by Terry Otto Fire on the Mountain! Fire season will be especially dangerous on Mt Hood this year Summer is good on the mountain. The weather is fine for whatever you like to do, be it camping, fishing, hiking, or anything else. However, this has not been a usual year, and the woods are drier then they have been in over 15 years. Tinder-dry conditions will greet campers and other recreationists when they arrive up on the national forest, and any careless act could lead to catastrophic fires. Even the “wet” side of the forest will be dangerously dry this year, so west side recreationists will have to be every bit as cautious about fires as folks on the east side. A few things to remember when you go: Camp stoves are less romantic than a crackling fire, but they are much less dangerous. Doubtless, fire restrictions will be imposed this year, and camp stoves will be the only fires allowed when that happens. However, even before the restrictions happen, campers should avoid fires, especially big ones, and use the stoves whenever possible. Chain saws can be another source of fires, and if you need to use one, make sure it has a spark arrestor. Avoid parking over dry grass, too. The heat from your car’s exhaust could spark flames. It should be another glorious Mt Hood summer, so get out there and enjoy, but play it safe. Continued Page 7

by Samuel B. Trail Legendary Nettie Connett In the hills of East Clackamas County, somewhere between Sandy and Timberline Lodge, the Historical Society ought to locate an exquisite rock cliff facing westward, lit by the softening rays of the setting sun. There they should cause to be carved a miniature, localized version of Mt. Rushmore; only instead of four American presidents, we would be able to gaze up at the figures of such local heroes as Sam Barlow, Francis Revenue, Lige Coalman, and—Nettie Connett. Yes, Nettie is arguably the most colorful figure in the history of East Clackamas County, and her legendary feats are legion. She even had her picture in Time Magazine, with a bobcat she had killed. It seems everyone has a story or two about her ability to stand on her head on a barstool, or walk on her hands across Pioneer Blvd. From the Portland Oregonian, Wednesday, May 11, 1921: “Mrs. Connett to Be Jailed. Mrs. Nettie Connett, woman of the Bull Run country, who gained unenviable notice as a moonshiner, will be remanded to Jail to serve her sentence. She was convicted some time ago and has been out on bonds, proposing to appeal her case. Time for an appeal having lapsed, United States Attorney Humphreys yesterday asked Judge Bean for a commitment to jail, which was granted.” Born in Independence, Ore., in 1880, Antoinette Lurinda“Nettie” Connett moved to Portland in 1898 with a young son. Although it is unknown exactly when, she divorced her husband and returned her name from Dempsey to Connett. She began as a waitress and, despite the setbacks for women in the early 20th century, soon owned her own restaurant and hotel. Continued Page 8

Continued From Page 3 Sandy’s fall coho Fall salmon fishing in the Sandy River was “epic” in 2014 and local anglers took limit after limit of bright, hard-fighting coho from Cedar Creek and other upper Sandy hotspots. It was without doubt the best fishing the river has seen for coho in 15 years. While the projected run for 2015 is not quite as high as last year’s run, this is supposed to be another excellent year for coho. The fast-migrating fish tend to blow right through the lower river, although they can be caught down there following good rains. Most of the action takes place in the upper river, for good reason. The Sandy River runs fairly warm through the month of September below the confluence of the Bull Run River, and the coho don’t bite real well. But, once they clear the mouth of the Bull Run the Sandy turns colder. Glacial melt is the reason, and that melt keeps the upper Sandy frosty. Coho bite much better in cold water. The fish are headed back to Cedar Creek and the hatchery where they were released. Coho do not stray much, so the vast majority of the adults pile up between the mouth of the Bull Run and the mouth of the creek. This two miles plus of stream can be red hot by the end of September, if there are any rains at all. When the rains lift the Sandy the coho will begin to move, and anglers can get them by tossing spoons and spinners in the tail-outs. As the river drops the fish school up in the holes, and the fishing turns red hot for anglers tossing bobber and eggs, or drifting yarn in fast water. Good spots include the hatchery, but expect more than a little company. The fishing here is no secret, and the parking lot is often full to bursting. Other good places to intercept them include Dodge Park, and the Garbage Hole on Marsh Road.

These salmon will stay bright until the middle of October.

by Samuel B. Trail Continued From Page 4 Several articles mention Connett “taking to the woods,” in her own words, when she sold the hotel and bought a tract of timber above Bull Run in 1910. Ann Marie Amstad, a board member at the Sandy Historical Society who remembers Connett from her teenage years, said Connett became a well-known figure in the Bull Run and Aims areas because of her wild mountain woman personality and kind heart. Many a family that was out of work and out of food remembers Nettie driving up after dark and delivering a load of provisions, without ever asking for thanks or repayment, and she was instrumental in the nearly successful attempt to get a community hospital built in Sandy. The Gresham Outlook reported that she was known as the “queen of the moonshiners,” since she was the first woman moonshiner to be convicted in Oregon. Connett died in 1964 from injuries she received in a car crash. She is still remembered today. Nettie was known all over town for wearing blue jeans and her bonnet with its plastic flowers. Once at a funeral someone saw her in a dress and commented it was the first time they had seen Nettie without blue jeans. “Whattya mean?” roared Connett, pulling up her dress to reveal the rolled-up jeans underneath. Nettie always liked to be the first to drive through Sandy on opening day with a deer strapped to the front fender of her pickup. Often she showed up at daybreak, making it glaringly obvious that the deer had been shot illegally during the night, or possibly even the day before. Once a jealous hunter, trying to establish that Nettie’s prize had been taken not only at an illegal time, but perhaps also in an illegal location, asked, “Where did you shoot that buck, Nettie?” Nettie’s eyes narrowed. Her teeth clamped shut; her jaw jutted forward. “It’s none of your business, but I’ll tell you, anyway,” she snapped. “Right between the eyes, just like all the rest of ‘em.”

ourmet Sandwich or NOT! By John Wisdom & Inspired

So lets Try a BOCA PHILLY. Everyone loves a Philly Steak Sandwich and we all know they aren't that healthy but we still eat them. There is a good alternative, its tasty and good for you. We've all heard of Boca Burgers, if not your in for a treat. As with all food it is how it's prepared. This one incident I ordered a Philly Steak Sandwich, The meat was tasteless (No Seasoning) and Tough, I found out it wasn't even beef (FYI - Suppose to be thinly sliced Rib Eye) it was pork roast cut into 1/2" pieces and Dry. Ingredients: (Servings 2) 2 2 2

Boca Burger Patties Slices Smoked Gouda Slices of Pepper Jack

1/2 1/2 1 1 1 1 ? 2 4 4 ? ?

Sweet Onions White Onion Green Bell Pepper (Spit 1/2 Regular & 1/2 Sweet) Red Bell Pepper (Spit 1/2 Regular & 1/2 Sweet) Yellow Bell Pepper (Spit 1/2 Regular & 1/2 Sweet) Poblano Chili (Substitute with 1/2 Can of Ortega Diced Green Chili ) Jalape単o to Taste if desired Hoagie Buns (Wheat and Gluten Free) Table Spoons of Avocado Oil Table Spoons of Olive Oil Sea Salt to Taste Finely Ground Pepper to Taste

( Some would Like Nacho Cheese or if you will Cheese Whiz instead )

Remove All Seeds, Julienne vegetables. Start preheating a non-stick skillet Medium High to High (Cast Iron is the best, it makes the food taste better, Better heat distribution. Hard to clean) when pan is heated add 1/2 of Avocado & 1/2 of Olive Oil once oil is hot, place Boca patties in and be sure to coat both sides with oil (Be sure to heat Boca Patties to required Temp as per instructions on box) I like them a little Crispy, take out of pan. Add the rest of the oil and add all vegetables (If you are using can chili peppers only add 5 min. prior to desired vegetable doneness) I like my vegetables with some roasted chard marks but not caramelized when vegetables are almost done split buns and place on cookie sheet and toast them ( If desired brush buns with garlic or garlic oil ) now move vegetables to one side of pan, place patties back in. Heat both sides and place cheese on top to melt (Skip if you use Nacho Cheese heat in Microwave) Grab toasted buns from the oven place Boca Patty on each, vegetables on each (If you are using Nacho or Cheese Whiz slather on now). Salt & Pepper to taste and enjoy! Fresh Iced Tea with Lemon or Fresh Homemade Lemonade will go well with this dish.

Knowing Our Place Proverbs 27:8 As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so [is] a man that wandereth from his place. It is a natural human characteristic to resist limitations and confinements. We enjoy our freedom. Modern culture has been saturated with messages such as “No Limits”. In the correct application, this message can be inspiring and in fact empowering. However, there is a danger of this message being misapplied and ultimately bringing destruction and ruin to marital relationships. In nature, birds select mates and then find the right nesting location. Materials are gathered and the nest building process begins. Finally, eggs are lain that ultimately hatch and release baby birds into the world. Hungry beaks are filled until the day comes when the young birds leave the nest to begin their own lives. This is all very normal and proper behavior for birds. It repeats itself year after year, and all is well in the bird world.

In the human world, this cycle is contrary to the will of God. People are not intended to live like birds, or search for mates with bird thoughts in mind: “Who impresses me the most?” “This is a relationship that will last as long as it feels right.” “Someone new will come along if this relationship doesn’t work out.” These thoughts allow for the option of leaving. God did not intend for people to wander from relationship to relationship. We were designed for a life long commitment to our spouse. It is important for us to understand and know that our marriage is our “place”. It is not our “nest”. The word “place” implies permanent. The word “nest” implies temporary. We were not designed for short term, seasonal or non-committal relationships. Living together, or having love affairs, reduces us to the thought processes of a bird. There is an egocentric attitude in a person that says, “I can leave this relationship anytime I want”. It is an attitude that exposes just how little concern that person has for the feelings and well-being of anyone else. This kind of person is self-centered and wants a life where they are the center of all things no matter what happens to anyone else. When they get a whim to leave, they are gone like a bird that flies away. God’s plan for mankind is a “place” called marriage. It is between one man and one woman. It limits and restricts us, and at the same time it produces a relationship built on trust and commitment that lasts for a lifetime when we keep God in the middle of it every moment.
