perform five compulsory postures followed by two freestyle postures before a panel of judges. Contestants are awarded marks out of 10 for technique, which includes movement, performance and gracefulness.

The inclusion of yoga in the Olympic Games may still be a talking point in the early years to come, but with Choudhury, all the talk might as well be non-existent. He simply dismisses his detractors, confident that his vision will finally see things through.

All along, this is how he has dodged media criticism of his lifestyle and the patenting of his yoga sequence of postures.

“I’m not surprised or angry with them; they just act and behave according to their limited knowledge and understanding,” he says. “It’s like the frog in the well—it can only see so much but that’s not its fault. My critics are just hungry and thirsty to know more, and it’s my job to educate them. They need yoga more than anyone.”

The goal of bull-riding is to try and stay on the animal for eight seconds. And if you’ve ever seen a bucking bull up close, you’ll know that this is much harder than it sounds.

But fans say that the thrills far outweigh the danger, and you’ll come across quite a number of riders who view the injuries sustained as a matter of pride.

Feel the rush in: Missouri, United States.

At the Sankey Rodeo School, which is headquartered in Missouri and has schools across the US, you will get to experience first hand what it’s like to be a bronco rider. You don’t need to have any experience riding animals and the school welcomes people of all ages. In fact, it has had participants as young as seven and as old as 70. As stated on its website: “Your physical condition and attitude will matter far more than your age.”

And for a sport that is practically dripping with testosterone, the school has its fair share of women participants too.

Difficulty level: Well, let’s face it—you will be riding a live, rampaging bull, so it’s safe to assume that an ice pack is going to be your best friend for the next few days at the very least. Having said that, if a 70-year old can do it…

SPEEDING LIKE A HUMAN BULLET: LUGING The lowdown: Billed as the fastest sport on ice, luging comes from the French word for sled and has been around since the 15th century, though it was only introduced as an Olympic sport in 1964. To luge, you propel yourself down an icy slide while lying supine on a sled.

Depending on where you luge, speeds can reach up to about 140 km/h.

Difficulty level: Hard. The challenge is to stay on the sled and maintain an aerodynamic form so that you don’t create friction and lose your momentum; the slightest movement on your part (and this includes lifting your head) can slow you down.

Feel the rush in: Lake Placid, New York. This two-time Winter Olympic host city offers sports nuts plenty of opportunities to go crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, bobsledding and ice-skating. At the Verizon Sports Complex, you can have a go in the Luge Rocket ride, a semi-enclosed modified sled that will have you hurtling down 17 twists and turns at 80km/h.

If that’s not enough, you can also take part

in the Lake Placid Fantasy Camp, a two-day program conducted by Olympic medalists and former world champions Gordy Sheer and Duncan Kennedy. Not only will you stay at the United States Olympic Training Center, but you’ll also learn to luge like an Olympian on the world’s most technically-advanced ramps and rub shoulders with members of the national luge team. CLIMBING TO THE TOP: KARST CLIMBING The lowdown: Karst climbing is just like rock climbing, except karst is a type of limestone, as opposed to granite, formation. Other than this geological difference, karst climbing is just as challenging and requires a good level of fitness and stamina.

Feel the rush in: Yangshuo, China. Located 65 kilometers from Guilin, this little town is surrounded by some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world. The mist-shrouded mountains and placid waters of the Li River have been immortalized in many a brush painting and souvenir scroll, and with so many mountains in the area, it’s small wonder that this picturesque town is considered China’s best rock-climbing locale. In fact, a sure sign that Yangshuo is making its mark on the international rock-climbing scene is the fact that the town hosted its first international climbing festival at White Mountain last year. Apart from rock-climbing, you can also hike, cycle, swim or explore the many caves.

Difficulty level: Moderate to high. There are over 300 climbing routes in Yangshuo, with more being added almost every other day, ranging from "I-can-handle-this" to "I-thinkI’m-going-to-pee-in-my-pants" levels. The most famous karst in Yangshuo is Moon Hill, which has more than 20 routes.

FLYING THROUGH THE AIR:ZIPLINING The lowdown: Talk about seeing your life flash before your eyes. Currently one of the hottest adventure sports activities in the world, ziplining is, like bungee jumping, pretty low-maintenance.

There’s no gear involved—all you have to do is strap yourself to the harness, which is connected to a cable suspended on an incline, take a leap (of faith, if you’re afraid of heights) and enjoy the cool rush of air as you go zipping past the scenery below.

Feel the rush in: Sun City, South Africa, home to the world’s fastest and longest zipline. Located in Sun City, the ProNutro Zip 2000 (www.zip2000. co.za) is 2,000 meters long and 280 meters high.

Closer to Singapore, there’s The Xcelerator in Outland Adventure (www.outlandadventure.org), Philippines’ largest rope course facility. Located in a private nature sanctuary in Davao City, the 1-kilometer long, 200-meter high ride, with speeds that reach up to 100km/h, is billed as the longest, fastest and highest zipline in Asia.

Superlatives aside, another ziplining ride to check out is the Boquete Tree Trek Canopy Tour (www.hablayapanama.com) in Panama, which gives adventurers a different perspective of the country’s cloud forests from 13 different platforms.

Difficulty level: Easy. The only difficulty lies in taking that first leap off the platform, but once you finish screaming, things become a lot easier.

TAKING THE PLUNGE: BASE-JUMPING The lowdown: An acronym for Buildings, Antennas, Spans (bridges) and Earth (cliffs), BASE-jumping involves parachuting from the aforementioned places and trying to land safely on the ground. While this may sound simple enough, the reality is quite different.

BASE-jumping is dangerous, even more so than skydiving, because its lower altitude leaves no margin for error. In addition, unlike skydiving, there is the very real possibility of hitting into something on your way down. Yet, even though BASE-jumping has been banned in several countries, the sport continues to attract thrill seekers looking for the ultimate adrenaline high.

Feel the rush in: Voss, Norway. One of the few places in the world where the sport is still legal, this Norwegian town is considered

the BASE-jumping capital of Europe, not least because of its natural beauty, mountains and fjords. Extreme-sports enthusiasts will also find plenty else to do in the heart of fjord country, including skiing, paragliding and kayaking.

The best time to go is the last week of June, when Voss plays host to the Ekstremsport Veko (www.ekstremsportveko.com), a weeklong event that sees hundreds of athletes from around the world descending on the town to take part in all kinds of extreme-sports competitions.

Difficulty level: Very high. BASE-jumping is not for amateurs. In fact, experts say that you need to complete at least 200 skydives before you should even contemplate BASE-jumping and even then, that is no protection against accidents or a faulty parachute.

Go caving in Fairy Cave in Bau, Sarawak. Its entrance is 30 meters above ground. Inside, view the grotto which has been used by the Chinese as a shrine.

Check out the Gomantang Caves, Sabah, where birds’ (swallows) nests are cultivated for consumption.

Take a cruise along Kinabatangan River, Sabah. At 560 kilometers, it is Malaysia’s second-longest river.

MOUNT KINABALU AND SURROUNDINGS

Mount Kinabalu is famous the world over for being the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. A vast granite massif rising up to 4,101 meters, the mountain is a destination for climbers and trekkers, and is just two hours’ drive from Sabah’s capital of Kota Kinabalu.

After you’ve made your way up the mountain, make sure you visit the other amazing sights and spots around the peak.

Don’t miss Kinabalu Park, which covers an area of 754 square kilometers of various vegetation types, from montane oak to alpine meadow plants. The flora collection here is among the richest in the world.

The park is an ideal spot in which to enjoy the cool, fresh air, and is where one can take a hike through forest trails. If you want to make sure you cover everything here, sign up for the free visitor programs organized by the park, which offer regular evening film screenings and guided morning trail walks by park naturalists.

You could also check out Poring Hot Springs, where you can stroll on a canopy walkway and get a whole different view of wildlife in a tropical rainforest—you never know what you might spot. Soak in the hotspring water in indoor or outdoor tubs.

TABIN WILDLIFE RESERVE, SABAH The latest wildlife and nature destination in Sabah, Tabin Wildlife Reserve is a large rainforest located in eastern Sabah. It covers 120,500 hectares and is home to an extensive array of fauna, many of which are highly endangered. This is why the wildlife reserve has become increasingly popular with tourists, who travel from all over Malaysia and the rest of the world to get up close to nature here.

But perhaps the biggest highlight for many is the unique accommodation options on offer. The Tabin Chalets are located on the forested hills, while Tabin Lodges can be found along the banks of the Lipad River.

More adventurous souls can get cozy with nature in Tabin Eco-Tents, which are built on raised wooden platforms and come with common shower and toilet facilities. While you’re here, make sure you set aside time for rainforest expeditions and bird-watching.

Just 37 kilometers from Kuching, Bako is one of the best places in Sarawak (and the region) to get acquainted with wildlife.

The oldest national park in Sarawak, this coastal park has numerous beaches surrounded by beautiful cliffs. Make sure you explore the extensive, well-marked network of trails. A great holiday spot for avid and casual nature lovers, Bako is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, some of which are still waiting to be discovered.

You can either spend an entire day here exploring the rainforest, or spend a night surrounded by the sounds of nature. Jaded urbanites can wake up to the melodious chirping of birds and insects which should be a rejuvenating treat.

KUBAH NATIONAL PARK, SARAWAK Covering over 2,230 hectares, Kubah National Park has one of Borneo’s most extensive selections of palms and orchids. If you like hiking, this is the place to go, as the park offers four trails, one of them leading to Gunung Serapi Mountain. The trek can be quite a challenging one—it takes as long as six hours for a return trip.

If you’re looking for something more relaxing, check out the cascading waters that can be reached via the Waterfall Trail.

However, be prepared—it takes two hours to get to the falls. Keep an eye out for plants and creatures such as eria and appendicula orchids, bearded pigs, black hornbills and

a whole host of others. If you want to catch a glimpse of more elusive animals, head to Matang Wildlife Centre, which is part of the park. Here, you can see sambar deers, sun bears and bear cats in large enclosures.

WHEN TO GO This being the tropics, days here are very warm and often humid, while nights are fairly cool. Take note that heavy rains are usually from November to February in East Malaysia.

GETTING AROUND To get to East Malaysia, flying is your best option. However, take note that flights in East Malaysia are frequently fully booked during school holidays and are prone to delays due to inconsistent weather. Once in East Malaysia, there is a wide range of transport options, including trains, buses and taxis, in the major cities.

Just ask your hotel concierge for the directions and best methods to get to your destinations. If you are planning to venture out, know Jungle-trek that distances are long in East Malaysia and roads are relatively poor in terms of network. So make sure you plan your trip properly to ensure you get to your desired destination. CHANGI AIRPORT WELCOMES SRIWIJAYA AIR Sriwijaya Air was given a warm reception by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on January 16, 2009. All Hands on Art The Asian Civilisations Museum, The Peranakan Museum and CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore) recently unveiled the Asian Symbols Interactive Art station at Terminal 2, a collaborative project that began in mid-2008.

UP CLOSE WITH WAKIN CHAU Passengers had a rare opportunity to come up close and personal with Mando- and Cantopop star, Wakin Chau (formerly known as Emil Chau) on February 5.

The singer-songwriter was in town for his concert that took place on February 7. Changi’s Meet and Greet session drew a crowd of close to 80 excited passengers and staff, as well

as onlookers from the landside viewing mall.

It’s hard to believe that Ivana Daniell is in

her 50s. Indeed, the glamorous movement H therapist looks like she might actually be a good 20 years younger. Often credited for introducing Pilates to Singapore, Daniell, who has more than 20 years experience in Pilates instruction, has a unique approach to health and fitness and believes in customizing fitness routines for each individual, depending on body type and movement personality.

Recently, Daniel was appointed as a consultant for Aman Pilates, the new Pilates program launched by luxury resort hotel chain, Amanresorts. It is currently available at two of their properties: Amanpuri in Phuket, Thailand and Aman at Summer Palace in Beijing, China. Soon these programs will be made available in its other resorts all across Asia.

We caught up with Daniell and asked her to tell us more about: Body and movement People sit all day at the computer.

We've lost the connection with our sense of movement. There’s such a lack of movement awareness, which is the reason more people are complaining of chronic aches and pains. My mission is to educate people and make them more aware of their bodies. You'll be surprised at the results you can see with movement therapy—better body shape, improved posture and freedom from pain.

Pilates programs for travelers We wanted to ensure people could enjoy the benefits of health and fitness even while they travel.

body. People who live in the big cities of London or New York take their health and fitness very seriously. They want to continue their routines even when they are on holiday.

Keeping fit while traveling I travel quite a bit. I'm away at least a week every month, and I fly off for longer periods every three months. Most of the time it’s for work, but because I love what I do so much, I tend to confuse work and pleasure sometimes. I’ll always be on the hunt for a good Pilates studio overseas. It’s so mainstream now that it's relatively easy to find one no matter where you are.

Travel secrets and tips I don’t like to travel like a tourist. I like to get involved with the locals as much as possible. I'm lucky because through my work, I’ve met so many people around the world that it’s always easy to find someone who’ll welcome me and is willing to show me around.

Her favorite travel destinations Argentina is my favorite place in the world! I go to Buenos Aires every year just to dance the tango. This year, I’ll be going to Brazil and meeting up with one of my childhood friends. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the culture and soaking in the sights of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

How airports can enhance the travel experience Just do what Changi Airport in Singapore does!

It’s user-friendly, super-organized and helps cut down travelers’ stress. You get out of a plane and in 15 minutes, you’re in a taxi that will bring you right to town! If airports all around the world could be like Changi, travel would be an absolute pleasure.
