Fast Forward Vision

John Good Group has a clear vision for the future that we call our Fast Forward plan. By integrating People, Planet, and Performance into everything we do, we remain confident that our work reflects the company’s values and makes a positive difference to our team members, our clients, the communities we serve and the wider world.

People

People are by far our most important asset. We are proud of the inclusive culture we are growing, that encourages and values diversity, and rewards and promotes based on merit. We see each individual as having a valuable role and a clear contribution to make in helping to grow our family business.

We believe in providing you with the best opportunities for personal and professional development. That’s why each employee has access to a development budget to support them in their careers and growth as individuals. Whatever it is that you want to learn or improve, we’re here to provide you with the time, tools, resources and support to make it happen.

We strive to create a wide range of opportunities for our employees both within the business and externally in our

Provide the best opportunity for personal and professional development.

communities. From a culture of openness and conversation to volunteering projects and charitable events, every team member can make a positive impact in a way that makes them feel inspired, engaged and fulfilled.

We are committed to providing a bestin-class employee experience for our teams whilst on their journey with John Good Group. We achieve this through supportive leaders and managers, transparent and open communication channels, wellbeing initiatives, innovative recognition and reward programmes, collaborative and fun working environments, and a positive approach to work-life balance and flexible working.

Planet

Ensure a positive impact on the environment and society at the centre of all our choices.

John Good Group is committed to always taking a planet-first approach. This begins with our partners, as we evaluate every potential project to ensure that it aligns with our environmental strategy to protect the planet and its many communities.

Our dedication to a greener future is an integral part of the company’s ESG strategy, which led to the Group achieving operational carbon neutrality in 2022. This is by no means the end of our sustainability journey though, which is why we’ve developed an ongoing training and development programme for best practices, which is closely followed by all employees.

Everywhere you look at John Good Group, there’s an action or initiative that’s designed to support the planet and its many ecosystems. From a comprehensive recycling scheme and a wide range of volunteering activities within our communities, to solar panels on our roof and electric vehicle charging points outside our offices, we’re a business that’s serious about sustainability.

Performance

Build a range of diversified income streams so that we can sustainably reinvest in businesses and our wider purpose.

Building a high-capability leadership team

Through the Group, we’re dedicated to accessing top talent that any one of our businesses individually couldn’t justify. This means that we can attract the best of the best and accelerate growth in our existing businesses.

This strategy includes positioning John Good Group as the preferred acquirer with human and financial capital. To achieve this, we’re constantly developing our in-house expertise for due diligence and investment/acquisition integration.

As for the future, by investing in a wide range of CPD opportunities, we’re supporting our future talent and optimising our succession planning.

Invest to Grow

Our aim is to build sales, marketing and account management capabilities through strategic investment. By identifying new business lines, geographies and adjacent market opportunities, we can focus on investments that fuel sustainable growth as a Group and within our individual businesses. Part of this approach includes the acquisition of like-for-like businesses, enabling us to build scale and take John Good Group to new heights.

Invest to Diversify

As a Group, we have the capability to spread risk and access opportunity across multiple new business lines and geographies. This flexible approach means that we can make minority investments and pursue joint ventures as well as make outright acquisitions. Through strategic diversification, John Good Group can continue to respond to changing needs and provide innovative solutions to emerging and growing sectors.

Our

team’s values

A business is nothing without its values. Here’s what makes John Good Group such a forward-thinking community of specialists, changemakers and creative minds.

Provide a service we are proud of

From customers and colleagues to business partners and suppliers, we aim to make every interaction with our business a positive and rewarding experience.

Support each other and work together

We encourage teamwork because it makes us all better at what we do and creates a fun place to work. All of our working environments are open, respectful, and give each team member the resources they need to achieve success.

Make long-term business decisions

We don’t do quick wins here at John Good Group, as our projects and partnerships are designed to deliver long-term performance and profitability for everyone involved.

Always seek to improve

We’ve created a culture that encourages innovation, which is why we ask our teams to challenge the status quo and welcome new ideas. This mindset enables us to continually move forward and make a positive difference in the world.

Be a responsible member of the community

As a sustainable and responsible business, we create valuable careers for people within our communities whilst supporting charities across the globe through the Matthew Good Foundation.

The Matthew Good Foundation was the idea of Matthew Good and Tim Good, both sixth-generation custodians of the Good family business - John Good Group.

Passionate about the company being a force for good, Tim and Matthew agreed that every year the family business would donate a proportion of profits to the Foundation so that employees could apply for funds to support the charities they care about.

Tragically, Matthew passed away suddenly whilst taking part in the Humber Half Marathon to raise money for charity. In a tribute to Matthew, the Foundation was launched in 2011 in his memory. Our first project funded research and promoted safety and best practice in race medicine and the treatment of illnesses commonly found during marathons and other similar events.

Since the Foundation launched, we have donated more than £1,000,000 to a wide range of charities in the UK and abroad, with over £300,000 donated in 2023 alone.

The Matthew Good Foundation is a unique and special initiative launched by John Good Group in 2011 that allows us all to support the good causes we are passionate about, and it’s wonderful to see our funds making such a difference to a wide range of charitable causes.

John Good Group’s bespoke employee giving programme allows our employees to direct the business’s charitable donations to causes they care about in a wide range of ways. As well as supporting the company in achieving its ESG aims, John Good Group reports that its giving programme helps with employee engagement, recruitment and retention of top talent, customer acquisition and loyalty. It is also a great way of seeing their values in action, and gives employees the rewarding experience of engaging directly with the charities they support.

Grants for Good

Grants for Good was launched in 2021 as a means of inviting charities, community interest companies and social entrepreneurs to apply for funding. Every three months, £15,000 is shared equally between five chosen charities, which makes a significant and lasting impact on our local community.

This dedicated pot of cash also makes it very easy for our employees to donate any amount they wish to smaller charities and community projects, enabling them to make a valuable contribution to worthy causes.

All of our employees are involved in Grants for Good, as they get to pick which charities receive the funding through a dedicated internal voting system. This means that every team member gets a say in where the £60,000 of annual funding is allocated, making it a team effort and an inspirational way to make the world a better place.

Double Match

Our employees are fantastic fundraisers – they not only donate their time, they also bring so much creativity and imagination to the table. John Good Group has made a promise to our employees, as no matter how much they raise, we’ll donate twice as much to the pot. For every £10 raised by our people, the chosen charity will actually receive £30!

Volunteering

Whether an employee has a specific skill that they’d like to put to good use or has free time that they want to donate to a worthy cause, our volunteering programme is truly accessible and versatile.

John Good Group invests time and focus into sourcing one-off volunteering opportunities and matching them with individual interests, resulting in greater engagement and an enormous positive impact on our local community.

Monthly Draw

Each month, we hold a draw for our employees and one of them is chosen at random. The winner receives £250 that the group then donates to a charity of their choosing. Employees can pick any charity they wish, from a small, local project to an international not-for-profit that’s close to their heart.

Donation Match

We also support our employees when they make a donation to a charity. Whatever they give, we’ll give the same!

Pro Bono

The skills within John Good Group are impressive and wideranging. We believe that as well as using this knowledge and expertise to grow our business, our employees should have the opportunity to share them with projects and organisations that interest them. Whether it’s help with financial matters, project management or offering an entirely different kind of support, our staff provide a wealth of knowledge for others to tap into.

Champion Grants

Our Champion Grants encourage our employees to support small charities, local initiatives and community projects by applying to champion them. This means that they will organise fundraising events and spread the word of their chosen charity, which gives colleagues the opportunity to also get involved.

To facilitate this, we offer Champion Grants of £500, or £1,000 if their spouse or child is also involved as a volunteer. Employees can apply for one Champion Grant per quarter and up to two per charity each year.

Volunteer Days A Day to Make a Difference

We encourage employees to take part in activities that enhance and serve the

Volunteer Days are at the core of this ethos, as they invite our people to do good in creative and proactive ways. Every team member is entitled to one paid day per year to volunteer for a charity, community interest company or social group of their choosing, giving them complete freedom over how they do their bit for society.

Volunteering takes many forms, as it could be a case of attending a litter-picking or tree-planting event, visiting a school to mentor children or help young people to create strong CVs, offering friendship to elderly or isolated people, or anything else that they believe will make the world a better place whilst bringing them a sense of fulfilment.

A day out at Spurn Point

All employees at the John Good Group get an additional day off a year dedicated to volunteering! Rich Quelch, Group CMO, ventured out of the office to join a group of other volunteers from around the business to make up seed bags at Spurn Point, which will be planted to regenerate new seagrass meadows. These are vital in providing a food source for wildlife, sand dune stability and water filtration, plus they’re a natural carbon capture method that will help in the fight against climate change.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience volunteering and would love to do something similar again. All of the staff and volunteers were really welcoming and advised us exactly what we needed to do but most importantly we all had fun and the children loved it.

We give room to grow

John Good Group aspires to be the employer that offers the best opportunities for personal and professional development. This includes providing our employees with the knowledge, resources and support they need to reach their full potential. As well as ensuring that our team members enjoy their roles, we believe that this mindset also benefits our suppliers, clients, communities, and the families of everyone employed by our Group.

An open forum for the exchange of ideas

We recognise that innovative and creative ideas can come from anyone and everyone, which is why our team members are encouraged to speak up and share their thoughts. We believe that it is important to foster an environment in which everyone’s ideas are heard, respected, and given the opportunity to be explored. This is why we have recruited People & Planet Champions across the Group, giving employees the chance to become an ambassador for all People & Planet-related activities. Our People & Planet Champions are there to communicate the ideas, views and experiences of their teams, ensuring that everyone has a voice.

planet

Protecting the is a team effort

Our talented teams are the key to enabling us to contribute to our planet and company performance initiatives. By providing them with the necessary tools and resources, we can empower our employees to become active citizens in their local communities and make an impact beyond our company. In addition, our support of local programmes that have a positive impact on the environment is central to our aim of creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.

The YuLife app also runs wellbeing challenges for our employees and their family members. The step challenge comes with a leaderboard that has turned into a healthy bit of competition across the company, inspiring our team members to get their steps in throughout the day. When it’s time to unwind, the app has fun “YuDoku” puzzles and our employees can try to beat each other’s times.

Completely free access to 24/7 virtual GPs, mental health support and wellbeing challenges is also available to employees and their family members via the YuLife app. To ensure suitable estate planning, employees are also given the opportunity to write a will for free if they don’t already have one, which offers even greater peace of mind to them and their families.

YuLife has a unique and impactful format, as employee activities such as walks, cycling, workouts, meditation and brain training are logged in the app, which then convert into positive activity carried out elsewhere in the world. This further incentivises wellbeing, as personal improvement directly equates to global change.

YuLife has become a daily part of my day, with step challenges and ‘Yudoku’, it’s really made me think about how physically active I am in my day-to-day life. It is even more motivating that we get rewarded for completing these activities which have built up many Asos and Tesco discounts and can donate to varied charities. I’ve also used the virtual GP service on YuLife – this provided ease and convenience of booking a GP appointment and having a call back the same day, without leaving my home.

Since the roll-out of YuLife began

John Good Group’s employees have enabled the following achievements:

185 trees planted, equating to 10,175 kg of CO2 removed.

Provided 18,480 litres, or 28 weeks, of clean water.

28.1kg of plastic has been removed from the oceans.

I love the Yulife app and it’s helped me discover that I enjoy doing meditation tasks and it encourages me to go out on walks. Since using it, I have made more of an effort to exercise and I’m rewarded with coins that I can donate, or it helps with the monthly food shop!

John Good Group provides the Healthshield cash plan to all employees. The cash plan enables employees across the Group to claim back money for wellbeing aspects such as dental, optical and physio costs, alongside access to a range of MyWellness services to proactively manage their health and wellbeing, which includes:

• 24/7 Counselling and Support Helpline

• Face to Face Counselling

• On-demand Physio

• Online Health Assessments

• MyGymDiscounts

• Virtual GP

Healthshield also provides our employees with access to discounts on shopping, days out and much more.

I use the cash plan frequently to claim for regular check-ups such as dental visits and eye tests. It’s also been invaluable in helping me proactively manage my health by enabling me to visit the Osteopath regularly to prevent back pain.

Debbie

Health & Wellness Discounts

Rather than an afterthought or something that our employees find hard to fit into their busy lives, we want to make health and wellness an integral part of working at John Good Group. To make the improvement of personal wellbeing more accessible, we’ve begun to offer discounts on a wide range of activities and resources, such as:

• Gym memberships

• Fitness wearables

• Nutritious meals and supplements

Access to live instructor-led classes for free through the Extras section and Improve app, from Pilates and HIIT workouts to meditation and mindfulness.

During 2022/23, we’ve found that this hasn’t simply made it easier for employees to explore the many options available for improving their own health and wellbeing, but also encouraged group activities between colleagues and within teams. This is an added bonus, as it fuels greater communication, trust, enjoyment and social inclusion within the workforce.

Wherewe work

As well as Quarry House, which is our custom-built Head Office in East Yorkshire, we also have offices in Grimsby, Immingham, Cardiff and London, with plans in place for further growth and expansion.

All of our work environments champion professional growth whilst nurturing personal wellbeing, making every team member feel supported.

To maximise this, we’ve worked with design and build experts to create positive and responsive work environments in which every voice is heard, leading to innovative solutions and a sense of shared success.

Each office is designed to maximise collaboration, ranging from vibrant areas for team meetings and brainstorming sessions to adaptable spaces that can host events organised by the wider business community as well as not-for-profit organisations.

Aligning with our core value of being a planet-first business, all of our workplaces are also created with sustainability at their core. From locally sourced furniture and the use of sustainable materials to solar panels and electric vehicle charging points, John Good Group is setting a new standard for eco-friendly operations.
