Conservatory level training in an academic setting
About the Program The John Carroll School offers a college preparatory dance program as part of the school curriculum. The program offers superb conservatory level training in an academic setting. Classes are held five days a week from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. and include Ballet, Modern and Contemporary Dance Technique. Pointe is held on Ballet days from 4:30-5:00 p.m. Dance Seminar is a course that is also offered as part of this program where the dancers are exposed to studies in Dance Science, Dance History and Composition. Each class is graded, holds academic credit, and is included in tuition for John Carroll students. Dancers perform in two John Carroll dance concerts per year, as well as attend select off-campus events where performing is also an option. Field trips, festivals and various learning opportunities are provided for the students throughout the year creating the ultimate dance opportunity for our dancers; there is no other institutional program like it in the area. As an Institutional Member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) and holding a National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) Chapter, the dancers also work toward the opportunity for induction into the NHSDA. Our program is highly selective and intended for the serious, dedicated dancer who also values her academic education.
Students will: • Train technically and become dedicated dancers • Explore the depth of dance through history, science, culture and choreography • Work as a company to establish meaningful relationships in and out of the studio • Prepare for and pursue dance at the college and university level • Enhance skills through performance and workshop opportunities • Push their boundaries, find their artistic voice and become the next generation of dancers As this program is intended for students with an existing background in dance, an audition is required to enter into the dance program. If you are interested in being considered for the Dance Program, please contact Laura Ward-Moran at lwardmoran@johncarroll.org.
National Honor Society for Dance Arts The College Preparatory Dance Program at the John Carroll School is a proud member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO). Mrs. Ward-Moran is the moderator for the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) Chapter at The John Carroll School. Students in the program will have the opportunity to be inducted into NHSDA upon completion of the NDEO-mandated NHSDA requirements, and by maintaining a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher. Inductions take place annually in April.
John Carroll School College Preparatory Dance Program dancers will be exposed to dance beyond Harford County through a variety of opportunities provided to them throughout the year. Opportunities have included touring Juilliard, taking class at Steps on Broadway, presenting their original choreography in NYC at the 92Y Dig Dance, Dance UP! emerging choreographers event, and many more opportunities that deepen their knowledge, and expand their horizons.
Auditions Students must audition to participate in this special program. We seek students who have an interest in pursuing dance beyond high school and demonstrate the work ethic to succeed in dance and academics in the high school setting. Auditions are held in January. Space is very limited. If you have any questions about the program, please email Laura Ward-Moran at Lwardmoran@johncarroll.org.
Performance Opportunities Students will perform in two main stage dance concerts per school year. They will have opportunities to work with guest artists, as well as choreograph for the performance.
