Thank you for your interest in John Leggott College. We have over 50 years of experience supporting students in achieving their aspirations. For over 30 years we have welcomed students from across the globe to join in this success. We have had over 50 students progress to either Cambridge or Oxford University. We are passionate about ensuring you achieve your potential both academically and personally. This guide will offer you an insight into the college, highlighting the support and the opportunities available to you. You will join a college that has nationally recognised success.

SPECIALISM

John Leggott is an internationally renowned sixth form college. We provide an excellent level of education to A level students aged 16-19 from 23 different countries. Our position as a global educational institution has provided our staff with the experience and skills needed to support international students to success.

As a sixth form college, our teachers are experts in their field and dedicated to their subject. They are specialists in teaching A level qualifications and equip students with the knowledge and skills to prepare them for a successful future. Our staff are also experienced examiners, some of which are chief examiners giving them invaluable insight into the exams their students will take.

Over the years, we have used our experience to develop bespoke support programmes such as Aspire to help students apply for competitive courses and universities. We have successfully grown a thriving and extensive Super Curriculum programme to ensure our students learn the additional skills and knowledge needed for elite UK universities. We have specialist teams available to support with university applications, health and wellbeing as well as a dedicated and experienced International Office.

All the above ensures that our international students receive the best support and teaching possible. It is this expertise and support which provides the basis for success.

Support

LEARNER PATHWAYS TEAM

This dedicated team provides our students with the support and guidance needed when making an application to university. This team comprises work experience and careers leaders who give students the opportunity to make informed decisions about their futures.

John Leggott College offers an International Enrolment Programme which runs for 4 days before the formal classes start. This programme helps international students familiarise themselves with the college and meet teaching staff before making final course decisions.

The programme also covers practical things like how to open a UK bank account, register with a local medical practitioner and tour the local area to see what North Lincolnshire has to offer.

PROGRESS TUTOR

Students will be assigned their own designated progress tutor who will act as the first point of contact for any academic query. Tutors will track academic progress and offer assistance where required to keep our students performing at their best.

24 HOUR SUPPORT

You will never be alone at John Leggott College. Whatever concerns students may have, there will be someone to listen and someone to help. If a student needs to chat with a staff member, they are able to come and talk to us at any time.

Students will be given an emergency contact number for use at any time, day or night. The emergency phone is staffed by a member of the international team and is there to ensure our students are fully supported during their time here.

SOCIETY STREET KITCHEN

Society Street Kitchen is an excellent dining location based in the main college building. Serving a variety of delicious food options for all dietary requirements, Society Street Kitchen provides hot meals and snacks throughout the day. Students can try out our daily specials menu, sample our popular cooked breakfast or grab a Costa Coffee. This dining option has it all!

THE MARGARET MASON CENTRE

The Margaret Mason Centre is a great space to grab a bite to eat whilst catching up with friends. Its lively social atmosphere and excellent choice of quick food offerings makes it a popular choice for our students.

EXTENDED OPPORTUNITIES & TRIPS

John Leggott College provides all students with an Extended Opportunities programme. With a wide range of clubs and societies available which cover both practical and super curricular opportunities, this programme helps students to develop new skills, gain invaluable experience and improve their university application. For international students, our clubs and societies also provide an excellent opportunity to make friends with UK students.

As a college, we pride ourselves on giving our students opportunities to expand their knowledge through trips and visits. We travel both domestically and internationally to provide you with vital experience to enhance your academic study.

SUPER CURRICULUM

The Super Curriculum programme encourages extra academic study, in addition to a student’s courses, to widen and deepen their understanding

of the subjects that most interest them. It is not work set by teachers, but rather is independent research pursued by students into whatever stimulates their intellectual curiosity.

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION

Our Extended Project Qualification is available in addition to your programme. You have the opportunity of developing research and project management skills in relation to a topic of your own interest which goes beyond A level courses. Additional UCAS points are achieved and universities look favourably upon candidates who have undertaken this course.

At John Leggott College we have fantastic relationships with employers. These employers support our students in many ways, including by offering insights into possible career routes and providing our students with the inspiration to succeed. Employers that we have relationships with include:

Aspire programme

FOR MEDICINE, DENTISTRY AND VETERINARY SCIENCE

The Aspire Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science (MDV) programme sets out to support students who are considering applying for courses that will lead to careers in these professions.

Students from John Leggott College have been successful in securing places at Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary schools for over fifty years. Students can expect detailed individual guidance and support at each stage of the process. The Aspire MDV programme is led by a specialist careers tutor with many years experience of the application process. This knowledge is teamed with academic input from subject specialists and professional input from medical practitioners.

Overall, this is a programme that guides students through the application process whilst giving them the opportunity to develop academically and as a professional practitioner. We allow students to explore their preferred vocation in both the classroom and the workplace. By taking part in Aspire MDV, students will be supported not only to meet the academic entry requirements, but to develop the personal skills and qualities to work as a team member and leader in their chosen profession.

STUDENTS CAN EXPECT:

• Individual mentoring with one-toone meetings at least every 6 weeks. This is to guide students through the application process, explore their wider experience and help them to reflect upon it. Crucially, it will help students to develop your discussion skills ahead of your interview.

• Guidance and detailed support in writing a personal statement that fully captures each student’s professional development.

• Help in choosing a course which best suits each student’s professional qualities by considering the teaching style and methodology.

• Subject classes to prepare for UCAT/BMAT and interviews.

• Conferences, subject seminars, visits to MDV schools and contact with current professionals.

• A team of work experience specialists who will help our students to secure professional placements and direct them to online courses. These will involve individual work experience but will also provide students with the opportunity to develop their team working skills through diagnostic scenarios.

ASPIRE TO APPLY TO OXBRIDGE OR BE A MEDIC, DENTIST OR VET AT JLC

The Aspire Oxbridge programme sets out to support students who are considering applying to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Students from John Leggott College have been successfully securing places at Oxford and Cambridge for over fifty years. The Aspire Oxbridge programme is led by a specialist Oxbridge tutor who has significant experience and knowledge of the application process with academic input from subject specialists. Overall, this is a programme that guides students through the application process whilst giving them the opportunity to develop academically and intellectually by exploring their subject far beyond the A Level syllabus. By taking part in Aspire Oxbridge, students will be very well prepared not only for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but for the most challenging academic courses and universities in the UK (and beyond!)

Students can expect:

Accommodation

All John Leggott College international students live in Homestay accommodation. Students will be placed with a host family, a service which was rated Outstanding by OFSTED, the UK inspection organisation. OFSTED confirmed that our Homestay accommodation is of a high standard whilst being safe, comfortable and welcoming.

Our host families will make our students part of their family during their time at John Leggott. Many of our students stay in touch with their host families after leaving college, having become lifelong friends. Once we have matched a student with a host family, we will send across details about them so students can get to know them a little before they arrive.

Staying with a host family provides our students with a number of benefits as they become immersed in British culture. Often, our international students will develop extensive knowledge of the UK and gain invaluable opportunities to practise English. Additionally,

host families often take students to places of interest in the local area, helping them to settle in and gain confidence about living in the UK.

Our host families are police checked and fully trained before we allow any student to move in. We visit the home first to ensure it is a suitable place to live and that it has all the facilities our students will need. Most homes are within walking distance of the college, but some students may cycle or use public transport.

To ensure all Homestay environments are comfortable, we only allow one student per room. individualistic care will be provided by host families, supporting students while they are at home. There is a choice for Homestay to be catered, where the host will provide breakfast and evening meals on weekdays plus all meals at weekends. Alternatively, we also offer a self-catering option. During college hours, students can buy a variety of hot and cold meals available at one of our two modern dining options.

Facilities

The ARC

Our Academic Resource Centre is a WI-FI enabled, open-plan facility for students who want to work independently or in small groups. Our pastoral support teams are also based here, allowing students to access Progress Tutors and our Wellbeing Team easily during the day. They work hard to ensure our students receive pastoral support to complement their academic studies.

THE HUB

The Hub is a light and spacious room to study, read and relax. Our Student Services Team, who can help with general college queries are located in the Hub, along with our Learner Pathways Team who will assist with gaining work experience and university applications.

THE CORE

The CORE is our central hall which houses state-of-the-art immersive screen technology. These facilities are used to provide students with unique experiences, including the opportunity to connect with elite universities via video conferencing to take part in virtual master classes.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS

We have specialist STEM laboratories for subjects including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering, Electronics and Maths.

THE PORTAL

The Portal is an open access IT area which provides updated PCs and netbooks for students to use.

COMPUTING SUITES AND DIGITAL EQUIPMENT

Over the last academic year we have made a significant investment in digital equipment, including £170,000 in a virtual reality learning and skills space. This innovative 180 degree technological immersive space allows students in the college to learn and develop with each other and participants from other colleges and establishments.

John Leggott College boasts three state-of-the-art IT suites and two Esports suites. This new equipment provides students with the opportunity to use high-end industry standard machines that they would not ordinarily have access to. The equipment is a significant investment and represents our commitment to being a Centre of Excellence for IT experiences within our local community.

Principal Leon Riley stated ‘We now have a hi-tech learning environment which will open up the full range of potential careers and learning and skills opportunities for our students and workforce of the future.’

DANCE STUDIO

We have a large dance studio with mirrored walls and an actively sprung floor.

THEATRE

The Theatre has 120 fully retractable seats. The theatre is adjacent to two contemporary rehearsal rooms.

Music and recording facilities

MUSIC AND RECORDING FACILITIES

We have recording booths and multi-track recording rooms. There are also private music rooms for practice and individual lessons. The college has an orchestra which performs to the general public.

ART STUDIOS

We have large and fully equipped art studios.

TEXTILE STUDIOS

This is ideal for those wishing to enter the world of fashion.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY LAB

The design lab is fully equipped for both metalwork and woodwork. We also have an industry standard laser cutter.

Application Process

Once you have decided that JLC is the place for you, it is best to get your application in as soon as possible. Early application ensures that you secure a place at the college. If you are unsure which subjects to choose, you can speak to one of the international team who will be able to help you make the decision.

Students normally opt for three to four subjects in their first year. In addition, you will also study English for Academic Purposes during your time at JLC culminating in the IELTS examination.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS & FEES

A Level programmes

UKVI IELTS score of 5.0 overall + good high school results + interview. John Leggott College can offer any combination of A Level subjects across two years.

FEES

Two Year A Level/BTEC £11,000 per year

Eighteen Month A Level £11,000 per year

Art Foundation Year £14,000

One Year A Level £14,000

The above are subject to a deposit: £3000, EU Student £5,500 (deductible from the full fee) plus £400 admin fee, payable upon accepting your offer to study.

PRE-A LEVEL PROGRAMME

Six-month course £7000

The above are subject to a deposit: £400 (deductible from the full fee).

All fees include airport meet and greet by one of our approved taxi companies.

Home stay rates are £150 per week catered and £120 per week self-catering, payable directly to the host family.
