WELCOME This is truly the summer of discontent. I had planned to write a very different letter than the one I’m penning now. But to ignore our current political climate in America would be avoiding the elephant in the room. As many Americans set out on vacations near and far, we find ourselves at the crossroad of instability and chaos that we brought upon ourselves.

I’m truly ashamed of the situation at the border, the lies that filter out each day masquerading as truth and the image of our country that we are now projecting to the world at large. So, for me, it truly is a sad beginning for this summer.

So, I won’t be sitting quietly on the sidelines or burying my head in the sand.

I’m taking a stand and a position. I want the America of kindness and compassion back, the America of facts and integrity. One where we honor our allies and friends and not embrace tyranny or dictators. America is better than the behavior we are now witnessing.

There is no seamless or easy way to segue into the Summer Edition of John Eric Home, so, I’m not going to try and make one.

As you set out on your summer vacation, be it near or far, travel safely. We hope you find the time to open our magazine and enjoy the amazing features and sections we’ve produced for this edition. We talk mid-century modern, outdoor living and we travel to the City of Lights and sample summer cocktails and some rich and savory ice cream.

Also, as the summer progresses, enjoy, relax and reflect. And, most importantly, value and enjoy your time with your family and friends.

DESTINATIONS TRAVEL & INSPIRATION

FRANCE With so many Americans heading off to France this summer, here’s an itinerary to capture your attention. Whether it’s the City of Lights or the seaside town of Marseille, “Destinations” has you covered to create a truly remarkable trip.

PARIS The first stop is the Île St-Louis and Île de la Cité. The perfect place to be introduced to the city, as these two islands on the Seine have quaint car-free streets full of old-world boutiques.

Imbibe in Paris’ history and ambiance strolling through this area while speaking with local shop owners.

After strolling the streets, the next stop on the itinerary is the rooftop of Cathédrale Notre Dame for its view, followed by a look inside the renowned church and its famed window.

Its stained glass, along with those at the nearby Sainte-Chapelle are dazzling. After witnessing the artistic and architectural feat – stop by one of the local cafes to enjoy a quick lunch.

After lunch, take the time to explore a beautiful Parisian garden. A trip to the French capital is not complete without dropping by the Jardin du Luxembourg. Lounging in this city park is a Parisian essential. Take in children maneuvering toy boats around the fountain, smell the bountiful blooming buds and catch a few rays of sun can make for a blissful afternoon.

Following the garden, head to the lanes of Avenue de Saxe, a traditional food market, to take in other smells and to eat a light, midafternoon snack. Namely, the regional imports of cheese, flowers, honey, truffles and everything in between. Afterwards, return to Ile de la Cité and board a Seine River dinner cruise. While enjoying a 3-course dinner, observe Paris’

illuminated waterfront sights in a casual setting.

After disembarking, journey to the final stop of the day. The Eiffel Tower. Scale the Tower and observe Paris set out before you at night.

The next day, shake it up and have some fun while eating to your heart’s content!

Journey to the Montmartre area of Paris and participate in a macaron baking class at Patiserrie a la Carte. Practice your language skills while learning the intricate techniques of making one of France’s most recognizable pastries.

Next on the itinerary is the Paris Food Walking Tour: Gourmet Food, Montmartre.

Gourmet French food is an essential part of any Paris vacation. This small-group walking tour introduces you to the art of French cuisine from a local perspective. Participate in a leisurely 3-hour walking tour of the storied streets, stopping along the way at several local markets, bakeries and specialty food shops. Expect to sample staples of the French diet such as handcrafted cheeses, charcuterie and baguettes, plus sweet treats like pies and croissants.

If you are still hungry after partaking, make a reservation at La Fontaine de Mars, a modern and lively, yet elegant restaurant. You won’t be sorry!

On your last day in Paris, prepare for a unique experience. The StadeFrance. Follow the official Stade de France tour guide (tour in French) and discover the behind-the-scenes of France’s biggest sports and music venue. During a one-hour tour, the group will follow the route

taken by the greatest athletes, wander through the changing rooms and stroll alongside the pitch. Afterwards, you can visit the stadium’s museum, VIP walkway and watch short videos.

Grab lunch at a local bistro and then head off to the Musee de La Mode (Museum of Fashion).

Paris is a global magnet for those fashion minded and here you can take in exhibitions featuring historical collections.

THE LOIRE VALLEY Take advantage of a day tour to discover the finest châteaux of the Loire Valley, where you will learn more of the history of France and visit private homes and royal residences of the Renaissance. One such trip is devoted to the Château d’Amboise, the Château du Clos-Lucé, the gardens of Villandry and the city of Tours.

After taking the 2.5-hour ride through the French countryside, you will reach Amboise.

Through a guided tour of the Château d’Amboise, a UNESCO world heritage site, discover the daily, private life of sovereigns and go behind the scenes of the Court. Free time will be allowed to admire the castle’s superb gardens, 12

which offer a remarkable panoramic view of the Loire Valley. When finished, meet up with your guide to head to the Château du Clos-Lucé, just a 10-minute walk from the Château d’Amboise.

There, see the residence of Leonardo da Vinci (where he lived the last years of his life) and enter into the private life of this Renaissance genius.

Afterward, the tour takes you to the Château de Villandry. At Villandry, discover the magnificent avenues of linden trees, which divide the gardens into different levels of various colors. Finally, continue to Tours (30 minutes from Villandry by coach) and participate in a guided tour of the old city to discover the charm of this historic neighborhood lined with enchanting half-timbered houses.

MARSEILLE The next day, it is time for the next stop on our itinerary. The lovely seaside city of Marseille.

Walk through the Old Port, one of the most interesting sites in Marseilles. Hundreds of boats and luxury yachts are anchored while fishermen bring in morning catches. Here, you

will experience France’s coastal life as it has been through the centuries. There is, also, the opportunity to visit small shops and boutiques.

For lunch, stop by the most original eatery in the city. La Boîte.m. à Sardine is a fishmonger’s that doubles as a restaurant. Its half-dozen tables booked out every day as fish lovers choose between the classic “plateau de fruits de mer” and local specialties or a lobster straight off one of the local fishing boats.

In the afternoon, travel to Valensole Plateau, a vast expanse of lavender fields that produce a type of lavender known as Lavandin. Pose for photos in front of the fields and then visit a lavender farm to see a selection of Provençal lavender produce: French Lavender and Lavandin oils, lavender honey and even lavender-infused olive oil. Learn about the plant’s cultivation and the properties of the different lavender flowers.

On your second day in Marseille, take the time to explore the Calanques National Park.

Hire a bike and guide for maximum effect as you explore one of the Mediterranean coast’s most scenic places. Because of the extra power provided by the electric bike, you can conquer Marseille’s three main Calanques while exploring Marseille’s charismatic neighborhoods, pass bays, beaches and coves. The tour ends with a swim in the Mediterranean.

After visiting the park, travel to the Abbey of Saint-Victor de Marseille. This fortified abbey founded by St. Cassian was built over the 5thcentury crypt housing his sarcophagus. Learn its history, see its famous stained-glass windows and have the opportunity to visit the traditional French crypt. Then, visit another iconic Marseille site: The Memorial of the Marseillaise.

This intimate museum tells the history of the French national anthem through artifacts & film.

LASCAUX Take the 9-hour train ride from Marseille, through the heart of France and passing famed cities such as Toulouse, to Dordogne. It is here where you will find an historic and magnificent part of you trip. One that you will not soon forget. Lascaux.

Lascaux, home to the first realized human art located in its famed caves. Although, the caves are not open to visitors, you can spend

the morning and early afternoon at the International Centre for Cave Art. Here, they have professional guides to accompany you from the site’s welcome desk (where digital tour companions are distributed) to the exit of the complete reproduction of the cave. Additional guides will be present in all theme rooms to answer questions and impart information to enrich the Lascaux tour.

From the Belvedere section, overlooking the Vézère Valley, the ancient meets high tech. The landscape is scanned, and a virtual reality map appears, pinpointing the locations of all surrounding major archaeological sites open to the public. Entering a shelter with a screen, the image of the Lascaux hill appears through this canvas as if one was looking out a window. The live image takes the visitor on a virtual trip outside, changing the landscape according to the hour and the season. The giant screen gives a view of the Vézère Valley almost 20,000 years ago when the landscape of Lascaux was totally different from today. The landscape constantly changes.

All the cave’s works are represented: “Two Crossed Bison”, “The Great Black Cow”, “The Panel of the Imprint”, “The Apse”, “The Shaft Scene”, “The Axial Gallery”, “The Upside-Down Horse” and “The Hall of the Bulls”.

Finally, a multi-screen 3D film proposes a unique visit of the Lascaux cave.

The first screen shows images made from 3D surveys of the original cave.

The second presents scenes of other decorated caves around the world. In this way, the audience can get a close look at the works. This film, “Lascaux and the World” takes the audience to the heart of the Hall of the Bulls, the Axial Gallery, the Passage, the Nave, the Apse and the Shaft and features the world’s different decorated caves, with their animal representations and signs.

And, after your experience at Lascaux, be sure to return to Paris to experience one more night in the “City of Light.”

Enter the Cave replica representing the whole of the original cave accessible to the public, reproduced with the techniques and the art of the Perigord Facsimile Studio (PFS) and the Artistic Concrete Atelier (AAB). Inside the replica, the atmosphere is like a real cave. It is cool

Elke Seefeldt has over twenty years of pottery experience and has studied and worked in Germany, Canada and the United States. Her interests lie in primitive pottery techniques, and her current focus is on making pinched and coiled forms that are hand-burnished with stones and then smoked in a variety of substances (for example, leaves, pine needles or sawdust). These techniques result in unique pieces with distinctive shapes and smooth surfaces that are subtle yet striking. In addition to the hand-built forms, she also creates pieces on the pottery wheel that are then pit fired. This process of “painting by fire� gives each piece a sense of timelessness and peace.

MID CENTURY STILL MODERN

Mid-Century modern broadly describes architecture, furniture and graphic design from the middle of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965). The timeframe is a modifier for the larger modernist movement, which has roots in the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 19th century and also in the post-World War I period.

Major world events such as wars uproot and destroy, but they can also create opportunities.

This is what happened during and after the World War II when many Bauhaus architects and designers migrated to America as a result of changes in Germany.

The style grew in America based on earlier styles such as the Bauhaus movement that began in Germany, and the International Style, which grew from the Bauhaus style in America.

Though the American component was slightly

more organic in form and less formal than the International Style, it was more firmly related to it than any other. Brazilian and Scandinavian architects were very influential at this time, with a style characterized by clean simplicity and integration with nature.

As with war, economies and technological advances also affect how we live and, what we want and need. After the Second World War, there was an expansion of cities and suburbanization in the U.S. Along with that emerged a demand for modern furnishings for the new quickly built simplistic homes.

Mid-Century architecture was frequently employed in residential design with the goal of bringing modernism into America’s postwar suburbs. This style emphasized creating structures with ample windows and open floor

plans, with the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in. Many MidCentury houses utilized then-groundbreaking post and beam architectural design that eliminated bulky support walls in favor of walls seemingly made of glass. Function was as important as form in Mid-Century designs, with an emphasis placed specifically on targeting the needs of the average American family.

When you look at design projects that follow a Mid-Century modern style, you will notice minimalism. Rather than relying on ornate embellishments, the Mid-Century look is all about pairing items down to their barest elements and letting their function become the star. Since Mid-Century modern design is all about simplicity, it makes sense that this school of style would harbor a strong connection to

nature. In particular, those who are looking for ways to embrace sustainable design may be interested in what this aesthetic has to offer.

A few distinguishing features of this style consist of the following: • Functionality is important, as form follows function • Classic, understated look with clean lines • Uncluttered and sleek lines with both organic and geometric forms • Minimal ornamentation • Exploration of traditional and non traditional materials • Juxtaposition of different and some sometimes contrasting materials • New methods of construction and new materials such as plastic dramatically influenced later Mid-Century Modern designers. Plastic was used for its own qualities rather than to imitate wooden

furniture.

• There was a liberal use of traditional material, such as wood, and non-traditional

materials such as metal, glass, vinyl, plywood, Plexiglas and Lucite.

• Extensive use of color – including colors from neutral to bold, and a graphic use of black and white.

Many contemporary retailers and manufacturers have continued to embrace Mid-Century Modern most specifically due to its clean-lines. Mid-Century pieces are simply welldesigned objects; with a timeless look that works very well in contemporary homes and interiors.

The style itself still feels fresh and modern today while still standing the test of time.

According to many, familiarity is also a factor in midcentury’s enduring popularity. Baby Boomers who grew up with Mid-Century designs are certainly part of the market for both the originals and the reproductions. For this generation, the designs are a direct connection to their youth.

Generation X also plays an important role in Mid-Century’s more recent prevalence. The appeal of the period to Generation X is natural because of an invisible reference point young people acquired after years of exposure to the art direction of old movies and television shows, not to mention the teak and stainless-steel contents of their parents’ living rooms. With Mid-

Century modern designs available at retailers like West Elm, the period’s look is also being marketed to millennials.

Pop culture has also helped to keep MidCentury modern design into the mainstream.

Mad Men, which premiered in 2007, is one obvious cultural source. The show’s reputation for period accuracy extended to the sets, which were specifically designed to reflect East Coast interiors in the 1960s. Popularity of media such as Wallpaper* and Dwell are two magazines that deserve much credit for championing the Mid-Century look. Wallpaper launched in 1996 and Dwell in 2000. The mainstream design media has also taken notice of the trend.

Cultural institutions also have done their part to celebrate the midcentury designs. The Museum of Modern Art, in particular, championed the modernist furniture movement from its start.

There is also the trend toward urban living that may also be part of what keeps the MidCentury look alive. The designs were conceived for the smaller post-war homes that were designed to be mobile and lightweight for city residents who moved frequently. This is all an important consideration into the way we live today.

If you are looking to create a Mid-Century modern style, do not feel a compulsion to create a replica of those times. It can also prove to be very expensive to get authentic pieces, even though many are still being made or have been revived due to demand.

First, understand the distinguishing features of the style, and find pieces that echo the feel.

Iconic pieces from this era have been adapted and copied endlessly and chances are that you might be able to find affordable pieces that fit your lifestyle needs and budget. Buying vintage furniture is another option to complete a look.

If you decide to buy new, generally one large piece can set the tone nicely and build around it. Make certain you avoid too many patterns and stay within a color range, especially for wood. Here are a few retailers that inspire the mid-century flair: Herman Miller, Knoll, Design Within Reach, Room and Board, Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware and West Elm.

WATER, WIND AND WAVES: MARINE PAINTINGS FROM THE DUTCH GOLDEN AGE The National Gallery of Art West Building, Main Floor July 1 – November 25, 2018 The Dutch rose to greatness from the riches of the sea. During the seventeenth century they became leaders in marine travel, transport, commerce and security as their massive cargo carriers and warships traversed oceans and their small vessels and fishing boats navigated inland and coastal waterways. Water was central to their economic and naval successes but was also a source of pleasure and enjoyment. In the warm summer months, dune-covered beaches offered scenic vistas, while in the winter, frozen canals provided a place for people of all ages to skate, play and enjoy the outdoors.

In a nation of sailors and skaters, it’s no wonder that marine subjects became a favorite of seventeenth-century collectors and artists alike.

Some painters, among them Jan van Goyen and Jacob van Ruisdael, delighted in capturing the marine environs in and around the Dutch coast.

Others, such as Hendrick Avercamp, turned their attention to the activity of frozen canals. Hendrick Vroom, Willem van de Velde the Elder, and Willem van de Velde the Younger, who often sailed the seas themselves, rendered every imaginable vessel, from fishing boats and major transport ships to the great warships of the Dutch naval fleet.

This exhibition explores the deep, multifaceted relationship the Dutch had with the water. Drawn largely from the Gallery’s own collection, the exhibition features nearly 50 paintings, prints, drawings, rare books and ship models. From quiet harbor scenes and frozen canals to fierce naval battles pitting Dutch crews against their Spanish foes, the range of images reveals the extraordinary impact the water had on art of the Dutch Golden Age.

APOLLO TO THE MOON National Air and Space Museum | Washington DC Campus When President Kennedy committed the nation in 1961 to landing a man on the Moon, America had sent only a single astronaut briefly into space. By the time the Apollo program ended, it had taken the efforts of more than a half-million people, produced the largest and most powerful rockets ever built, and sent humans farther than they had ever gone before.

The great achievements of the Apollo program rested upon many small ones, upon thousands of technical innovations and boundless ingenuity. The heart of Apollo to the Moon is its unparalleled display of artifacts from Apollo and earlier missions that bring this sweeping endeavor down to a human scale. Displays range from a huge F-1 rocket engine and a scale model of the Saturn V rocket to space food and personal items that astronauts took into space. The gallery also displays some of the Museum’s great treasures: spacesuits worn by Apollo astronauts on the Moon.

GOING NEUTRAL Marika Meyer Textiles, now sold in NYC, Introduces Softer Hues in Spring 2018 Collection

Marika Meyer Interiors, www.meyerinteriors. com, and Marika Meyer Textiles, www. marikameyertextiles.com, recently announced the addition of neutral hues to Meyer’s inaugural fabric collection. Now available as the Spring 2018 Collection, the softer colors align with Meyer’s mission to fill the need for more small print textiles in interior design, as well as to appeal to homeowners and other interior designers looking for lighter colors in their fabric choices.

Drawing on her background in fine arts and cultural anthropology, Meyer launched her textile collections in Spring 2017, inspired by the type of classical design elements that carry through generations - from ancient architectural details and primitive drawings to the details on antique furniture.

The first collection introduced in Spring 2017 includes: Pompeii, San Michele, Laurel Leaf, Roman Fig and Dove Stripe. Still available in their original blues and greens, this collection now features beiges, grays and lighter greens.

Later in 2017, Meyer launched her second collection, again drawing on classical design elements found in antique books. For instance, Elliot is derived from the binding of a book found in Meyer’s grandfather’s library. The second collection includes: Finn, Elliot, Charlotte and Edward.

In addition, Marika Meyer Textiles are now sold in four showrooms including Studio Four NYC, Guerin Design Collective in the MidAtlantic (MD/DC/VA), Fritz Porter in Charleston, SC, and Design & Detail in Saint Louis, Missouri.

DC FUN FACTS TIDBITS OF INTERESTING DC FACTS

A devastating flood took place in 1881 which led to the construction of the Tidal Basin, which began in 1882. Completed in 1897, the area was designed to control the levels of the Potomac River to flush out the silt and sediment from the Washington Channel and to prevent flooding.

The engineering involved with building the Tidal Basin created approximately 723 acres of new land and many of the memorials currently stand on that man-made land.

The basin’s original name was “Twining Lake” named after William Johnson Twining, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Washington DC’s first Engineer Commissioner.

There was once a beach. It was located near where the Jefferson Memorial stands today and lasted for less than a decade. However, during those years it was “the place” to be according to WETA’s history blog. The official opening came with huge fanfare in 1918 (people had been swimming in the area for a few years before this) and it came with all the things you’d see at any popular beach location, changing rooms, food vendors and other beach-y like amenities. The Tidal Basin Bathing Beach closed in 1925, never to reopen.

A whopping 250 million gallons of water from the Potomac River comes into the Tidal Basin twice a day through the inlet gates. This water is also used to keep the water levels in the Lincoln Reflecting Pool consistent.

It is home to a 350+-year-old 10-foot granite lantern, another gift from Japan. Dedicated in 1954, there is a twin in Japan which signifies Japanese-American friendship. It is lit annually during the cherry blossom festival. A Japanese Pagoda, also made of granite and a gift from Japan in 1957, is also located on the Tidal Basin.

by Louise Jones Do you and your family have a creed? If not, you should think about making one. Creeds are a great thing that all families should have.

They can have a big impact on you and your family, making you all a little bit happier and healthier! If you are thinking that it is hard to create one, it’s not. Get the whole family together and ask them to help you think of some positive rules. When you are finished, put it somewhere where everyone can see it. For example, on a wall or on your refrigerator. It does not have to be fancy or extravagant, but it should be remembered throughout each day.

One good thing about them is that they are great things for your kids to grow up with. Creeds are all about rules that will make you a better person. They are not household rules for behaving and doing chores. If your kids grow up with one, they have a better chance of turning out to be a wonderful and kind person. Isn’t that what every parent wants? I know that my parents definitely want me and my sister to grow up with these qualities! Plus, when they get older they can teach their family and friends about having a creed and how important it is. Your children won’t get into

a lot of trouble and will know right from wrong if it is constantly practiced at home with a creed.

Your whole family will be happier and healthier. When everyone in the house is being generous, everyone will be happier and that makes them healthier as well. It will make you all enjoy life some more and be thankful for how lucky you are. You might want to spend some more time together and enjoy each other’s company.

A creed is good for you too. Sometimes adults get stressed out from all of the things that they do and they can be a little bit bitter.

Parents are very busy most of the time and might get carried away.

But, a creed will remind you to be nice and keep your head up because of the positivity that it has. When you are being the best you can be, it distracts you from whatever else is going on in your life and helps you relax for a minute.

Now that you know what a family creed does for you and your family, I hope that you will try it out. Don’t forget that they are made to make families better families. And also remember, your family does not have to be perfect. I truly think that everyone needs a creed to help them be happier, healthier, and work together!

It’s a classic summer night, friends are over, the music is on, and everyone is enjoying sipping on a glass and singing along to some great tunes. This lovely libation utilizes Sauvignon Blanc and grapefruit for some summer citrus. It starts with an affordable yet delicious white wine and is fortified with some zero- sugar added citrus flavored vodka. A little sparkling soda, follows through and adds that “something special” in texture that makes the cocktail sing like a bar after midnight when suddenly everyone remembers the lyrics. And, that is the beauty of Sangria; it keeps it simple and still sets the stage for everyone to have a great time.

Just because the song says Spill that Wine, it doesn’t make it true.

However, reaching out and taking a sip of a “pearl” of a cocktail, makes for the perfect summer event. This sparkling sangria stands out with its uses of duel Rosès: Cava (sparkling wine from Spain) and French fortified wine. After the wines combine, the rest of the show starts to set in. A little citrus and sugar (lemonade could also be used) play supporting tones, that are all complemented by the bright and fruit flavors of the flavored sparkling water. This drink shines, like a jewel or a bright pearl, and just like a good song, it is set to be a crowd pleaser.

Start off with a rich flavorful Malbec from Argentina that is full of bold flavors of ripe berries, stone fruit and a hit of black pepper. Once the tone is set, some delicious Puerto Rican rum adds to the party. Rich flavors of vanilla and baking spice make for an incredible supporting rhythm to the natural flavors of the Malbec. A little orange juice, a little sugar, a little citrus soda, they all join in to “come on and have a good time.” This summer, keep it about what is always great, friends, family, good music, a chance to sing along, raise a glass and tell the friends to forget about the check, and “have a drink on me.”

Ingredients: 1 Bottle (750 ML) Campo Viejo Sparkling Cava Rose (24 oz.)

TASTE OF THE TOWN INGREDIENTS 2 lemons, halved Sea salt 3 1 1/4-to-1 1/2-pound live lobsters 1/3 cup mayonnaise 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 6 top-split hot dog buns 1/4 cup roughly chopped celery leaves 1/4 teaspoon celery salt DIRECTIONS Fill a large steamer or pot with about 2 inches of water. Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into the water, then add the lemon halves and 1 tablespoon sea salt to the pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

Place the lobsters in the steamer basket or directly in the pot; cover and steam until the shells turn bright red, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the pot with tongs and rinse under cold water to cool slightly.

Remove the meat from the lobster shells: Twist off the claws, then break off the tail. Pull off the flippers. Insert your thumb into the flipper end of the tail and force out the meat. Crack the claws with the flat side of a knife or a lobster cracker; remove the meat. Roughly chop the lobster meat. Transfer to a bowl and chill 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk the mayonnaise, 4 tablespoons melted butter and the juice of the remaining lemon in a large bowl. Add the lobster meat and toss to coat. Season with salt.

Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium heat. Brush the outside of the hot dog buns with 2 tablespoons melted butter. Toast the buns until slightly golden, about 1 minute per side. Divide the lobster salad among the buns. Drizzle with the remaining 1 tablespoon melted butter and sprinkle with the celery leaves and celery salt.

BLUEBERRY PIE INGREDIENTS 2 store-bought frozen pie crusts 1 cup sugar 4 1/2 cups blueberries 1 lemon 5 tablespoons flour Salt DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Unfold first pie crust and press into pie dish.

Place blueberries in strainer and rinse. Drain berries and add to large bowl. Add flour and toss to coat. Add sugar, a squeeze of lemon and a dash of salt.

Pour berries into pie shell. Cut other pie crust into 1 '' strips. Place strips on top of crust in criss-cross pattern to form a lattice. Bake for 45 - 60 minutes or until bubbly. Serve.

Yield: 4 servings

BABY HEIRLOOM TOMATO AND CUCUMBER SALAD INGREDIENTS 1/4 pound country bread, cut into roughly 1-inch cubes 5 tablespoons basil infused olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup aged balsamic vinegar 2 pounds assorted mixed baby heirloom tomatoes 1 cucumber, peeled and seeded DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. In a large bowl, toss the bread cubes with 2 tablespoons of the basil olive oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Arrange on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes, then toss the bread cubes and bake until golden, another 3 to 5 minutes. In a small saucepan, over low heat add the balsamic and simmer until reduced by half.

Cut the smaller tomatoes in half, quarter the medium tomatoes and slice the larger tomatoes. Cut the cucumber, lengthwise in half, and slice it into half moons or dice it into cubes.

In a large serving bowl, mix the tomatoes, cucumbers and remaining oil and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add the bread cubes and toss.

Drizzle with the reduced balsamic and serve.

RETIREMENT PLAN STRATEGIES for the individual and business owner

Now that we are hitting the fall season, it is a good time to do end of year planning with the new tax law. One thing that you want to do is to make sure that you are maximizing your retirement plan contributions in order to put as much away for retirement as possible. With the new tax law, deferring income is a good way to get your tax bracket down while you have a good income.

If you are an employee and your employer has a 401K or other type of plan you should look at putting the maximum away for yourself. This year, the maximum contribution is $18,500 if you are under age 50, and, if you are over age 50, there is a catch-up portion where you can add another $6,000 this year. There is hopefully some form of employer match that will add to your retirement account. You should look at the investment options that your plan offers and have either the plan advisor or your own financial advisor help you allocate the investment choices in your account.

Another choice is to see if you have a Roth portion of your 401K. If you do have that option, you should discuss with your tax professional and financial advisor to see if you should participate in the Roth portion. The nice thing about the Roth portion is that if your income is over $135,000 and you are single there is no income cap like there is for the individual Roth IRA. If you are married and your income is over $199,000 you can still contribute to the Roth 401K even though you cannot contribute to the Roth IRA with income over that amount for 2018.

If you are self-employed, there are other retirement plan options available to you. A lot of this depends on the size of your company and how many employees that you would have to

cover in addition to your own contribution.

If you are a 1-person business and you are making a nice income, you have several options on the type of retirement plan that you can set up.

One of the best options is the Solo 401K, this allows you to put in the same amount of contribution that you can put into any 401K, which is $18,500 under age 50 and $24,500 over age 50 plus a match of your salary of up to 25% for a total maximum of $55,000 under age 50 and $61,000 over age 50.

If you are doing really well and needed to put more money away, there is an option for a defined benefit retirement plan, where you can put away substantially more depending on your current situation. In some cases, you can put away several hundreds of thousands of dollars away. These plans have many moving parts and you need to make sure that you follow all of the rules with these plans because they are very complicated and need to be done correctly.

There are many things that can cause penalties if not done correctly. I would recommend that you talk to a professional that sets these up on a regular basis to keep you in compliance.

If you have your own business and have less than 10 employees a Simple IRA is sometimes the best option for a company of that size. The reason is because the administrative cost for a Simple plan are around $10 per employee per year versus a 401K where the cost can be as much as $4000 to set up the plan, and $2,000 to $4,000 per year for annual administration of the plan. These rates are just estimates. The Simple IRA has a lower contribution amount, which is $12,500 under age 50 and $15,500 over age 50. As the business owner, you would make up to a 3% match of the employee’s salary up

to their contribution amount. If the employee only contributes 1% of their salary to the plan, the match will only be 1%, if the employee contributes 7% of their salary the matching amount will be 3%. There is a provision for the company match that you can reduce your match to 1% or more for 2 out of 5 years. There are more rules about that, but this is the general rule on the Simple plan. The simple plan is a great option for a small company that wants to provide a retirement plan for the owner of the company and their employees and does not want to spend a lot of money on plan administration.

Uber’s “flying taxis” might be only five years away, but first the supporting real estate has to be addressed. Concepts proposed for the Skyports — part “The Jetsons” and part tiny airport — are ambitious and conceptual, based on guidelines Uber offered to potential partners: a mega-Skyport on a small footprint capable of 1,000 takeoffs and landings in an hour, where thousands of passengers could be shuttled between air, transit and car with minimal noise and maximum efficiency.

Uber Elevate has chosen Dallas, Los Angeles and Dubai as the potential test sites, with the goal of a first launch by 2023. Uber would provide each four-seat flying taxi — an electric-powered eight-rotor drone known as an electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing, or eVTOL. (Bisnow)

BREAKEVEN As both home values and rents rise, how long the DC region’s homeowners need to stay in their homes in order to break even has dropped again. Zillow’s latest breakeven horizon report, which delves into how long it takes for home purchasing costs to pay for themselves versus having spent the same amount of time renting, shows that DC area homeowners will break even in the shortest timeframe seen in recent years.

As of the first quarter of 2018, the median breakeven horizon for the region came in at 2.96 years. This is a 1.74 year drop compared to the last quarter of 2017. The breakeven point is measured with a one-to-one comparison of the costs of purchasing vs. renting a random sample of 3,000 units in each zip code.
