*Arthur Preston was born on Walney Island Barrow in Furness in 1937 into a fish & chip shop owning family which came originally from Milnsbridge. In 1945 Arthur’s father moved back to Huddersfield and Arthur went to Sunday School at Paddock Wesleyan Church., which after several amalgamations became part of Highfield St James (now Waverley Church). He started preaching for the URC in the early ‘90s .

Arthur’s father was a Salvationist and mother a Baptist but he was brought up as a Methodist so he’s truly ecumenical.

From September we will have a new minister, Helen Roberts.

It is said that ministers are not supposed to have friends…but we are allowed (I think) to have people of whom we are ‘particularly fond’.

Well, I would like to say that I am ‘particularly fond’ of everyone at Trinity. I’m sure you’ll agree that the last few years have been an interesting ride. We have managed the great ups and downs that all churches are supposed to do; we have seen a wedding; baptised children and unfortunately said goodbye to some good friends who have been ‘promoted to Glory’ as they say.

On Tuesday 1st September we will hold an informal welcome for Helen with tea and cakes in The Arthurs’ Room between 2 and 4pm, and visitors are welcome from all her ‘new’ churches; Shepley, Gatehead and Brockholes.

Helen’s official Welcome Service will be a Circuit Service at Honley Trinity on Sunday 6th September at 3.0pm.

All are invited to attend. This will also be the occasion when Rev Tim will receive his commission as a Pioneer Minister in the Circuit.

As I reflect on my time with you all I have thought about these ‘rites of passage’ and considered how they have been staging posts for us in our lives. But I think the greatest staging posts have been the small and often unseen (by anyone else) triumphs that some of us have had. It’s the little things that no none else sees in a church but which are experienced by individuals that go to make a church what it eventually becomes.

And on Sunday September 27th Helen will lead our Harvest and Invitation Sunday service at 1030. Don’t forget to invite someone to share this service with us! Our gifts will be donated to the Welcome Centre at Huddersfield Mission. Please ensure gifts of food (tins & packets) are in date. Toiletries are also appreciated.

I have had the privilege of being with some of you in your great joys as well as the troughs that have sometimes come your way. It is the fact that you have come through all sorts of challenges that ultimately testify to the healing and recuperative nature of church – and that power lives on and forms a carpet for the future events of church life. It’s a carpet that is rolled out every Sunday and which welcomes friend and stranger alike to come and taste God and to experience the spiritual life that lives in and amongst everyone.

I am sad to say goodbye but I know you will continue to serve God and one another, and thereby offer the Kingdom of God to those who seek it.

Ken Draper, Trinity’s organist, retires on August 23rd after 60 years as a Church Organist In September 1954 Ken Draper was appointed organist at the Congregational Church, Edward Street, Dunstable. He played there for 33 years until the building was demolished. When the church school-room next door was redesigned to include a chapel, Ken oversaw the purchase of an electric organ which he played each Sunday. On the 25th anniversary of his appointment the minister estimated that Ken had played at least 13,000 hymns and numerous voluntaries.

Ken and his wife Joyce moved to Honley in 1987 and he soon joined the other organists at Trinity Church, in time becoming the only organist.

Ken was instrumental in changing the old pipe organ for an electronic organ (pictured) which he played for the next 20 years, before suggesting we purchase our current instrument, which is suitable for both organists and pianists. He has taught us many new hymns as well as playing the more traditional favourites. He also composed a special Anthem for Trinity Church’s 25th Anniversary. We would like to thank Ken for his wonderful musicianship and long years of service.

Methodist Leisure Group AWAY DAY The Circuit Leisure Group AwayDay is to Ilkley and Addingham, on Tuesday 11th August 2015 and all are welcome. Depart Huddersfield 10.21 TransPennine to Leeds then 11.02 Wharfedale Line to Ilkley, arriving 11.29.

This year we begin walking on arrival at Ilkley and have time for a lunch break in Addingham before returning to Ilkley. The route is on the Dales Way alongside the Wharfe and return to Ilkley on the other bank of the Wharfe by quiet lanes and through mature woodland. There are good paths throughout the walk with very little climbing. Each half of the walk is approximately 3 miles. We hope to reach Addingham just after 1pm and leave after our lunch just before 2pm to be back in Ilkley by 3.30pm in time for the 15.36 train to Leeds.

Tickets: a half-price concessionary Off-Peak return Huddersfield to Ilkley is £3.35. OffPeak tickets are not valid between 4pm and 6.30pm so you may need a half-price AnyTime single Leeds to Huddersfield at £2.80 on the way back.

Alternatives are Train Day Rovers or Family Day Rovers. If you can get your tickets in advance it will avoid long queues in Huddersfield station 3
