Work is how humans build their culture and take their place in the current of human history. For most people, it fulfills a powerful biological need and critical social function. For many, work is a form of expression and a core component of identity. For some, work gives meaning and shape to life and, for a few, it is a continuous act of creativity and self-fulfillment. For others, work is degrading and demeaning. In either circumstance, work is inextricably linked to our wider culture and it’s civic and political institutions. In a market economy, work is the primary way to make a living; and how we make a living impacts our physical and emotional health, our family relationships, our social relations, and how we govern ourselves. As work goes, so does America.
