curtin calls

As I ponder and reflect on the term that was, I am looking out my office window as students scurry to and from the Curtin Theatre with amps and an array of instruments, closely followed by teachers and staff with lists and smiles. It is the last day of term, which for many has seemed like a long one but in this moment the JC vibe continues. There is a buzz around the college this morning and it is not the fact that we are about to have two weeks of holidays, it is that there is another exciting event about to happen - Battle of the Bands 2023.
Shortly the theatre will be filled with 400 people for period three, followed by 400 will be there for period four and so on.
The same story could be said for all the events that have occurred this term. Whether they be performances, matches, camps, excursions, clubs, competitions, carnivals or guest speakers. All these events contribute strongly to the vibe of this place, cementing our culture and bringing us together.
None of this would be possible without the dedication and passion of our fantastic staff, the commitment and motivation of you
students and the support of parents and the community. It is clear that what makes JCCA a successful school is the people in it. This term’s edition of Curtin Calls is testament to that statement.
I would like to also share with you the news that Mitchell Mackay has been appointed as the Principal of Perth Modern School on a permanent basis.
As you know Mitch has been connected to this College for the past 16 years. He has led the school through a significant period of growth and improvement, and he has created a warm and supportive learning environment for students.
I know that this has been a difficult decision for Mitch, as he is very attached to our school community. On behalf of everyone at JCCA and in particular those families that have come and gone and remain connected to, I have passed on our gratitude for his dedication and leadership. He has made a significant contribution to our culture, and we are grateful for his service.
We would like to give you the opportunity to send a message of thanks to Mitch, which we will compile and give to him as a collective message of appreciation from us all. Please send any message you would like to contribute to socials@jc.wa.edu.au

Meet Year 12 student Michael, the 2021 recipient of the John Cowdell Excellence Scholarship. This scholarship recognises personal potential in students and supports them to continue to achieve highly. Read about his experience below. We are so proud of Michael and can’t wait to see what the future has in store for him!
“Receiving the John Cowdell Academic Excellence Scholarship was quite significant for me. I was awarded it in Year 10 although the scholarship typically falls to Year 12s. Its value was that it gave me the confidence to continue with other pursuits, academic or otherwise. Since receiving the scholarship, I’ve achieved high distinctions and commendations for a couple of entries into international essay competitions and have continued with my passion of public speaking.”
“I strongly recommend that if you or someone you know is suited to apply for this scholarship or any other, that you accept the opportunity. Not only will the opportunity to present yourself with pride be beneficial (regardless of whether you are chosen in the end), you will also open up relationships with many in the school’s administration. Such connections have been particularly helpful for me when I think I can highlight an issue.”
“My plans for after ATAR are completely unknown. If you happen to find some, please tell me! Seriously, I do intend to enter university at some point, perhaps not immediately, and perhaps not in Australia. I trust that John Curtin, and particularly the Drama program, will have set me up well.”
Applications are currently open and will close on 30 July 2023. No late applications will be accepted.

Congratulations to our music students and the Brass Quintet who competed in the Fremantle Eisteddfod throughout May! A number of John Curtin students were prize winners, special mention to Y12 student Blake (classical guitar) and Y9 student Patrick (Tuba) who were invited to perform at the Senior Winners Concert on June 10 in the Government House Ballroom. Patrick took home 1st place Brass AMEB grade 5, 1st place Brass AMEB grade 6 and 1st place under 18 Brass making him the overall wind winner for the whole competition! Well done Patrick!
Wind Orchestra 1 and select Brass students of the IMSS Brass Ensemble Project, performed at the OPUS showcase on Monday 26 June in the Perth Concert Hall! Since 1974, the Instrumental Music School Services have presented an annual concert of outstanding instrumental and choral music from public school students. This year, John Curtin’s Wind Orchestra 1 will combine with Bob Hawke College, while select brass students will join brass students from other public schools, to represent the John Curtin music department at OPUS.
On Friday 30 June the Curtin Theatre was taken over by the Music Department for Battle of the Bands 2023!
It was a massive day of rocking out with outstanding originals and classic covers from a large range of performing groups from Years 7-12.
Eleven bands competed for the three coveted places with prizes supplied by Mega Music and Yamaha.
Throughout the competition students enjoyed special guest performances from current and former JCCA students, as well as our very own Ms Millea and Mr Brain!
Performers were treated to a workshop delivered by WA Music (WAM) and a Q&A session with the Music Industry guest judges.
We were honored to welcome Mega Music Education Rep and former bassist of Dyscord Raffe Houston; Professional Musician Steve Judd, drummer of Karnivool; Electronic Producer, DJ and Performance Artist BEXX (Rebecca Price) of Project BEXX to guest judge on the day in addition to welcoming back 2019 Specialist Music graduate Molly Bjelan and 2021 Specialist Music Theatre graduate Mia Frazer. Mia has a diploma of Music Theatre from WAAPA and is currently developing her own musical with them.
Since graduating from JCCA in 2019, specialist music program alumni Molly has continued to dedicate herself to her passion for music and is currently working with WAM. Molly was responsible for much of the work behind this year’s WAM Fest. Every band that graced the Curtin Theatre stage brought something new, from Aerosmith and Joan Jett to Fleet Foxes and Katy Perry, all competitors made sure the judges had their work cut out for them.
• After a long and difficult deliberation the results were in…(drumroll please)
• In third place, receiving a $150 Mega Music voucher was Melomane.
• Coming in second, winning a $350 Mega Music voucher was Who Hired These Guys?
And finally, the winners of Battle of the Bands 2023 were Rocks & Rhubarb who took home the first place prize of a $500 recording studio voucher!
All prizes were sponsored by Mega Music and Yamaha. Winners will also have future performance opportunities at the school and externally at local events. A huge thank you and congratulations to all who made this event possible! Extra special thanks and acknowledgment go to Level 3 Classroom Music Teacher, Jesse Millea, who worked tirelessly to make Battle of the Bands 2023 such a fantastic day.

2021 Specialist Football Graduate Makes Incredible Leap to Premier League!
Chris Donnell, a 2021 graduate of the Specialist Football program at John Curtin College of the Arts, has signed to Fulham FC, a Premier League club in England.
Donnell, who is a midfielder, began playing soccer at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the local youth system. In 2021, he was selected to participate in the Specialist Football program at the College. The program is designed to provide elite young soccer players with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed at the highest level.
During his time at JCCA, Donnell impressed coaches and teammates with his talent
and dedication. He was a key player for the JCCA team and helped the team win several tournaments. After graduating from JCCA, Donnell signed to Fulham FC. He will be joining the club’s Under-21 team. The Under-21 team is a reserve team that plays in the Premier League 2, which is the second tier of English soccer.
Donnell’s signing to Fulham FC is a major achievement. He is only the second Australian player to sign to a Premier League club in the past ten years. His signing is a testament to his talent and dedication.
We are incredibly proud of Chris and we can’t wait to see him on the field for Fulham FC. We know he will do great things.
Congratulations, Chris!
With the FIFA Women’s World Cup in full swing, Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge, Fremantle MP Josh Wilson, Mikalya Lyon, Festival of Community Soccer Chair Jane Fraser and Former JCCA Football Director Peter Rickers joined in the celebrations at John Curtin College of the Arts this term when former students Brad Jones, Lisa De Vanna, Chris Donnell and Hana Lowry were honoured for their contribution to the world game.
The celebrations continued with former JCCA students framed and signed shirts were unveiled to the community. The shirts will be on display in the coming weeks around the College.
Wilson spoke about the importance of supporting women’s soccer in the community, while Fitzhardinge highlighted the festival’s potential to bring people together. Fraser praised the hard work of the organisers and volunteers who have made the festival possible.
The event also featured a presentation by Mikayla Lyons, the captain of the local Women’s National Premier League (WA) team Fremantle City. Lyons spoke about her own journey in soccer and encouraged young women to pursue their dreams.
The new jerseys were designed by local artist Mel Spillman “I created the artwork
“Djookan Spirit” for the tournament and City of Melville, telling the story of the sport I am incredibly passionate about, the pathways, opportunities and support for girls and women in this sport and the sisterly connections and team spirit it creates”.
The Festival of Community Soccer Program hosted a weekend filled with football fun empowering women and girls from July 1516. The festival aimed to harness the energy around the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 being played for the first time in Australia and to encourage the participation of more women and girls in football so that they can enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits of playing team sport.
Research by Futures to Football Australia reveals that football is the most popular sport of those surveyed between the ages of 1424. This is the highest rate ever recorded by any sport for that age group. According to Futures Australia’s ‘Market Landscape Tracker’ the Matildas have surpassed the Wallabies to become Australia’s fourth-most popular national sporting team. This is really no surprise as women’s sport, and women’s football in particular, grows in popularity and accessibility across all media platforms. As a result of this visibility, elite athletes become celebrities and that’s what is driving young women’s passion for the sport.

WIN A FAMILY PASS and introduce your child to the exciting experience of live theatre!
Theatre is key to the development of healthier, more creative and more communicative kids. Live theatre and ballet are powerful forms of storytelling that can help children explore the world around them. Introducing primary school students to these art forms can help them develop their creativity and imagination, as well as build essential communication skills.
One way to introduce primary school students to live theatre and ballet is through the classic story of Sleeping Beauty. This timeless tale has captivated generations of audiences, from its first performance in 1890 to modern interpretations of the story. Through this story, children can learn about the power of love, courage, and friendship. They can also experience how music and movement bring a story alive on stage.
John Curtin College of the Arts would like to give you the opportunity to win a family pass to view our end of year performance of Sleeping Beauty.
We present two special matinees on the 7th and 8th of December, specially designed for primary school students and begin with an interactive presentation by the Director of Dance, introducing students to the theatre space, lighting and sound, and the workings of the design concepts and how the dancers tell the story to the audience.
Enter to win a family pass for two adults and two children here
Tickets to this event are also available here Please be aware that only regular sessions are available for online booking. If you wish to book for a special matinee please call us on 9435 0760.

During Term 2 Visual Arts students participated in a workshop with Hana Priest of Dangerous Delights, in preparation for Crackle at the Walyalup Fremantle Festival, 10 Nights in Port.
Hana started performing with fire in 2004, after being inspired by the fire artists at Burning Man festival (Nevada, America). Since then, she has performed extensively throughout Western Australia, interstate and overseas.
She originally started her performance career as part of the duo “Fyredanz” and later went solo as “Fire Girl”. Hana started Dangerous Delights in 2012 and is the principal fire artist, troupe manager and booking agent.
Students sketched and developed designs for an artwork in collaboration with Hana, that will be created out of ceramic fiber rope and set alight for the event. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in creative problem solving, working with the limitations of the materials to balance burn time and detail available to the work. Check out the incredible work which is a creative collaboration between the local community, fire artist Hana Priest in collaboration with Elly Sumner, local students and creatives from Blazing Swan in Walyalup Kourt on 12 August.

“This artwork shares insight into my experience of living with CFS/ME. While my chronic illness is seemingly invisible, I have depicted a sleeping figure to represent the most visible of my symptoms, which is enduring and intense fatigue in response to regular activities. The lone figure depicts the isolation I have experienced as my ability to live a “normal” life has been completely eroded. The carrion birds hidden in darkness symbolise how pushing myself for too long can consume my ability to both physically and neurologically function, much like how scavengers wait patiently for the dead so they can feast.” - Elissa Baker”
Congratulations to 2022 Gifted and Talented Visuals Arts student Elissa Baker, who has been selected for The West Australian Pulse 2023 for her work Creature in the Dark.
WA’s talented young artists are celebrated in this yearly showcase, gauging the pulse of young people who will influence, empower and shape the world we live in.The selected works provide a window into young people’s private, social and artistic concerns. The Roots & Shoots Club at JCCA is about choosing to make the world a better place. Choosing projects to help animals, people and the environment. Roots & Shoots founded by Dr Jane Goodall empowers youth to be conscious and proactive in supporting humanitarian and environmental needs both locally and globally. Members develop the skills to be compassionate leaders, empowering them to take action stemming from knowledge and understanding.
Term two has seen us completing many of the plans we made at the beginning of the year. The bike repair station that was obtained by a Your Move grant is now operational for students and staff to use near the canteen. We made sustainable gifts of seed bombs for Mother’s Day and helped Year 12 Cyber Cert students with their sustainable action plans. Our beloved newly blue Pincushion Hakea now dubbed the “Message Tree” had its first display to Celebrate NAIDOC week and members joined Bottle Top Hill to promote Plastic Free July.
Term two also saw us continue in our annual tree planting, weeding and beach cleanup at Leighton Beach. As part of the Perth NRM Coast Care program Roots & Shoots has adopted a part of Leighton Beach that we care for, plant and weed each year. We planted over 250 seedlings and followed it up by a beach clean-up for Plastic Free July. We were also given the opportunity to plant seedlings at Cantonment Hill to improve habitat and biodiversity.
We have achieved a lot this term and are really looking forward to our plans for the rest of the year. If you know of any students who would like to come and join us, we meet in B3 every Friday lunchtime. All Welcome.

The Austral Academy visited John Curtin College of the Arts, and returned to Comet Bay College for a follow-up visit.
Austral Academy representatives Sam and Ash reunited for a WA special following their country NSW ‘roadshow’ earlier this year Previously, the Austral Academy has presented in a classroom setting- tables, chairs, projector, textbooks stacked on shelves etc. But in a first for the Academy, Sam and Ash presented on a stage under the lights at John Curtin’s Theatre to 40+ students- keen fishers and members of the school’s Roots and Shoots club.
Speaking with teachers after the presentation, they commented that they hadn’t seen certain students so engaged with a particular topic before. This highlighted the importance of the work being done by the Academy: finding young, passionate fishers and supporting their journey into a career in the industry by educating them about the endless career opportunities and adventures they can embark on.
“Ash and I have been to quite a few schools across Australia now, and this group of students were some of the most engaged and enthusiastic that we’ve seen. Having some keen fishers and outdoor enthusiastists in the room definitely seemed to help, but it’s a credit to the kids and JCCA that they were so switched on for just under an hour. We could see many of them having ‘lightbulb moments’ as their minds were opened to the endless career opportunities available in the fishing and seafood industries which is always rewarding,” said Sam, Media & Communications Officer.
The following day saw Lesley and Ash head on a bit of a road trip down to Comet Bay College. Around a similar time last year, the Austral Academy team spoke with Year 9 students from the school and were excited to speak with another group of students with the goal of expanding their knowledge of the possible career pathways that exist out in the big wide world.
Students were engaged and asked many thoughtful questions about what life at sea is like and where maritime operations certificates could take them outside of fishing.
“The certificates and training provided through the Austral Academy are not Austral-specific. Certificates in Maritime Operations are applicable to any seagoing or even shore-based positions in the maritime and fishing industry more broadly. It could also see the successful Academy graduate, travel the world on a variety of different vessels gaining once in a lifetime experiences. Whilst formal training is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite to go to sea,” said Ashley, HR Officer.
Year 9 Career Taster experiences have been in full swing during Semester 1 with students exploring future careers in barista, beauty, cooking, media, early childhood education, dentistry, hair styling, automotive, fishing, photography, and STEM, with plenty more opportunities coming up in Semester 2!
The Year 9 Career Taster Program (CTP) provides an exciting opportunity to challenge students’ thinking, spark their ‘career curiosity’ and make connections between education and post-school opportunities.
The CTP enables Western Australia’s Year 9 students to explore the stages of early career discovery and study pathways, helping them to make informed decisions about their subject selections in Years 10, 11 and 12. The program supports students to become ‘career curious’ and extend their thinking through practical activities and meaningful experiences with the world of work. It’s never too early to start thinking about the world of work! Young people need opportunities to learn from employers about careers and the skills they might need. To express an interest in Career tasters for Semester two, please email Mrs. Davis on rebecca.davidse@ education.wa.edu.au
I also encourage you to check out the CTP website to see for yourself. (Students must register through JCCA system) Career Taster Program - Explore Interests & Career Development Training | DTWD ( jobsandskills. wa.gov.au)

This term the Year 10 Fashion Design students went on an excursion to South Metropolitan TAFE’s fashion department! Students were involved with a range of interactive fashion focused activities and left feeling very inspired. Thank you Michelle Pike Illustration for sharing your fashion illustration skills with our students in your workshop, and to Bentley TAFE for having us.
We’ve had another busy term and it has been amazing to see so many students getting involved with the life of the Learning Centre. We have had Ms Fonseka back from leave and she has loved meeting and getting to know all our new students and staff. So many new borrowers, borrowing multiple books each week – it’s going to be a challenge to keep up with you for the rest of the year, with over 3400 physical books, eBooks and audiobooks borrowed already since the start of the year!
At the end of May our ePlatform was one year old and we are delighted to say that students, staff and parents borrowed over 1100 eBooks and audiobooks during that first year.
We would love to see if we can beat that total in the next year, so keep logging in, reading and listening! If you haven’t had a browse of the collection yet, students can access the catalogue through their Seqta welcome page, using their College username and password. Parents can apply for access through the Learning Centre page on the College website.
This has been a very busy term for events around the College and we have had a great time supporting these with some fantastic book displays. After Culture Fest in Week 2, we moved on to Reconciliation Week, where a grant from Simone McGurk’s office allowed us to buy some fantastic new books by local Aboriginal authors to complement our collection of books relating to Reconciliation and the stolen generations. With NAIDOC week coming up in the holidays, now would be a great time to come down and borrow some of these books for the break. Fandom Day rounded out the term, with
students finding inspiration in our display for some amazing costumes. We can’t wait to see what next term brings!
Voting for WAYRBA (Western Australian Young Readers’ Book Awards) is now well underway, with students also having most of next term to read and vote on as many of the nominated books as possible. Any student reading and voting on three or more of the nominated books goes in the draw to win one of two Dymocks vouchers later in the year.
All the books have been nominated by WA students, not boring adults, and we are now looking for nominations for next year’s awards. Books must be less than five years old and age appropriate and anyone nominating a book will also have the chance to win a Dymocks voucher. So, if there is a book you really love, see Ms Fonseka or Mrs Smillie for more information on how to nominate it.
The College acknowledged ANZAC Day with a service on 26 April. Along with recognising all those who served their country in the many conflicts, we also acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander soldiers who served their country in these wars. On their return, most were not acknowledged for their efforts or recognized for their contribution. We will salute them and honour them.
Click here to read ‘No Less Worthy’ a publication from The Aboriginal History WA Team acknowledging the significant contribution of WA Aboriginal volunteers to the World War One effort.
Thank you to students in the Wind Orchestra, Cadets and Student Councilors for your participation and contribution to the service.
We Will Remember Them. Lest We Forget.

For 10 years rebel fandom forces of JC have battled the imperial forces of the empire. Several thousand Fandoms have been dispatched from all over the galaxy to converge at JCCA to celebrate the 10-year reign of Fandom.
A new Mandalorian fandom threatens this peaceful alliance and celebration. Once enemies of the Jedi, will they reconcile the past and join forces with the rebels.
Despatched from Mandalore, warrior and bounty hunter Nivag Wahsdarb, will represent his clan and attempt to broker a treaty with the Jedi.

On Monday 26 June the Student Council held a JC Community Fundraiser. This initiative was created to raise funds to support our College community. Students were invited to wear pajamas or cozy casual wear for a gold coin donation. We celebrated the day with a lunchtime concert.
Coupled with this, the Student Council worked with the John Curtin P&C to run a Bake Sale. We really appreciate your support for the bake sale, which was able to raise over $1,500!
Congratulations to the Student Council and P&C for facilitating this event, the first of its kind in recent College memory.
In Week 2 we celebrated diversity and culture at the College with our annual Culture Fest! The week included daily quizzes, a College World Cup Tournament, canteen specials and a heritage / socio-cultural dress day!
The canteen whipped up dishes from a variety of cuisines including Indian, German, Chinese, Greek and Spanish to the delight of staff and students.
On the 19th of May we celebrated JCCA’s amazing P&C to thank them for contributing so much to our College. P&C volunteers are a shining light within school communities; their dedication and passion helping to provide our students with the outstanding educational experience they deserve.
P&C Day coincides with National Volunteer Week. We are so grateful for our Parents and Citizens who volunteer their time and energy to making our College a great place to be. You are #TheChangeMakers and we couldn’t do it without you!
P&C initiatives include the Year 7 Orientation Day, sponsoring a Year 12 prize, delivering the parent conversation series, applying for grants, and providing advocacy on behalf of the school community to create a better future, just to name a few!

Like any Football World Cup, the JC World Cup was full of close games, penalty shoot outs, controversy and, I am hoping, some fun!
Next year I hope to see four teams each in a junior and senior division. The world cup is about embracing all students in the school. Back to the final - Japan defeated England in a thriller 3-2, the go ahead goal was scored with 10 seconds left on the clock.

This is part of the Mental & Physical Health project that Technologies is leading in partnership with several other schools and industry connections.
This year The JC Staff Association was able to reach their fundraising goal and raise over $650 for the Cancer Council by hosting an event for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Thank you to everyone who contributed, donated and participated for helping raise vital funds for those impacted by cancer.
The College is thrilled to announce our Year 7 Student Councillors for 2023. Elected by their peers were (L to R): Olivia Elwick, Olivia McGarr and Felix Steinwandel.
Each student councillor plays a very important role at John Curtin College of the Arts. They represent both the students and the wider College community and play an important role in bridging the communication gap between staff and students.
If you have something you would like to raise then please speak to your councillors. They will bring your concern to the student council meeting. It may not always get actioned, but it is important that your voice is heard.
At JC our student councillors are concerned with more than just the price of a cheesy. Last year they were heavily involved in the discussion around assessments. This led to changes in the transition to high school for you this year. You may have noticed in most courses that the first assessment task you completed was closer to the end of Term 1. This is because students felt that in Year 7 more time was needed to be spent on helping students understand how learning is assessed in high school and completing practice assessments for feedback.

Thinking about pursuing further education abroad? 2015 grad Meesha Williams shares her experience and advice below. Thanks for getting in touch Meesha, we’re so proud of you!
“After JCCA I went to UWA and won the prize for the highest mark in an English dissertation, and I received an email asking whether I had considered applying to The University of Oxford in the UK. I ended up applying and just graduated from Oxford this year with a first-class master’s degree in creative writing. As I understand it, Australian students can also apply to study in the UK, or elsewhere, as an undergraduate - so some JCCA students may want to pursue that path after finishing WACE exams.
“I send this not to toot my own horn but in the hope that other JCCA students can be aware that studying abroad at top-ranked Universities is an option for them.
I found studying in the UK was a really rewarding experience, and I hope other JCCA students get to do the same!”Meesha Williams.
