What is luxon? Luxon is a digital tool designed to help alleviate symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D). Luxon utilizes wearable sensors and high lux light bulbs to improve light therapy treatment.

Seasonal Affective Disorder Depression Sunlight

What is S.A.D? S.A.D. stands for season affective disorder. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year, most commonly in the winter. This is due to the lack of sunlight exposure in the colder months. People may sleep too much or have little energy.

9

Cause

The specific cause of SAD remains unknown. Research has shown that it is linked to Serotonin and Melatonin levels.

Serotonin is a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) that affects mood. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin that may trigger depression. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep and wakefulness. The change in season can disrupt the balance of the body’s level of melatonin, which plays a role in sleep patterns and mood.

Effect Solution

Symptoms may start out mild and become more severe as the season progress. Those who live in places where days are considerably shorter in winter are more susceptible.

People may alleviate SAD symptoms by boosting their exposure to sunlight. Treatments include light therapy, psychotherapy, and medication. 11

circadian rhythm through complex pathways.

3. Sunlight exposure

increases serotonin levels in the body.

4. Proper levels of serotonin result in more energy, improved mood, and better sleep at night.

Light Therapy

Light therapy, also called phototherapy, is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and certain other conditions by exposure to artificial light. During light therapy, you sit or work near a device called a light therapy box.

13

What is lux?

Light Therapy

Areas of Opportunity

Lux is a measure of the intensity of light as seen by the human eye. One “lux” is one lumen per square meter. And to put that in perspective, a typical office hallway would measure 80 lux, while direct sunlight on a bright day can measure 100,000 lux.

Consciousness

Approximately 60% of people who have used light therapy are not consistent with their regime and relapse because of this.

During light therapy you are confined to a small radius of space and limits the activities you’re able to perform.

The light therapy boxes are usually large and take up a good amount of valuable desk space.

The user has to plan ahead and consciously schedule in time for light therapy treatment.

Carrie feels sad suddenly.

She is not sure if she has depression.

Carrie goes online and to find for help.

Lancy has been diagnosed with SAD. She wakes up in the morning with low energy.

She sits in front of her mirror and look at herself.

She talks to herself into the mirror.

Carrie finds an app for a self-diagnosis depression test.

Carrie is answering all the questions.

The app shows the result she is fine! :)

Lancy turns on her lighted makeup mirror. She checks the app that is connected to the mirror to turn on.

The light on the mirror provides Lancy 30 minutes light therapy.

Lancy feels energized and ready for the rest of the day!

Tim has a bad habit of using his phone Tim’s sleeping schedule is chaos every night before sleep. because of this habit.

This bad habit of his has begun to impact his mood.

Tim is always sad about his social life.

He is always isolated when he is out.

Tim is relieved when he can go home and use his VR to system to socialize.

Tim downloads an app that allows him to adjust his circadian rhythm.

The app requires Tim to shut down his digital devices at a certain time to allow him internal clock to be in check.

The VR systems allows Tim to enter another realm with others like him.

Tim socializes with others facing the same depression symptoms.

Knowing there are others facing the same problems as Tim and facing them together allows Tim to rest.

Body Clock [ treatment ]

After using the app, Tim has seen improvement in his rountine.

VR Support Network [ treatment ]

23

User turns on the lights by using mobile device.

User has been diagnosed with depression. She wakes up in the morning and has low energy.

User has a bad experience which decreases his mood. The ceiling provides therapy light.

The sensor detects a change in heart rate and breathing. User wears the sensor

I feel energy!!

User can control the light on her phone. The light also can adjust the brightness automatically.

Smart Light Therapy Bulb [ treatment ]

The sensor reads the biometric change as the mood ‘anger.’

The sensor guides the user into a breathing exercise to calm the user.

The data the sensor collects is sent to a therapist and together you come up with healthy coping methods.

Biometric Mood Sensor [ treatment ]

25

Auto Light Therapy Chosen Direction

As a team we decided to go with the automated light therapy concept. We chose this direction because light therapy directly combats the source of seasonal affective disorder and there are plenty of opportunities to improve the treatment.

Integration

During light therapy you are confined to a small radius of space and limits the activities you’re able to perform.

By utilizing light therapy bulbs instead of a light therapy box, the user has more flexibility in movement.

The light therapy boxes are usually large and take up a good amount of valuable desk space.

Instead of a light therapy box that sits on your desk, luxon will pair with bulbs that install into your existing light fixtures.

The user has to plan ahead and consciously schedule in time for light therapy treatment.

Luxon will automatically turn on light therapy bulbs when the user has not met daily light exposure needs. Without disrupting the user’s schedule.
