John Lyon’s Scholars are seen as leaders within the School. These pupils - from Year 7 to Upper Sixth - strive to set new goals not just for themselves, but for all other pupils around them.
Our Scholarship Programme covers all areas of School life, from the classroom to the sports fields to the stage.
It sets ambitious goals through personalised target setting and monitors each pupil’s achievements and successes over the course of each term and School year.
In my time at John Lyon I have seen how a Scholarship can help an able young pupil with potential hone their talents and grow in confidence, thanks to the structure put around them and the support of their teacher mentors.
The gold and blue Scholarship tie - given to all award holders - is worn with great pride.
This booklet sets out the Scholarships on offer at John Lyon and what each department looks for in awarding Scholarships, how it will support each pupil, and how it wishes to see each Scholar strive to meet the expectations placed on them.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Scholarships reward both previous attainment and future potential, as well as dedication and commitment to excellence.
As well as being an honour, Scholarships also come with a monetary benefit. This is normally a remission of 5% of the School tuition fees, but for exceptional candidates the School may consider a greater percentage.
Unlike Bursaries, Scholarships are not means-tested or based on a family’s ability to pay tuition fees. They are instead designed to show the School has recognised a particular talent and wants to help that pupil fulfil their potential.
Eligibility and Application
The following pages detail the requirements for each Scholarship type: Drama, Music, Sport, Art and STEAM Scholarships.These scholarships are based on the completion of an application form to begin with and involve the candidate attending an assessment or interview day. Academic Scholarships are awarded by the School based on performance in entrance examinations.
Ages
Scholarships are available to pupils in every year of the School. Most are typically awarded to pupils entering the School in Year 7, Year 9 and Sixth Form. However, Scholarships can be awarded to pupils already studying here and in any year.
ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Academic Scholars are all-rounders in the classroom, who enjoy the learning process and strive to be the best they can be in every subject they take. Academic Scholars are inherently inquisitive and enjoy extending their horizons beyond the curriculum.
Our Academic Scholarship Programme is designed to support and challenge each Scholar both inside and outside the classroom, to improve their academic results.The Programme will also support pupils in developing their passions and curiosity to pursue extra-curricular learning.This in turn will inspire all other pupils to reach for the highest standards.
The programme aims to touch on all eight of our School Values, but with a particular focus on Excellence, Ambition and Enquiry.
Eligibility
Academic Scholarships are awarded by the School based on achievement in the entrance examination process and are typically awarded to pupils who achieve high marks in more than one subject.
There is no application form to fill in for Academic Scholarships.
Rewards and Expectations
Each Academic Scholar will be invited to a special induction day with their parents. An Academic Scholars’ assembly will be held each term.
Every Academic Scholar will receive a set of individually tailored personal targets on a termly basis, based on their strengths and areas which can be improved upon. Each Scholar will benefit from regular meetings with teacher mentors, play an active and visible part in the Excellence Programme, attend a variety of extra-curricular clubs and societies in school, and be given assistance in seeking out independent reading, talks and lectures.
Scholars are expected to attend most Excellence Programme talks, enter an Excellence Programme competition every term, play an active role in the Academic Society, take part in an extra-curricular club that involves a project and regularly update their Scholarship Journal to record their progress.
Teachers and Mentors
Our Academic Scholarship Programme will be overseen by the Head of Scholars, who will set the overall structure of the programme and keep the central record of Scholars’ progress. The Head of Scholars will also manage a team of teacher mentors, who will work with each Scholar offering 1:1 guidance and support.
The role of the mentors will be to review progress, monitor entries into Scholarship Journals, assess levels of commitment, set future targets and provide written feedback, termly to the Head of Scholars and annually to parents.
SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS
Sport Scholars train hard and lead John Lyon’s teams on a competitive stage in fixtures against other schools in a variety of sports.
Our Sport Scholarship Programme helps produce exceptional young sportspeople, who are dedicated to their particular discipline and committed to the School’s healthy lifestyle philosophy. The programme aims to touch on all eight of our School Values, but with a particular focus on Excellence, Ambition and Resolve.
Eligibility
Sport Scholarships are awarded to those who have experience of playing at a very high level (eg: academy, county or development squad) and/or are able to make a significant contribution to a range of sports, and/or demonstrate the potential to develop into an outstanding athlete in their time at the School. To apply, a Sport Scholarship application form should be completed by parents. This application also has a section for the candidate to complete in their own words. Sport Scholarships are also subject to an assessment day, details of which will be provided to those candidates invited to attend.
Rewards and Expectations
Upon selection, Sport Scholars will be invited to a special induction day. During this visit, they will tour the Sports department and observe the range of facilities available to them, including the25-metre swimming pool, well-equipped sports hall, fitness studio, indoor and outdoor cricket nets andhard court on site, as well as two pavilions and our very own 65-acre sports pitches at Sudbury Fields.
Every Sport Scholar will receive a set of individually tailored personal targets on a termly basis, based on their strengths and areas that could be improved upon.
Each Scholar will benefit from regular meetings with the Director of Sport, will be part of teams and will be expected to take part in seminars, lectures and conditioning sessions. They will alsoreceive a full gym induction, strength and conditioning sessions, specialist training and fitness testing.
Scholars are expected to perform consistently at the highest level in curriculum PE and Games, recognise the School will have priority on their extra-curricular time, make an impact when representing the School and assist in developing Sport at the School.
Teachers and Mentors
Our Sport Scholarship Programme will be overseen by the Director of Sport, who sets the overall structure of the programme and keeps the central record of Scholars’ progress.
The Director of Sport will offer each Scholar 1:1 guidance and support and will review progress, monitor entries into Scholarship Journals, assess levels of commitment, set future targets and provide written feedback, termly to the Head of Scholars and annually to parents.
MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Music Scholars are seen as well as heard, taking the lead in solo and ensemble concerts throughout the year whilstregularly sitting practical music exams on their chosen instruments.
Our Music Scholarship Programme aims to create excellent performers with first-rate musicianship and theory. Scholars are often front and centre on stage and inspire all those around them to reach greater heights. The programme aims to touch on all eight of our School Values, but with a particular focus on Excellence, Creativity and Innovation.
Eligibility
Music Scholarships are awarded to those who have a passion for music. Potential Scholars should be able to play an orchestral instrument to at least Grade 4/5 standard at Year 7 and play a second
instrument or sing. At Year 9, the instrumental standard is Grade 5/6 and to be working towards, or have passed, Grade 5 Theory of Music. A Music Scholarship application form should be completed by parents.This application also has a section for the candidate to complete in their own words. Music Scholarships are also subject to an assessment day, details of which will be provided to those candidates invited to attend.
Rewards and Expectations
Upon selection, Music Scholars will be invited to a special induction day. Music Scholars will be given a tour of the Music department and observe the range of facilities available to them, including a recital hall with two Steinway grand pianos, an ICT suite with 15 Apple Macs, seven teaching/ practice rooms with Yamaha and Boston pianos and well-resourced facilities for Music Technology, including a recording studio. A Music Scholars’ assembly will be held each term. Every Music Scholar will receive a set of individually tailored personal targets on a termly basis, based on their strengths and areas that could be improved upon.
Each Scholar will benefit from regular meetings with the Director of Music, will be part of musical ensembles and will be expected to take part in additional musical events such as enrichment trips and tours. They will also receive guidance and support from a Sixth Form mentor, who will help them with any ongoing projects.
Scholars are required to attend at least three musical rehearsals each week and regularly update their Scholarship Journal to record their musical journey.

Our Music Scholarship Programme is overseen by the Director of Music, who sets the overall structure of the programme and keeps the central record of Scholars’ progress.
The Director of Music will offer each Scholar 1:1 guidance and support and will review progress, monitor entries into Scholarship Journals, assess levels of commitment, set future targets and provide written feedback, termly to the Head of Scholars and annually to parents.
DRAMA SCHOLARSHIPS
Drama Scholars are comfortable both delivering monologues and being part of a large cast and take a great interest in perfecting the skills needed to hone their craft.
Our Drama Scholarship Programme aims to support and challenge Scholars academically and creatively, improving their theory and stagecraft, and in turn positively influencing all those around them.
The programme aims to touch on all eight of our School Values, but with a particular focus on Excellence, Creativity and Community.
Eligibility
Drama Scholarships are awarded to those who have a passion for theatre and who can demonstrate a commitment to drama through participation in productions either inside or outside school. A Drama Scholarship application form should be completed by parents. This application also has a section for the candidate to complete in their own words. Drama Scholarships are also subject to an assessment day, details of which will be provided to those candidates invited to attend.
Rewards and Expectations
Upon selection, Drama Scholars will be invited to a special induction day. Drama Scholars will be given a tour of the Drama department and observe the range of facilities available to them, including two fully-equipped Drama studios with digital lighting and sound facilities. A Drama Scholars’ assembly will be held each term.
Every Drama Scholar will receive a set of individually tailored personal targets on a termly basis, based on their strengths and areas that could be improved upon.
Each Scholar will benefit from meeting with a teacher mentor and attend a variety of Drama activities, such as workshops and performance opportunities, throughout the year geared towards developing the independent learning of new and existing Drama skills. They will also receive guidance and support from a Sixth Form mentor.
Scholars are expected to attend regular Drama clubs and most Drama workshops, take part in School productions throughout the academic year and regularly update their Scholarship Journal to record their journey.

Our Drama Scholarship Programme will be overseen by the Head of Drama, who will set the overall structure of the programme and keep the central record of Scholars’ progress.
The Head of Drama will offer each Scholar 1:1 guidance and support and will review progress, monitor entries into Scholarship Journals, assess levels of commitment, set future targets and provide written feedback, termly to the Head of Scholars and annually to parents.
STEAM SCHOLARSHIPS
STEAM Scholars are fascinated by the world around them and are always looking for better solutions to the problems put in front of them.
STEAM is a multi-disciplinary area of learning consisting of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The STEAM Scholarship Programme aims to support and challenge Scholars through their time at John Lyon, improving their STEAM skills and in turn acting as motivation to other pupils around them. The programme aims to touch on all eight of our School Values, but with a particular focus on Excellence, Creativity and Innovation.
Eligibility
STEAM Scholarships are awarded to pupils who can demonstrate a passion and aptitude for scientific pursuits and a desire to learn more about how they can apply their knowledge in seeking solutions to real-life problems. A STEAM Scholarship application form should be completed by parents. This application also has a section for the candidate to complete in their own words. STEAM Scholarships are also subject to an interview and assessment day, details of which will be provided to those candidates invited to attend.
Rewards and Expectations
Upon selection, STEAM Scholars will be invited to a special induction day. STEAM Scholars will be invited to spend time in the John Lyon STEAM Laboratory and STEAM Makerspace to observe the range of facilities available to them, from the soldering equipment to the laser cutter, 3D printer and different typesof robots. A STEAM Scholars’ assembly will be held each term.
Every STEAM Scholar will receive a set of individually tailored personal targets on a termly basis, based on their strengths and areas that could be improved upon.
They will benefit from regular meetings with the Head of STEAM, attend a variety of STEAM extra-curricular clubs and workshops in school and be given assistance in seeking out the independent learning of new STEAM skills.
Scholars are expected to attend the weekly CREST Club, enter the STEAM competition every term and regularly update their Scholarship Journal to record their STEAM journey.

Our STEAM Scholarship Programme is overseen by the Head of STEAM, who sets the overall structure of the programme and keeps the central record of Scholars’ progress.
The Head of STEAM will offer each Scholar 1:1 guidance and support and will review progress, monitor entries into Scholarship Journals, assess levels of commitment, set future targets and provide written feedback, termly to the Head of Scholars and annually to parents.
ART SCHOLARSHIPS
Art Scholars are true creatives, who can balance the academic expectations put upon them with the freedom given to them to express themselves.
Our Art Scholarship Programme aims to support and challenge Scholars while they learn the techniques needed to excel academically and creatively. Through time spent in the Art studios, Scholars also help inspire all those around them.
The programme aims to touch on all eight of John Lyon’s School Values, with a particular focus on Excellence, Creativity and Innovation.
Eligibility
Art Scholarships are awarded to pupils who are identified as pupils who can produce good work, are willing to learn new techniques and who show great promise and commitment to the subject. The Art Scholarship application form should be completed by parents. This application also has a section for the candidate to complete in their own words. Art Scholarships are also subject to an interview and assessment day, details of which will be provided to those candidates invited to attend.
Rewards and Expectations
Upon selection, Art Scholars will be invited to a special induction day. Art Scholars will be given a tour of the Art department and observe the range of facilities available to them, from the darkroom, to the kiln, the printing press and the laser cutter. An Art Scholars’ assembly will be held each term.
Every Art Scholar will receive a set of individually tailored personal targets on a termly basis, based on their strengths and areas that could be improved upon.
Each Scholar will benefit from regular meetings with a teacher mentor, attend a variety of extra-curricular clubs and workshops in school and be given assistance in seeking out the independent learning of new artistic skills. They will also receive guidance and support from a Sixth Form mentor, who will support them with any ongoing projects.
Scholars are expected to attend the weekly Art Clubs and most Art workshops, enter the Art competition every term and regularly update their Scholarship Journal to record their artistic journey.
