Cathy Flamingo

We talk to Style Guru, Cathy O Donoghue of Flamingo Interior Design WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR PASSION FOR INTERIORS? I have a degree in Interior Architecture and I fell in love with this course from the very beginning. My dad was a builder and I spent a lot of my childhood being his shadow so it’s no surprise that I choose this career path I guess.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE INTERIORS OF YOUR OWN HOME? I would have to say our home is eclectic. There’s a strong Americana influence, lots of colour and mid century and vintage furniture dotted amongst contemporary pieces. My home is one place I tend to adhere to the rules a little less!

WHAT INTERIOR TRENDS ARE YOU LOVING FOR 2018?

I’m loving the bolder colour palettes. Neutral tones are a great starting point but a bit of colour lifts the mood of a space. House plants are featuring a lot and I’ve been on board with this trend for a long time. Plants bring a unique element to any room. Rattan and wicker are regaining popularity and I can’t get enough of this trend. They add texture to a space and are surprisingly easy to combine with other finishes.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURED PIECE OF FURNITURE? I would have to say the bureau in our hallway. It’s great for storage and it has some beautiful mid century details.

YOUR FAVOURITE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT FOR INSPIRATION? @designmilk and @houseedit.ie are my go to accounts when I’m in need of some inspiration.

FAVOURITE INTERIORS IN CORK? The Montenotte Hotel mixes classic and contemporary really well and I love the minimalist design of Soma cafe on Tuckey Street.

How to Mix Patterns in your Home: - First things first, patterns do not have to match. They just need to complement each other so don’t be too strict when making your selection.

- Mixing patterns can be tricky so start small with a few scatter cushions. That way you’ll get some practice in before you play with patterns in wallpaper and larger pieces of furniture.

- Use colour as a guideline. Have a common colour in the patterns you introduce to your space. This helps pull it all together.
