Project Intent: The aim of this project is to bring all kids, and especially those with special needs, the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and learn about nature. Kids will be able to help plant, to catch insects, and just plain enjoy being outside!

As the garden matures, it is expected that wildlife, including birds and butterflies, will be attracted to the colours and scents of the plantings surounding the stream and ponds. We hope to see frogs and other wildlife sightings soon!

Maple Leaf Public School School yard Design Project 2010

Project Goals: To rejeuvenate a typical public schoolyard that contains over 30 percent of its useable outdoor space in asphalt andthat contains a high level of competition for programmed activities and offers little vegetative biodiversity.

C0-Design Workshop: A community input and brainstorming session, plus a co-design event with the students, was organized. The adjacent panel shows student involvement and goals of co-designing with the public.

Analysis:

The banality of the school yard promoted vandalism, attention deficit and a general malaise amongst the population. In addition, the lack of any vegetative diversity and the highly asphalted playground promoted negative water runoff issues which in turn created unusable play areas. With virtually shade on the site, hot fall afternoons made for uncomfortable classroom teaching time, and windy winter environments , and offered little shade for students or community members who frequented the playground in the warmer months.

Students, staff, administrators and other stakeholders provided valuable information in the research during the design process. The hope was that active stakeholder involvement would lead to a design that would foster community ownership of the process and the final design.

Maple Leaf Public School School yard Design Project 2010

1 Intermediate tree house Located on the tarmac, this area can be be converted for intermediate students into a tree house fort.

Older Students like to hang out away from the younger children , and therefore, a tree fort is a great idea.

The central portion would contain a stand of Trembling aspens, or alternatively, a group of fast growing Bamboo.

The vegetation provides a quick screening, creating a feeling of being within a mature tree canopy.

While the students congregate in a more personal and enclosed space, careful management of the vegetative growth will ensure that secure views into the area can be maintained.

Reducing the asphalted areas and providing a shaded microclimate for students and the building is the number one proposed concept. This area would be planted with double rows of deciduous trees and seating opportunities provided.

2 Wetland discovery park Located in the lowest area of the site, this zone would take all the runoff from the site, including the school's roof top , and be regraded to support a wetland vegetation retention area.

The idea is that students will help to plant and maintain the plantings, learning how those plants grow.

Countless educational opportunities are possible within this proposed area. Plantings will include native and regionally significant Specimens including, but not limited to :

Large berms are created here to enclose the play areas and define the space.

Plantings include cedar trees, deciduous trees and wildflowers grown from seed.

In order to provide a public space for outdoor theater, concerts or gatherings, and for students, a amphitheater is proposed against this helled area.

This is a multi-functional idea: berms and cedars will help to reduce wind exposure, and tall trees will provide more shade from the hot sun.

Wild flowers provide color and interest and learning experiences: Birds and other life forms will love this spot, and children can start to see that they are connected to the natural world.

Students and teachers will use this amphitheater for school discussions, and outdoor classroom experiences, as well as to simply hang out.

Seating can be in the form of natural stone, formed concrete or wood. Integral to the design is the placement of deciduous and coniferous trees to provide screeing and shade and a feeling of immersion ina natural area.

Solution: Combining school curriculum with natural outdoor programming creates additional benefits in terms of learning outcomes. Planning for and allocating naturalized spaces benefits the adjacent community aesthetically and reconnects the site to the regional ecosystem. By providing a masterplan both the aesthetic and educational objectives were co-jointly determined.

A lack of ecological connection and a sterile environment could be overcome if the programming focused on building an ecological ethic, by using natural materials, and by creating simple outdoor play activities that involved the natural world.

Combining school curriculum with natural outdoor programming would create additional benefits in terms of learning outcomes.

Planning for and allocating naturalized spaces would also benefit the adjacent community aesthetically and would reconnect the site to the regional ecosystem.

By simply providing a layout for natural play activities, both the aesthetic and educational objectives were co-jointly determined. My interaction with educators revealed that almost any grade school subject from counting, to mapping, to experimentation, to identification, could be taught from an outdoor perspective.

The staff and the students confirmed that this idea was valid, and both were overly anxious to have those experiences realized.

General Notes 1.Contractor will adhere to proprietary paver isntallation specifications.

1-Acer 2.After excavation compact the subsoil with a smallsaccharum to medium plate compactor and a minimum of 2 to three passes. Soft spots should be dug out and replaced with a suitable base material if needed.

3.Use 3/4" Crusher Run Gravel as the base material. Compact at 3"-4" lifts with a small to medium Compactor and a minimum of 2- three passes.

Compact to a minimum Standard Proctor Density of 95%. Edge of base material should extend beyond the paver laying surface edge 6".

4.Levelling Bed will be concrete sand.

5.Compact the pavers after installing the edge restraint in order to interlock and set the pavers in place. Run the compactor up to two passes over the pavers before installing the jointing sand.

6.Only polymeric joint sand to be used. Colour should match pavers. Install jointing sand at the end of installation and after installation of edge restaints. Use the plate compactor to run over the set stones up two Precast Concrete Paving Detail passes. Follow instructions for installing jointing sand, especially for watering and Cross setting.

Section 7.For cutting and fitting individual small pieces it is preferable to use a wet saw for accurate cuts. Where small pieces need to be fit in, avoid fitting them at the edges. Instead, disguise them into the larger paver area.

8.Edge restraint is to be placed along all edges after the installation of pavers.To be placed 1/4-1/2" below the top of the paving grade. Spikes to be set minimum 6" apart.

Tree Fort Concept: The project site is located on a new property with no existing vegetation. A tree fort concept is developed using raw timber materials and surrounded with a rich pallet of evergreen and deciduous trees to give the feeling of being elevated in a canopy. Elmdale Drive The intent of this plan is to provide a wider access route to the front entrance with a contrasting ground plane that will fit in with the existing driveway materials and layout.

The walkway has been set at a 45 degree angle to enhance views towards the front garden and to create a dynamic and modern layout. Walkway materials are similar in shape and pattern of the existing driveway for continuity and are intended to blend in with the existing driveway layout. Landing and steps are in natural stone at the request of the client and match the colour and tone of the proposed walkway.
